Yes, they are called “Roll Reversals”, although most people refer to them as “S turns” The reason they did that was to make sure that the shuttle would descend through the atmosphere, otherwise, the lift from the wings would pull the shuttle back up into space. It sounds crazy since the shuttle has an incredibly high wing loading, but without the S turns, it would have actually flown back up into a suborbital trajectory, throwing it way off course from the pinpoint landing.
I forgot to disable engine gimbal; the shuttle is very unstable on reentry and you can see in the bottom left I’m making lots of tiny adjustments the whole time
