In Step 5 the A screws will not screw in? Is there a reason for this

Probably a defect. They both just fit for me

Mine also will not screw in at this step for type A screws.
Update: #8 was reversed. The left side (no changer) has no threads, while the right side does. That was our issue. Label on #8 has to be inward.

Can you just use the frame & not use the conversion kit?

Hello! Thank you for your inquiry. If you would like to convert the crib to a full size bed you will need the full size convertible bed frame. For the toddler conversion the toddler rail is optional.
