Tonya, I started with Classic size when I began with Franklin Quest many years ago. I haven't had the need to size up to Monarch or down to Compact. My sister did up size to the Monarch when she was managing 3 children's schedules, 2 job schedules, and keeping track of livestock and agricultural pruduction. Now as an empty nester, she is opting for the Classic that she started with many years ago. I agree that there are many more accessories for the Classic size both in Franklin Covey and DAYTIMER brand. I have never needed more than 1 planner, that's what the tabs are for in my opinion. I took the planner seminar, courtesy of my employer, they emphasized only using 1 planner for ALL your needs, I find that keeping professional & personal info as well as Dr. Appointments for my parents is extremely manageable. I drank the Kool-aid. When I use my Franklin absolutely NOTHING slips through the cracks.
LA CHESS Hey! I was taught too to only use one planner. I don’t know what I was thinking when I tried to use two...but then again that works for some people. The classic size is the perfect in between size. It’s not too big and not too small.
Thanks for doing this Tonya. I actually bought the compact size around Christmas and promptly returned it because I just couldn't see anything lol I'm pushing 50 and just can't do the smaller ones anymore. I'm going to have to sell all my personal planners and move up to this size but I'm excited to be able to see again lol
Since I have to keep my work stuff separate from personal, the Compact size is perfect for me. I love it in my black strip Planner Love binder with the Blooms inserts. The system is awesome with its proven years of use. I do wish more of the binders were in Compact size, and some of the inserts bundles. Keep pushing these videos. They are awesome!
I just bought my first Franklin planner, and decided on the classic size. I chose the Holly, zipped planner and the traditional planner pages. I'm very excited to receive it!
I found your channel a few days ago and I love, love, love it! Thank you for this video. It is helpful to know that even experienced planners sometimes have to change their system when it stops working.
One thing I like about the Classic size is that you can fold the letter size paper and punch holes in it and it will fit perfectly in the planner. If you copy a full size sheet of paper to 64% of the original page you will have the same size as half a sheet of letter size paper. Franklin used to have serrated paper to do that without using scissors, but that was along time ago.
Thanks, Tonya. I went through the course online yesterday. I'm back into the FP method and I learned some things I didn't know about Benjamin Franklin. I too am on a Ben Franklin "kick"! I actually grew up near Franklin,MA. Town name after him
Another great video! I know this was 4 years ago but golden advice is timeless. I decided to switch back to Classic size for the reasons you mentioned. Anna leather onyx classic size on the way! 🤩.. I know more anecdotal but I was vacillating between my travelers notebook and Hobinichi. I realized Franklin Covey is better for my day to day planning and flexibility of planner inserts. will use my travelers notebook for just that, on my travels to journal and memorabilia. Thanks again Tonya! 😊
Very helpful as always. I recently placed an order for the Classic size (upgrading from Compact) and yes, it can get expensive with a new binder and new inserts.
As humans, aren't we funny? Our likes and dislikes? I have never tried the HPOV planner, because i can't stand the illustrations. I usually go for Blooms or Seasons, or Monticello, at a push. I tried the Wanderlust inserts one year, and promptly bought the Blooms, because I just couldn't stand the Wanderlust! They're so...dreary!! I'm in a custom VDS, in a compact size, but I've just bought the classic size Beautiful Life pages, because I fancied a change of size. The beautiful life pages have a very different layout to most FC inserts. Both sizes have advantages and disadvantages. I honestly thought that switching sizes this year was the first time I'd done it, but I've just archived all of my inserts since 2016, and i seem to do it every year! Oh well. As you say, Tonya, it's an investment in ourselves.
Hi Carol hello! Great summary. I've never tried the Wanderlust but people like it because there are no times in the appointment schedule. I too switch back and forth between the classic and compact size. Thanks for leaving a comment, my friend.
This was really helpful. I've been in the compact size forever but lately, I've found that it felt cramped to write, mostly because of my eyesight but also because my hands get tired more quickly. I think it's time for me to move to a larger size. Thanks for sharing.
Tonya, I LOVE this video and it is just what I needed to hear, along with others’ comments of agreement on the same. I am currently fighting the need and notion of returning to classic size (and, yes, my beloved Ryder binder!). I was trying to make room for the other things I carry to work as I work downtown and that involves parking and walking from distances away from where I work. I know it’s inevitable and I will be returning and likely staying in classic for ALL of the reasons you have stated. It’s bittersweet but a must now. Thanks for making me see clearly what I have to do.
I’ve done a recent Planner size switch myself, starting this year (2020), switching from the “Monarch” (used 2017-2019) to “Classic,” size. (this year 2020) with help from a mini 4x magnifier. (not the magnifying pagefinder, which I hope Franklin Quest/Covey/Planner brngs back for all binder sizes, (Esp. “Classic” and “Monarch”)! I owned/used the “Monarch,” “Original” Daily Planning Pages with the Monarch Planner with the Side Suicase handles, WITHOUT magnification assistance, due to Visual-impairment (Glaucoma with Cataract side effects, which took out vision in my left eye at birth, and I had the real left eye removed due to pain after I graduated High School in 2002, (Eye removal Surgery was in Fall 2003), Vision in Right eye fluctuates from 20/40 to 20/120, (basically I’ve mostly have just never been able to drive a Motor Vehicle, with exception of go-kart and manual bicycle, during my adult life). Anyway, I switched from “Monarch” (used 2017-2019), to the “Classic-Size” (2020), with a mini 4x magnifier from a childern’s fingerprint kit, inside the planner. “I’m currently using an FC Basics Black “Classic” Binder, with “2 Pg. /Day” “Leadership” style Pages. I also switched due to the “More form options available,”for “Classic,” reason you mentioned in your video, and because “Monarch” even wirh the Handles on the side of the Planner Binder, was too big to carry everywhere with me and my canvas Tote. (which I also keep a foldable, red & White, Aluminum cane, for blind prople, with me, for mostly night travel. Anyway, Tonya, I love your Franklin Planning videos very much (huge fan!), Thanks a lot! I’ve also considered putting both “2- Pg. /Day” and “Weekly” Pages in my one binder, for 2-months each, but I ran out of room, I’m glad you were able to make it wotk for you!
Hello my friend. I would love to try the Monarch one day as there would be soooo much room! Is it a hassle to have to use a magnifier with the classic size? Thank you so much for watching! I hope you are staying safe with all of this coronavirus stuff going on.
Hello my friend Tonya & Thanks for Replying! Yes, it is a little bit hectic to have to use/keep a mini magnifier with my Classic Planner, but it does fit into one of the “credit card pockets,” in the front, which is a little better. I’d prefer for Franklin Quest/Covey/Planner, to bring back the Magnifying Pagefinder. The Monarch Planner size, being as huge as it is, which is roomier, is just a pain to carry around everywhere, even with the Black Binder with the “Briefcase Handles” coming out of the side! I’ve known about Franklin Quest/Covey/Planner products since I was in Middle School, (my dad used them to organize himself & his schedule), and he’d let me look at the catalog, when I was a youth, pre-teen and Teenager, (about 1994 to 2001-ish). Thanks again for your videos, ❤️ I’ve recently Purchased the “ Every Day Stickers,” you’ve mentioned in another youtube video, which I’m going to try them out and see if they work for me or not, when I get them.
@@johnvjohnson3 Hey John I remember those magnifiers Franklin used to sell and they were great. I even had the little credit card size calculator they sold as well for those just in case times like they talked about in one of their stores when the power went out all they had to do sales with was one of those little solar powered calculators and the customers loved it and bought them out.
Hello Tonya. I just wanted to say I love your channel. You do such a great job, well organized and obviously have things thought out. So, would you say you prefer the original larger planner so that it’s kept professional in look and no distractions?
I’ve done stuff like that; having separate planners. I realized quickly that it was too cumbersome and made it harder for me to want to document consistently. Now I only have one and a small night time journal.
Thanks, Tonya, for this Video. While the Compact size is more Portable, the Classic size gives you more space to write/jot down more detailed information. I guess it boils down to what your individual needs are, & what is important to you. For myself the Classic size is the best fit. The Compact is small & doesn't have enough space to jot down everything, the Monarch size is too big & NOT portable at all. The Classic is right in Between these 2.
Great video Tonya! I love the Planner Love binders but the rings are too small for me. I wish the compact rings were bigger. I use a FC Classic Grace binder for household tracking and a FC Compact Aurora binder for business/on the go with the Monticello daily day on 2 pages calendar. I have a lot of files I have to carry with me for work and my briefcase is small. I like your idea about the tote bag, I will have to try it for work. If I could make the Classic work for on the go/business, I totally would. Thank you for all your informative videos! 😃
Hi Tonya! Another great video with lots of information for us. I switched from the Classic to Compact this January. It took a while to get used to but it is easier for me to carry in my computer bag. For me, >60yrs old, it was a good switch. I still have a lovely classic sized leather planner, sitting on the shelf. My question to you - do you have suggestions on what to use that other binder for? Have you or anyone else done something with the older binder (that is still too cute!). Thanks again, Tonya!
Hi Stefanie. Sorry for the delayed response. I don't know how I missed your comment. I use old binders to store old planner pages or sometimes I sell old binders on ebay.
I would like to know what made you end up going back to the classic size binder after leaving your original brown unstructure classic size to go into compact because you said it was bothering your back & shoulder when carrying in your bag. How isn't lighter now the classic? Have you put less in it or what Im Curious because I had a classic originality and switched to the compact and am thinking about going back but Im Not sure I want to only put partial inserts I my planner. Is your classic alot more lighter then the one from before you had etc.
Hi. There is just a few ounces of difference between the classic and compact size. The most important thing a person should consider is the footprint/size of the planner since the weight is just about the same. The classic can weigh less if you don't put many pages in it. For example, some people want their planner to fit in their purse so a compact may be better. I use a tote bag so either size will work for me but I now prefer the classic size. I like the extra room. Now that I'm working from home because of the pandeminc, I just love the classic size and I fill her up because I don't have to tote it many places.
I thought it was funny that I had found this video at this time of year, since I am wondering about compact vs classic. I have both but which do I order for the next year?? What is funny is that I have watched this before and liked it! and here I am again watching it :-)
Very helpful. I've had my Classic Mia binder for 10 years; I went from the Pocket to the Classic. Now that I have less to do and need less space, I'm in a Copmpact Mia binder, It has 1.5" rings, and I love it. Found it online brand new, never used. I'm thinking I'll stay in that for a while. It’s cool that you have 1.5” rings in a compact binder. 1.5 inch rings are my favorite. That way I don’t have to make hard decisions about what to exclude from my binder.
Tonya, what are your thoughts about a day on two pages vs a week on two pages? I use the week on two pages but I love the space on the day on two pages. I wonder how many days o. Two pages can/will fit in the classic binder? Any ideas you can share?
Hi Lynn! In my classic planner with 1.5 inch rings I carry 4-5 months of daily (day on 2 pages) but to do that I do not carry many tab dividers, pocket dividers, forms etc. I rather have the planner pages in my binder. I hope this helps!

this is a great video, and yes looking at old ones , I think I am going compact, big reason why --- I stole my partners compact = TIFFANY by Toyna Plans, I love her products
I also changed for a personal Filofax back to my FC classic for ALL the same reasons; especially the eyesight issue, at 65 I need to see where I'm writing. One thing I don't like about some FC forms is those light lines they use ! Why don't they just use black and white?1?
God bless y’all who can use two planners at the same time I could not do that. I have An online business and I can only use one planner for my personal as well as my business I don’t have time to look into my personal if I have a business thing to do or look in my business planner to see if I have something personal going on that day. So it’s only one planner for me and I to use the classic

I have An online business and I can only use one planner for my personal as well as my business I don’t have time to look into my personal if I have a business thing to do or look in my business planner to see if I have something personal going on that day. So it’s only one planner for me and I to use the classic
I agree! It's easier to have everything in one planner.
I'm so confused now..... I'm thinking of using two planners
Linda Belardes Hey Linda! Do what works for you! 😊
