Too many people in this country seem to want to foist the responsibility upon the schools.
I disagree with you heavily. Children need an outside source for morals outside of their parents. What if their parents are KKK? N**is? Homophobes? Brad, the argument non understander has called in to chat… Armin was literally saying that basing morality on what god says is the problem because he *could* say ANYTHING IS MORAL because god says it is. A god could just say “ok, now it’s Opposite Day” and you just have to go with it *because* he says so. You’re doing no work to decide for yourself, and that’s the problem.
29:48 That's actually an interesting discussion : When Armin says : "it looks at the outcomes in order to maximize well-being" The follow-up question then becomes : why do you care about (individual) well-being ? In a sense, utilitarianism seeks to maximize some utility, but there is somewhere a prior valuing of what the utility is. So it can be compassionate if what you value is well-being ( compassion being important there) , but it could also be misaligned. Ultimately, I think there's an interplay between a reason based deontology and utilitarianism, both informing each other and building as complex layers upon one another.

Thanks so much!
29:48 That's actually an interesting discussion :
When Armin says : "it looks at the outcomes in order to maximize well-being"
The follow-up question then becomes : why do you care about (individual) well-being ?
In a sense, utilitarianism seeks to maximize some utility, but there is somewhere a prior valuing of what the utility is.
So it can be compassionate if what you value is well-being ( compassion being important there) , but it could also be misaligned.
Ultimately, I think there's an interplay between a reason based deontology and utilitarianism, both informing each other and building as complex layers upon one another.
A perfect version of good cop/bad cop.
