People should stop thinking that Aztecs is weak against Cavalry Civs. This is a huge misconception. Eagle Warriors, from the beginning to Imperial Age are HELLA overpowered units that can deal pretty damn well against Light and Heavy Cavalry. Their lack of Cavalry is compensated entirely on these beaked guys. Eagle Warriors have fair speed, just a few lower than Light Cavalry, they deal bonus damage against Monks, Cavalry, Siege, Archers, have good pierce armor (which means more resistance to long range attacks), they have strong conversion resistance. Eagles just do everything for Aztecs, which is why most of the game you see a crowd of birds for every Aztec player. They can't deal with Paladins, but that's Late-Imperial, but with the Gold one uses to create and develop Paladins are way too risky against Aztecs because of their MONKS. You see, Heavy Cavalry has LITTLE conversion resistance, so Monks do easy work of them.
So yeah, picking Cavalry against Aztecs believing this is a counter and because they lack Halberdiers is shooting yourself on foot. But don't get me wrong, the lack of Halberdiers hurts them YES, Garland Wars Pikemen are not even close to a Halberdier (and no, it doesn't make up for it). Monks cost too much Gold too, so in order to make it up in Late-Imperial, you WILL need Relics (good thing Aztec's passive generates more Gold/faster Gold per Relic).
Ironically, the best counter to Aztecs, an Infantry Civilization that has its Unique Unit (Jaguar Warrior) to deal bonus damage against other Infantry is... Another Infantry Civilization. Yeah, that's right, Jaguar Warrior sucks against both Teutonic Knights and Samurais (both Infantry) and Eagle Warriors are countered by the literal worst unit (in pros vision): the Man-at-arms line.
Pros for some reason hate them and never do them. The only time I could watch a pro building Champions was Hera (Aztec) vs Viper (dunno what Civ). Viper managed to win by overwhelming those pesky Eagle Warriors with Longswordsman.
Eagle Warriors are a little bit off the curve, but they have to make up for the absence of many important units.
Also, Aztecs WORST nightmare: Gunpowder.
