- The Palagnedra dam has a height of 72 meters and its crowning is 207 meters long. The volume of the dam body is 65,000 cubic meters. The spillway has a capacity of 2200 cubic meters per second.
The lake created by the dam, Lake Palagnedra has a maximum volume of 4.26 million cubic meters, a length of 2.2 km [1]. Its waters are exploited by the hydroelectric workshops of Maggia (OFIMA) [2].
The lake is used as a compensation basin after the "Cavergno" power station, which turbines the waters coming from the various plants through the Peccia compensation basin [3].
Sediment management
Since the first years of its commissioning, the Palagnedra basin has suffered serious sedimentation problems. This issue is handled with two main measures.
The first measure is a 1.7 km diversion tunnel, built in 1974. An intermediate barrage now derives in the tunnel all floods above 50 m3 / s and up to a maximum of 240 m3 / s.
Despite this measure, purges are still being carried out to remove the deposited sediments. A canal connecting the tributary tunnel was built to mix "clear" waters with sediment-laden waters immediately downstream of the dam [1]. This should make it possible to reduce the harmful effects of purges on the environment [4].
