    This is a great beginning of Ariana's new era. Era where she's actually appreciated as a vocalist. I hope someday all of those delusional stans will just leave behind all that bullshit about "support". Literally there're FREE sources of information. Nope, we'd better watch YT-made up "science" and all of a sudden we can judge who's good and who's bad. It doesn't work like that. Thank you again for doing it, it means a lot to me and, I'm sure, for Ariana as well :)

      I do think ppl do too much and run with the common narratives about these singers techniques and all, but sometimes it’s just the truth. While I appreciate ari as a vocalist because I think the things she can do with her voice is just incredible, supported or not, she does have her issues. She’s inconsistent with her support but that doesn’t make her a bad vocalist

      @@onedollarbleach6891 she has weaknesses just like any great vocalist. There's no reason to pretend like whatever her weaknesses are, are special or uncommon, just saying. Also yeah, it's the truth sometimes, other times it's an uninformed opinion and it's important that you just recognize the difference between the two, when it comes up.

  • @moonlightbae9473

    it makes a huge amount of sense now. her support cannot stop at B4 and then have an entire octave of belts from C5-B5s to be all unsupported when she uses them the most + has been doing them every night. if she actually was straining, she wouldn’t have done it since she is very knowledgeable about her voice. she also isn’t experiencing any decline from her HMT. which doesn’t make sense to say her support stops at B4s.
    anyways, thank you for this video and i hope this goes viral and you get the success you deserve for the amount of hardwork you put into your videos. thank you so much for this and i’m excited for the next video, take care 🖤🖤🖤

Or ANY tour I never really believed her consistent support stopped at B4 because she’s been belting the upper fifth octave for most of her life surely that would’ve left tons of damage if her technique was as bad as these phoney vocal stans were implying? Even if it was true that just proves that support doesn’t affect technique at all so it was always flawed.

    This video makes a ton of sense bc if she was really straining all those notes (supporting up to Bb4 during THMT and B4 during the DWT) her voice would not be in the condition it is today. After years and years of straining and oversinging (especially during the HMT) we could see something like Mariah's voice during 2000 or 2008, that is, very weak, inconsistent vocals, and a great loss of ease and range. But she still slays and is getting better with her voice. This girl clearly knows her voice, she was broadway-trained, those people really know their instrument. I always felt like there was something off with the "she only supported up to B4 during the DWT, as the C5's in touch it and SOTR, to give some examples, were supported, as well as the Eb5s in TBY. We can only imagine what her voice will bring in the future

    • @KajiVocals

      Ariana is a highly trained vocalist. Ariana has had vocal training since she was a small kid and attends lessons very often. It'd be stupid to even suggest she's straining or doesn't know what she's doing. Your voice would die even after one tour of singing like that if her technique was really 'that bad'. Most people who bash her voice a) don't know anything about vocal pedagogy b) are biased towards other singers c) quite frankly base every ounce of their 'vocal knowledge' from RUclips videos - I always said, if you wanna learn how to sing, look elsewhere.

      Mariah Carey is an excellent vocalist but she is not a technical singer hence why she was always so inconsistent. No, it’s not nodules messing with her. There are dozens of professional singers who have vocal damage and do just fine. Mariah’s entire belting range was built by squeezing to the top which you can hear in her 1990 undubbed Tatou club performances (Vanishing for example). Sure, she had lucky moments up to a G and G# in studio. But they were just that. Lucky moments. She can’t even reach the G5 consistently (most of the G attempts were sharp F#5s) and yet it’s supposed to be ‘consistent’? We also have to take into account just how much of that’s dubbed vocals.

      Kaji Agreed! Mariah is a great vocalists, but when you also take into consideration of vowel modulation, dynamics, and just one's overall sound... Mariah definitely isn't on Ariana's level.
      Ariana belts F5 in piano*
      Mariah full on yells an F5*
      With proper technique Mariah could've done the same thing. The woman can belt a Bb5 in the studio so...

    For anyone who is going to hate, I gotta tell you something.
    Ariana has been singing like this, BIG notes ecc., for almost a decade (let's not forget born this way's B5), and if she didn't support these notes, if her voice was full of tension and strain, then problem would have been her last single. But now we are in 2020 and in her vocal peak so far. Why? Because she (throughout years and years of training) has been using the mixed voice (with this technique you don't shout the note) and she has always supported these notes with her diaphram, as if you don't support a note with the diaphram, even a simple note will come out awful and strained.
    + we're NOT talking about resonance
    Edit: OK guys, I got it, "strain and tension has nothing to do with support" please don't hit me lol

    In fact this is true the real truth , the real ariana grande supported fifth octave range, thanks for this finally something accurate, the definition of "support" in the vocal freedom in RUclips is really messed up, that definition in pop modern vocal pedagogy right now that everybody has been fooled with it and believe it's right and it's more funny when these people start to attack you and call you "delusional" just because they can't sustain proper arguments with real acknowledgement about vocal pedagogy, everybody knows well everybody vocal coach, that the real definition of "support" it's just engaging the diaphragm, "support" is a breath management technique to execute the notes using your back and abdominal muscles to keep the correct full sound to support the note, in the vocal freedom comunnity here everybody here thinks it's otherwise about tension/strain/high larynx which that has nothing to do with real "support" it's impossible to hit a note with neutral larynx, and tension it's probably the dumbest thing of this "definition" you can't hit a note with no even a bit of tension even in resonant notes you can hear that for more free that it sounds still has that thing bringing it back/tension, when you hear a strained/pitchy/tensioned/almost shout notes they are just screaming with tonality/they are hitting flat notes which causes them the sound what makes you think it's unsupported and tensioned cause tension always have to exist even a little bit but a little bit in a note
    There are bunch good singers who have a really bad reputation in this vocal community for what I've seen, singers like Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, who real vocal coaches see and always say "they have nice support in this belt or that one" in fact I've heard bunch of resonant belts by ariana C5-G#5 by Ariana where you guys said "she was raising her larynx" "strained/tensioned"and always try to deny her resonance saying it's reverb/her bright tone but in fact it wouldn't have sounded so good if she wouldn't have projected nicely that's why her voice is still better than before and she has never declined, for demi most of the times she's flat but her belts in the C5-G5(I've seen some G5s) are nicely supported too, for me this is messed up , there's tons of misconceptions about this specifically vocal theme, you can disagree with me I don't care but I'm truth of how I've been educated and to my teachers, i would love to start making videos if i was good at editing, come vocal modern terms users it's time to make a difference and not be so toxic/sensitive about this theme and stop believing you are always right cause it's not like that!

    I'm really glad this is coming to light. Maybe this will bring the fun back to the Vocal community, instead of the seriousness of what note is "supported" and other Bs. Sometimes I really wish some of these people would sit back and think "can I really teach Ariana how to sing" or "do I know more about vocal pedagogy than these professional singers?" Because it just looks crazy when RUclipsrs are in the comment section really trying to explain how these pop singers should sing lol. Anyways, the video is amazing! As I knew it would be. Some examples here are of her not supporting and being kind of throaty. But still, you were able to showcase what she REALLY does with her voice. The first being forced, a little closed, and a little pitchy, compared to the second one that's clear, tension free, and open. But again, it's very few and it just happens when Im sure she's tired.

    80% of the video is wrong, and I know it because I’m a huge Arianator lmao. The first C5 is already not supported. Instead of this, you should have picked a lot of actually supported/resonants B4-Eb5 and the partially supported E5-F5 she ACTUALLY successfully did, instead of doing misinformation when we can clearly hear jaw tension, jaw tension and sometimes high larynx during earlier tours...

    • @grandeflamesbutera3949
      @grandeflamesbutera3949  4 года назад +2

      Jaw Tension and High Larynx doesn't stop the support at all. U actually cannot sing above G5 without the use of High Larynx because its medically impossible. Jaw Tension is a habit and its clearly not affecting her the way U think it is when she has been doing it since she was 6 years old. Ariana knows what she is doing and how to use her voice because she has been vocally trained for 20 years. She knows what is healthy and what isn't because she wouldn't go for half of these big notes and high belts if they would damage her voice. Thank u for ur thoughts and opinions. No one is using misinformation but clearly U are if U honestly think that High Larynx stops support when its forced High Larynx that does that, not Natural High Larynx or Natural Raised Larynx. There is a reason its called natural, Its because it happens naturally and it doesn't damage nor affect her voice negatively. Hope this helped u understand Ariana's and Vocal Pedagogy a little better

    • @jolan_bcx
      @jolan_bcx 4 года назад +12

      @@grandeflamesbutera3949 You get it all mixed up. You don’t seem like you know much about vocal technique. Raised larynx does affect the support as by definition, support is the absence of flow allowing a free path for the air to do a « perfect » note. Although some flaws can happen with support still being there, It’s really not much. And as jaw/tongue tension constricts muscles, it actually tightens the throat therefore preventing full throat openness and having a focused and forward sound. Support can happen with very little tension or raised larynx, however Ariana tends to raise her larynx enough to prevent support around the F#5 area, whereas the notes between D5-F5 tend not to be supported due to tension or sometimes throatiness, which means the sound actually gets trapped in the back of her throat. You can actually notice her jaw tension during her riffs and runes or during some notes, when her jaw is placed forward. I beg you to listen to the first C5 and compare its ring, resonance and openness to one during the sweetener world tour to really hear the difference in technique and, again, openness. I didn’t really want to go deep in technique but again, this misinformation is kind of getting on my nerves.

    • @grandeflamesbutera3949
      @grandeflamesbutera3949  4 года назад +2

      @@jolan_bcx What kind of definition did U get that from??? Thats heavily Falsified. Support is a Breath Management Technique. It has nothing to do with the Muscles or the Throat. Do u use the throat and muscle to sing and to speak??? Yes obviously but to support a note, It has nothing to do with that or tension. a little bit of Tension is actually beneficial for the voice especially when ur fatigued or sick. Tons of Trained Broadway and Opera Vocalists use a little bit of tension to help support and reach their high belts up to G#5 and their highest head voice note all the way up to F6 (From what I have seen). Once again Raised Larynx doesn't do anything bad unless U force the larynx. Ariana doesn't do that. Does she get muffled?? Yes and thats the sign of her belting past the D5/Eb5 break (which has been medically proven as well that most vocalists will raise their larynx past D5/Eb5 due to the break). Ariana is never throaty at all, Are u ok????. She was taught by thousands of voice teachers so she knows not to be throaty. Y'all misuse terms so much. Once again, Jaw Tension isn't affecting her like U think it is. She has been doing this for 20 something years, If it was damaging she would've had a vocal decline and her voice would've deterioated by now. Ur misusing Resonance because Ariana actually never rings aka resonates because she isn't vocally trained for that. Ring takes years for someone to learn and Ariana hasn't used it at all. It was all reverb. Not ring. Also resonance or Ring isn't in Pop Culture so she doesn't do it since its not a requirement. Literally almost every pop singer doesn't even remotely ring because its not necessary nor is it a requirement. Its also medically impossible to strain as low as C5 and pull off G5-E6 belts or mix because Strain blocks range and permanently damages the voice. On the topic of Openness, She actually was pretty open on all the C5's and because C5 is so consistent it was automatically "Supported". Ur thinking of openess as a open mouth right??? Well thats kinda false because for example doing an Oh vowel, I vowel and a Ah vowel will automatically be open enough to be healthy. I suggest reading The Complete Vocal Technique website because its clear U have been fed some lies about Vocal Pedagogy by either RUclips itself or a RUclipsr. I picked some of the best examples that will prove the title right and have the evidence to back up the video because I have studied Ariana's voice for nearly 2 years now and is currently studying Vocal Pedagogy and Music Theory. Have a great day/night

      you don’t accept that you’re wrong, it’s really sad for you. support comes from air management, which DIRECTLY correlates from all the parts of your respiratory system, so lungs/throat/diaphragm but also muscles that interact with the respiratory system, therefore jaw muscles and abs. you apparently do not have the anatomic knowledge necessary to do one of these videos, and you should have known cause you’re the ONLY person in this whole youtube vocal thing claiming she ever (fully or not) supported any note higher than an E5/F5 while belting. by the way Ariana actually showed signs of resonance in earlier years of her career and sometime experience it on some today, for example some Bb4/B4 which are apparently her most comfortable supported notes as they are consistant. Im not remotely talking about vowels, but the throat openness, which I think you would have directly understood if you had the vocal knowledge you claim to have. I’m not being a bitch with you but you sometimes have to admit that your informations are wrong or that you misunderstood them when I’m not the only person telling you that most of these notes are not supported (well some of them are not really strained either, I’ll give it to you)

    Just my opinion on each note:
    C5-D5: They all sound supported but I'm not sure the ones from SOTR are because they pretty clearly sound different even from other supported notes in the same clips. They have that almost too light quality and the vibrato sounds a little pushed but idk.
    Eb5: I think all of them sound supported!
    E5: The E5s from Bad Decisions were definitely strained just compared to the B4s in the same clip. I'm pretty sure the E5s from Right There on Jimmy Kimmel had tension just bc her technique wasn't that good in 2013 and the notes don't sound too stable, but everything else sounds well supported.
    F5: The SWT clips sound supported and healthy to me. The Break Free F5s from DWT and HMT have that ringing quality, but I think it comes from the use of a very heady mix instead of support and I think they have high larynx too, but of course I can't know for sure.
    F#5: The first 7 rings F#5 sounds a little pushed to me, but the second one sounds supported to me. Some people think that just because there's no rasp there's no strain, but Ariana is good at using a lighter mix to cover up any raspiness. The Into You F#5s to me sound like she had a high larynx on them, but the OLT note sounds supported to me. For GIAW, the first clip sounds great to me. The second clip sounds really good but the sustained F#5 with vibrato kinda sounds like her throat closed off a little on it, so I don't think it's supported.
    G5: The Touch It G5s sound amazing, I always thought she had supported some of them but I didn't really know bc I thought she couldn't support above E5 yet then. A lot of the other clips have really short G5s and are hard to tell. In the first NTLTC clip, the first G5 sounds great, on the second one I think there was some tension, which then caused her to lose some control on the following run. The third G5 is way too short to tell. The DW G5s are really short and I honestly can't really tell, but the one with vibrato sounds a little strained to me. The remaining NTLTC clips sound good to me, but they're pretty short. The G5 on "men-TAL-ity" sounds really powerful but also a little pushed, so idk.
    G#5: The clips from DWT don't sound supported to me. The first clip of Everytime sounds really good to me, so I'd like to think it's supported. The second clip sounds good but she loses control on the C#5, so it probably wasn't supported. The third clip sounds really good and I couldn't hear any issues. For Why Try, I don't really know how the Mimu Gloves work, so I don't know if they were supported or altered.
    A5: I highly doubt the Honeymoon Avenue clips were supported. Especially on the second clip, you can hear her gain support and more power and control as she goes lower on her run. On Dangerous Woman, her E5s and G5s sound good but the A5s sound that just little bit pushed and I think they were close to supported but not quite there. Santa Tell Me sounds really great and I think it was all supported, but I can't know for sure. None of her Into You A5s ever actually sounded good, so I don't think any of them were supported.
    Bb5: For the first BMB clip, it sounded like she had to push a little to reach that G#5 and the Bb5s were definitely not supported as you can hear the strain and tension in them. In the second clip, the G#5 sounds great but after I listened a few times it sound a little unstable towards the end of the note. The Bb5s sounded much better here than in the first clip but they were too short to tell for me. The first Breathin clip sounds amazing, I really think it's supported. On the third BMB clip, the G#5 sounds good but I think there was a little bit of tension. The first Bb5 sounds pushed and the second one sounds a little better but not like the ones from the second clip, so I don't think these were supported. For the fourth BMB clip, the G#5 sounds like it did on the third clip. The Bb5s sound good but you can hear that they're a little strained and that she has more support, power, and control at the bottom of the run on the Bb4s. On the last BMB clip, the G#5 in my opinion sounds much better than the other ones and like it was supported. The Bb5s sound good but to me sounded like she had a high larynx on them blocking the support and that sound carried through the rest of the run. The last clip of Breathin sounded great the whole way through except for the Bb5, which wasn't entirely on pitch and was unstable. She definitely has better examples of the Bb5 though in other concerts.
    Overall I think her technique especially on SWT was really underrated and she's definitely better than most people think. The whole concept of support and resonance is really confusing though and obviously I'm no expert on vocal technique, so feel free to take what I've said with a grain of salt. PLEASE correct me and offer your respectful opinion on anything I said, I'd like to learn more from other perspectives too. I really love the concept of this video and would love to see a similar one on Demi Lovato. If you actually read this whole comment, thank youuu.

    Great video! Unfortunately, she hasn’t supported anything above E5, except for some promising F5s, but that’s it. Almost every supported belts above C5 where during the Sweetener Tour.
    Just because it sounds easy and powerful doesn’t mean it’s supported, there have to be many factors present in order to be completely open and healthy. Most of what you’ve shown above E5 where good mixed belts, but not enough to be supported, this isn’t only because of tension, some times the placement could be a bit better, the jaw gets too involved, her larynx raises, the tongue it’s tense or the space on the throat is just not enough. But this doesn’t mean they weren’t great tho, Ariana is an amazing vocalist, and her voice as a whole is just insane.
    Btw, I’m not criticizing her at all, she’s a million times more talented than I will ever be, but I wanted to comment my objective point of view 😊

    • @KajiVocals
      @KajiVocals 4 года назад +9

      I’m just gonna copy my previous comment cuz I’m lazy.
      1) Her breath support is poor but it doesn't really mean much as breath support is not dependent on tension or lack of it. It's something entirely different. Also, you can't control your diaphragm. That's a common misconception (I know you didn't mention it but I still thought it would be relevant). 2) 'Neutral larynx' is a) relative - 'neutral larynx' position can be changed in practice as the resting larynx position is mainly habitual b) not really possible up that high in belting c) belting is genuinely characterised by higher larynx position (read the Estill Voice Model, page 133 and Honda, K. [2012] Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Vocal Mechanisms) 3) Placement is just a mental image. It doesn't really mean much as they can differ from person to person. 4) Her jaw isn't tight nor tense, it's actually fairly relaxed. And the 'tightness' you might see in her articulation of vocal melismas doesn't really affect the overall freedom of the sound. A lot of people also mention tongue tension. This isn't really present in ther voice much. She doesn't retract her tongue much. She keeps a high tongue position instead which is what is giving her bright treble-y tone and higher tessitura. Smart approach. I'm really not hearing much room for unnecessary constriction in her sound. The only thing I can think of is her sometimes overnarrowing her pharynx in her midrange to get a higher closed glottal quotient. But that's something a lot of singers do. For example Sohyang in her head voice (she does it to get rid of excess air).

    I think the reason people doubt her technique is although she can belt quite high. She’s hasn’t had vibrato on on upper belting (for her A5 and up). She’s a high soprano, so there no reason she can’t belt notes like Sohyang. Her technique is GOOD. But not GREAT. She needs to utilise head voice not falsetto and start mixing more as she gets higher then she’ll be unstoppable

      donofriocarlo46 Not trying to be rude or anything, but I heard your cover of God Is A Woman for Cam's vocal competition (I'm a judge). I wanted to say that if I go by what you're saying sounds tense then I'd say pretty much that your belts are tense. There's nothing wrong with tension because you need tension to execute a note period. If there was no tension then there wouldn't be any sound.
      Tension is basically closure. Too much of it causes pain, strain, and poor placements while singing, that's where the real problem is. So, if we apply that to Ariana what about her voice sounds poor in placement, painful, or strained? Your F#5's sound "tense", yet they're very much free.
      You kind of see where I'm coming from?
