Presumably. Even the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Nations would be covered by their mission statement: "The mission of FIRE is to defend and sustain individual rights at America's colleges and universities. These rights include freedom of speech, legal equality, due process, religious liberty, and sanctity of conscience." But first things first: those all-important sororities!

"Presumably"? Why don't you ask them? Don't build a straw man to knock down: hear what they would actually say. Then, if you disagree, let them know why. Don't prejudge.

My previous comment flagged as "spam."
So much for the commitment to free speech.

I someone denied me the usage of Greek Letters in my organizations name I would use Norse runes instead. Just to show them how idiotic denying letters of a certain kind.
As a none american with no knowledge of the Greek system, beyond TV shows and movies, I still see the symbolic values of the greek letters.
Greece is considered the birthplace of western philosophy, Greek letters is therefore used a lot in physics and mathematics.
Ironically you could not name your math club with Greek letters because of this.

On that thought, if they ban the greek alphapet on campus, will they also ban all math and physics books?
I would love see them alter the whole concept of math, because the Sigma was suddenly an offensive letter! :D

That is the most ridiculous reason for not allowing greek letters. Only academic organizations can use greek letters? Can you say, discrimination? I guess he's just begging for a lawsuit. I suggest they go get a charter from a real bona fide sorority. They have the political power and would gladly provide all the legal services to make them legitimate recognized organization on campus. Plus, it would open the doors for other fraternal organizations. Plus, it would really piss the dean of students off. Which is what I'm for. An oppressive and unjust dean like that needs to be taught a lesson.

Why don't they call themselves "Skull and Bones"?
    That will fix them!
(By the way, the name "Dixie State" sounds awfully "Animal House." If they didn't want to be a "party school," perhaps they should call it "Sobriety State" or the like.)

The matter seems trivial but I can understand what they are going at. She lost me at "I wasn't going to take no for answer". It just makes it sound like she's only doing it for attention.

Not being allowed to use Greek letters at a university? Let's be real. Are you really falling for that? Why would a university care what students name a club? The real issue here, the one that is being hidden from you in order to gain your support is that this group wants to start a sorority, and no nationally-recognized sorority will authorize a branch without the approval of campus administration. This is true everywhere, not just DSU, and most universities have stopped approving Greek life. Greek life requires administration approval because administration has to accept a level of liability - sometimes a lot of liability. This group believes if they can start a club using a Greek sorority name it will advance their cause to become a bona fide sorority. Thus, it is really not about a club name, it is merely part of a larger strategy to bully the university into accepting Greek life on campus. Check Phi Beta Pi's facebook page. You can see they've already asserted their first amendment rights by self-proclaiming themselves as a Greek (Phi Beta Pi) sorority at DSU (even though they are not actually part of any nationally recognized Greek organization). Is this approach honest or ethical? Who cares, they have rights! Right? This has been a borderline brilliant disinformation campaign. They sure seem to have convinced most of you. First amendment rights? Absolutely yes! Disinformation campaigns to smear others when you can't get your way? Really? You support that?

are you stupid? phi beta pi is not a sorority or fraternity at any other school. they are well within their rights to start their own, that is obviously why they chose an unused name. did you even read the emails? none of it was about starting a sorority "without permission." you don't need permission. you can start a sorority wherever you want, whenever you want, and with whatever name you want so long as it's not taken. and really, that's not what this is about. you can read the entire case files on FIRE's website. you don't need to be "part of a nationally recognized Greek organization." there is no "recognizing body" that gives sororities or fraternities legitimacy. there is no "administration." you can start whatever club you want and nobody can encroach that right. they have already won this case, by the way.
