You are amazing! I knit a lot, but have yet to try more than one color of yarn so, thank you. You have explained the process so clearly that I now feel I can venture forth. As a matter of fact, I'm excited about embarking on yet another knitting technique.
Hi ! Thank you for making this video, I'm a beginner knitter and always loved fair isle knitting, you have shown how easily a beginner can make beautiful garments. Thank you once again.
I have never worked a fair isle pattern before (I never learned how!) Because of you I'm going to try working one for myself! Thank you so much for this, you explained things in a way I understood, and in a way the books I've read could never manage. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!
You are most welcome! Thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate it that you took the time to write! I would love to see what you knit up using Fair Isle. Join us on Facebook and post photos....facebook.com/LawsOfKnitting/
I put my pattern inside a page protector and then mark my place with a dry erase marker. Wipes clean and protects the pattern for many uses. Thank you for the video!
I have never knit ANYTHING EVER ...... until now ! My hat is looking great ! No mistakes so far I'm on row 15, your pattern is fun and exciting to see the rows change. I take my time, watch your great videos. I'm still working on tension but, that will come in time :) practice, practice, practice. Watching for your video when you have the time on changing to the second same size needles . Thank you in advance for sure/much deserved!
Hi Nichole, Super sorry but I am currently out of town and not checking email too often. :( I made this video for a knit-a-long for my niece's white hat. Watch this and it should help clear things up. You will be working the crown of Alex's Fair Isle hat the same way. ruclips.net/video/24CFrmqFrgU/видео.html

well you have managed to do it again Joan. you have me interested in fair isle after watching you I am going to give it a try using the first few rows of this pattern on a hat and see what happens. thanks again Joan
I have been knitting for about 6 years now and still consider myself a beginner as I don't have a lot of time to devote to this hobby and I am almost entirely taught by RUclips. I have been very intimidated by fair isle patterns, but your tutorial has shown me that it is nothing to be afraid of! Now I am going to see if you have one one socks, as they scare me to death...LOL
Excellent tutorial. Clear, informative and you go beyond what is called for in the lesson. I appreciated the anchoring segment. I also loved how to attach the second color, easy peasy . Thank you so much.
Wwoooohoiii, thank you so much for your video! I'm knitting for several years now, but always failed on fair isle pattern. It was really frustrating, I'm not able to count how often I had to rib, only to throw my work angrily into the bin. So after seeing your video, I've took my needles, grabbed some yarn and an hour time... and... unbelievable, my result is... pretty and beautiful! Although I still will have to practice as s continental knitter, my knitting in English style, I had fun with this technique the first time! I cannot write down, how happy I'm right now in the moment! Thank you so much!
+Fea von Hairless I just poured my first cup of tea and your message was the first one of my day. Thank you so much for your kind words; you started my day off right! A newbie to multi color knitting, (haven't done any yet, but just bought a pattern), I appreciate your video, explaining clearly on how to do it. Thank you!
Thank you. I am learning Fair Isle and have done one piece. You had several good tips I will use next time. I like how your pattern is simple so anyone new can do it. :) Have a good day!!
+Sharon Keller Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate that you took the time to write to me. I do try and design patterns for the new knitter and those wanting to learn a new technique. Thanks again and enjoy Fair Isle. Joan
That was a great video! You broke down the steps so clearly that I really feel I can make this hat...I just bought the pattern. I haven’t looked at it yet, but your yarn and needles look bigger than the fingering yarn and 3mm needles that are often used. Thank you again for the video and I look forward to watching more!
Hi Deborah, Thanks for the great compliment. I am glad you found it helpful. You are right; in regards to the yarn weight and needle size...I usually go for worsted and a size 6 or 7 needle. 😃 I noticed your name on LOK Facebook. Great to see you there. Feel free to share your pictures of your projects. They don’t have to be my patterns. 🤓 Did I notice you joined the VIPs as well? Fabulous!
o.k. Joan I have done the first few rows and I am really loving this! you mentioned that if I ever decided on a pattern to let you know " If that still goes I would love to try this pattern. Linda
+Rebecca McGuire When working fair Isle in the round the pattern has to be written for that. To work a Fair Isle pattern on only one side of the hat you will need to knit the hat using straight needles. If you really want to knit the hat in the round... work the hat using the main color and then once the hat is complete use the duplicate stitch to decorate the hat with the cat. I hope this helps.
I just finished this hat thanks for the lovely pattern... my hubs loves it... the only thing I had to add another 5 row pattern cos by the time I was decreasing my hub said he wanted it a little longer... hope you don't mind...
+Cathucat 101 I'm so happy he loves it! No, no I don't mind at all. Make as many design changes as you like. I love taking a pattern and changing it up a bit. I have to add about an inch or two to every hat I knit for my hubby because he is 6'4" and has a very large head. Lol :)
love the video.. how do you carry your floats with the other color if you have a pattern your doing with a picture just on one side? i am making a hat and the cat is only on the front so the rest of the hat is done in another color. should i carry the other color completely around wrapping every few even though i won't be using that color til i get to the other side?
Wow, Tbilisi Georgia! So excited to hear from you ~ Thank you so much! I am glad you loved it ♥. If you are on Facebook I would love it if you joined our little group and shared your photos of projects. facebook.com/LawsOfKnitting/ Have a fabulous day!
Hi Joan I have been knitting fairisle ever since you showed me how and I love it! the one problem I am having is at the beginning of the round for some reason I have a space or hole showing. what am I doing wrong.?
Linda McNeely Are finding that you are adding more sts each round as well? If you are you are probably doing a Yarn Over at the beginning of your rounds. If not you are probably just need to knit the first few sts in the rounds tighter than the rest. If that’s not it take a picture and share it with me on Facebook so I can take a better look. 😊
Yes, love the pattern, just small question, as the hat gets smaller and we need to change needles, can we use the Magic Loop Method I only assume we can, any advice will be nice and thank you for your video fantastic.
@@LawsOfKnitting Thank you for answering so much! I enjoy your teaching so much I just purchased the pattern and will get busy on my very first Fair Isle I'm so excited !
I'm taking you up on your offer :). I'm knitting socks with a Fair Isle design. I just finished the cuff and I won't be using the 2nd color for approx. 25 rows. Do you recommend that I cut the 2nd color and reattach it again when needed or "capture" the 2nd color (as you explained) at the end of each row and carry it on until I need it again? Thank you.
+Love Knitting Very good question! Yes, cut the yarn. That is too many rounds to carry it up. You have a change of distorting the fabric if you carry the yarn up that many rounds.
Hi Carrie, The only reason I prefer the slip knot is because I think it keeps all my ends closer together. It has no benefit over just going straight on with your knitting. I started making the slip knot early on and just never gave it up.
Linda McNeely I have not tried that but willing to give it a try. Have you used that thing that looks like a ring and holds the two strands? It looks cool and I want to try it.
Hi Joan Luv this hat, have everything I need to try to make it. I'm new to knitting (long time crocheter) I don't know why I need 2 needles the same size. Can you please explain or make a video? Your tutorials are so nice! Thank you for your time for all of us out here!! Truly appreciated!!
Hi Nichole, Thanks so much! Happy you love the hat. When you are decreasing for the crown of the hat you will have fewer and few sts on your needles. The st count will get so small that you will not be able to fit your sts on one circular needle so you will need to divide them between two needles to finish up the crown. Some knitters use DPN (double point needles) at this time but I use the 2 circulars.
+Tammy A I am super sorry, but due to the fact I will be physically teaching the coming weeks I really don't have the time I would need to create these two videos for you. This is what I recommend you do to get the help you need.... In the youtube search box type in "How to follow a knitting chart pattern" and how to knit using duplicate stitch". There will be a ton of videos that come up for you to look at. Just watch a few and find the teacher that you like the best and follow along. I hope this helps and I am so sorry I can't help you at this time. :)
Hi Joan, thanks so much for your video, I was understanding everything pretty well until Line 15!! I will definitely have to study that one. Here's my question: I'm a continental knitter, not a good thrower,. How difficult is it to do this only doing continental knitting for both colors? Will the "New" color always be under the previous color? Thanks again Joan, I just think you are one of the best knitting instructors out there!!
Regrading line 15 ~ you might understand the chart better then the written instructions. Remember you will read the chart from right to left and then just repeat the 16 sts from line 15 over and over again until you get to the end of the round. :) You can carry both yarns in your left hand. A lot of knitters knit fair isle that way. The yarn may or may not be under the precious color ~ that will depend on how you knit it. Are you on Facebook? If you are I will upload a picture of this awesome knitting tool that I have seen knitters use to knit fair isle the way you are referring to. I can't share a picture here on youtube of what I am talking about.
kskc1234 OMG ~ I thought so, but I wasn't sure. Lol ~ I almost said something, but I didn't want to bum the person out if it wasn't you. Lol I will post a picture of the tool I am talking about on my Laws Of Knitting Facebook page in a few minutes for you. Comment on the post when you see it so I know you saw it. :) It is called a "Yarn Ring".
How do you knit the pattern into a fair isle thumb? I always mess it up, and when it calls for 2 color increases, I don't understand how to do that in a thumb. Have you got a video on thumbs with patterns knitted into them??
Hi Nancy, I would have to read the pattern regarding the 2 color increase to help you out with this. I would need to read how the designer wants the increases done. :) No, sorry to say I don't have a video tutorial on knitting a pair fingerless gloves with Fair Isle work in the thumbs. The best thing to do is contact the designer of the gloves that had the difficult increase you are referring to and ask them for assistance. :) Let me know how it goes.
I'm talking about when you make the gusset, when you must increase. Well, in a chart, there's the increase symbol in one color, but the next stitch is supposed to be a different color. The increase stitch splits off into 2 separate colors. How do I make the increase stitch into 2 colors>??
My only thought is that the next row you will be knitting with the colors that the increase stitch is split into. It sounds like she is lining up the colors for the next row. In that case it's fine that the increase stitch will be in two colors. I would just work it up as she wrote it and knit a couple more rows and see how it looks. That might help you understand what she was trying to do. If after you work up a few more rows and it looks off you can always knit to the colors that don't line up, drop the stitch and pick it back up in the color you want.
These are three books that I have and use frequently: 1. amzn.to/2CDRlOj 2. amzn.to/2CzsZVO 3. amzn.to/2LE0bhL Book 1 has a lot of historical info at the beginning of the book and nice fair isle charts to work with. Book 2 has a lot of charts but that's about it. Very good for designing. Book 3 is a good choice. It as pretty good teaching at the beginning of the book. The rest of the book has fair isle charts with examples of those charts worked up; that's great. It mostly has smaller charts (not the overall large fair isle pattern you would put into a large piece of knitting); which is nice as well. If you only want to buy 1 of the books I would buy book 3 "200 Fair Isle Motifs", but I do use all three.
thanks so much Joan I really appreciate your advice. all I will be using it for most likely are hats and small objects anyway so this sounds great! thanks again. Linda@@LawsOfKnitting
May I ask what size circular knitting needle are you using to make that beautiful hat ...I think I keep coming across the wrong size circular needles.....we have a few teenage girls I would love to give this a go for .....thanks for sharing...I'm learning so many things from lots of videos......
Hi Lisa, Sure, I used size 6 for the ribbing and size 7 for the body of the hat. Thanks for the compliments; I appreciated them! I am sure the girls will love their hats. :)

Hi Tara, You sure can. You can trap whenever you want. You just don't wont long loops going across the back. That helps to prevent things from catching on the loops. For example if you had long loops in a pair of fair isle gloves your rings might catch on the loops or a hair pin might catch on the loops when putting on a hat. :)
that's what i thought, and why does it seem like watching these videos makes fair isle look so darn easy??? at times i think there must be more to this.
Tara Wood It really is easy. I started practicing with dishcloths and found it wasn't so bad. Every time I mention that I will be teaching a class on Fair Isle at the shop I get some scared faces and then when they give it a try the stress just goes away. Everyone tells me they wish they had tried it sooner. :) I guess anything new can be frightening. Just dive in!!!
Manel Queen You are so welcome. How are the mittens coming along that you wrote me about? Can't wait to see them all finished and on your lovely hands. :)
I have decided that although I love the fair isle (thanks so much for teaching us) that Instead of doing a lot of it " I enjoy small amounts on hats like just a few rows. funny as I am norwegion so you would think I would like so much more lols thanks again for teaching this it really adds to my hats.135 and still going strong. by next Christmas I am hoping to have enough to give as many little children in Armenia as I can a hat to keep warm.
I understand what you are saying, but it's not about how long it took you to get there...It's all about the journey. 😊 It used to take me weeks to finish a hat that I can now work up in a day. Be patient and enjoy your journey. :)

You can carry both yarns in your left hand.
Joan Laws yes, I am on Facebook. It's Hannelore Farrell. thanks!

OMG ~ I thought so, but I wasn't sure. Lol ~ I almost said something, but I didn't want to bum the person out if it wasn't you. Lol
I will post a picture of the tool I am talking about on my Laws Of Knitting Facebook page in a few minutes for you. Comment on the post when you see it so I know you saw it. :) It is called a "Yarn Ring".
Kskc1234, I am a continental knitter and it's quite easy to do this pattern
Kskc1234, if u want help I can give u some pointers
Foarte frumoase, va mulțumesc mult pentru ajutor
How do you knit the pattern into a fair isle thumb? I always mess it
up, and when it calls for 2 color increases, I don't understand how to
do that in a thumb. Have you got a video on thumbs with patterns
knitted into them??
If after you work up a few more rows and it looks off you can always knit to the colors that don't line up, drop the stitch and pick it back up in the color you want.
joan can you recommend a good book on fairisle. one with charts and techniques.
These are three books that I have and use frequently:
1. amzn.to/2CDRlOj 2. amzn.to/2CzsZVO 3. amzn.to/2LE0bhL
Book 1 has a lot of historical info at the beginning of the book and nice fair isle charts to work with.
My daughter is 25 and my niece is 19 I think they watched your video together and they downloaded the same design and giving it a try they love to hang out together and tease me when I have a new project....So the race is on...LOL
@@lisaa.1126 I LOVE this! Sooo, the race is on ~ Let me know who wins and I will send the lucky winner a FREE pattern of her choice. I hope that will be an incentive for you three. :) Here is the link to my shop to have a look: lawsofknitting.com/shop Love Ya! Have fun! :)

Videos en Español , por favor 🙏🏼
My first ever knitting was a fair isle, not a success but i'm thinking of starting again, older now, less impatient, more knowledge !
That's fantastic. I love fair isle.
Thank you great tips ;)
side kick Glad I could help. 😁
Is this pattern still available?
It sure is Peggy; the link is below the video in the descriptions. For your convenience here it is: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/alexs-fair-isle-hat
can you trap with only 2 stitches? meaning trap every 2 stitches.
Tara Wood
It really is easy.
Joan Laws i plan on it
Tara Wood
You go girl!
Use this pattern
thank you for help ;)
Manel Queen You are so welcome. How are the mittens coming along that you wrote me about? Can't wait to see them all finished and on your lovely hands. :)
I have decided that although I love the fair isle (thanks so much for teaching us) that Instead of doing a lot of it " I enjoy small amounts on hats like just a few rows. funny as I am norwegion so you would think I would like so much more lols thanks again for teaching this it really adds to my hats.135 and still going strong. by next Christmas I am hoping to have enough to give as many little children in Armenia as I can a hat to keep warm.
I will love to riche to that point but it will tack me so long ,'🤔
I understand what you are saying, but it's not about how long it took you to get there...It's all about the journey. 😊 It used to take me weeks to finish a hat that I can now work up in a day. Be patient and enjoy your journey. :)
Great ! But missing subtitles . Pleeeeease !
Jose Brazil Thanks so much for the remainder 😄 I will be out of town for a bit but will add the subtitles when I return. ♥️
Done! I returned home quite sick so I only created CC for this video so far...just for you!
❤❤❤
@@LawsOfKnitting Ohh sweet ! I'll check it right now ! Thxsss
Be fine ! ...and healthy !
the bottom of the video is missing cannot start stop or go back
Linda McNeely Are you watching on your cell phone? I can’t either if I watch RUclips videos on my cell. 😳🤪
ok got ya thanks
Why do you throw the yarn in your right hand, There's no need to . It slows you down.
Habit habit habit.😲 I have tried my best but I just naturally come back to this. I think it's so cool when people use the ring to work Fair Isle. It's a dream of mine, but I guess this is just my way. 😂
it was $6.60
That was due to your Vat tax. :(
WOMANS CAST ON NUMBER C.O.
That depends on the circumference of her head. Look at the sizes of the hat in the pattern and you can choose from them.
