My parents never knew where I was in the summer holidays and that was ok because I was having so much fun. Bike riding for miles, falling in dirty rivers, losing my shoes, drinking straight from the kitchen tap, camping in the garden and then watching the storms after a hot day. The 80s were the best for EVERYTHING 😁

No, they weren't. EVERY generation looks back to the "good ol' days." In the 80s we envied how simple the 70s were and in the 70s we longed for the simplicity and joy of the 60s and 50s.

I was 5 years old and all I had to do was tell my Mom I was going to so and so's house. That was all the permission I needed. It didn't matter that I never actually went to so and so's house. I would walk for blocks going to houses of other friends. I only had to be back for meals. I can't believe the amount of freedom I had and without fear.
Not the 70's I was the 80's but, my brother and I could go anywhere as long as we were together. We used to ride our bikes across town to play at a park called Bryant's Park. We would swim there. It was where two rivers merged. Guess why the park was named Bryant's park.... a boy named Bryant drowned in the river there 😳 I didn't find that out until years later.
The 1980's were such a different time. The music, fashion, movies, and social activities. The drive-in movies, roller rinks, arcades, drive-in places to eat, and pumpkin patches. It was a good time to be young and alive.
I’m an Xer. I vaguely remember a Barq’s drive-in and a drive-in movie from when I was a toddler in 1972. They were left over from the fifties. There wasn’t a drive-in anywhere in sight in the 80s where I grew up. Roller rinks and arcades, or better yet a combination of the two, were everything though.
Oh how I miss those summers! I used to ride my bike to the library to pick out a good book and then ride back home and spend the afternoon in my backyard in a lawn chair reading it. I only WISH I had that kind of free time now. Not to mention the thrill of hearing the bell of the snow cone 'tricyle' that would come through the neighborhood and the exitement of what flavor they would have that day 😊
I LOVED puffy paint as a kid, and 110% drew my S's like that! I told my kids that we'd leave for the day on our bikes, our parents had no idea where we were and we just had to make it home by dusk, and they were astounded. Oh, the good ol' days. No cell phones or email, I long for it!
LOL I had a lot of boring summer days trying to figure things out in the 70's. So I listened to music a lot and contemplated life. Also went fishing and rode my bike and yes jumped fences and drank from a hose. I turned 60 yesterday so it must not have been too bad for me. But I've never had a concussion either ;)
We got pool passes to the city pools. The closest one was 2.5 miles away. Since we walked everywhere, we could take up a whole day with swimming: walk there, swim several hours, walk home. The thing that’s hard for me to comprehend is that after all that, we *still* had the energy to skateboard, or shoot hoops, or play frisbee, or ride bikes-or even some combination of these!
Lived in NW Arkansas in a tiny town (dirt roads and everything) when I was a teenager. Had ONE TV channel. My Mom said bored was a bad word. Using it meant you needed someone else to plan your day and she was happy to help (and it wasn't summer camp). We found plenty to do. I'm of the mind that boredom is good for kids--and I passed along my mom's lesson. It sparks a lot of creativity. I wrote a (terrible) novel at age thirteen, learned to play an instrument, read everything in the house (including how to manuals), hiked, rode horses, etc. My oldest son taught himself how to play guitar (he also filmed his friends jumping their bikes off bluffs *sigh*). My others did things like paint, hike, teach themselves photography, etc. To my delight they've taken these interests into adulthood.
I’m down! 1980’s summer! I mean we already got Top Gun to start us off, now this video, let’s go! The 80’s were the best. Every time we are at Hobby Lobby in the sticker aisle I tell my daughter how we used to SEARCH for stickers to collect and we had a sticker book. Last week she went on a bike ride with a friend and the around dusk I told my husband, “She needs to come home. This isn’t Stranger Things, this isn’t The Goonies” 😂 She came home and said “That was fun, it felt like I was in Stranger Things.” My husband and I looked at each other and burst out laughing.
I still have my childhood sticker album and still collect stickers. I also still covet scratch and sniff stickers. Kid's really don't have any idea the lengths we'd go to for stickers, scented markers, dollar store toys, little green army soldiers, tie dye, puffy paint etc. I wish every kid could experience at least 1 full week of 80's summer in their life.
I haven’t thought about sticker books in forever! I had a binder with 9-pocket plastic baseball card sheets to keep them all organized. Wow. Takes me back!😜
Homemade slip-n-slide cost me a concussion; overshot into a car. Bike with no helmet; locked up the front brakes, and went over the handlebars. Walking down a bike trail, and slip/falling into a river cost me a concussion, and I almost drowned. Football cost me 2 concussions. It's amazing I can talk without drooling on myself.
Cracked my skull open on a brass bed post, slipped on ice and fell face first into a speed bump, slipped on roller skates and hit head multiple times, brother threw a baseball straight into my ear, did boxing for a while, hit my head closing the lid of a tank. LMBO 🤣 I don't have a chance. I am currently taking care of my father who has early onset Alzheimer's - may or may not be connected but, he had many concussions too.
OMG yes. This was my 80s youth, and it's exactly what I wanted for my kids, but society has changed. So many parents can't handle the whole spontaneous hang out - it has to be scheduled. We intentionally DON'T fill the summer (other than camps, classes, or activities the kids pick) but recapturing the free range teen days just doesn't seem to fly in this generation.
I have intentionally left summers pretty unscheduled for my kids, but many of our friends schedule away every last day which means no fun carefree play days whenever we want. So years ago I began schooling through the summers, but have now gone back to having a summer again. Our younger kids have enjoyed the summer breaks.... riding scooters and bikes to the neighbors to play, swinging in the backyard, and spending afternoons at the pool. I still like to know where they're at, but I don't hover. It has reminded me of my childhood days and the adventures I had with my best friend.
Came to see if anyone had commented on this! In my experience, unplanned visits are not welcome and it's even hard to schedule a play date if you wait too late into the summer.
I went to a summer camp specifically put together by a major hospital for Type 1 diabetic kids, in the mountains, in the early 80's. I was 13. I went for two weeks, and in that time, we went on a five mile hike and slept under tarps for the night. Our counselors made the mistake of drawing drinking water from the creek that fed the camp's lake... and because they didn't filter it, a lot of the kids on that hike (myself included), ended up with amoebic dysentery. Which, at the time and given the crude tools we had back then of managing this illness, could have been life-threatening. These days, we have Covid and monkeypox, so really, not much has changed as far as trying to avoid getting sick while managing a chronic condition. Wear a mask, wash your hands, don't drink directly from the creek and don't drink what your camp counselor gives you.

70s kid- lots of bike time! To the park, to the library, to Thrifty to get an ice cream cone. Lots of crafts- I loved crafts and drawing. Blanket forts to read your book in. I rode my bike to the local stables and did chores to get riding lessons and hung out for hours. Good times!!
I SMH when I see how much kids are 'helicoptered' today compared to when I grew up. Parents need to know where their kids are every moment of every day. They will be ill-equipped to handle the real world when they reach adulthood and have to think for themselves. Also, first time we've seen both Kims in a single shot. Well done, editing staff !
Ooh, as a teen about Lola’s age, I want to say this to Kim and all the moms like her: PLEASE give us summers with this much freedom! (Although you should probably confiscate our devices beforehand). Also, I know what the blowing helps! The trick is, it actually doesn’t. It just makes you take out the cartridge and re-insert it. Puffy paint is great! And most kids learn the “cool s” around fourth or fifth grade.
Excuse me, blowing helps because in those games dust bunnies and dirt get in there. It’d be like having a slot as big as your phone to plug a charger into. You have to blow the dirt away sometimes. We would love to give you that freedom! Unfortunately this world is full of more crazy people than there used to be and the internet exposed us to what could actually happen to you. We love our kids too much to let them be tortured then die or groomed into doing stuff while you’re gone and come home later. We now know that happens to some poor kids and don’t want that to be our kids story! Like hearing about JonBenet Ramsey messed with my mom because it was in fathomable and my brothers her age. I knew about that crap growing up and worst stuff now. I keep my kids closer. The generation of moms now grew up hearing stories like Elizabeth Smarts.
The main reason I will never let my kids ride their bikes on backroads like I did when I was a kid I because of cell phones. They turn the vast majority of drivers into "drunk drivers" ... and they are on the road 24/7 now, not just on holidays or late at night on weekends. Unfortunately, smart phones and social media have made it dangerous for kids to be as independent as they used to be -- distracted driving, stalking, human trafficking, and the fact that most adults are also too distracted to observe and be mindful of the safety of other kids (i.e. community watch) -- makes giving kids that 80s kind of freedom come at a much higher risk than when the world was without the distractions of technology. So I am very sorry to you and all the other teens/tweens of today! Of course, there are still ways to unplug and have fun depending on where you live (city, country, suburbia)! I challenge you to find those ways with your friends or make new friends with other like-minded kids around you. This sounds cliche, but be the change you want to see. I am going to stop right there before I go off on an adult tangent. 🙃 By the way, I think you are right about the cartridge reinsert. ☺
@@oneofmany7051 Your concerns about distracted driving are legit. However, kidnapping rates (by total strangers) are much much lower than in the 80s. Most kidnappings that happen now are custody issues. As for human trafficking, it does happen, but homeless teens are the highest risk for that. Teach your kids street smarts and to assume no driver sees them, and they'll be ok.
The people aren't the same as the 70s and 80s. The ignorant got bold and some of the teens.... IF I had younger children these days they would have call only phones and GPS 24/7. They would have to check in every 30 minutes outside of a 5-10 minute wi dow I would call all my family to track them down it's crazy out there. Was then but now worse.
I think we worry so much about our kids because of what we did in the 80's....😅... the best of times. You should get the neighbor and do an 80's hair, makeup, clothes and party.. get the Blue eyeshadow out😄

Kim, because of this video, I realize that because I've been a stay-at-home mom, all these years I kind of been able to give my daughter that 1980s summer. We still live in a neighborhood that my daughter was able to still ring a doorbell and asked if someone could come out and play. Yes we did have summer camp, but I didn't make her go everyday. I didn't give her a phone until she was in Middle School, when she started walking home on her own. Yes she plays more video games now but up until middle school, I'm proud to say she played with toys and friends outside in the sun. I guess we've been lucky.
No walking home til Middle school? In the 60's I walked to school in first grade with a group and had to cross I-10 on a foot bridge. Probably created my fear of heights. My kids walked to my school or rode the bus home.
I hear ya!😊 I walked home with my older brother from 1st grade on but she didn't have anyone to walk home with because all the mom's picked up their kids from school. She's an only child. God only blessed me once. Plus I think our school didn't allow kids to walk home on their own until 4th grade. She told me when she was ready to do it on her own. 🤗
The only thing you forgot was rolling blading! My brother and I would wake up, eat breakfast, make ourselves some sandwiches (try to sneak some of our school snacks and desserts) stuff our backpacks with whatever we needed, ran to our bikes and we wouldn't come back home until the street lights came home. We were lucky in that we grew up on an Air Force Base. That allowed us to travel travel the Base rather freely after we knee where we absolutely couldn't go. Still, we had so much fun and it felt incredible. Like we had this big world to travel. And because is was a Base, its easy to understand why my parents were never worried.
@@crzycolchris I can on wonder about the 2010's/2020's. I grew up during the the 90's and early 2000's. I actually just turned 36 this past May, however I do know what you mean by riding past Air force hangers, just not Air Force One hangers.😂 I was raised on one of the top intelligence Air Force Bases in the country, although after 9/11 that shifted a great deal of the way we lived including our freedom to ride our bikes around because we were one of the bases considered a target for a terrorist attack. So all signs for buildings were covered, the Base had jets that flew over it regularly, MP's were more around than ever before, and our ability to move around was very restricted, including bike riding.
I love how in the 80's a broken bone was treated like an oversized splinter. Skinned knees but a little peroxide, mecurichrome and blow on it and presto back out to play. Head injuries? Were they even a thing back then? You bust your head and your parents are freaking out over what you might've broken. If you weren't dead or bleeding out you were probably fine. If we hurt ourselves the motto was "and why exactly were you doing that?" Or "it doesn't look broken, now back outside and play." I raised my son on hose water and as much just exploring around outside as possible. I had someone call the cop's for letting my son "play in the front yard unsupervised", he was 12 and we lived in a gated community and he was looking for "cool rocks and stuff". I was indoors and could see him just fine out the window. You would've thought I murdered someone over the reaction. Sadly I've heard from other parents all over the US who have had issues with ppl letting children be children.
Yes! The "S"! I'm ALL about kids being bored. If they say that they're bored, I make them clean, so they generally tend to find things to do. And isn't it funny because if one of my kid's friends showed up unannounced to play, I would be fine with it, but I would never actually send my own children over to someone else's house unannounced.
This reminds me of my summers as a kid in the 90s. “Knock on their door unannounced” 😂 we always did that in my neighborhood. We never called lol. And the S Chain! I always did that when I was bored in class 😂
I remember the summer my best friend and I planned an epic adventure to explore the sewers by the bike trails in our neighborhood. I think we spent more time planning than actually exploring! We were given free reign with our bikes and backpacks around our part of town. Our parents had no idea what we were up to most of the time. Biking to buy candy, living on blue raspberry Popsicles and cheese nips, sitting directly in front of the box fan in our un air conditioned sun room, reading the days away watching people pass by our home, dancing to the beach boys with pillows as our surfboards, and spending hours drawing.
Just make sure you let the hose run a bit before you drink. Hot metal hose water in 95°F Florida summer is not pleasant. I still have a small scar on my inside of my lip from that one.
Love it! I was more a 70's rather than 80's but only camp I ever attended was girl scout camp. There was no such thing as all the camps they have these days! Bikes, come home when the light comes on, drink out of the hose, grab some fruit off the orange trees. Boom!
Summers were great in the 60's and 70's. So much time to climb trees with iced tea and a good book, oh man, the memories are flooding back in. Baseball with the doghouse as first base, playing war as Germans and good guys fighting with stick guns, dirt clod fights in field next to our subdivision, playing Tarzan! Who gets to be Cheetah (the chimp)? Crafts! Sadly no puffy paint. Love those t-shirts! Where else would you get water but from the hose? That made it so easy to accidentally get wet.
As a 13-year old in the early 80s, I would ride my bike 3 miles each way to get to the best arcade in the region. Pac-Man, centipede, Tron….I’d be listening to my Walkman while biking, no helmet, and navigated some pretty intense suburban Chicago traffic to spend an afternoon of fun at the arcade! 80s summers rule!
Ooh!! Centipede was my JAM!! My friends were good at galaga but I could never do that one!! Friday nite treat was getting a donut at Dunkin donuts next door to the arcade after mom dropped us off!!!?
1989 kid here and I loved coding camp, but I also used to "cash-in" my Girl Scout cookie money to and go to GS Camp, plus I had an awesome Public Library with a summer club all the "cool kids" went to. Just say, 1990s-early 2000s summers rocked too. (Anyone else remember giant trampolines without nets around them and making cool but probably unsafe jumps to get off them?) PS I love puffy paint Kim needs to look up Moriah Elizabeth to see what she does with it!

Pre-90s kids had the BEST childhoods! Parents kicked us outside as soon as our chores were done. PBJ with koolaid sitting on the lawn. Happiness was money to go to the store for popsicles. Swimming, climbing trees, riding bikes. Major excitement was a road trip to visit family! If you were good, you got ice cream on the way home that dribbled down your arm in the heat before you could finish it . No schedules. No hovering parents . Just laying on a blanket on the grass looking up at the clouds.
Most of our parents wont let us have an 80s summer tho!!! All our parents need to know where we are, wont let us go ride bikes alone, wont let us hang with friends unless its planned, wont let us drink for the hose, wont let us literally do anything. Then they complain we dont do anything......

For us who grew up in the 80's, this is SO on point, especially the water hose for hydration. I loved that part. And I used to ride my bike all over the place and would be gone for hours. Things have definitely changed. Thanks for the great video.
We have these carefree summers. Everyone is so overbooked and scheaduled. I love getting up and asking my kids what so they want to do that day or week. Plus I want to enjoy being out and not feel like I'm just driving them everywhere
As a teacher; my best advice is to let kids play, be active, create, read, make, socialise( depending on their needs). Please stop filling up their days- they need to be kids. And they will make a mess, be destructive, get things wrong, upset & annoy you cause you know- they’re kids… but they can be your greatest joy if you relax and enjoy them.
Why should kids only be able to have this kind of fun. I am 26, and still know when to have fun and be serious with my job and everything. And I still annoy my parents sometimes. Lol. I might never outgrow that. All about letting that inner child out. 😜🤪
This just brought back memories.Ugh!!! Thanks... My kids said they don't want to go to camp, cool with me. However, I did look and get options for them. I worked in a Psych hospital for many years and you don't know how many moms and dads that where so stressed about raising their kids "perfectly". We've, gotta relax they will be fine. I have to admit I am more stressed now that I have one child who is picking a college to attend soon.
Dear God, stay strong and hope they decide on a tradeschool. I'd be hyperventilating over the price of tuition. My Mom told me you want college do community college for the first 2yrs and save money to get into a school that's in the area you want to study in. Not very glamorous but it does provide an opportunity for education.
Children have to realize that college or a trade school is not always worth the time and money. Take it from a 26 year old. I was planning on attending a community college in my homestate, but ended up moving out of state and decided to jump right into the workforce. I am doing just fine, and am able to travel around quite often. I mostly save my money for my car payments, gas, groceries, and travel. It just depends on what a person wants to do in their life. Not every job requires a college degree, and you can still make a great amount of money without a college degree. Just thought I’d throw that out there. If I have a kid one day, I would encourage them that they do not have to go to college to be successful and live a happy life
I was just thinking about this today. We used to ride our bikes all day and walk to the pool, and read when we were bored with the three channels on TV. I want my kids to experience the same.
Omg. As a late 70s/early 80s kid, I am so done texting parents for play dates. Told 10 yr old kid to walk to friends house and knock on door. He freaked at the idea. Ugh. Should have started this much sooner. And I think a home phone would be a blessing. Let him call his friends. I'm not the social coordinator.
I grew up in the early seventies. I drank water out of the garden hose, hung out with my friends in the neighborhood or in the woods for hours on end with my parents having no idea where I was. I also rode my bike without a helmet and went swimming with my friends in a rural local pond and we were totally unsupervised and didn't drown. I'm surprised I survived. But those were good times!
I love this!!! Yep totally remember doing the Ss like that one on your t shirt. We just went 2 weeks without screen time to start our summer and it was the best idea ever. My son complained a lot at first. But then he did play with his friends a lot and read books and found other things to do. I think I’m going to start every summer off that way! It was good for me too to be unplugged for a while. I was able to practice a lot more awareness and just enjoy being with my kids. I totally support your 80s summer idea! Love it, Kim!

Yes!!!!! I went to sign up for swim lessons 2 hours after it opened up and I got one of the last spots. The 80’s were so much simpler. I want to be a mom in the 80’s 😢. Spaghetti-Os from a can, push pops, lucky charms, drinking from the hose and being out with friends all day. I basically lived at the swimming pool, riding my bike to and from.
I so wish I could go back the the 80s and have all the fun I had back then. I might do a few things differently like not going down a long steep hill with a skateboard under each foot... I swear I never saw that light post on the side of the road, it just jumped out and hit me 🤕

Now my kids are running around house looking for batteries after just playing for an hour and it freezes. Or asking me to call the cable company cause wifi is freezing up so much. 🙃 Lunch we made our own sandwiches, and fried bologna and tortilla taco. 😋 This video made my day, one of your best so far. I'm a 90's kid and my summers I recall consisted of swimming in the backyard pool as often as possible. Playing in the backyard with toys in my secret place under a tree. Drank from the hose too, very cold, refreshing water. Played with rocks. Rode my bike all over the place and down to the lake by myself quite often and swung by my friend's house a few times. He had a Playstation so we'd play a few games before going back outside or sneaking around his dad's shop. He also had a bow and arrow too. We would go into the woods to play or chill in a makeshift treehouse. I'd always be home for lunches and dinner as that's when my parents would be home and my sister would be back from her friend's house too. I did that all the way through up to the advent of technology when computers were advanced enough and the internet was much faster at home.
This '80s kid lived out in the sticks. And while I did have a bicycle, some of my friends lived over a mile away so it was quicker to get there on my Honda ATC. :) And it was a pretty sweet one; it was a '76 ATC90 with a big-bore kit and custom paint.

70's kid; we spent so much time on our banana seat bikes hanging out in neighbourhood groups, playing hide and seek. When school was out we headed to our cottage and I hung out with all of my older friends (I was 5 years younger than the next youngest kid), rowing our rowboats, getting rides in the older boy's motor boats, water skiing, fishing, going for long nature walks, collecting rocks, driftwood, and shells, listening to the radio, and singing around the campfire every night. My teenaged friends loved to spend endless hours tanning in the hot sun, using coppertone or just baby oil, but I was much younger and sat in the shade reading, lol.

No, they weren't. EVERY generation looks back to the "good ol' days." In the 80s we envied how simple the 70s were and in the 70s we longed for the simplicity and joy of the 60s and 50s.

I was 5 years old and all I had to do was tell my Mom I was going to so and so's house. That was all the permission I needed. It didn't matter that I never actually went to so and so's house. I would walk for blocks going to houses of other friends. I only had to be back for meals. I can't believe the amount of freedom I had and without fear.
Not the 70's I was the 80's but, my brother and I could go anywhere as long as we were together. We used to ride our bikes across town to play at a park called Bryant's Park. We would swim there. It was where two rivers merged.
Guess why the park was named Bryant's park.... a boy named Bryant drowned in the river there 😳 I didn't find that out until years later.
The 1980's were such a different time. The music, fashion, movies, and social activities. The drive-in movies, roller rinks, arcades, drive-in places to eat, and pumpkin patches. It was a good time to be young and alive.

I’m an Xer. I vaguely remember a Barq’s drive-in and a drive-in movie from when I was a toddler in 1972. They were left over from the fifties. There wasn’t a drive-in anywhere in sight in the 80s where I grew up. Roller rinks and arcades, or better yet a combination of the two, were everything though.

Oh how I miss those summers! I used to ride my bike to the library to pick out a good book and then ride back home and spend the afternoon in my backyard in a lawn chair reading it. I only WISH I had that kind of free time now. Not to mention the thrill of hearing the bell of the snow cone 'tricyle' that would come through the neighborhood and the exitement of what flavor they would have that day 😊
I LOVED puffy paint as a kid, and 110% drew my S's like that! I told my kids that we'd leave for the day on our bikes, our parents had no idea where we were and we just had to make it home by dusk, and they were astounded. Oh, the good ol' days. No cell phones or email, I long for it!

LOL I had a lot of boring summer days trying to figure things out in the 70's. So I listened to music a lot and contemplated life. Also went fishing and rode my bike and yes jumped fences and drank from a hose. I turned 60 yesterday so it must not have been too bad for me. But I've never had a concussion either ;)
We got pool passes to the city pools. The closest one was 2.5 miles away. Since we walked everywhere, we could take up a whole day with swimming: walk there, swim several hours, walk home. The thing that’s hard for me to comprehend is that after all that, we *still* had the energy to skateboard, or shoot hoops, or play frisbee, or ride bikes-or even some combination of these!

Lived in NW Arkansas in a tiny town (dirt roads and everything) when I was a teenager. Had ONE TV channel. My Mom said bored was a bad word. Using it meant you needed someone else to plan your day and she was happy to help (and it wasn't summer camp). We found plenty to do.
I'm of the mind that boredom is good for kids--and I passed along my mom's lesson. It sparks a lot of creativity. I wrote a (terrible) novel at age thirteen, learned to play an instrument, read everything in the house (including how to manuals), hiked, rode horses, etc. My oldest son taught himself how to play guitar (he also filmed his friends jumping their bikes off bluffs *sigh*). My others did things like paint, hike, teach themselves photography, etc. To my delight they've taken these interests into adulthood.

The 80’s were the best. Every time we are at Hobby Lobby in the sticker aisle I tell my daughter how we used to SEARCH for stickers to collect and we had a sticker book.
Last week she went on a bike ride with a friend and the around dusk I told my husband, “She needs to come home. This isn’t Stranger Things, this isn’t The Goonies” 😂
She came home and said “That was fun, it felt like I was in Stranger Things.” My husband and I looked at each other and burst out laughing.
How could I forget about sticker books?! That takes me back!

Kid's really don't have any idea the lengths we'd go to for stickers, scented markers, dollar store toys, little green army soldiers, tie dye, puffy paint etc. I wish every kid could experience at least 1 full week of 80's summer in their life.
I haven’t thought about sticker books in forever! I had a binder with 9-pocket plastic baseball card sheets to keep them all organized. Wow. Takes me back!😜

Homemade slip-n-slide cost me a concussion; overshot into a car. Bike with no helmet; locked up the front brakes, and went over the handlebars. Walking down a bike trail, and slip/falling into a river cost me a concussion, and I almost drowned. Football cost me 2 concussions. It's amazing I can talk without drooling on myself.

Cracked my skull open on a brass bed post, slipped on ice and fell face first into a speed bump, slipped on roller skates and hit head multiple times, brother threw a baseball straight into my ear, did boxing for a while, hit my head closing the lid of a tank. LMBO 🤣 I don't have a chance. I am currently taking care of my father who has early onset Alzheimer's - may or may not be connected but, he had many concussions too.
My husband is the kid who always needed stitches! I always say he's held together by a thread!🤣
OMG yes. This was my 80s youth, and it's exactly what I wanted for my kids, but society has changed. So many parents can't handle the whole spontaneous hang out - it has to be scheduled. We intentionally DON'T fill the summer (other than camps, classes, or activities the kids pick) but recapturing the free range teen days just doesn't seem to fly in this generation.
I have intentionally left summers pretty unscheduled for my kids, but many of our friends schedule away every last day which means no fun carefree play days whenever we want. So years ago I began schooling through the summers, but have now gone back to having a summer again. Our younger kids have enjoyed the summer breaks.... riding scooters and bikes to the neighbors to play, swinging in the backyard, and spending afternoons at the pool. I still like to know where they're at, but I don't hover. It has reminded me of my childhood days and the adventures I had with my best friend.
Nothing like poverty to ensure sufficient down time. Not the childhood I wanted for my kids, but it wasn't the worst.
Came to see if anyone had commented on this! In my experience, unplanned visits are not welcome and it's even hard to schedule a play date if you wait too late into the summer.
I went to a summer camp specifically put together by a major hospital for Type 1 diabetic kids, in the mountains, in the early 80's. I was 13. I went for two weeks, and in that time, we went on a five mile hike and slept under tarps for the night. Our counselors made the mistake of drawing drinking water from the creek that fed the camp's lake... and because they didn't filter it, a lot of the kids on that hike (myself included), ended up with amoebic dysentery. Which, at the time and given the crude tools we had back then of managing this illness, could have been life-threatening. These days, we have Covid and monkeypox, so really, not much has changed as far as trying to avoid getting sick while managing a chronic condition. Wear a mask, wash your hands, don't drink directly from the creek and don't drink what your camp counselor gives you.

70s kid- lots of bike time! To the park, to the library, to Thrifty to get an ice cream cone. Lots of crafts- I loved crafts and drawing. Blanket forts to read your book in. I rode my bike to the local stables and did chores to get riding lessons and hung out for hours. Good times!!
I SMH when I see how much kids are 'helicoptered' today compared to when I grew up. Parents need to know where their kids are every moment of every day. They will be ill-equipped to handle the real world when they reach adulthood and have to think for themselves.

Also, I know what the blowing helps! The trick is, it actually doesn’t. It just makes you take out the cartridge and re-insert it.
Puffy paint is great! And most kids learn the “cool s” around fourth or fifth grade.
Excuse me, blowing helps because in those games dust bunnies and dirt get in there. It’d be like having a slot as big as your phone to plug a charger into. You have to blow the dirt away sometimes.
We would love to give you that freedom! Unfortunately this world is full of more crazy people than there used to be and the internet exposed us to what could actually happen to you. We love our kids too much to let them be tortured then die or groomed into doing stuff while you’re gone and come home later. We now know that happens to some poor kids and don’t want that to be our kids story! Like hearing about JonBenet Ramsey messed with my mom because it was in fathomable and my brothers her age. I knew about that crap growing up and worst stuff now. I keep my kids closer. The generation of moms now grew up hearing stories like Elizabeth Smarts.
The main reason I will never let my kids ride their bikes on backroads like I did when I was a kid I because of cell phones. They turn the vast majority of drivers into "drunk drivers" ... and they are on the road 24/7 now, not just on holidays or late at night on weekends. Unfortunately, smart phones and social media have made it dangerous for kids to be as independent as they used to be -- distracted driving, stalking, human trafficking, and the fact that most adults are also too distracted to observe and be mindful of the safety of other kids (i.e. community watch) -- makes giving kids that 80s kind of freedom come at a much higher risk than when the world was without the distractions of technology.
So I am very sorry to you and all the other teens/tweens of today! Of course, there are still ways to unplug and have fun depending on where you live (city, country, suburbia)! I challenge you to find those ways with your friends or make new friends with other like-minded kids around you. This sounds cliche, but be the change you want to see. I am going to stop right there before I go off on an adult tangent. 🙃 By the way, I think you are right about the cartridge reinsert. ☺

@@oneofmany7051 Your concerns about distracted driving are legit. However, kidnapping rates (by total strangers) are much much lower than in the 80s. Most kidnappings that happen now are custody issues. As for human trafficking, it does happen, but homeless teens are the highest risk for that. Teach your kids street smarts and to assume no driver sees them, and they'll be ok.
The people aren't the same as the 70s and 80s. The ignorant got bold and some of the teens.... IF I had younger children these days they would have call only phones and GPS 24/7. They would have to check in every 30 minutes outside of a 5-10 minute wi dow I would call all my family to track them down it's crazy out there. Was then but now worse.

Kim, because of this video, I realize that because I've been a stay-at-home mom, all these years I kind of been able to give my daughter that 1980s summer. We still live in a neighborhood that my daughter was able to still ring a doorbell and asked if someone could come out and play. Yes we did have summer camp, but I didn't make her go everyday. I didn't give her a phone until she was in Middle School, when she started walking home on her own. Yes she plays more video games now but up until middle school, I'm proud to say she played with toys and friends outside in the sun. I guess we've been lucky.
No walking home til Middle school? In the 60's I walked to school in first grade with a group and had to cross I-10 on a foot bridge. Probably created my fear of heights. My kids walked to my school or rode the bus home.
I hear ya!😊 I walked home with my older brother from 1st grade on but she didn't have anyone to walk home with because all the mom's picked up their kids from school. She's an only child. God only blessed me once.
Plus I think our school didn't allow kids to walk home on their own until 4th grade. She told me when she was ready to do it on her own. 🤗

The only thing you forgot was rolling blading! My brother and I would wake up, eat breakfast, make ourselves some sandwiches (try to sneak some of our school snacks and desserts) stuff our backpacks with whatever we needed, ran to our bikes and we wouldn't come back home until the street lights came home. We were lucky in that we grew up on an Air Force Base. That allowed us to travel travel the Base rather freely after we knee where we absolutely couldn't go. Still, we had so much fun and it felt incredible. Like we had this big world to travel. And because is was a Base, its easy to understand why my parents were never worried.
@@crzycolchris I can on wonder about the 2010's/2020's. I grew up during the the 90's and early 2000's. I actually just turned 36 this past May, however I do know what you mean by riding past Air force hangers, just not Air Force One hangers.😂 I was raised on one of the top intelligence Air Force Bases in the country, although after 9/11 that shifted a great deal of the way we lived including our freedom to ride our bikes around because we were one of the bases considered a target for a terrorist attack. So all signs for buildings were covered, the Base had jets that flew over it regularly, MP's were more around than ever before, and our ability to move around was very restricted, including bike riding.
I love how in the 80's a broken bone was treated like an oversized splinter. Skinned knees but a little peroxide, mecurichrome and blow on it and presto back out to play. Head injuries? Were they even a thing back then? You bust your head and your parents are freaking out over what you might've broken. If you weren't dead or bleeding out you were probably fine. If we hurt ourselves the motto was "and why exactly were you doing that?" Or "it doesn't look broken, now back outside and play."
I raised my son on hose water and as much just exploring around outside as possible. I had someone call the cop's for letting my son "play in the front yard unsupervised", he was 12 and we lived in a gated community and he was looking for "cool rocks and stuff".
I was indoors and could see him just fine out the window. You would've thought I murdered someone over the reaction. Sadly I've heard from other parents all over the US who have had issues with ppl letting children be children.
Yes! The "S"! I'm ALL about kids being bored. If they say that they're bored, I make them clean, so they generally tend to find things to do. And isn't it funny because if one of my kid's friends showed up unannounced to play, I would be fine with it, but I would never actually send my own children over to someone else's house unannounced.

I remember the summer my best friend and I planned an epic adventure to explore the sewers by the bike trails in our neighborhood. I think we spent more time planning than actually exploring! We were given free reign with our bikes and backpacks around our part of town. Our parents had no idea what we were up to most of the time. Biking to buy candy, living on blue raspberry Popsicles and cheese nips, sitting directly in front of the box fan in our un air conditioned sun room, reading the days away watching people pass by our home, dancing to the beach boys with pillows as our surfboards, and spending hours drawing.

Love it! I was more a 70's rather than 80's but only camp I ever attended was girl scout camp. There was no such thing as all the camps they have these days! Bikes, come home when the light comes on, drink out of the hose, grab some fruit off the orange trees. Boom!
Summers were great in the 60's and 70's. So much time to climb trees with iced tea and a good book, oh man, the memories are flooding back in. Baseball with the doghouse as first base, playing war as Germans and good guys fighting with stick guns, dirt clod fights in field next to our subdivision, playing Tarzan! Who gets to be Cheetah (the chimp)?

As a 13-year old in the early 80s, I would ride my bike 3 miles each way to get to the best arcade in the region. Pac-Man, centipede, Tron….I’d be listening to my Walkman while biking, no helmet, and navigated some pretty intense suburban Chicago traffic to spend an afternoon of fun at the arcade! 80s summers rule!
Ooh!! Centipede was my JAM!! My friends were good at galaga but I could never do that one!! Friday nite treat was getting a donut at Dunkin donuts next door to the arcade after mom dropped us off!!!?

1989 kid here and I loved coding camp, but I also used to "cash-in" my Girl Scout cookie money to and go to GS Camp, plus I had an awesome Public Library with a summer club all the "cool kids" went to. Just say, 1990s-early 2000s summers rocked too. (Anyone else remember giant trampolines without nets around them and making cool but probably unsafe jumps to get off them?) Pre-90s kids had the BEST childhoods! Parents kicked us outside as soon as our chores were done. PBJ with koolaid sitting on the lawn. Happiness was money to go to the store for popsicles. Swimming, climbing trees, riding bikes. Major excitement was a road trip to visit family! If you were good, you got ice cream on the way home that dribbled down your arm in the heat before you could finish it . No schedules. No hovering parents . Just laying on a blanket on the grass looking up at the clouds.

Most of our parents wont let us have an 80s summer tho!!! All our parents need to know where we are, wont let us go ride bikes alone, wont let us hang with friends unless its planned, wont let us drink for the hose, wont let us literally do anything. Then they complain we dont do anything......

We have these carefree summers. Everyone is so overbooked and scheaduled. I love getting up and asking my kids what so they want to do that day or week. Plus I want to enjoy being out and not feel like I'm just driving them everywhere
As a teacher; my best advice is to let kids play, be active, create, read, make, socialise( depending on their needs). Please stop filling up their days- they need to be kids. And they will make a mess, be destructive, get things wrong, upset & annoy you cause you know- they’re kids… but they can be your greatest joy if you relax and enjoy them.
Why should kids only be able to have this kind of fun. I am 26, and still know when to have fun and be serious with my job and everything. And I still annoy my parents sometimes. Lol. I might never outgrow that. All about letting that inner child out. 😜🤪
This just brought back memories.Ugh!!! Thanks... My kids said they don't want to go to camp, cool with me. However, I did look and get options for them. I worked in a Psych hospital for many years and you don't know how many moms and dads that where so stressed about raising their kids "perfectly". We've, gotta relax they will be fine. I have to admit I am more stressed now that I have one child who is picking a college to attend soon.

I'd be hyperventilating over the price of tuition. My Mom told me you want college do community college for the first 2yrs and save money to get into a school that's in the area you want to study in.
Not very glamorous but it does provide an opportunity for education.
Children have to realize that college or a trade school is not always worth the time and money. Take it from a 26 year old. I was planning on attending a community college in my homestate, but ended up moving out of state and decided to jump right into the workforce. I am doing just fine, and am able to travel around quite often. I mostly save my money for my car payments, gas, groceries, and travel. It just depends on what a person wants to do in their life. Not every job requires a college degree, and you can still make a great amount of money without a college degree. Just thought I’d throw that out there. If I have a kid one day, I would encourage them that they do not have to go to college to be successful and live a happy life

Omg. As a late 70s/early 80s kid, I am so done texting parents for play dates. Told 10 yr old kid to walk to friends house and knock on door. He freaked at the idea. Ugh. Should have started this much sooner. And I think a home phone would be a blessing. Let him call his friends. I'm not the social coordinator.

I grew up in the early seventies. I drank water out of the garden hose, hung out with my friends in the neighborhood or in the woods for hours on end with my parents having no idea where I was. I also rode my bike without a helmet and went swimming with my friends in a rural local pond and we were totally unsupervised and didn't drown. I'm surprised I survived. But those were good times!

My son complained a lot at first. But then he did play with his friends a lot and read books and found other things to do. I think I’m going to start every summer off that way! It was good for me too to be unplugged for a while. I was able to practice a lot more awareness and just enjoy being with my kids. I totally support your 80s summer idea! Love it, Kim!

Spaghetti-Os from a can, push pops, lucky charms, drinking from the hose and being out with friends all day. I basically lived at the swimming pool, riding my bike to and from.
I so wish I could go back the the 80s and have all the fun I had back then. I might do a few things differently like not going down a long steep hill with a skateboard under each foot... I swear I never saw that light post on the side of the road, it just jumped out and hit me 🤕

1980's prices would be fabulous right now. Also, they had the best music and zero internet or smartphones. It was just us kids and the outdoors.
Hilarious 😂 drinking from hose the best , I still drink from hose if I'm watering outside. 🤣 Blowing into atari game brings back so many memories. Now my kids are running around house looking for batteries after just playing for an hour and it freezes. Or asking me to call the cable company cause wifi is freezing up so much. 🙃 Lunch we made our own sandwiches, and fried bologna and tortilla taco. 😋 This video made my day, one of your best so far. Thanks for the memories. 😊
My son said "I grossed him out" the day he first saw me drink from the hose, he gagged but then he went for a drink himself.

I'm a 90's kid and my summers I recall consisted of swimming in the backyard pool as often as possible. Playing in the backyard with toys in my secret place under a tree. Drank from the hose too, very cold, refreshing water. Played with rocks. Rode my bike all over the place and down to the lake by myself quite often and swung by my friend's house a few times. He had a Playstation so we'd play a few games before going back outside or sneaking around his dad's shop. He also had a bow and arrow too. We would go into the woods to play or chill in a makeshift treehouse. I'd always be home for lunches and dinner as that's when my parents would be home and my sister would be back from her friend's house too. I did that all the way through up to the advent of technology when computers were advanced enough and the internet was much faster at home.

This '80s kid lived out in the sticks. And while I did have a bicycle, some of my friends lived over a mile away so it was quicker to get there on my Honda ATC. :) And it was a pretty sweet one; it was a '76 ATC90 with a big-bore kit and custom paint.

Lol cute video. My mom did puffy paint all the time for t shirts and she used a hair dryer to dry it faster! the paint hardened within an hour or two. :D
70's kid; we spent so much time on our banana seat bikes hanging out in neighbourhood groups, playing hide and seek. When school was out we headed to our cottage and I hung out with all of my older friends (I was 5 years younger than the next youngest kid), rowing our rowboats, getting rides in the older boy's motor boats, water skiing, fishing, going for long nature walks, collecting rocks, driftwood, and shells, listening to the radio, and singing around the campfire every night. My teenaged friends loved to spend endless hours tanning in the hot sun, using coppertone or just baby oil, but I was much younger and sat in the shade reading, lol.
My wife just wants that dolphin shirt! And to do puff paint shirts with you. Those summers in the 80s were the best!
