While I am not a lamp collector I do appreciate vintage items brought back to a usable (and in this case a beautiful) condition. Loved the restoration as always. All the best from across the pond.
Hello Tony! I too enjoy a good restoration regardless of what it is... I remember being fascinated by watching a 25 minute restoration of a 1800's printing press! All good stuff! Tonight I will have a wrench for my Wednesday video! Thanks!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter Great video! I have that same lantern and have it soaking in vinegar right now. I couldn’t seem to get the wick compartment open. Maybe it’s rusted on but I’m not even sure how it opens. Do you have a video on that?
Hey I just ran across this video tonight. It's really early because of the flat fount pre 1920. Look in the center tube for all the patent dates and at the very bottom it should have a date either made s in Syracuse or M for main plant in New York. She's a real Beauty
Hello David! I purposely used shellac to finish the lantern because the alcohol darkens the tin just a tad and makes this lantern look like a NOS (new old stock) lantern that was tucked away for 100 years... If it's too shiny it looks restored... You can see the subtle difference before and after the shellac! Thanks very much!!!
Beautiful lantern. I have a few Royals myself. And not a bad job with the refinish, but there are less harsh ways to remove rust than using vinegar. For example, using PH Down works very well and works faster. Anyway, just want to also let you know that this lantern is missing the globe lift lever and bracket. And the globe plate is installed backwards. To actually restore this lantern you would need to find those missing parts and solder them in place. They are occasionally missing in these old lanterns. Presumably the solder let go over the years and the parts were lost.
Hello Dave! I forgot to mention after the vinegar bath I gave it a 15 minute bath in Baking soda to neutralize the acid! Dave, Remember the old smudge-pots? Those old bowling ball looking lanterns that just had an open flame on top! They used them around construction barricades back before the 70's! Those were crazy! lol Thanks very much!!!!!
Hello Metal Butcher! I like all types of restorations! Especially vintage Drill presses! lol My RUclips Buddy "Joe's Shop" scored a awesome vintage Walker Turner Drill Press! He added a great VFD to it! Look for it at Joe's Shop! Thanks!
You know what's hilarious? My Dad restored a Rockwell drill press that is the same exact model as that Walker Turner, just more modern. It was after Rockwell bought Walker Turner. It's even got the feed box, just a later version. He finished it just a few months ago and also added a VFD. I might have to grab a few photos. It's certainly a nice machine, Joe's looks pretty good after all these years. I hope he does restore it, it would look mighty nice.
Hello Dominic! I hate that! I think of all the awesome things I had that was either thrown away or lost or who knows what! That's why now it's so hard for me to throw anything away, I keep thinking 10 years from now I will be sorry! Lol! Thanks very much!!!!
Hello Gunter! Some times the lantern is pitted or in such bad shape you just have to paint but this lantern was in really good shape and I was able to preserve the original look! We got lucky this time! lol Thanks very much!!
Great Job! I got a Dietz N02 D-lite. Dont know how old it is but its all there,Cleaned it up years ago.Painted it high heat flat black. Thanks for the videos! Cheers!
Hello Mr Headbanger! I couldn't agree more! Even as a kid I was attracted to those old kerosene lanterns.. Lots of people like us out there still! lol Thanks!!!
Another great job. Any chance of doing a more in depth video about lanterns? Maybe one about the different types of lanterns and one about what to look for when buying a lantern?
Hello Norherman, The shame of it is some of these items need to be touched, handled and used to be really appreciated. Just like when I polish my tools, I only wish people could feel them to really appreciate them! Thanks very much!!!!
Understand. Its always disappointing to see the way some handle their tools. My tools gave my family a very nice home and life and education. I enjoy your high standards. Glad to see people still around who appreciate tools and their history that made this country great. Thanks again . Super stuff.
You're so right, it drives me crazy when I see someone hammering with a wrench or chiseling with a screwdriver or tools that are squeaky from lack of oil... I have to bite my lip! lol
Hello Tommy! I agree! It's almost like the Dietz Hi-Lo lantern! It just has nice lines to it and the red globe seems to set it off! I paid $15 dollars for it at a tractor show and put about $80 worth of elbow grease into it! lol Thanks very much!!!!!
Awesome video U said you've been collecting dietz lanterns for a while, recently purchased one and trying to date it accurately has been a little hard mainly because the vintage articles on line show variants for car home etc but for mine has slide over top glass guard square tubular and cannot find another example the same ...however seen on vintage advertising from 1897 one similar with no guard..i only see on other models had guard that cross over one another Appreciate any input u have on my Dietz victor lantern .. Awesome rescue on your vintage lantern red glass looks awesome to
Hello Jusb! It's amazing to me how like you said these lanterns can remain fully functional for generations! What other items can we say that about? Not many! Thanks very much!!!
Hello Carbide Jones! I thought at first it was a Hi-Lo but then saw the Royal stamping... I really like this lantern, paid $15- and about $80 labor! Lol. Thanks very much!!!
How did you remove the globe? I'm embarrassed to say how long I've been trying to remove the globe from my Dietz loc nob hy-lo hot blast lantern... not sure if it is the same but it looks very similar. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Hello Tiny Island Maine! There’s something compelling about kerosene lanterns... The simplicity, the warmth of the light, very relaxing! As you know they were very popular with the railroads! Thanks very much!!! 😃👍
That looks fantastic. I just got a 1926 dietz vesta railroad lantern that's been in the family, it's in great condition other than surface rust. My question is does it hurt the value restoring these lanterns? Thanks
Hi- I must have about 50 lanterns and the ones to look for are always the ones in great original condition, however if the lantern is rusty to begin with you have nothing to lose as rusty lanterns aren't worth anything unless they are a rare or unusual model. Just a point- The prices of lanterns, like many antiques are dropping fast as the new generation wants nothing to do with old stuff! =) Young people don't collect... =)
Awesome job on the restoration. Some advice please: the lantern I am working on has been in vinegar for a few days, most rust now removed. Strange yellowing as you showed occurring, what grade of steel wool did you use please? Wire brush scratching, any thoughts on prevention/correcting? Appreciate your thoughts.
new subscriber. enjoying the vids very much. I have a dietz number 0 defiance that was my grandfathers. you inspired me to finally attempt to restore it. is there general listings of tool flea markets on line ? looking for antique Froes...
Hello Wyatt! This lantern was really a rusty mess to start! I've done a couple of lanterns before but this one is about 100 years old! Thanks very much!!
Unlike the outside the inside looked very clean! I guess because the kerosene acted as a coating. Even though when soaking I left the cap off and soaked inside the tank also- I had to or the lantern would float! lol I've already had lanterns that were grungy inside the tank and used three foot section of sash cord chain to remove the rust... I was surprised, both the wick and inside were clean! Thanks very much!
Hello David! I have some older advertisements for these lanterns and they came Clear and "Ruby" I can only assume that the Red lanterns were sold mainly for traffic or road use and RailRoad use.. I have a bunch of lanterns with the Red globe, they are warm looking and attractive but I don't see much use for them to the average person! They also had some nifty Cobalt Blue ones! Thanks!!!!!!
Hello John, Many times the Red lanterns were used by municipalities as barricade lamps, also they were widely used by railroads as signaling devices! Thanks very much! 😃👍
Hello Chris! Honestly any clear coat would work well, lacquer, acrylic... the reason I went with shellac is because the alcohol in the shellac reacts with the tin of the lantern and gives it an instant "patina" (the good type) a slightly darker rich finish that looks very natural and unrestored! If you notice the lantern was slightly brighter before the shellac. It looks just awesome now.. Really love shellac! lol Thanks very much!!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter I recently found a dietz monarch oil lamp in an old work shed. I’m going to attempt to restore it as it’s very rusty. How do I remove the glass?

Howdy! Nice Royal! Just a question here, did you replace the red globe or, did you clean it up? I've experienced the exterior of some of my Dietz Fitzall globes crazing or cracking on the exterior. Is there a way to deal with that? Nice restoration!
Very nice job. One warning though. If you soak a lantern in vinegar, make sure the entire lantern is submerged, and do not forget about it. I forgot about a very rare lantern I left in vinegar when I went on vacation. Right where the vinegar and air made contact with the lantern, it completely dissolved the metal, and ruined this lantern. It looked like it was cut in half with a torch. This was a very costly and stupid mistake.
I got One of these thats a city of millwaukii impicmed up at a flea market. Ita yellow. Im gonna redo that lantern but im gonna totally custom the paint on it tho. I twnd to custom paint all my lanterns i restore tho.
LMAO! To be honest David we have a group of awesome subscribers that have been really helpful and encouraging... Really great people as you can see by the comments! I never heard of using Lye and Vinegar! Sounds harsh! =) There are at least 20 ways to remove rust from metal including EvapOrust, Navel Jelly, Muriatic Acid, Washing Soda and Electrolysis... Everybody has a preference of their own... Best bet is to look at someone's restoration and see how it looks and how it would work for you!
Nice restoration. Beautiful. Red color was the color for the railroad workers. Thank You
Great video, thanks for narrating too. Nice results. I have Dietz D -Lite that’s rusted pretty bad - time to bring back to life. Thanks
