I completely agree… I feel Brent brought a new kind energy to the band at a time they needed it… Jerry seemed to me to connect with Brent and tap into and build onto that energy… so many times I saw Jerry and Brent grooving together in such a powerful way… shows weren’t the same for me after Brent was gone… I saw shows with Bruce and Vinny and it was still the greatest show on earth but they didn’t seem to bring the intense energy that Brent did… that was when I started going to more Jerry Band shows…I’m so glad that I did because those were very special years for me. Thanks for sharing your intense energy with us Brent ❤️
my favorite keyboardist bar none! Why oh why did you have to do that last speedball? The Dead were a shadow of their former selves without you! but we are all richer for having heard you play, sing & write! for that I am eternally Grateful!
I was a little kid around the age of 8 or 9. As soon as I heard Jerry, then Brent I was addicted. I bugged the living shit out of my dad to get a guitar and a keyboard. I got the guitar :) But I had to wait for the right keyboard. I'm 40 now and I just now got a sweet keyboard. I can't stop playing with it! Brent was the reason I always wanted a set of keys, as Jerry was the reason I have to many guitars. I'm so incredibly thankful for being able to hear this wonderful music that has always inspired me!!!!
After an insane JFK show, we jumped in the car to lovely Newark, NJ to catch this gem. Brent was on fire in '89 and playing with remarkable presence. "Just a Little Light" was perfect for this tour. Brent was and forever will be the spark that made GD in the 1980s!
yeah but John Mayer was there. That was not the dead and they should be ashamed that they continue this charade. Jerry carried all these guys and they still ride his back using John Mayer!!! No thanks, Ill keep my memories instead of continuing to contribute to this travesty
Dude I feels on JM but he's killing it.. so anyway good music gets spread is good and I like em! they are really good. Sure if you compare original to new no comparison.. but still!
J. Mayer was NOT at GD50-- Trey was.. Although I have not seen the new Dead and Co, as I choose to NOT live in the USSAA-- I am PROUD of Bobby, Micky, Billy, Phil and those behind the scenes for passing on the torch of who we are as a TRIBE.. A family, a history of love, peace and understanding.. I hope you evolve into understanding that this is NOT about Jerry or Pigpin, or Keith, or Brent, or Vince, T.C or and ONE person. When Jerry passed, I felt as if my grandfather had passed-- again. THis IS about passing on a tradition of true tribe and music. And technically your hated J Mayer was NOT at GD50-- he joined after that FAMILY REUNION to tour and OUR TRIBE CHANGED HIM, as it did many of US. Your Phish father Trey was at GD50-- so if you are going to hate, make sure you direct it to the right place. When you lose a member of your family, you dont give up on the living, you pass the heritage on. Please look up to your fallen family and thank them for giving us the WAY and the COURAGE --- Just a little sweetness, just a little light.. Your words show that you never really "got it" and never really understood why we all kept following the music, the love, the passion.. it was US-- not one person.. it was the collective. IT WAS US AND THEM AND THEM AND US.. IT was so many roads, so many journeys, so many faces, so many times we lived in love.. that we TAKE with us, no matter what.. I pray to Jah, you find evolution and love your family.. Love unconditional, or dont love at all.. If you dont like it, great, but hating -- shows your real self.. and shows that you should just listen to the radio.. Peace, love and understanding. A lifetime fan.. of ALL the parts of the whole..
It was an unforgetable time & camping adventure! It rained heavily... making walking challenging thru the thick muddy parking lots & camping areas. I recall inside the shows-oblivious Deadheads flying with beers in hand down the slick as a slip & slide grassy, mud soaked hills of Alpine as GD jammed! It was hilarious to watch!! Great memories of the muddy magical few days & nights camping, drinking, eating, shopping, partying, dancing making merry memories with a huge roadtrip caravan of friends to WI from my home town in MI. many cool people... t items stuff from Deadheads. Great shows, memories, people, food, wares & GD culture there at Alpine in 89'!
This soulful performance shows why GD shows were so epic. Not just a bunch of performers crankin out another show, another tour, another dollar (though by the end years, money was a motivator for sure). No, Brent lived his tunes, as did Jerry. bobby too for that matter. They were the embodiment of the central narrative character of any song they did. In the end they fell victim to their own devices, just as many of their song characters did. Phil tried to warn Jerry in "If the Shoe Fits".
Hello everyone, it's me Brent & I'm just swinging buy & catching up w/ some family, but I wanted everyone to know I'm good & alive. The best keyboard member to ever play for the GD!
My first show was 91 rosemont horizon so missing these critical years with brent and all kinda sucks but I'm still happy to have seen then over 30 times from 91-95 and it was the best years of my life hands down!
I used to stay at the TRITON in San Francisco. It was the "GREATFUL DEAD " Hotel. Complete With an incredible wall mural in the (board room) OF THE BOYS.... At the end of the halls were stacks of skulls piled up....I always hoped Jerry or Brent would pass me in the lobby.... PERENNIAL DEAD GIRL.
I miss Brent mydland more than one can feel. I cried when he died. I had tickets to South lake Tahoe California and had to drive alone to refund my tickets. After Brent died, I stopped going to shows. Brent was so intense, but troubled I believe he died of a speedball, morphine and heroin. RIP Brent mydland I love you 🍄🌁🍄🌍🍄
@wireguy73 You made me laugh out loud!! Now I can never rewatch this video without laughing at it because of this comment, which I did not even notice until you said it out loud!
Great song by GD, one of my favourite ones. Btw, anybody knows where can I find "Gentlemen start your engines" by GD? On YT there's a lot of clips with this title, however they relate to NASCAR only and sadly have NOTHING to do with the song. It was round here about year ago, why did it disappear? AFAIR GD was always very tolerant on taping and republishing amateur recordings from their concerts and this was plainly a concert taping.
I have been listening to this bad religiously for 37 years and in my twenties I used to dismiss this song. As an old 50 year old dude who has had his ups and downs this song now resonates with me. Thats why I love them, because their songs mean something and ring true. That being said I am furious with what is going on in Deadland for a long time. It died with Jerry and it should've. To see John Mayer just tears me apart and makes me wonder if I was sold a bill of goods for all those years. Either way, great memories, friendships and stories from the road. I wouldn't change a thing. For me, a "touchhead" as I admit I am. it was never the same without Brent. He was just coming into his own. That was a huge loss "
@Mike weiss - the songs have to live on, shame they stopped playing almost everything from this album after Brent died, he wrote 4 songs from Built to Last including this one
I met Jerry Garcia through bob weir, in which I played piano, organ, etc.. I would often be invited to play in w/ the dead as both phil & Jerry loved my improvisational skills, thus leading to Keiths good bye, in 78 when I became a full time M's
I had a dream with Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia. I traded tye dies grateful dead shirts with Bob. I told Jerry he looked like Jerry Garcia. LOL it was a fun Dream.
Sorry guys I hit the enter key by accident, but as I was saying I became a full time member of the Grateful Dead in 78, when Keith & Donna finally left, in which was a well anticipated & needed change by all members. Jerry even said " Like, She would sing way above everyone else & she just couldn't go where we would go or wanted to Go!" This was mostly meant for @ DICKKY BONNER! Sure do miss the Ol' "Lazy River Road"
If it weren't for Brent I probably wouldn't have ever got laid in the 90s! And for sure I could have never got Donna! But then there was Trent! Brent Mydland and Trent Reznor are fo sho my angels. Not to say I wouldn't have got laid without them, but they sure made things a whole hell of a lot easier! God blessed us with Brent! And for that I am forever grateful!
@@ml_gamer8344 They got like 10000x better after Pigpen. Jerry was still learning how to play the guitar. They would have never branched out of their abbrasive blues rock stuff if he had stayed. May he rest in peace.
Brent brought maximum energy every time and this electrified the rest of the band, particularly Jerry.
Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!
Still rockin this in 2022. My last dead show was Brent's last show. Miss you brother.
my favorite keyboardist bar none! Why oh why did you have to do that last speedball? The Dead were a shadow of their former selves without you! but we are all richer for having heard you play, sing & write! for that I am eternally Grateful!
Rite on moon. Brent rips my soul out

Brent captured the sounds and vocals the dead needed he was the distance thunder that roared a brilliant light
He is as greatly missed as much as Jerry
Had a friend say, "He's the worst keyboard player they ever had". Folks, I'll fight you over a statement like that.
Well said indeed.
Brent was just masterful! So freaking talented and such a great voice.
I was a little kid around the age of 8 or 9. As soon as I heard Jerry, then Brent I was addicted. I bugged the living shit out of my dad to get a guitar and a keyboard. I was feeling the goosebumps and then read this comment !
My fave performance of this tune ever ❤

This dark , stormy, wonderful man left us 31 years ago today. Know our love will not fade away!
The man Brent mydland... Soul and passion always came through when Brent played..
author of this lyrics is John Perry Barlow. It would be good to mention him here.
There's a great TedX talk w Barlow on RUclips for anyone interested cheers
When John Barlow passed,I read a bio on him.Never realized he was such an interesting guy.
Right on, so true, a sweet bridge, a ray of light in the dark commentary- always loved how the Dead did things just once in a tune-
Such peace, a song I have to hear once a week. Sing this to yourself in a quiet moment. Top 10 in my world.
Outstanding!! Brent, you added such colorful soul to The Grateful Dead. Glad I got to see you perform live back then. Forever you will be missed.
I don't think the Dead ever recovered from Brent's loss. Thanks for bringing us all just a little light, brother.
💡
They never fully did. He & Jerry had a special connection and Brent took some of the passion in the music with him when he left.
I don’t think Jerry ever recovered:(
That was damned good. Brent was under appreciated in his time.
Brent always stole the show not to mention my face..Brent and Jerry together were the ultimate combo...
We all knew how good he was....even if we didn't know it!
He had my favorite voice out of everyone in the group....such a sexy voice!
Holy hell where has the time gone. Still miss ya Brent!!!
Man...What if Brent was present to be apart of GD50...goddammit... rip Mr.mydland you shed a whole Lotta light
yeah but John Mayer was there. That was not the dead and they should be ashamed that they continue this charade. Jerry carried all these guys and they still ride his back using John Mayer!!! No thanks, Ill keep my memories instead of continuing to contribute to this travesty

My favorite Brent song, and one of the great bridges in all of the Dead's songs.
That was awesome! Oh Brent, so easy to love you

Try to put a leash on that light. It's too bright. It's hurting my eyes.

Agreed. The Brent years... the best.

mike weiss I agree I'm not sure how people can like mayor with the dead when he's not singing it's cool because his guitar is decent lol
@Mike weiss - the songs have to live on, shame they stopped playing almost everything from this album after Brent died, he wrote 4 songs from Built to Last including this one
I was at this show.. It rained like hell & a tornado touched down about 5 miles away
Do you die at the end of every episode Kenny? Like Southwark Kenny? :)
