  • It's your first night at the Graveyard. As caretaker you are the only one who can keep the Dead from rejoining the Living- despite how desperately they try and escape you. You must maintain the webs of magic that keep the Ancient and the Evil bound to their graves. Souls may wander in, but don't ever let them out.

    Nice twist at the end.
    About halfway through I thought, "Either we're dead and our 'guide' is helping us settle in or they're some malicious entity that is trading places with us and needs to trick us into consenting to whatever scheme they have. When the true guide showed up, it was a pleasant surprise. Maybe one of the Uninvited is playing a harmless prank or one of the former Caretakers figured they would help acclimate us to our new duties and give us a welcome tour? Or maybe instead it was simply a Respected one doing the current Caretaker a favor and being helpful? The little detail that our guide never actually mentioned touching anything and directed us to do all the physical interactions was a brilliant bit of foreshadowing and a brilliant detail.

    I enjoyed this one right through. It's another piece of excellent localized worldbuilding, and as for the story itself...I was cruising on a generous helping of apprehensive worry right up until the end...things took a sudden turn towards horror just before the credits started to roll.
    No sleep for me for the rest of the day...
    Very nicely done.

    Ohhh what a cool one! Man, I just had to stay until the end, what a ride!
    (Spoilers below, and a helluva lotta text)
    I was actually pretty spooked at the end. Well, this is a storytelling tool I've seen before, as I used to be fond of ghost stories as a kid. But _what_ is the elf lady?? After all the world-building and rules laid down... she clearly knew her stuff. And we can assume it was correct? She came from the graveyard. She was also able to walk on the blessed paths. Did she ever interact with anything physical? I'm not sure, I'd have to go back and listen. I did ponder about the title before watching: 'Graveyard shift'. I couldn't help but think it was going to be a double entendre. But then... is she one of the respected dead? Or one of the ancients? I'll have to find another audio to listen to in order to wind down, this one got me all fired up, ahhh! XD
    But I loved it!
    She actually knew we arrived early. This is some funky ghostie business! She does speak in such a way that she never really claims to be the keeper. But could the respected leave? They could pass on, but... She left with us. At first, I thought that was bad. But "The respected dead are not trapped here like the other spirits. They cannot leave the cemetery". She waited for us in there. So most likely, this was an old groundskeeper, as she did point out those are the ones among the respected that we would interact with, if any. "I believe the latest respected resident arrived two years ago". Could be her. She was also kind of in a hurry to do the tour, implying she was bound by time. Spreading out would weaken the holy protection. In a sense, it seems like the subliminal message she sent us throughout the tour was that she was doing this for us _now,_ but it's quite taxing, and her energy is best used to guard the mausoleums. Man, what a story! Though, I wonder if the old groundskeeper had a hand in the mix-up. Curious.

      Love reading all your thoughts! I'm glad you liked it so much!

    • @pip4700
      @pip4700 6 месяцев назад +2

      I was also thinking the groundskeeper was one of the respected dead, but the rule with none of the spirits residing within the cemetery being allowed to leave it has me scratching my head. Mostly because she showed the listener around the shack where they reside, with all the maps and stuff? Unless that is also in the cemetery, but at the end when she escorts us out we’re lead out of the cemetery. Kind of adds to the mystery

    • @goatsfluff
      @goatsfluff 5 месяцев назад +2

      @pip4700 Hmmm. This is true. We kind of have to take what she said at face value, her being the only source of information about this stuff. But we can poke around!
      "Technically speaking, 'graveyard' refers the entire area affected by the magic here. About 20 miles in every direction". The cemetery is the epicenter of the magic. Some keepers refer to it as 'the graveyard', but official documents separate between where the gravestones are and the entire area. Perhaps she can reach that far. Or maybe she doesn't need to, since the grounds house is close to the main gate.
      She can't be a malicious spirit or one possessing dark magic, according to her own words; she would be unable to cross the barrier of the respected dead. She does say the respected dead cannot leave the cemetery. I figured she said 'graveyard', but nope. Of course, the two words are often used interchangeably, and the sources I find disagree about what the two mean. So the question is whether the cemetery includes the grounds house. She didn't meet us at the docks, possibly because she couldn't. But she knew so much, she had to have been a groundskeeper before. And she spoke as though she had been _there_ before. I agree that there's something fishy, not in the writing, but her presence and existence is an anomaly. The groundskeeper said the elf "took us into the cemetery", which makes it more mysterious. We're scratching our heads on this one! But it's kinda cool!
      At the end of the day, it's hard to tell whether we're searching at the edges of the world the patrons created or whether we're just overanalyzing. But it's fun to speculate, and to try and put pieces together!

    • @pip4700
      @pip4700 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@goatsfluffIt’s fun to overanalyze this kinda stuff regardless! I didn’t think to look up whether or not the house could be considered part of the cemetery itself, though I figured it wasn’t since the character herself says we’re being lead out of the cemetery as we make it back to the shack. I choose to interpret it that way cause it’s more interesting to me personally. But yeah! Whatever the case it’s fun to imagine what the rest of the world is like within this short story, and who or what exactly this elf guide is

    • @AlternateAurora
      @AlternateAurora  6 месяцев назад +3

      The end section is more for the ambience. I got a lot requests about those so I extend them. I do think its better than it coming to an abrupt end especially if you fall asleep.
      So it just seemed like a good place to put the credits screen. If there are enough complaints about it I’ll switch to a fade-to-black. But most people are listening without looking at the screen so I don’t think it’s a big deal rn
