Winner of the 2023 International Booker Prize, Bulgarian author Georgi Gospodinov’s compelling dystopian fiction ‘Time Shelter’ introduces us to an eerie world where people seek refuge in artificially recreated pasts. Translated into English by Angela Rodel, Gospodinov’s enigmatic tale unravels a curious aspect of the human psyche which uses nostalgia to deal with sadness and despair. At the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Series Jaipur Literature Festival 2024 , in conversation with Nandini Nair, he talks about his book and the personal and political experiences which shaped this unique work.
Georgi Gospodinov’s works have now been translated to acclaim in 25 languages, have been shortlisted for more than a dozen international prizes - including the PEN Literary Award for Translation, the Premio Gregor von Rezzori, the Brücke Berlin Preis, and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt Literaturpreis - and have won the 2016 Jan Michalski Prize for Literature, the 2019 Angelus Literature Central Europe Prize and the 2021 Premio Strega Europe, among others. His novel Time Shelter, translated into English by Angela Rodel, won the 2023 International Booker Prize.
Nandini Nair has been an arts journalist for more than 15 years. She is the literary and culture editor of Open magazine, having previously worked in The Indian Express and The Hindu. She runs a monthly event in Pune called ‘Talking Books’, which brings India's best authors to the city.
