Blacksmithing: making billhook knife
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 фев 2019
- I hand forge a billhook with no power tools. I only show the forging process - no heat treat, no handle, no sheath. Just forging the blade into shape with treadle hammer and hand hold hammer. Open the full video description for more information.
The billhook have convex center grind on the curved side and chisel grind on the other side. Made from leaf spring (spring steel) from a car.
The plan was to make it and use it on future bushcraft trips - but I don't like the design with two knifes in one blade. Thought I may would - but no. So I will not finish it and use it in future videos. I am woking on another design I like a lot better.

Interesting engineering on display Rune and also so refreshing to see a video without background music and commentary I really appreciate your formula. Much more engaging and great to focus on the natural tones and resonant audio. Thank you
I got to agree been helping me learn . Wish more do.
Incredible to watch you keep the lost art of blacksmithing alive, looking forward to seeing more videos Rune.
You sir managed to unite blacksmithing, bushcraft and filming in perfect harmony, I've been loving everything so far
The manual labor of the blacksmith is fascinating, looked at one thing ... Thanks!....
You are amazing Rune! I've been watching you for a while now and you never cease to amaze me! Keep it up brother! Cheers from Northern Michigan U.S!
Beautiful tools . . . billhooks were used here to harvest sugarbeets which was a big industry at the turn of the 19th century . . . backbreaking work until machinery took over; thanks Bertram (got the name right this time :)
Nice work, we use them a lot in Wales for hedge laying. Great tool.
Forging is the right job for a real man. Nowadays it is nice to see young people practicing this traditional craft. I wish you all the best and look forward to new videos of you.
hey mr.manly.man, my big sister is a true petite belle (looking quite similar to my profile picture) and also a professional (master) blacksmith! ...and a gifted musician and a successful martial arts teacher. so there ;-P
Omg I love your power hammer ⚒️
Thank you Bertram. Great video again my friend. Looking forward to the new design!!!
I love it when you upload!
Nice stretch on the tang..great heat control ! Forge On my friend👍 Thanks for the upload
I really enjoyed this I also love the power hammer
Great work, excellent filming as always ! I would like to let you know that your last couple videos have inspired me to dig out my auger bits and modify a few of them for bushcraft use ! something I am looking forward too. Thanks for the great content !
Always appreciate good black smiting , they are like artifacts ,
Natural work.Bravo

this is even better to watch not being a native english speaker, having no idea what that thing might turn out to be :-D and then realizing that i still have no clue at the end of the video, and finding a hugely fascinating wiki article about it. great entertainment this is (bildungsauftrag: erfüllt)

Bravo artigiano.
When you're outdoors, you often use your long drills. I think it would be exciting to see how you make these drills.
Maybe you have the desire to make such a video.
Greetings ...
Thanks. I didn't make the big drill/auguer. It's just a old one. But I am about to learn how to make all kinds of drills and then I know will I show it in videos.
Oh, yes …
Thanks !

What is wrong with people who gives cons to this movie?

Beautiful shapes and refined technique. The handles impose a choice: layers of leather, like in Italy or Germany, or hard woods, like in France or Great Britain?
Interesting and cool project. Do you have some advices for those who wants to start blacksmithing?
I want to begin and make knives and everything that I can make, I can use some advices before.
I would recommend to focus on your hammer work by forging leaves and J hooks.
Start.
There's so many blacksmithing channels on youtube, so I would recommend you to use the search function and start watching. :-)
Bailey Blacksmith i think this is the best advice for someone who truly wants to start smithing... you gotta start with the basics lol.
just start man! pick up something thats steel and heavy if you dont have an anvil (ideally a railroad track), do yourself some research and start. Id recommend not starting with a knife though. They arent that easy to make, they are time consuming, have to be somehow hardened, which i snot an easy process for a beginner. I made my first knife about half a year in. And it was totally worth the wait. Start out with some basic stuff. Leaves, hooks, bottle openers etc. There is plenty of channels out there to help you. Good luck!
Hard work I'm sure, nice job. Watching the video was mesmerising and strangely therapeutic! Must be the natural beats. Do you produce everything the traditional way? Thanks for your consideration.
I agree I commented about how refreshing it is to hear the resonant audio and not overly loud background music or commentary. A lot more engaging isn't it :)
@spirited adventure
Thanks. Yes I do it all like in the video. I live "off grid" and only have a small solar power set up - so no power for more moden tools and in genereal very limited power.
@@gh2568 Totally agree maybe it's in our DNA taking us back to the Iron Age or something like that.
@@BertramCraftAndWilderness Respect to you and the simpler life. Enjoy.

This is a “Pennato”, a Tuscanian (Italian) type of axe
Maybe it is just me, but it seems that energy is lost in the instability of the base of the power hammer. There seems to be a lot of movement there thereby an energy loss is occurring. Cheers and fine work!
I need to know how to make that sledge/ power hammer!!! Please!
Link to video only about the treadle hammer in the video description.
Great project! Do you have a video on that manual "power hammer"? I'd love to make one myself!
Thanks. yes - link to the video in the video description.
@@BertramCraftAndWilderness Ah, I see it now. Seems obvious now that it is pointed out, sorry to waste your time like that! Thanks for the reply!
