Hey Simon, I also have two kids a couple of years apart that are a bit older than yours. That feeling of "the oldest can't help" - enjoy it. When they hit about 6 it swaps to "I got this!" and *that* is when you need to worry. Kid: Did it! Me: Did what? Kid: I helped with Younger like you wanted. Me, frantically trying to recall every conversaion she may have overheard in the past 2 years: What, exactly, did you help with? Kid: You said he needed a hair cut... Me: Biscuits!
OMG, my daughter overheard me make a hair appointment for the next day.... following morning I awoke with strands of hair surrounding my face!!!! She was 7 at the time, very proud of saving mommy a trip!!!
Yup…this definitely needs a part 2, in my opinion. Anyone remember the Mortal Kombat cartoon? Based on an extremely M rated game series. I only saw parts of it, but I think I heard Sonya Blade(an often overly sexualized character now in a 2 piece skin tight leotard) say the absolutely cringe line “it’s Kombat time!”
Growing up in the 80's 90's I fondly remember all of this and thinking the same thing. Turning Rated R material into kids programing was a big thing back then even if it was weird. I think the sudden explosion of new IP in the 80's plus the ease to access it as a kid was the cause. I can remember being a kid and so wanting to watch Robocop, Aliens, Predator, and Terminator. Sure my parents did not take me to the movie theatre to see them but all you had to do is wait until it became available at the local video rental store, most of the places around me did not care, or it would come on HBO. The toy company Kenner, who famously were responsible for the Star Wars figure craze, were also constantly looking for the next movie to profit from as this would be come what they were know for. During the end of the 80's and beginning of the 90's they stopped going after PG properties like Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters and produced toys based off of Terminator, Robocop, Predator, & Aliens. As was the common practice back then every toy line had a corresponding cartoon to help promote the product. Even the Aliens toy line had a cartoon ordered but never made it to air. Since kids were so familiar with the IP, and lets be honest it was so aimed at them, we ate this stuff up! Good times!!
The idea that I saw Simon on TV as a kid is good soil for theories that he's actually a memetic SCP that's gradually infecting media so he can eat up other peoples' time for sustenance with his tangents.
Kevin’s rant was a pretty good one (he didn’t deserve that basement violence session 😂). I’ve always thought the heart ring was the lamest one until now. I’m going to be thinking about this for a while.
Kevin did a great job on his 1st tangent and it is by far the most accurate tangent that I've ever heard on any of these videos And is something that I have been trying to convince people of for the better part of 3 decades now
If there is a sequel to this in the works Kevin needs to find the Police Academy cartoon. The franchise was about 3 or 4 movies deep when it came out and only lasted One season.
I would like to bring 2 things to your attention: 1) My 5'3" (1.6 meter), 115 lb (52.16 kg) butt managed to survive 20+ years as a Detroit resident. Never got so much as a single scratch in all of that time. I've never even been in a single fight in my entire life. So that should tell you something right there. 2) The sickest burn I've ever seen was delivered by a 12 year old boy on some talk show or another when a kid completely shut Steven Spielberg down by asking him, "Why should I buy Jurassic Park toys when I'm not even allowed to watch the movie?" That kid is nothing short of a legend!
I can only imagine Danny trying to order a pint (in one of the few pubs that still let him in). Bartender: "What will you have?" Danny: "I'm thinking of either a [insert beers]. this reminds me of [long tangent]... Bartender: "I'm going to have to ask you to leave".
I did forget they did make a Conan cartoon. Some more are cartoons based on Rambo, Highlander, Starship Troopers and Police Academy; however for Police Academy IIRC at the time the cartoon came out the movies did drop down to PG.
LOL, I should have scrolled further but I didn't know if anyone else remembered the Police Academy cartoon. I think the sequels bounce between PG and PG 13 but the original was definitely an R.
I watched the Robocop movie like every American kid did and it's still one of my favorite movies and I also watched both shows cartoon and live action, the movie is leagues above but nobody in the 80s in America cared that much, it was basically G, PG, NC-17, R and X then and most R rated films was just PG and Robocop was an X and had to be cut down to R which is what we watch now, my grandparents showed me the movie and had the VHS of it. I'm still just a normal American person and not Florida man and I grew up in Detroit.
R is our 18 rating equivalent, roughly. NC-17 (formerly X) generally dooms a movie to a limited release, as theaters tend to consider R their upper limit for showing a film, so such a rating is usually met with the filmmakers toning content back until an R rating is achieved. Think of it as a softer version of when your ratings committee refuses classification.
The bad guys in TMNT were loosely based on Daredevil. The Foot clan was a joke on the Hand in Daredevil. Shredder was also related to it, as were a number of other characters. I remember getting several of the old TMNT comics and they were pretty brutal. If made into a movie in the late 1980's true to the original comics, they would have been rated R. The language alone (plenty of f-bombs) would get there, but the violent content and graphic deaths would get there, too. If you cleaned up the language, you might get a PG-13 now, but in the late 1980's, you would have still gotten an R rating. Despite Kevin saying it wasn't that much of a shift, I disagree - plenty of the local comic stores that carried the independent label that produced it kept them in a restricted section away from the kids books.
I doubt Ted Turner would be all that thrilled to have his series rebooted and destroyed. After he kicks the bucket it might have a chance to be ruined then.
Ironically, the thing with RoboCop’s violence, especially in the original cut, is that it’s so ridiculously over the top that it’s verging on cartoonish anyway. To the point that Verhoeven thought the cuts lessened the humour of how silly it all was, making the violence seem worse.
Simon- "youtube is really destroying me behind the scenes " No one-"....." Simon- "i got it ill just create 2 more channels to make up for it" Everyone- instantly subs
EC comics didn't actually cause the Comics Code Authority. That was mainly precipitated by Frederick Wertham, a psychologist whose flawed studies led to the conclusion that comic books were responsible for juvenile delinquency. There were even congressional hearings on the matter. The code was created by the main comic book companies in order to forestall governmental oversight. Since EC was a growing force, the larger comics publishers specifically targeted horror and crime content for additional censorship. EC was much more a victim of the comic book panic rather than the source of it.
Not R rated, but a lot of "adult" TV shows got toy lines back in the day. 6 Million Dollar Man, Dukes of Hazard, the A-Team, Knight Rider, Happy Days, Welcome Back Cotter, The Fall Guy, Charlie's Angels and so on. Some of it was very "toyetic", but others remain head scratchers. There was also that Stallone movie Over the Top about arm wrestling which got a toy line for no good reason. And not just action figures, there was also a workout set that included weights, grip trainers, head and wrist bands, and a jump rope, as well as an arm wrestling table so 6 year-olds can challenge each other apparently. And all endorsed by the International Arm Wrestling Council which is apparently a real thing.

Man has 1000 RUclips channels, millions of adoring fans, a small appearance on Art Attack is claimed to be the most interesting thing that has ever happened to him!
Can confirm we got ArtAttack in Australia. I remember Neil, a talking bust and "This. Is. ART ATTACK." which sounds like a great way for anyone born in the late 80s early 90s to start an artillary volley. (Art. sometimes being used as short for artillary).
I grew up with Star Trek the next generation and now I have to avoid watching the main characters ruining all the fond memories by being far too old to believably play the roles they are playing again.
RoboCop isn't just violent, it has some shockingly dark humor. Like when a glitch in ED-209's programming causes a demo to end with a young executive shot countless times by a pair of high-powered cannons. The company's CEO turns to the responsible subordinate and says "Dick, I'm very disappointed".

No mention of the Rambo cartoon? You have an R-rated movie about a Vietnam veteran's PTSD breakdown turned into a cartoon about a group of heroes fighting unambiguously bad guys. (Though double checking reveals conflicting rates of either R or 15+. Might depend on the cut.) Anyway, that cartoon was probably my first exposure to the franchise. Also, in the UK the Turtles were known as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. I know because dad brought home vhs tapes of the cartoons, and so we watched the cartoon with a noticeable edit to the opening theme. Simon you are correct, that is how we feel during your tangents and Kevin's tangent was spot on for us plebians that actually watched the references in the script so your criticism can fuck right off! Bring back tangent intros! Free Danny! Give Sam a raise! Also keep on keeping on team, you're seriously doing the best you can in RUclips land aka digital Detroit.
I love Troma, such great classics like "Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD", "surf nazis must die" and who could forget "poultry-geist: night of the chicken dead"
Yes! I came to say the same. I grew up on Troma films and loved Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD, Tromeo & Juliet, and others.
I had the pleasure of watching RoboCop for their first time with my much younger sisters-in-law; their confusion at seeing the dad from That 70's Show being violent and evil was delicious.
Oh yes
Kurtwood
Younger Simon answering older Simon is pure effing gold.
This one needs a part 2, for sure.
Waiting patiently for part 2
I love that there was already a video in which you thoroughly explained the American ratings system.
Hi Simon I'm from Australia and you are now officially a hero in our home, as Art Attack was and still is my children's (29&22) favourite. ❤
There are plenty of other cartoons to choose from, it's just a matter of whether this episode does well enough to justify a sequel
I would like to bring 2 things to your attention:
1) My 5'3" (1.6 meter), 115 lb (52.16 kg) butt managed to survive 20+ years as a Detroit resident.
Never got so much as a single scratch in all of that time. I've never even been in a single fight in my entire life.
So that should tell you something right there.
2) The sickest burn I've ever seen was delivered by a 12 year old boy on some talk show or another when a kid completely shut Steven Spielberg down by asking him, "Why should I buy Jurassic Park toys when I'm not even allowed to watch the movie?"
That kid is nothing short of a legend!
I can still remember the graphics of when Murphy got attacked. That scene was brutal!
I can only imagine Danny trying to order a pint (in one of the few pubs that still let him in).
Bartender: "What will you have?"
Danny: "I'm thinking of either a [insert beers]. this reminds me of [long tangent]...
Bartender: "I'm going to have to ask you to leave".
I did forget they did make a Conan cartoon. Some more are cartoons based on Rambo, Highlander, Starship Troopers and Police Academy; however for Police Academy IIRC at the time the cartoon came out the movies did drop down to PG.
what is best? lol
LOL, I should have scrolled further but I didn't know if anyone else remembered the Police Academy cartoon. I think the sequels bounce between PG and PG 13 but the original was definitely an R.
Shocked the Mask wasn’t mentioned. The comics are way more intense than the cartoon show or movie
Simon lives is a strange world of knowing stuff while being absolutely clueless.
Technically, NC-17 is between R and X.
Should I be surprised that Simon doesnt seem aware of who/what Conan the Barbarian is?
Definitely not
No he’s a pleb who hates fantasy lol.
@@ThatWriterKevin Conan, Simon. Simon, Conan
Kevin is right. Out of all the reboots going on today, how Captain Planet hasn’t been done yet is mind boggling
I doubt Ted Turner would be all that thrilled to have his series rebooted and destroyed. After he kicks the bucket it might have a chance to be ruined then.
SIMON VS SIMON. How the tables got tabled. Great job Sam!
A tangent: the Ridge bolt-action pen is fun - if a bit on the heavy side, and a new ink cartridge purchased (mine had a dried-up ink supply).
Ironically, the thing with RoboCop’s violence, especially in the original cut, is that it’s so ridiculously over the top that it’s verging on cartoonish anyway. To the point that Verhoeven thought the cuts lessened the humour of how silly it all was, making the violence seem worse.
Especially the ED-209 sequence. Went from over the top funny to straight horrific.
👍 Kevin for ending with a Conan quote 👏
Robocop was one of the many movies I was shocked to rewatch as an adult because I hadn't realized what what cut out of the TV version. 😮
Simon: Why can't you use a sensible system?
Then proceeds to get confused by the system...
Hahaha, FactBoy getting owned, by well, himself, is the highlight of this week!!
Nice editing 😂
Simon- "youtube is really destroying me behind the scenes "
No one-"....."
Simon- "i got it ill just create 2 more channels to make up for it"
Everyone- instantly subs
EC comics didn't actually cause the Comics Code Authority. That was mainly precipitated by Frederick Wertham, a psychologist whose flawed studies led to the conclusion that comic books were responsible for juvenile delinquency. There were even congressional hearings on the matter.
The code was created by the main comic book companies in order to forestall governmental oversight. Since EC was a growing force, the larger comics publishers specifically targeted horror and crime content for additional censorship. EC was much more a victim of the comic book panic rather than the source of it.
8:09 Using old clips to answer Simon's questions is awesome editing!
Now for some reason I want to see a spontaneous brawl break out between the arm wrestling federation and that rock-paper-scissors league.
Hopefully Kevin survived the post tangent beating. He wasn't wrong
I imagine Simon watching this back before posting it yelling at himself for forgetting one of the millions of videos he's made.
I love how you can tell how recent a video is by the length of Simon’s beard
Detroit just keeps catching shade...and yeah, lots of abandoned houses at one point.
Did anyone else kind of expect young (art attack) Simon to have a beard?
Ah the crypt keeper, my childhood nightmare fuel.
But he was always laughing! It must be fun and lighthearted!
Oh god I love the edits when Simon goes "What does this mean?!" and then it cuts to a video where he's explaining that very thing. Also Magic School Bus and Recess were excellent shows
I will never again feel bad for suggesting a video Simon already did. If the man himself can't remember the videos he's done how am I supposed to remember?!
8:35 Thanks for the TIFO, Sam
Man has 1000 RUclips channels, millions of adoring fans, a small appearance on Art Attack is claimed to be the most interesting thing that has ever happened to him!
Yes! Captain Planet was amazing as a kid! Spot on, Kevin. We need a reboot with improvements. Kevin should write the reincarnation.
Can confirm we got ArtAttack in Australia. I remember Neil, a talking bust and "This. Is. ART ATTACK." which sounds like a great way for anyone born in the late 80s early 90s to start an artillary volley. (Art. sometimes being used as short for artillary).
I grew up watching Jackie Chan adventures, and now I have to watch the title character act as a mouth piece for the Chinese Communist Party.
Yeah, that Jackie Chan is a nationalist turd has been a major disappointment in my adult life.
I grew up with Star Trek the next generation and now I have to avoid watching the main characters ruining all the fond memories by being far too old to believably play the roles they are playing again.
(Sigh) yeah... damn shame.
@@MetalheadAndNerd how dare they age! It's like they have no consideration for how that makes the fans feel 😏
@@davemiller8408 Aging Androids. Vulcans who live for centuries suddenly aging a human speed. AGING HOLOGRAMS!

OMG
That "Secrets of the Cryptkeeper" intro finally made me understand that one tiny YT channel's intro I sometimes watch! I'm learning so much here 😂
Meanwhile, Clone Wars turning Geneva Convention into a checklist lol
Lol, yeah
The shear amount of compilations just on RUclips is astounding haha

Simon, I think it is abundantly clear that the "R" in R-rating obviously stands for "Ridge" as they are sponsoring this episode/video. 😁😁
that's the first tangent i've ever heard from Kevin and it was already in the top 10 tangents on this channel. heart was always the strongest. step your game up Simon
as a kid, i mixed up ‘tales from the crypt keeper (cartoon)’ with ‘tales from the crypt’ the late night tv show. the puppet freaked me out
The amount of Simon-not-in-the-loop in this video was amazing
Cannibal the Musical was very early on in Matt Stone and Trey Parker's career - it preceded South Park; in fact, I think it was their first movie.
My mum bless her saw the robocop toys assumed the film would ok for me to see.... I was about 7 lol same thing happened with aliens....I'm very grateful for her naivety
Aliens were my favorite movie growing up
I have a pretty big set of alien action figures
@stumblinmumbler they were cool although why did they have drake no hicks and Bishop looked like kryten from red dwarf if I remember correctly
Detroit's reputation is actually worse than the future in Robocop.
6:53 I’m surprised we share PG in common. Also, I agree that using numbers instead of letters is much clearer
Robocop and Starship Troopers were both by the same director, Paul Verhoven. Starship Troopers was also made into a cartoon and it was a violent movie.
To be fair Starship Troopers was a young adults novel.
(Presumably because of the UK's ninja/martial arts scare of the 1990s.)
