Black Bear Pass 2022 part I

Black Bear Pass Colorado. We had seen the videos, even the infamous red jeep tumbling down the mountain, so what do a couple of Texas flatlanders do? We have to check it out for ourselves.
A rough, winding, mountain OHV trail that has spectacular views and some very steep drop offs. The trail takes off from Colorado 550 (The Million Dollar Highway) just north of Silverton and proceeds up and over Black Bear Pass and down to the town of Telluride.
The road up to the pass from the highway is nothing too technical and you could do it in most any vehicle. The Trek down to Telluride however, has some rough and off camber sections that can be a challenge.
In this video, you will see the first section from the top of the pass down through the basin along Ingrahm creek through the area called the Steps and up to Adios Curve at the beginning of the Switchback section.
Part II will cover the descent down through the switchbacks on the way to Telluride. It's not too bad, I mean a couple of flatlanders like us did it. But, you need to pay attention and concentrate on the road.
The cost of an error here, can be your life. The road in places is just barely wide enough for a vehicle with solid rock face on one side and a sheer drop off on the other.
Take it slow, use low gear and 4 wheel low range to save your brakes from overheating. You will want them in good working condition for the trip down.
