    14:51 urghhhh I hate it when that happens......I was in NYC teaching a wig making class, and my hotel was in Brooklyn. I was exhausted after work and desperate for a glass of red wine. I walked miles to find a liquor store that sold decent wine, and then walked all the way back to my hotel to realise it was a cork, not a screw top FFS. I had to go back out to find a cork screw, and yep.......when I finally got chance to open the wine, the cork snapped in half........fooooooooookinell I was fuming.

      The things we do for a glass of red 😂 That sounds like hell, but bless you for persevering with your mission, I wouldn't have given up either. Incidentally, some of these corks aren't even cork anymore, more like a plastic cylinder

      Ooh that's a grand idea, I might try that! We always eat sweet potatoes or jacket potatoes with the skin on, so it might be interesting to try in a stew/curry etc, they would certainly hold their shape better. Thank you and glad you enjoyed it. Hope you are well ❤️🙏

    Good afternoon!
    That first town first gave me "Chocolat" vibes which promptly turned into a combo of zombie apocalypse and "stay on the path and keep off the moors" 😅
    Fun fact: Swedish King Gustav III was so besotted in the French coastal colors and pale yellow stone houses so he and the royal architect sent out a letter to the Stockholm residents (in 1699 I think) basically saying to the people "Right, now we're all going to pretend we live in France so paint your houses in a pale yellow". Which is why yellow is considered a Royal color here and if you ever visit Stockholm you'll see it worked. All over the country as well, but mainy Royal army buildings there.
    Love the "when in doubt, go for a stout" pub mentality. Also "wine cures whine" 😅 but that bottle was a struggle and a half. 😮
    I looove garlic! I heard that it tastes differently depending how you cut or crush it. I always crush it before eventually chopping it. Same with iceberg lettuce, if you slice it before whacking it and taking the stem out it tastes bitter. If you wash the potatoes/carrot etc well you can save the peels and fry them in cooking oil as tasty wine or beer snacks and sprinkle a little thyme, rock salt, smoked paprika or spice of your taste on it. Cauliflower or celeriac sliced as steak egged and breaded and fried as steak is so tasty as well.
    Bon voyage on your chase the sun tour!
    Cheers from Skåne!

      Good Afternoon 🌞 Currently zipping through the south of France and its 22 degrees with the sun beaming. Glorious! Just the right temperature really, we'll probably be moaning in Spain 😂
      That's a magnificent little fact about Sweden right there! I absolutely love that - and how fitting given yellow is on your flag (I wonder if that's why, unless the flag pre-dates the houses being painted yellow). I do think yellow is one of the most lovely colours you can paint a house, and let's face it, as nations we all steal and borrow ideas and cultures from each other, so in this instance I'd say Gustav made a good call 😁 We noticed a lot of yellow even in Ystad.
      The villages were oh so French and gorgeous, albeit the weather in the first couple didn't show then in the best light. As you say though, it very quickly goes from movie-set postcard, to remote rural horror film depending on how far you wander 😂
      I'm fascinated by that tip about lettuce - so it's better to take the stem out first, then err, whack it, before chopping? I must try that because we eat it all the time 😁
      Agree about crushing the garlic- I do usually try to remember that but keep forgetting. I sometimes just grate it instead which does similar.
      Really loving the sound of those vegetable peelings fried up, that sounds right up our street and obviously saves on waste considerably. And damn, salivating at the egged and breaded cauliflower idea too 😋
      Thanks so much for the tips, I really appreciate that, and now we're both super hungry 😍😂
      Hope everything is well in Skåne, take care and thank you for your great comments as always ❤️

      @@comealongdearsooo green with envy at the sunny description 😊. Gustav was a very interesting monarch who did a lot of good and also had many flaws (some for that age) and was finally assassinated at the Royal opera. The yellow on the flag is supoosedly a symbol of two light beams on the sky basically but it also resembles gold etc. My dream is a French cottage yellow kitchen. Such a pick-me-up color.
      As for the lettuce I smash it (pretty hard actually) stem down to make all the leaves loose from it and the just pluck it out after. Try it, it does make a difference. And do try the steak cauliflower/celeriac. Looking forward to more sunny images! 🌞

      @@comealongdearst remembered a summery tip for cauliflower fans:
      Slice a small head into bite sized bits
      Slice a fennel
      If you have it slice a small kohlrabi into bite sized staffs
      Mix
      Put olive oil, your choice of vinegar (champagne, white or apple), plenty of mushed fresh garlic, salt and pepper and loads of freshly chopped dill along with juice of a lemon and mix into dressing to pour over the fresh cut veggies.
      THE best summer crunchy salad ever!
      It won't up your friends number, but it will surely make you feel great anyway. 😂

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  2 месяца назад +1

      Gustav sounds like a character who, from a quick scroll, certainly seemed to have some forward thinking ideas. Being assassinated at the opera is quite a camp way to go out as well, I assume he's one of the more remembered Swedish royals as a result of all that!
      Thank you, I will try that lettuce tip next time we pick up an iceberg 😁

    • @comealongdear

      Oh I don't know, that salad certainly sounds like it would win a few people around 😁 Sounds absolutely delicious, we could happily eat all of that raw so that works for us with all those gorgeous flavourings. That would be something we can easily make in the van too 😍

  • @JonTanOsb

    I just buy the crushed garlic in a jar. :) A good way to peel the cloves is to lay the flat part of your knife on it and give it a whack. The skin cracks and is easy to pull off.
    A versatile vegetable, garlic makes most foods more flavourful, and if you travel to Transylvania, you can hang a wreath of garlic over your beds for protection from vampires.
    Halloween is over and done with. I was sick, so didn't go to the village party. I went for a wee nap at 6 pm and woke up at 1 am.
    Oh, speaking of time. I had to turn back my clocks an hour this morning. I wasn't sure if it was 2 am after midnight on Saturday or on Sunday, but my iPhone and computer knew, so I only had to change my microwave and clock radio.
    Well done on the running, Stephen. You're getting quite fit. And that was quite a walk for you, Dan. You must be feeling better.
    Cheers, and happy travels.
    Jon in rural BC, Canada

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Jon, I'm glad the wonders of technology allowed you to figure out the time, I think we all rely on that now 😂
      I do usually crush the garlic if I remember, but yeah a jar or tube is even better. It's so fiddly in the van that we really ought to buy it like that more often.
      Transylvania, now that's a thought - I'd love to go in the van to Romania and beyond (through Bulgaria and into Turkey perhaps). I doubt we'll get to see all these places of course.
      Hope you're feeling better now. I'm okay now (well, I managed a 10k run today so you'd hope so!), but sadly Stephen has got some element of it. If we find the Spanish sun it might banish it for good, though we're in northern Spain so no guarantees there.
      Stephen is doing a grand job with the running I agree, he's shaping up pretty well!
      Cheers Jon, take care ❤️

    We loved the Loire, but completely missed those cave houses and don't think we'll be that way for at least 2 years, but they are going on the list anyway.
    Vanlife food! For us rice, rice and sometimes rice... Love a home made curry and love the fact that like us you just throw in whatever you have or normally whatever is out of date and we can't bring ourselves to bin. Think we've had this discussion before but french packet mash is actually quite good and gives us a change from, well more rice. Anyway, now off to cook some rice for dinner.... Much love Darren and Alison 🤟❤

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  Месяц назад

      I think we ended up in totally the wrong place for the proper cave homes, but it seems there is lots in the Loire, so worth investigating for sure! Even if it is 2 years away for you 😂
      Yes, rice is a constant here too. I love it but it does get repetitive. Couscous is a great alternative though, and easier and quicker to put together. Back home, we stocked up on Aldi's packet rice/quinoa/grain combos, they do some great flavours too, not sure if we'll find those in Spain so much.
      Enjoy whatever you had with the rice 😂😍 Take care both, much love to you ❤️🤟

    I’m just loving this journey with you - you are taking us to some lovely interesting places: troglodyte caves, subterranean church and lovely villages. I can’t tell you how envious I am but at least I feel I am part of the journey. I love the campervan cuisine spots too - always glad of ideas to cook. AND you’ve got sunshine and warmth - we haven’t seen the sun since we got back from Norfolk a week ago ☹️. I hope the better climate will help with the after effects of your cold. My OH is like Stephen- she may as well be invisible until 10 am - I’m the opposite 🙄. Stay well and safe. ❤️❤️

      Hi Irene, I'm so pleased you're liking the journey, and definitely consider yourself as part of it 🥰 Do you think you'll be able to head abroad at any point? It's not always possible I know, which is why we are just so grateful we get to do this in the here and now. Nothing lasts forever so we're trying to savour it while it lasts.
      I'm hoping the warmth does help the colds, but sadly Stephen has come down with it now 😧 Oh well, hopefully we get it out of the way at the start of the trip! 🤷‍♂️
      And I'm pleased your other half is similar to Stephen, we're not alone then 😂 Somehow it works though (well not always, we have bust ups and see things differently many times 😉).
      Hope you're well and I hope you get to go on some camper adventures again in the not too distant future 🙏❤️

      @ sorry to hear Stephen has got the cold now after all ☹️. As long as we have our 3 dogs, we shall be staying in the UK ☹️ , but who knows what will be in the future. I console myself with the fact that I have been more than fortunate to see a bit of the world through working as a flight attendant with Lufthansa for more than 15 years at a time when we had good stop-overs and not such huge planes - but it’s not the same as just going where your fancy takes you in a campervan. I can’t complain. Looking forward to your next vlog, hope you are both well by then. ❤️❤️

      @comealongdear  Месяц назад

      Thank you Irene, well it's good you got to see some far flung places on the planes, and the UK still has its amazing spots of course by campervan. Just a shame about the weather 80% of the time 🤦‍♂️
      If it's any consolation though, we have arrived in Spain and it's entirely overcast, so...😂 But grateful to be away regardless, we'll only be moaning when it gets too hot.

    Good evening,
    I admire you both for taking on the challenge of full time van life and as from tomorrow I am officially a full time van lifer myself and been researching it for about 5-6 years , I built it out myself and not quite finished however I just want to hit the road, I do still work but now semi retiring and will still be working as a freelance sous chef…. One pot wonders are great and make a fantastic meal for the day and the next ,,, chopping the garlic would be good with a micro planer, it’s more finer and can do 3-4 cloves in less than 30 seconds, not that there is any rush but just an idea as you asked, with a micro planer the garlic is more like a purée rather than chunks so you taste the garlic rather than crunch on it, but you may like the crunch I’m just saying🧐, really enjoy watching your adventures and look forward to the next one as always. I hope you have a great time in France and wish you both all the best in the future,!. Can’t wait till your next vlog , take care and safe journeys 👍🫡

Building your own is such an achievement too, well done on that, I don't think we'd ever dare attempt it! At least you have an income sorted and doing it part time means you can enjoy some travelling too hopefully.
      Thanks for the garlic tip, I do have a grater, I think anyway, but frequently forget to use it 🤦‍♂️ It makes more sense, as you say quicker and unleashes the flavour more!
      Best of luck to you in your van journey and thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video ❤️🙏

    As ever, entertaining. Well done on the runs guys. Putting me to shame! I struggle to even get out and walk the dog 😮😂. Love the underground church ⛪️ 🙏

      Good Morning Denise, thank you and glad you liked it 🥰 It's nice to just meander slowly down through France and stop at these random sleepy places. The running does feel good when you've done one I must admit, but sometimes motivation can be hard, especially in winter!
      The church was very unusual and not like anything we'd seen before, the fact you could go upstairs and all that was carved out of the cliff was astonishing really.

      😂 I mean it won't be winning any awards, but it was tasty and comforting so we'll take it. And always tastes better with wine, of course 😉🍷

    Frustrating when that last piece of foil is not big enough for your wrap! 🤣😂🤣

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  2 месяца назад +1

      😂 I think we ended up using some plastic bag we found for our next lot of wraps before we bought foil again. Even worse was running out of toilet roll not long after 😬 (and not for reasons you think, when you've got a runny nose it's vital 😂)

    Some freedom left in France? In Netherlands sleeping in the car is banned by low.

      @comealongdear  Месяц назад

      Oh really? That's interesting, although we did hear parking in a campervan was difficult in the Netherlands. But no, France and Spain are much more open to it and cater for it in many places. Of course, they're bigger countries and have more space to do so I guess.

    Why does all the van life RUclips's have to get the making a coffee ,cup of tea at the start of every vlog!!!it's so annoying.

      @comealongdear  2 месяца назад +1

      😂 I would take offence, but I do see your point and was wondering if we were doing that a bit much 😂 We try not to do it on every video though 😉 Ultimately, it's just symbolic of the day starting, and our van routine, so I think that's why it crops up so often as an introduction
