One of the benefits of aging, this music just gets better with each passing year.

First heard this piece over 25 years ago and it's as fresh today as ever it was. Never fails to bring a tear to the eye.

Anyone who has ever been lucky enough to sign this work in a choral setting, or to hear it done by a good group, understands the meaning of how music can touch and change your life. I have never listened to it and not shed at least one tear.

Lucky for you if you get it that way. It is joy, certainly, but joy that comes from knowing that the seasons turn and time passes and the fields and landscape may be (fairly) constant, but those who tend that tender land are fleeting and ephemeral in the bigger picture of things. There is no doubting the beauty in all that, but it's also the sadness inseparable from human sentience. How to have joy and true meaning without poignancy? I have never found the way to get one without the other...

Can't quite believe I wrote as I wrote above! Just about a year ago, I had scary health issues, felt my mortality coming on, felt suddenly burdened and overwhelmed by my sins, and asked God to help me. And the Holy Spirit DID come. Truly and really and amazingly, in a way I wondered at and did not want to end. He/It has stayed with me (so far).
      And guess what?
Now I have the tears of joy, without the melancholy and poignancy.
So many thanks to you for your insight - you were blessed with the sight before me, but now I have it too.
The times are bad, but God DOES love us and the New Testament tells the truth about real people.
      Don't doubt it!

I think it is significant that 62 years after composing it, Copland's music is more popular than ever. Touching people's hearts in a magical way now as in years past.

I sang this in 19xx with the Arizona All-State Choir at Gammage Auditorium designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It brings me to tears every single time. It's what will get me by in 2017, the most challenging new year of my lifetime.

This is a song i would associate the most with THANKSGIVING. Christmas has its carols, Easter has its parades but TG has nothing. Time to make this the official song for that occasion.
