My understanding of the Lokas is the following:
The Lokas are actually descriptions of the state of a jivatma's body's mind (pains / pleasures) when the body dies. These pains (negative emotions like anger, regret, anxiety, sadness etc.) or pleasures (positive emotions such as happiness, satisfaction) are, of course, a consequences of one's past actions (sanchita karma). These emotions leave an imprint / tendencies on the jivatma. These tendencies (wasanas) are nothing but the building blocks of a jeevatma's body's personality (karana sharira) in its next birth.
One of the primary hypothesis of the Sanatan philosophy is that the jivatma never dies and takes body after body and lives lifetime after lifetime in the material universe through the jivas (bodies). So, to fill the gap between one lifetime to the next, a residence for the jivatma is postulated in one of the lokas which are just metaphysical realms.
The prarabhda karma (those past actions who consequences are to fructify in the next birth) of the jivatma determine what sort of body (can be animal or human) it takes up next. The pains or pleasures experienced by this next body are determined not only by the actions of this body but also by the prarabhda karma of the jivatma. Please note that prarabhda karma is a subset of sanchita karma (also known as the proverbial "paap kaa ghada").
The Lokas from the highest to the lowest states of mind are described below:
    1. Satya Loka means the state of pure consciousness, meaning a jivatma (a person) loses the ego of thinking he / she is different from the Brahman (all pervading consciousness, life force). He realizes that he is not the body, he is not defined by how much money he has or what is his status in society and he realizes that his happiness lies not in material things because all that is just maya (illusion). He is in fact a part of this all pervading life force that pervades through the entire universe. So, he already has everything. One may call Brahman as God. So, he is in fact God, because God is all and all is God. A jivatma is said to be in Satya Loka on attaining Moksha. This is the highest Loka.
    2. Tapar Loka: This is the state of mind wherein a jivatma no longer cares about material things and is highly spiritual.
    3. Jan Loka: This is the state of mind in which a jivatma is creative and has developed the understanding that material things are worthless. Since creativity is an intrinsic quality, it brings joy to create new things. But, understanding that material things can only bring temporary happiness, one does not fall in love with those creations.
    4. Mahar Loka: This is the state of mind wherein one is filled with love, compassion, empathy and forgiveness.
    5. Swarga Loka: This is the state of mind wherein one does good work without worrying about the results.
    6. Bhuvar Loka: This is the state of mind wherein one does good work with the desires for good results. Modes of passion exist.
    7. Bhur Loka: This is the basic state of a person's mind. This is the state of mind wherein one is in the mode of passion, meaning one is attracted to other people and things and derives thrill and short term pleasures. He wants to enjoy sense gratification. For sense gratification, a man in the mode of passion wants some honor in society, or in the nation, and he wants to have a happy family, with nice children, wife, and house.
    8. Atala Loka: A state of mind with lustful feelings.
    9. Vitala Loka: A state of mind with lustful feelings and desires for riches, like money and other precious things.
10 - 13. Sutala Loka, Talatala Loka, Mahatala Loka, Rasatala Loka: As one gets progressively morally depraved, one goes down the Lokas.
    14. Paataal Loka: The state of mind of the worst of creatures such as rapists, murderers etc.
These Lokas are also explained as all kinds of stories wherein Swarg Loka is from 1 to 5, Martya Loka is 6 and 7 and Paataal Loka is from 8 to 14. Yamraj / Kaal (God of Death) is supposed to live in the Paataal Loka. The jivatmas with more positive and less negative imprints go to the Swarg Loka and those the other way around go to the Paataal Loka. Those with a balanced positive and negative imprints go to the Martya Loka.
These Lokas also have an alternative meaning in planetary system terms in other schools of Sanatan philosophy.

@@akbaxb165 The ancient Sanatan scriptures talk about multiverses. Astrophysicists are still working on this issue with no definitive answer yet though postulations have been made. But if indeed maya (everthing other than Brahman) and Brahman (the source of all forces in the universe including life force) are perpetual in nature, constant births and deaths of verses is inevitable since we already know that our universe was born from big bang. So, we just have to wait for scientists to find definitive answers.

    • @vikramsoondur6891

This is not the traditional understanding of the lokas and no one whose worldview is rooted in shAstra will endorse this unnecessary indulgence in pointless speculation. Regarding your position expressed in the other comment about waiting for scientists to find definitive answers, this is ignorance and cluelessness of the highest order. Material energy is both gross and subtle, and for anyone to come up with something as nonsensical as this, there is clearly no good grasp of foundational precepts of the Dharmic conception of reality. Why don't you wait for scientists for prove the existence of God and of the AtmA in order to believe in those concepts as well, in that case? Your post simply makes little sense. That's it.

What I Love About Sanathana Dharma Is That
As Other Religions, Sanathana Dharma Also Believes In Heaven And Hell.
    But There All Religions Stop.
Where As Sanathana Dharma Also Tells, More Than Heaven And Hell, Our Focus Should Be On MOKSHA.
Because Even In Heaven Or Hell, Our Soul Is Still Away From Our Creator,
But Once One Attains MOKSHA, Than That One Will Merge With Our Creator For Ever.

@@AmiraAroraOfficial It is not possible for everyone to get the Moksha not even statistically speaking. In the strictly and hard core Advait Vedanta view, no creature ever existed and none will (other way, it means you were never bounded so that you need Moksha to be freed.). It is just the play of maya (illusion) like movie being played on the screen. The movie will begin and finish but screen was there and will be there forever. Re. reincarnation: The reason you don't remember past memories is because you wouldn't be able to live this life had you remember the past lives consciously. Nature (Ishwara - Consciousness (nirmgun baramha) + Maya= Sagun baramha) is a great designer or I would say movie maker. You need to dwell into subconscious mind in order to access them (this is my interpretation) and there are accounts of yogis/monks who had accessed them. Hope it helps.

We do live only once. I did think about it very deeply to come to this conclusion. I think swamiji is entirely wrong here. Even if we are conciousness. It would not matter after we leave this body because we don't know if we will be born again. If we are born again the kind of life we live on that plane of existence and in that time will be entirely diffefrom how we are living in todays time. Life and our personality changes from time to time and according to that era so definitely we would not be the same person. We will forget about what happened with us in the past. So whats the point? Only thing which is in our hands in now and we do need fo live it fully. So I have to disagree with swamiji here.

I respectfully disagree with you. First, why do we need a religion? If you like to find what the truth of life is, why do you need to wait for the next life? How do you know that there is next life for a fact? Right now, we live on this earth. That is a fact and we all can experience it. How do we experience the world? Through our senses. So, our experience of the world is a sensual experience. Based on sensual experiences, we assume "I" exists. Does it? Who is "I"? It is nothing but our sensual experience s. But, we want that "collection of experiences" to be mine. That is our identity. Me, mine, ours, etc are borne out of an illusion of assumption of existance of "me", which is nothing but accumulation of sensory experiencea. Even with a bit of alteration of neurons our brain due to diseases or injury, our identity can be altered. Our memories can be permanently erased. That is a fact! If we accept that simple and obvious fact, how can we say when all our brain activites cease to exist at death, "I" or ""me" will continue? Without getting upset, please think as a reasonable human beings. The other point is, compassion, empathy, love, care, etc have no religious labels. They are pure human qualities we have developed through out our human history. They are essential components of own mental health and helpful for the existence of harmonious society. I meditate all the time. It is not to have a better life when I pass away, but it calms my mind and help mecfunction efficiently. Being aware of my activites, thoughts, feelings, emotions etc, make me a fuller human being. Who cares whether I will be born again or not? I live as a good human being completely contended. Make your life heavenly now, if there is a heaven after life, great. If not, you already lived in heaven here on the earth. Thanks!

All so called Guru's and Teachers fail to explain how the intelligent species FORMED. I say FORMED because the intelligent species were initially FORMED not BORN. That cannot be denied. Your BORN only lives once but your FORM is passed on through the reproductive process. Your Form purpose, once Formed, is to survive by evolving its biological host the physical body and brain.
Reality couldn't care less about state of consciousness nor what one perceives. Consciousness is a tool that the FORM implemented as a send and receive message tool via our neurone transmission lines and consciousness is fleeting and easily lost or not required.
