One of my oldest and dearest friends passed away last year, aged 49. I volunteered to go through his record collection, and find homes for his CDs and vinyl. I knew he was a big ‘Tull fan, and he’d seen them live many times, but I didn’t expect to see copies of every album, box set and anthology, then most, if not all of the respective solo albums by Ian Anderson and other members of ‘Tull. So, Ian, if you do read these comments - please raise a glass to my good friend, Daniel Salter, who was a loyal, enthusiastic and long-standing fan of your music!

Ian Anderson is the greatest talent the world of music has ever had. I can't imagine how poor the world would be without this genius. My opinion is that Thick As a Brick (Tampa version) is a true masterpiece of musical art.
Ian. It's nice to hear you being humble and talking about patience toward others. We understand, or at least I do. Ian's workman-like approach to writing, performing and recording is an inspiration to all in the "rock" industry that produces so many casualties. It's this approach that helped make Tull great, and amass such a vast catalogue. My biggest regret was not being able to see you in 1974 when I had bought a ticket to one of your performances in London. Only I had to take a physics A Level the following morning and would never have forgiven myself had I failed. And yes, I passed! Back to the original point. I've always believed allowances and almost infinite tolerance must be given likewise to dedicated musicians and creative writers, only THEY know how much work has gone into it. That includes being selfish where necessary to get results. Sorry, but it's true. It can be very lonely at times.
I appreciate his self reflection in this interview. We all have our good and bad days. It must be hard having your bad days and your struggles continually brought up due to fame and the internet. I find him interesting on many levels…..always trying to be better and struggling on…..as do we all. 🤘
I have loved Ians music since 1971 when i got Aqualung. Have every JT Album and Box Set including his solo albums and cant wait until his next release. The man is a musical Genius.
Well, Mr. Anderson, I Met you in the right day. IT was in the Lounge of the CCH in Hamburg before the Concert. maybe IT was the stormwatch Concert. I habe Been There with a little britisch flag with Jethro Tullon IT, painted by myself. All the bandmembers have given me Their signature.
Jethro Tull was my first live show when I was 12-13. I went into band class playing flute and feeling proud because of Ian. I'm so happy to have heard his music and been inspired from it. I even figured out how to snarl into the instrument and overblow from listening! I'm still sharing it today!

As a musician. I played the euphonium i have an ear for music and when i heard Jethro Tull i though wow i am an instant fan. Ian is more than incredible he is a flute god and the voice is the sound of an angel
Jethro Tull back in the 70's were absolutely amazing. The 1971 Isle of Wight concert clips are an excellent example of them in there prime. The new stuff to me sounds like Spinal Tap, but I'll keep listening.
Yet Tull is STILL not in the ‘official Rolling Stone’ R&R Hall of (fill in blank). Shame, Game…..Just because Ian doesn’t have time for Rolling Stone shouldn’t keep JT out of the hall. It’s now 4 DECADES from JT’s greatest output of music. Which makes it evident that Jann Wenner (RS founder editor ego) must have a personal issue with/against Ian. Wenner is a punk. The R&R Hall without Tull is more than an oversight. I stopped reading RS decades ago when bands like Cheap Trick were voted in and still no Tull. Not that there’s anything wrong w Cheap Trick. I saw jethro Tull 3 times, and always when he's get to the edge of the stage people would try to touch his leg when he was dancing about, and it would piss him off a little. In his prime he was one hell of a entertainer and killed on the flute. He's brilliant, and his whole band were great musicians. I'm talking 1971.

You have to admire his work ethic. For a pensioner now into his seventies, and still planning the next record, as opposed to living off his reputation is admirable. I consider that now, both his voice and the quality of his music is in decline, but having said that how many successful prog artists, from the 70's, that are still on the planet, are writing new material and performing. It really is a shame that Martin seems to be completely detached from anything to do with Jethro Tull these days (the band/brand, not the music). He didn't take part in any of the 40th Anniversary interviews or the JT biography that came out a few years ago. And during the 50th anniversary tour Ian didn't even have Martin do a guest appearance like other old band members got, despite Martin being Jethro Tull's second most prominent member throughout it's history.
The story I heard was that they got a gig before they had a name and up to the day of the gigg they still hadn't agreed on a name so they saw the name tag on a bouncer and asked him if they could use his name in exchange for 50 dollars. It was suppose to be temporary but never changed it and it stayed. Don't remember where I heard or read that, it was a long time ago

I thoroughly endorse what the man has to say about digital media as for a person who has had more than a fleeting engagement with the old analogue chemical process. I still have an old Leitz enlarger which I haven't even used yet and a wide aperture lens which projects the most pin sharp images down onto a baseboard which you can only see in the dark. The feeling I get off a digital image is of not at all like the microscopically fine silver halide particle that forms the grain of the black and white image. Digital makes me feel sea sick and analogue is like "barging into solid ground" to quote a well worn phrase.
Ian loved your early music to death saw you 11 times live.. I wore out all your early albums but after maybe heavy horses it has gone downhill like your voice… It’s time to play with the grandkids….
"The Zealot Gene" song is probably the best and most like a Jethro Tull song released on this album, which dropped yesterday and I've had time to listen to a few times. But the lyrics are dense and not certainly strong feeling - but instead confusing and clueless. > "Half of us are in the apple. Half of us are in the pie. All of us are in the pudding." Really? That is a pointless and totally wimpy lyric. I do like the phrase: > the featherweights are on our side Now, that is a phrase, with an instant recognizeable meaning, the germ of an idea that should have been developed, but Ian seems to shy away from saying anything with his music. I don't much care for Jethro Tull with the added wimpyness. So far my inventory of this album is one sort of good tune in "Zealot Gene" with wimpy lyrics, a clever arrangement in Shoshana Sleeping with that kind of squishy guitar sound in the background ... but again, the lyrics are creepy and abstruse ... you don't want abstruceness in fucking song lyrics. I bet Ian is drinking this off in a wimpy bar. ;-)

I’ve been a JT fan since This Was dropped, even inadvertently selected and wore a pair of glasses that were identical to the ones Glen Cornick wore on the Stand Up album. Already being a fan, my friends thought I had done it on purpose. Hey, just roll with it. I'm glad that he uses lightroom etc in his photography. I do too - but sometimes think it's cheating. But - if it's good enough for Ian....!

The sad thing is, that Ian’s voice has totally gone bust. His flute is still brilliant and probably more than ever.

I still have an old Leitz enlarger which I haven't even used yet and a wide aperture lens which projects the most pin sharp images down onto a baseboard which you can only see in the dark. The feeling I get off a digital image is of not at all like the microscopically fine silver halide particle that forms the grain of the black and white image. Digital makes me feel sea sick and analogue is like "barging into solid ground" to quote a well worn phrase.
Does anyone have the album with the book? Did it come with all the biblical passages (list of passages) that came with each song?

"The Zealot Gene" song is probably the best and most like a
Jethro Tull song released on this album, which dropped
yesterday and I've had time to listen to a few times.
But the lyrics are dense and not certainly strong feeling
- but instead confusing and clueless.

I do like the phrase:

Now, that is a phrase, with an instant recognizeable meaning,
the germ of an idea that should have been developed, but Ian
seems to shy away from saying anything with his music. I don't
much care for Jethro Tull with the added wimpyness.
So far my inventory of this album is one sort of good tune in
"Zealot Gene" with wimpy lyrics, a clever arrangement in Shoshana
Sleeping with that kind of squishy guitar sound in the background
... but again, the lyrics are creepy and abstruse ... you don't
want abstruceness in fucking song lyrics.

I’ve been a JT fan since This Was dropped, even inadvertently selected and wore a pair of glasses that were identical to the ones Glen Cornick wore on the Stand Up album. Already being a fan, my friends thought I had done it on purpose. Hey, just roll with it. I just wish Ian Anderson would spend as much time railing against extreme left wing zealotry as he clearly has about the just as loony extreme right wing zealotry. There is no immunity on either end. It seems inconsistent to me. That being said, the man is still as genius as he ever was.

Alright Ian plays the bigger part of of Jethro so having some changes in members over the years makes sense while remaining Jethro . . But . . Martin played a big chemistry part that made Jethro remain Jethro while other members change also . . Ian some how thinks any guitar player will do . . but Martins has a finger print that no other guitarist can imitate that keeps it TUL . .
This New album for me goes in Ian's solo section . . I cant accept it as a TULL album. .

it's a shame that Ian still can't see that he's a product of Western civilisation. And that's a wonderful thing. But he is always trying to run away from that. How can a man be so old and still so confused? If you have no concern for your ancestors and people then your music will be thrown into the scrapbooks of history. You will be erased along with your people. Look at your audience. Who is showing up to listen? What race?
