I live in Hawaii myself and my dad and mom said that they saw him performing at his dad’s shop in Waikiki a few times :) He’s half Philipino and half Puerto Rican. Bruno's maternal grandparents immigrated from the Philippines (the native people are considered Asian/Pacific Islanders), which at one time was a colony of Spain, and some of its people have some Spanish heritage. His paternal grandfather came from Puerto Rico where Indian, Spanish, and African races came together. His paternal grandmother immigrated from Eastern Europe (Ukraine/Hungary region) and had Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. (23andMe -- Most people with Ashkenazi ancestry trace their DNA to Eastern and Central Europe, but also have Middle Eastern ancestry.) Blame Bruno's father for his nickname. He started calling him Bruno when he first started walking because he said Bruno reminded him of the professional wrestler, Bruno Sammartino. All his family has called him Bruno since then. It was only at school that he went by Peter. The Mars came after Bruno moved to LA to pursue a singing career. Record executives had a hard time trying to decide how to market him. Should they target pop, easy listening, urban, or contemporary radio? Because his last name was Hernandez some suggested the Latin market and encouraged him to sing in Spanish even though he didn't speak Spanish at that time. Bruno's solution was to go by Bruno Mars instead to prevent pre-conceived ideas of who and what he was.

What many don't understand is both Puerto Rican and Filipino have a Black ancestry in parts of both countries. In Puerto Rico they call it Negritas. It'd be no surprise to me if Bruno has some Black in his background somewhere, he's got way too much natural inner soul in that body of his. As for the era, it's 90s style LA. Cardi B is dressed very 90s Hispanic too. Jump to now with his Silk Sonic's LTDO, his mustache is back, but now he's channeling 70s Motown and he does the vibe just as fine as anything else he takes on. He's the kind of artist that comes along only in a rare minute. I'm not a fan of Cardi B, but I love how much fun she's having with Bruno and you can tell they are really good friends. That's it.
