Lots of videos on the web that tell you how to do it and then stop short of actually showing me how to do it! Thank you for the easy show and tell that actually gave me enough info to try it out on my new R7. Works great and is crazy fast compared to what I thought it was going to be. I haven't combined them in software afterward yet, but will try that next in PS. Appreciate the video and time spent demonstrating.

Thanks for this video. I've been having a hard time deciding where to step into mirrorless. I do a lot of macro so I really really wanted focus bracketing. couldn't find the answer as to which cameras have the feature besides the RP. Wanted the R5 for it's pixel count but was seriously ready to give in and sacrifice pixel count for this feature alone. Some may scoff at that reasoning but the moment you have a living, ready to buzz away at any moment subject and you want to expand depth of field with stacking, you have to do it quickly and accurately. This is the answer and I want it!

Wish the R had this, even though I have the R5 too. Miops has 2 products that could help. 1st is their slider. Takes a shot, moves the camera for a specified # of shots and step distance, pretty precise. The other is Flex, which moves the focus in the lens as opposed to moving the camera. Obviously the slider is for auto or manual focus lenses where as the Flex is only for AF lenses. Both methods are fairly slow, about 1 shot per sec. Another product that seems fast is Helicon FB tube...FB being focus bracketing. Helicon however is located in Ukraine and physical products are currently not available. 📷 My Olympus TG6 does in camera stacking and bracketing in Macro but the stacking is 10 shots max I think

The Canon R6 has this feature as well. I have the R5 and R6 and both do focus bracketing. So with the R6, you can focus bracket for less money than the R5 (albeit the R6 is only 20 mp). Nice video BTW, you saved me figuring out how to do it for macro! :0)))

Really need to know how to do the shots much slower so that flash can be used. Every other manufacturer has an option to set the interval between shots. I cannot believe that this isn’t an option in Canon cameras. Surely I just haven’t found the way to do it.

One point still preoccupies me. How do you manage that, with automatic focus set, the defined starting point does not shift when you release the shutter? To me, it then always takes another focus point to start. Thanks.

Thank you for the informative video, Stewart. I'd like to ask about your workflow for processing a stack of 100+ photos. I've done this quite a bit for smaller numbers of photos by importing the series of RAW photos into Lightroom, using the Open as Layers in Photoshop command, aligning and blending the layers, and then saving the result, which sends a TIFF file back to Lightroom to be edited. Now, admittedly, my computer needs updating, but I find that the process fails if I try to combine more than about 15 RAW files into a TIFF, presumably because the resultant file that's created--maybe more than 4 GB in size--becomes too large for my set-up to process. So, the idea of trying to process 100+ photos is mind-boggling to me, and I can't imagine what the TIFF file size would be. Could you provide some insight about this? Is it a matter of updating my computer, or is that you're actually processing/outputting different file types (e.g., JPG) that are not so processing intensive. If you are indeed using RAW and TIFF, what file size is the resultant TIFF? I'm planning to get the R5, and the Focus Bracketing looks fantastic, but I'm wondering if I'd be able to take advantage of it. Thanks.

Looks like the camera takes more images than needed... with 1x magnification on fullrame and f4 you just need 0,48mm steps - so a distance of 10mm in focus would be covered in 25 shots - nice feature to have in the camera but really cant replace a stacking rail

    • @SteveSSBB

You can set the number of images from 2 - 999. If more shots are taken then required that is the choice of the operator, not the camera.

Shame the R5 doesnt process the bracketed images internally like olympus do, but i guess micro 4:3 has smaller file sizes to deal with. Still, at the R5's price it should have the processing power to do it internally. Looks like I'm staying with the cheaper Sony R series.
