May I suggest to put names of the characters you talk about somewhere in the corner of the screen along with short descriptions of who they are and cross them out at the moment they die in your narrative. I had played all the way up until I stepped foot in Baldurs Gate for the first time. I enjoyed the game, I just never got the chance to continue it again. I was enraptured by the story, and the mystery of my heritage. Baldurs Gate 3 came out, and I played it. I finally beat the game, and I had a HELL of a time doing it. However I did not go down the Dark Urge path. There were moments and references to the previous games, obviously, especially when speaking with specific characters. However there was a certain part in Act 3, and if you have beaten BG3, you know the moment I'm talking about, when my entire world shattered and I had an enormous realization about who the player character in BG1 was. After that moment, I told myself immediately, that I had to understand the story of the previous two games, and thus, here I am. I am tempted to finish my playthrough of BG1, as well as go all the way through BG2, but I just do not have the time. I am also just too interested to play Dark Urge in BG3, seeing as it now seems like it might be the 'true' story of the game. Sure, your own origin character is fun, but based on what I went through in BG1, as well as finally getting the full story of the game, it just makes sense that Dark Urge is the 'true' story.

      It's a shame so many younger gamers struggle with the older UI and graphics. There are so many older games that had more depth, character and innovation than any AAA title today. BG1 and 2, Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, just to name a few. All are unbelievably good games, and in many ways surpass the modern dumbed down RPGs (BG3 being a rare exception). But they all have really outdated UI and graphics, which is a big turn off for anybody who didn't grow up with these games.

    • @cameron8779
      @cameron8779 10 месяцев назад +1

      I didn't mind the graphics or UI of BG1 but the gameplay was a huge turn off. In identical encounters you might get through relatively unscathed, take damage or get party wiped just based on the RNG. The game had an in depth story with interesting variables and characters choices locked behind a combat system about as fun as grinding mobs in WoW except you have to reload a previous save if you rolled like crap in an encounter. Just a pure drudgery time sync where it never felt like any tactics came into play.

    It's weird how much games have changed. I remember BG1&2 being an amazing, shiny, well-built-up experience. Looking back at it now, the graphics are aged as expected, but what I did not expect is that the story, the dramaturgy, and the storytelling tools would feel dated as well. We like to complain about "games nowadays", often rightfully so, but at the same time, they improved a lot in many aspects. I still love the memory of BG1&2, and most probably, they really were mindblowing at the time, but it's good to realize (after seeing a lot of new junk and the entire microtransaction-hellscape) how far some of the current games came.

The way the overarching narrative is incorporated into different chapters is really good I reckon, step by step unraveling your place in the whole conflict kept me engaged the whole time. I really appreciate this. I bought both 1 and 2, Enhanced, quite recently to try and push through both before BG3 fully releases. I was... less-than whelmed, shall we say. I expected age, and strange design issues, even difficulty, but what I found has so far been a light story strung together over barely-connected areas and blocked off time and time again by a new and overpowered enemy challenging you to an unavoidable fight right before you can rest at a tavern, dangling actual conversations, character development, choices, and alternate outcomes ever-so-temptingly right in front of you before refusing you any of those actual options.
    I don't hate old games, or hard games, but this doesn't seem... that difficult. The design is just frustrating, teasing me with the POSSIBILITY that I might be able to buy off whatever new enemy appears with five player levels on me, somehow able to wield martial level armor and weapons with deadly one-shot spells at the same time. My last two such encounters have both mentioned the bounty reward for me to be killed, and both times I've had more than five times the amount of money on my person and can even offer to pay the bounty hunters... with zero chance of it being accepted.
    And despite starting with a full party designed around my friend's suggestions for inclusion a la faux multiplayer--something more lore friendly players won't be doing--each new encounter is a boring wait while my entire crew rushes the enemy, loosing arrows and swinging weapons that miss 95% of the time, waiting to see which one of them or myself are instantly killed by the first time an enemy lands an attack or spell on us. Even the current area I'm in, and the last area which was full of kobolds, was kind of like this. As of yet, there's not really any strategy, and if I had picked anything other than Mage or hadn't at least included one in my party to get guaranteed Magic Missile damage, I'm not sure I would have ever survived the first ambush by Tarnesh, since the only way I could make it through that fight was getting a lucky interrupt on the enemy as he was himself preparing his buff spells that would render him almost unkillable to our low level party.
    I've been willing to give it more of a chance, and play it a bit more, get through these rough early times (just as with actual AD&D 2e) and get to a point where the story actually starts to matter, and reconsider sticking all the way through. I would like to get the story first-hand; these are games I always wanted to play as a kid, but never got the chance to. But man, has it been disappointing. I understand these games are considered aged classics, and I was expecting the age to get in the way, believe me--but I wasn't expecting a nearly storyless right-click slog through Monster Manual handouts with no story developments anywhere along the way.
    This video will at least make sure I'm caught up before playing 3, and the gods only know if I'll ever actually beat these two, so thanks for uploading it and while you're at it, making it a longer and more in-depth look such as this so I don't miss any of the smaller details.

    I didn't understand any of the story because I'd kill all 'bad' guys immediately. I didn't use subtlety. I didn't even add the two P.Cs who were of evil alignment, preferring to remove their HP instead. I'd just go from area to area ending the reign of all the bad guys with any guidance coming from the cut scenes.

    One big thing I hate, is picking a class, then having an NPC with the exact same class show up later in the game who can join your group. There is zero reason to have them in, and I feel like I missed a bunch of content, especially if they look cool! A list of 'safe' class choices would be great!

    • @Esquarious
      @Esquarious Год назад

      BG1 has a lot of joinable NPCs - although their quality varies wildly. The only class not represented is barbarian (added in the Extended Edition), although I'd hardly call that a reason to roll that class. Just pick a kit you like. Those were originally introduced in BG2 then added to BG1 with mods then the EE so, with the exception of specialist mages, no NPCs have them.
      Just don't create a thief. Tons of those.
