  • What was the Moulin Rouge, and why is it significant in Las Vegas history? We talk to historical expert Claytee White and delve into these questions.
Opening on May 24, 1955, the Moulin Rouge was the first racially integrated hotel-casino not only in Las Vegas, but in the United States. Being the first of its kind, the property paved the way for integration in the city. Located on the Historic Westside of Las Vegas, the Moulin Rouge quickly became a national sensation and rivaled the success of the properties on the Las Vegas Strip.
Even though the Moulin Rouge was wildly successful, it was only open for five and a half months, but even that was enough time to make a lasting impact on Las Vegas history.

This was absolutely Magnificent! Thank you so much for this mini documentary of an iconic landmark forgotten to History.
Quick Question: Do you have any idea who painted the mural behind the bar of the Paris showgirls at the Moulin Rouge Las Vegas? I cast find a full version of it anywhere.

It's a shame that this hotel was not saved.😢

It is a shame that it couldn’t be saved, but if you realistically consider the area that it was built in then one can understand why it was doomed to fail from the start. On the plus side it served as a catalyst to change the anti segregation rules that were implemented at all Las Vegas casinos. On the negative side it was open for only six months due to mismanagement. Another major factor was the obvious fact that the construction of the Moulin Rouge did not contribute to other investors or developers building any other hotels or casinos in that part of Las Vegas. The area around the Moulin Rouge remained undeveloped and still remains much as it was nearly 70 years ago. Because of that one factor alone it spelled failure for the Moulin Rouge. It was essentially an orphan surrounded by low income and impoverished neighborhoods. Few tried to make a success of the property over the decades but none succeeded. The property was also a victim of thieves and vandals over the years. It was burned by fire several times until it was finally destroyed. There is absolutely nothing else in the way of development on the current site or in the surrounding neighborhoods. It probably will never be rebuilt because the same thing would probably happen to the property all over…vandalism.
On a positive note few people realize that the Moulin Rouge had a cameo in the popular gangster movie Casino from 1995. The bar scene where Joe Pecsi’s character viciously attacks a customer with a pen was filmed in the Moulin Rouge bar.

I grew up here before they knocked down the apartments that stood here, I wish and hope they do something nice for this area. I remember walking to the strip from here.💙

There are plans to rebuild this. I just saw a 2022 news clip on the Moulin Rouge restoration. It's been a turbulent obstacle but hopefully it comes into fruition. 🤞🏾❤
