Hi! So when you talked about wanting to read more translated ficton I felt the need to represent my country and recommend you a classic that I had to read for school last year! It's called "The Maias" by Eça de Queirós, and it's about a very wealthy family (The Maias), and it follows 3 generations, the focus being the 3rd one, with Carlos. Its a satirical book about the hypocrisies of the 19th century, so it has a comical side to it :) Its a very talked about romance in my country!
I think it's fascinating that you're working to become a cover designer! They're some of the most impactful people in publishing, I have so many books I picked up simply because I loved the covers
Another Nature loving author I need to get back into is Henry David Thoreau. I read 'Walden' and 'Civil Disobedience' a few years ago, but might consider them for rereading this year. WoW! I really need to keep Powers and MacFarlane in mind. Thanks for taking about them! 😃 With Anton Chekhov I agree, the Short Stories would be a good place to start. With his plays, I loved 'The Seagull'. One author my professor and I went round and round about was John Irving. I could see he had a bit of a problem with him, but I thought his writing was incredible. For John Irving I think a good one to read would be 'A Prayer for Owen Meany'. I went through every emotion possible when I read that book. 😃

Last year I read Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi which was the perfect pandemic antidote and I've just ordered the sequel which contains more stories from the same setting (a tiny Japanese cafe, tucked away in the backstreets, where people can travel back in time) and it's absolutely beautiful and completely moving!!! Definitely up there on my list of favourite translated works of fiction! In terms of Chekhov, check out The Seagull if you haven't already! I studied it years ago at drama school and kind of resented it at the time but with hindsight, I think it's such an interesting piece of Russian drama and has some really stunning moments.
The Joy of Walking book sounds so lovely. I have strayed away from walking this past winter. I feel a need to read that book so I can refresh my body mind and soul a little. 🤓
My husband and I went to Corfu on our honeymoon. In 1 1/2 years it will be 20 years ago, and we realy want to go back. Just hope that it will be possible. I need to read that book and watch that show😊.
For translated fiction, I would like to recommend one of my favourite books of all time, Journey by Moonlight by Antal Szerb, which is a Hungarian classic from the '30s, and it is a haunting, perfect masterpiece with a beautiful language (though I have never read it in English, which I will do someday). It is about a man, who is wandering around in Umbria, Italy, and thinking about life and merging into his past and memories. Antal Szerb was a highly intellectual and intelligent author, I love to be inside his head. Love it, I think you would too :)

The Overstory was one of those transformational reads for me. The only people I know who haven't liked it are people who can't slow down and accept the pace of a tree. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Underland as well. Have you read Robin Wall Kimmerer? I might have recommended her to you before. She's someone who would be an obvious choice for anyone who loves the words of Mary Oliver and Robert McFarlane.
Swimming in the Dark is the best! I read it last year and am already wanting a reread. You should read Lie With Me by Philippe Besson translated from the French by Molly Ringwald ( the 80s actress!). It’s is about a male/male romance in France in the 1980’s.
For translated fiction I highly recommend The Eighth Life by Nino Haratischvili if you haven’t read it yet. I don’t think I’ve heard you mentioned it. But it follows multiple generations of a family in Georgia from the Russian Revolution through 2007. I just finished it last night and it’s amazing. A few trigger warnings but it’s such an incredible story.
Idk if you’ve gotten to this poem yet, but my absolute favorite Mary Oliver poem is “Don’t Hesitate.” We read it in 11th grade because my teacher LOVES Mary Oliver, and this poem specifically just stuck with me.
If you want a non-fiction book on walking, you might try Wanderlust: A History of Walking, by Rebecca Solnit. She mentions the authors you read in the blurb.
I can’t wait for you to read Vesper Flights! It was my favourite read of last year. Also, Gerald Durrell has such a beautiful writing style, My Family and Other Animals is just fantastic. I can also recommend James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small series. Those books are the coziest comfort books ever! There’s a new adaptation on PBS right now and it’s absolutely gorgeous. I don’t want to recommend too long a list but Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty is great if you enjoy nature writing.
The Wind in the Willows reminds me so much of being a child- my Dad used to read us parts of it at bedtime when I was about 6. We never finished it though, I have reread the first few chapters a few times - Maybe I need to read it again, properly. I think you will love it.

Wow Carolyn, I'm not sure I've ever seen a book haul so closely aligned with my taste! Almost every single book was either already on my tbr or is one I've read and loved 💛 Super excited to hear your thoughts on them. I would say that from what I remember, My Family and Other Animals reads quite differently to how you'd imagine from watching The Durrells (which I also ADORE). It was lovely, but very nature focused rather than comic-family focused (to be fair, how I guess you'd imagine Gerry's writing to be!) I also highly recommend Lawrence Durrell's works - I read the first of his Alexandria Quartet and although I'm not sure I understood half of it, the writing was so stunningly beautiful and poetic I still remember it in awe.

I highly recommend "the unbearable lightness of being" by Milan Kundera and "death with interruptions" by José Saramago. These books are phenomenal!
