    I'm sorry your experience of college in Dublin was lacklustre! I think the experience of college in Dublin was very different from college outside of it. Because there are so many universities in Dublin it's hard to be as niche and there isn't as much community because they are so big (I did an MSc in trinity). With smaller colleges like Maynooth (where I did my degree) and NUI Galway (I worked there), there is a much bigger emphasis on clubs and societies, and you rarely went a day without seeing someone you knew just walking around the campus. Dublin colleges definitely felt a bit disparate in comparison, and my friend's experiences were similar to yours.

    • @Pax_Veritas
      @Pax_Veritas 2 года назад +2

      Mate I'm a local and I'm surprised about how developed we are. I'm old enough to remember when Ireland was considered a poor country and still have a hangover from that. Ireland is mostly paper rich though and relies heavily on American, British and European multi-nationals. We are rich but Ireland is a small country. We have eroded our culture through the EU and if these trends continue, Irish will be a minority culture in Ireland within a generation.

    • @TheLastAngryMan01
      @TheLastAngryMan01 2 года назад +4

      @@Pax_Veritas I wouldn’t say that there are that many British multinationals in Ireland in the leading sectors, unless you’re thinking of high street chains like Boots or Tesco. American multinationals certainly.
      How has Irish culture been eroded by the EU? We still have Gaelic games, Irish music and dance, the ploughing championships, the Wren Boys, the Toy Show, Tayto, bacon and cabbage, fried breakfasts etc. etc. What has disappeared?

    • @Ben-mx1ip
      @Ben-mx1ip 2 года назад +1

      @@TheLastAngryMan01 Many teenagers in Dublin have American accents, as do many Sligo teenagers, although this is a seemingly insignificant symptom. The EU/Irish government plan is to import a million foreign nationals by 2040, about 20% in addition of our current population.
      The average person is more concerned with being part of Europe and living the globalist ideals of the EU rather than conserving Irish culture and Irish interests. You just added a bunch of Tokenism under the guise of "Irishness". Lol at "bacon and cabbage", "fried breakfasts, Tayto" and "the Toy Show". That was sad to read.
      We ignore our home homeless crisis, we ignore the housing crisis despite it affecting everyone that wasn't born pre 70s, yet can come with plenty of money to house non-citizens.

    • @TheLastAngryMan01
      @TheLastAngryMan01 2 года назад

      @@Ben-mx1ip I don't really get how you think the EU is influencing the development of pseudo-American accents among teenagers. John Healy was complaining about the popularity of the American tv shows like Batman in Death of an Irish Town several years before we joined the EU. It happens everywhere where US tv has a presence, which is a lot of places.
      As for Irish culture, call those things "tokenism" if you like, but they are indisputably things that crop up in Ireland and nowhere else. I could throw in sean-nós, the fleadh ceoil na h-éireann, bonfire fire night on the summer solstice, barm brack, trips to the Gaeltacht, the national theatre, St. Patrick's Day festivals, the Lisdoonvarna matchmaking festival, the FAI Junior Cup, the Puck Fair, Irish wakes and a lot more besides. I get a sense of you pining for comely maidens dancing at the cross-roads, but you're unlikely to see a fully Gaelic Ireland as that has been declining for the past two hundred years or more.
      The homeless crisis is just that, but it's manufactured at home. The EU and other international organizations (the OECD) warned Ireland during the the Tiger years that we were setting ourselves up for fall, but our arrogant clowns in FF/PDs ignored them, until they had to go cap in hand for a bailout. The housing crisis is a consequence of having sold much of the housing stock to American vulture funds at knockdown prices, and then failing to regulate them afterwards (FF/FG being funded by the construction lobby and landlords). Most of the Ukrainian refugees are being put up in hotels, the army barracks or even the airport in any case.
      The Plan 2040 thing is another canard. The additional one million people target mostly refers to internal population growth, given that we have a natural population growth of circa 175,000 people last year alone. In the space of twenty years, an extra 1 million people is probably a conservative estimate, in the absence of some sort of natural or economic disaster.
      I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you anyway, given the Irish Government's record on planning. How long are we waiting for a metro link to the airport now, 20 years?

    I only take issue with your thoughts that maybe Irish life is more laid back with work/play balance vs. NYC or the US because of socialized medicine? lol. One has NOTHING to do with the other. Please keep in mind, the vast vast majority of Americans have access to healthcare. Maybe 10 to 15M don't. And that out of 350M people so you do the math. And it's usually younger college age kids that don't have jobs and aren't eligible via their parent's plan. But here is my theory, as a native NYer born and mostly raised with Irish parents. I also lived in Dublin in the 80s as a child for 5 years. So my perspective is quite unique. HARD WORK is the AMERICAN WAY!!! There's a reason why we have the greatest economy ever know to man! People in America, with their freedom and knowing they can become generationally wealthy, will work to no end to reach that goal. In the US, it's most people's dream to run their own business. In Ireland, they work so they have money to feed their kids but also go to the pub and drink. It's a much more less motivated culture. Irish people love to drink and socialize. Nothing wrong with it, just saying. So no, medicine has nothing to do with it.
