  • This is a follow on video to my first one regarding Dell R710 server hardware. This Riser card modification will allow you to put an x16 graphics card in the slot. You'll need a dremel and an exacto knife or sharp knife. I used around 25% power on the Dremel so as not to melt the plastic. You will still have to deal with the R710 bootup power constraints. And any card that requires external power will be problematic because you'll need to find a way to feed it that power. This video is for educational purposes and I am NOT responsible for any damage if you choose to do something similar.

Hi, my name is Daniel. I need help! I have no ideas. I have many doubts, I hope you can help me.
    The history is:
I have the same Poweredge R710 and I want to install an EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW gpu, we follow the steps of the video and it works, now I have problems to install the drivers. I have the original disk of the graphic card installation, but it works only in Windows 7, it installs perfectly, I have problems to open the interface. NVIDA says it does not work in this version of Windows 7. Then the Windows 10 DVD (version 1903 of Windows 10) will be installed. My problem is that the current NVIDIA drivers do not work, now a yellow exclamation point appears. I read a lot through the Internet and tutorials and they do not solve my problem.
I clarify that the gpu never gives video image (Windows 7 as Windows 10).
I need professional help, thank you very much.

Thanks a lot for the instructions! It works even with a Radeon R9 200, but I had to fetch some power from a sata port (might this cause problems?). Had about 40fps while playing DayZ on the machine yesterday. GPU temp was about 76° C.

Hauke Haubrock I don’t think that’s an issue. I’ve seen it done before but would love an explanation of how you did it.

@@AllenSampsell Quite simple: I bought a sata to 5,25" cable on ebay, attached a Y-cable (5,25" to 2x 6-pin) and just connected the two 6-pin with the Radeon. That´s all. Well, I didn´t expect this would work, but it does.

Btw: It is a Radeon R9 280 an I used one of the sata ports provided by the raid controller / mainboard. Even the power consumption information on the front led seems to include the graphics card power usage. It shows about 220 to 250 Watt.

@@haukehaubrock is this on an R710? The start up power for your card must meet the specs and only draws more power after it boots...

Yes, it is a R710, 0MD99X, Version: A07. Hope this helps.

I set the gpu on riser card but doesnt show signal , when i go on to bios setupo it appear on pcie n3 nvidia what can i do next for swap the video signal?

I think that depends on what operating system you're using. For me I was using Proxmox as the Hypervisor/OS and using PCIE Passthrough to a Virtual Machine. If you're trying to run an operating system straight off the bare metal then it's probably a much different technique. The BIOS in the R710 is not like a PC BIOS so I'm not certain you can just turn off the onboard video signal. Even if you can, if it doesn't work you'll have to figure out how to reset the BIOS to recover. I'm sure it's possible I just don't know how off hand.

yes, it works. just disable "internal video output" in your bios settings. but don´t panic, this may cause a black screen while bios / raid and netxtreme controllers are booting. but you can see those outputs if you keep one monitor attached to the internal video output. at least in my case.

Just like to know if this card in the link will work with the R710? It's the 2 gig version. Also i will be running ESXI 6.7 www.pny.com/GeForce_GT_710_2048MB_DDR3_PCI-E_2_0_Low_Profile?sku=VCGGT7102XPB

The TDP is listed as 19W so it will work at boot... It's also list as a x8 PCIe 2.0 card so that works.... BUT it's listed as Low Profile. So that won't fit... But at the bottom of the spec page is says: Package Includes - Low Profile Brackets. So that seems to indicate it will come standard with the full bracket and provide you with Low Profile if you need to use it. So I'd say go for it. I should have gotten this one too but I stayed away because the Amazon description just said Low Profile...

My graphic card came in today. It fit right in the server no problems at all. Now i'm waiting on the H700 raid controller so i can run SSDS

Glad it worked for you. You're going to have fun running the wires for that H700. Never thought about it but it makes sense that the SAS/SATA interface might no enable SSDs. Pretty sure I've read that somewhere.
