  • Clean up Corroded Auto Taillights & light sockets
If your taillights. parking lights or side marker lights are not working and it is not a burned out bulb, the chances are that you have a bad bulb socket. Most of the time a socket goes bad is due to corrosion. You might be able to clean out the corrosion of the bulb socket with WD40 and some emery paper. But the better way to get the bulb socket really clean and make sure the new bulb that you install has good contact, is to soak the bulb socket in a 50% solution of vinegar and water. The vinegar solution will dissolve any corrosion in the bulb socket safely without harming any metal or plastic. After you soak the bulb socket in the vinegar solution a good hour or more, you can then use some emery paper to remove any other corrosion and followup with some WD40 to prevent corrosion. Use electromotive grease when you install the new bulb, to make certain no moisture can corrode the bulb socket again.

Thanks, you just saved me a lot of aggravation. My son's Yaris had a headlight that was cracked allowing the bulb connector for the turn signal to corroded over time. I tried cleaning it several times but couldn't get it to work. I found this video - soaked the connector in vinegar for an hour and it worked!

Well that worked better than I could have hoped for. Mine was a metal housing and there's no way I could have gotten down there with any mechanical means to properly clean it out. Thanks much!

Thanks for the knowledge. My '08 Opel Astra's drivers side taillight just went out; signal, running light and reverse light and I cannot find a harness to buy to even try to replace it here in the states. This helped so I don't get a ticket hahah, thanks.

    Thank you!
    Excellent idea that obviously works.
I will try this with the notorious Xsara Picasso ECU plug connectors.
These sometimes corrode rendering the whole car useless.
Up to now I had thought that replacement of the whole socket - with around 20 connectors - would be necessary.
Hopefully this idea will work on these connectors.
Incidentally this is a design fault on the Picasso - the ECU is not weatherproofed sufficently.

Will try your method, rear 1999 Camaro SS light socket is $50! I tried electrical spray cleaner but the rust is real bad. Will try the Vinegar. Should I unplug the battery before dipping the socket in vinegar?

I don’t have to take a battery out do I? It’s taillight bulb and I have little wire connectors. I’m thinking of just taking out connections???

wad up a paper towel soaked in pure vinegar, stuff it in there gently so it doesn't lose all it's vinegar let it sit 10-60 minutes or a day, re-wet it occasionally,

Should i unplug truck battery first before dipping in vinegar?

I'd say yes. It's a good idea to disconnect the battery when working on sockets and.plugs to.reduce the likelihood of shorts. Remember to disconnect negative first!

I got a totally corroded side marker socket just like this one in the video. So basically what ur saying is take a cup, fill it with 50/50 water/vinegar and let is soak in there. Do i need to use emery paper to clean it out or will the socket be clean after soaking? I got electrical grease for after when putting the bulb back in but before i put it how did u get it dry? Thanks

Mitch Rubin Emery will help. You need both the vinegar and emery. I tried just the emery and it would not clean up good enough, With vinegar & emery , it cleaned up fine.

Ive never used emery paper, is there a specific grit u used? Or does emery come as one standard grit? Thanks
