Best Warren Buffett speech

  • Bear with me as I share a bit of my history that helped me create SkyVu and the Battle Bears games. The University of Nebraska gave me my first job after college. I mostly pushed TV carts around, edited videos for professors or the occasional speaker event. One day, Warren Buffet came to campus to speak to the College of Business. I didn't think much of this speech at the time but I saved it for some reason. 15 years later, as a founder of my own company, I watch and listen to this particular speech every year to remind myself of the fundamentals and values Mr. Buffett looks for. He's addressing business students at his alma mater, so I think his style here is a bit more 'close to home' than in his other speeches. Hopefully many of you find great value in this video like I have. Sorry for the VHS flickering line on the right side.
    Here are my take aways:
Accounting is the language of business.
For founders, nothing can beat painting your own painting.
Apply the "Newspaper Test" to all your decisions.
Know and take care of your Durable Competitive Advantage.
Choose your heroes carefully because you will become them.
You are your children's natural hero, embrace that role.

Hey BB fans, sorry for the slightly off-topic video but I wanted to put this old video up for me and anyone who might be interested. Our studio is pretty close to Mr. Buffett's house and he's been an inspiration for me and other folks from Omaha. The old furniture lady named Mrs. B he talks about at 53:44 was the first entrepreneur I met when I was a little kid. I was more interested in getting a ride on her electric wheelchair but watching my Dad try to bargain with her was a big early lesson in business. So the dots all connect in a strange way over time. Will get back to posting more BB videos now.

Brilliant incites based on experience and I agree. Learn accounting and ratio analysis of balance sheets and Income statements. Study the full spectrum of an industry, it's profitable and unprofitable businesses so you can spot them at a glance. Read financial shenanigans a great book to spot bad businesses. Have integrity and be someone else's hero. Jump out of bed every morning raring to go to work and never stop working even at 102. Haha. Great advice. Thanks for sharing.

If AOC or Bernie Sanders or any number of more so Democratic/liberal politicians merely suggest a better distribution of the wealth the right reams them mercilessly. Labels them as socialists & dangerous. Yet if Warren Buffett touches on this subject & simply states that we need to work on better distribution of wealth within the capitalist system the right/conservatives ignore him. This is a idea that Warren Buffett has touched on--and quite explicitly--in several speeches/statements.

"Work for a boss you can't stand & work around people that make your stomach churn." I could describe it in much worse terms but yep---can absolutely relate. Looking back in every case my efforts should have went towards getting out of those environments instead of the ultimately maladaptive strategies/efforts/energies towards "making the best of it, being a good soldier, going along to get along"...to name just a few of my maladaptations.

Freedom WatchDog - “The Intelligent Investor.” It was written by Buffett’s teacher at Columbia Benjamin Graham. Buy the version with the commentary by Jason Zewig (I may be misspelling his name). Chapter 8 & 20 are the most important. Chapter 8 is about Mr. Market (the Stock Market), Chapter 20 is about the Margin-of-Safety principle.

Its so funny how some of these people in the audience keeps asking him silly existential questions like: how do you keep your legacy when you die? or How do you apply your investment principles in your own life. It almost completely catches Warren off-guard, because when you have a great company to run and a lot of people depending on you you just dont have time to ask silly questions like that.
