Man, this animation does Dav Pilkey's work SUCH justice. The 3D final version still does as well but this has a very nostalgic flavor that gives it a teensy edge. Maybe it's the fact that it gives me Flip-O-Rama vibes.

Not a professional but from what I know, the pencil tests-while they typically go unused in the finalized 3D-are made so the animation team can get a feel for the style and movements of the characters, and use them as a basis for when they start working in 3D (or at least keep them in mind).
The same way storyboarding is used for a 2D animation. They use them to get an idea of framing the scene, blocking out character locations and keyframes. And in this case, to get detailed intricate emotion and movement without fiddling around in 3D beforehand.
See, it’s 2D animation tests like this and one I saw with Moana that companies don’t realize it would be ten times better this way. Bring back the movie 2D animation!

It took me this long to realize that Krup’s small wig is his glass like Clark Kent but only this time the secret is so while hidden not even Mr. Krup knows!
You my friend know how to animate in handrawn, THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT!! So many animators have flat designs but here I can tell you know how the chracter looks when he turns and rotates, that he that he moves with weight shifting back and forth, The pace at which he slows and speeds up, It was a simple character design in the books but you gave it that disney life to it Bravo good sir bra freaking vo
