  • “This is one I’ll want to be remembered by,” Ryan told critic Charles Champlin on the set of THE ICEMAN COMETH (1973). As the disillusioned anarchist Larry Slade, drinking himself to death in a Lower Manhattan saloon, he’s approached by young Don Parritt (Jeff Bridges), whose mother-Larry’s former lover-has just been arrested for a bombing plot. (Playwright Eugene O’Neill based the character on Donald Vose, who ratted out his own mother and her fellow conspirators after an attack on the Los Angeles Times building in 1910).

I’m used to seeing my dad in movies when he was younger and healthier, but this always chokes me up because he looks exactly the way he looked the last time I saw him. Thanks for posting this.

Your dad is one of my all-time favorites, and his work for social/racial justice and his involvement in the Civil Rights movement makes him even more of a legend. He was a great man indeed.

Ryan was actually dying and knew it when he did this his last role. He later died of lung cancer a year after his wife had died also from cancer. A seriously under rated actor.

      Robert Ryan, underrated? By whom?

It’s such gift to us that Ryan provided this searing performance as Larry Slade before his passing in 1973. Perhaps, his finest screen performance.

Robert Ryan was a treasure. Thank God he got to do this role. No disrespect to Mr. Marvin but if only Robards had kept his drinking under control and had played Hickey in this film! So many wonderful actors in this entire movie!

I think you're right. Marvin wasn't right casting as Hickey, too introverted - and no disrespect to Marvin, who was a great actor - I've always thought if you could transplant Robards into this production you'd have an astonishing Iceman. This version is best for what surrounds Hickey, the other one has the best Hickey. Both worth watching though. And what a play...!

I just watched it again and Robert Ryan is incredible as is most of the cast, and for a young man Jeff Bridges does really. Lee Marvin just doesn’t do it for me. Interesting how such an important character as Hickey in the story has such a small part.

Robert Ryan was the best Larry Slade ever. A young Jeff Bridges held his own in a wonderful cast. This might be the best American play ever written.

Where’s Bob Ryan’s Oscar!!! Bridge’s too! Easily could have shared it for this scene alone. Both are masterful.

The two best Hickey's were Robards & Spacey. I have a recording of Robards, I would pay a significant amount to see a copy of Spacey's performance from 1998. I don't live in NY, if I did I could go to the library to see it.
