Lol...years ago my sister and I went on a week long backpack8ng trip with a group on Yosemite. Our ranger told us that he often liked to take e ending hikes. One evening, he became aware of a mountain lion following him on a path just above him. The cat never bothered him, but followed him from the Valley floor to Tuolumne Meadows in the upper Yosemite. When I went to stay with another one of my sisters and husband in Colorado, there were puma tracks near the house that sat on 40 acres in the boonies. I took my two large dogs with me and we ended up in a Grove of small trees. I could feel the cat above us in the trees and when we emerged from the Grove, the cat screamed at us. My sister and her husband did have problems with pumas under the house, and once when my sister walked out on their deck with a large plate of raw burgers to cook on the barbecue, a large puma jumped off of the deck, just as she opened the door!

Often, while in the remote desert, ravens, (my spirit animal), guides my discoveries. Indigenous oral histories connect raven and man with symbiotic lessons, forgotten by us modern thinking folk. Jeff, you have connected with Nature and the ancient ones due to your respect for the land and cultures. Bless you and your travels. 🙏🏼
You are so respectful of the ancient ones. It’s possible their spirits know you and know the soul you have ,kind ,respectful and leave their places as you find them. So yes I understand your feeling of calm. Thank You so much.

This is one of your coolest videos, Jeff!! So awesome! I love the door in place and the look at it from inside! And the ceiling too!! The fingerprints were so humanizing. Like a signature on a painting. I can see how visiting a place like this would settle your nerves. These places, and this one in particular, have a...well, calming effect on jagged nerves, whatever their cause. A timeless quality that soothes & heals. And I get to experience that again through your trekking. Thank you, Jeff. ❤🥰👍😁
In my 20s-40s I too liked to hike. I went on some adventures around Southern Illinois National Forests and parks while attending university in Carbondale. When we went home after graduation, I rediscovered the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Many weekend hikes are fondly remembered. There are hikes up around Duluth Minnesota, Fort Snelling, and many County parks around Minneapolis and Saint Paul. It's those I often recall while watching your awesome adventures. I'm 63 now and not in shape for much walking let alone hiking. Your adventures are as you describe, a shared experience with you. I'm very grateful. 👍🏼
One of the best examples of a grainery even have an in place door! It really shows the effort that went into protecting the harvest from mice, pack rats and even many types of insects. Not quite hermetically sealed but better than most 18th century European or Anglo farmstead storage! Thank you!
Hi dude, love the channel. I live in New Mexico, and have ruins all around our land. We even have a granary, some pit house remains, and some watch platforms. Anyway, Raven is a guardian, and good luck. The birds were watching out for you and protecting you. The presence of Raven is always a good omen. Sounds weird coming from a Christian, I know. I just wanted to reassure you. 🙂
What an extraordinary, ancient structural find! It is interwsting to see a structure so much more intact! Thanks for taking us on your explirations! Years ago i used to go mountain biking with one of my sisters. We rode every day, often at night after work. We have encountered lots of wildlife including pumas, (mountain lions), bobcats, deer, fox and coyotes. One evening we were riding up a steep trail in the dark, with only our helmet headlamps. We had heard about a pack of coyotes attacking single horse riders in the area. My sister is younger and was a better climber than i was so she was well ahead of me. I had a sense of something following me, so i turned my head and my headlamp fell upon a pask of coyotes. When the light hit them, they scattered and fell back yelping at me. But soon the regrouped to follow me again, but everytime i turned my light on them they scattered until the gave up when we were near the top. I have nevered had a problem with any wildlife encounters. Coyotes are opportunists and often travel within urban areas looking for an easy meal. But i have never even heard of a coyote attacking a human. This includes coyote/dog hybrids. We saw a really big one in the Santa Monica mountains while riding the trails there. It just looked at us, but made no move to approach us.
Great find, Jeff! This site was a REALLY, REALLY, different type of construction from every SW ancient ruins site I've seen on any of the YT SW ruin treks! The circular shapes and circular openings were the first I've seen, and it makes you wonder if they are a lot earlier than many we have previously seen. Also, the smaller the corn cob, means the earlier the type of corn it was. (BTW; not advised to touch them, since they've been used as toilet paper for centuries!) Very interesting!🙂 Thanks again!
When I was younger I had an old Native American man tell me that the crows follow you around to protect you from evil spirits, their cawing scares them away
I've worked in a place where the ravens would watch you to make sure you didn't leave your backpack or lunch bag sitting around unsupervised. They knew how to unzip the thing!
I have seen 2 Mountain Loins. Both ran away from us and we slowly walked away. Both were in very grassy areas in the high desert, towards sunset. Super cool to se those ruins! Yes, I think you are right, probably granaries.
@ I don't know it's what my grandma always told me and she was a prairie girl in South Dakota. She told me anything from nature was always something positive from God.
@@meganh4011 You are very lucky to have someone like that in your life ,I’m glad some people are passing that wisdom on. Whenever I see one of the creators blessings I can rest easy knowing it’s a guide and not something negative or evil
Crow and raven will spot pray that’s to big for them, so they make a lot of noise knowing a mountain lion is near by, the lion knows what the noise is, the raven/ crows letting him know there is pray, the raven/ crow waits until the lion is done with kill they share the meal

I was hiking in an Idaho state park elevation 7,000 ft when I came across a huge Puma track just off the paved path. I was the only one on path and soon I realized there was a predator more deadly than me. I cut short my hike and headed back to Boise.
Jeff, I truly appreciate your sensitive observations of these ancient sites and petroglyphs. Enjoy taking these trips with you. Take care and thanks for sharing your adventures! 🇨🇦
Your reverence at these places matches how I feel about them also. Am currently hiking in the Arizona desert. Love it and I know you do too. Can't go as far anymore as you do so wonderful to go with you.
Thanks for the outdoor adventure. The high today is only 8° in Minnesota, so I can only safely go outside for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. That doesn't get you far. So appreciate the views.
I don’t live in the wilderness, but with coyotes coming down from Canada, there’s no thought of going for a walk after dusk. Snowed recently. Tracks clear on the snow, edges faded, made me wonder if the visitor to my driveway was raccoon-or coyote. No outdoor cats anymore. Literally, none.
I live next to a smal conservation area, but it's a residential neighborhood. This winter for some reason my backyard has tons of coyote tracks, along with deer, bunny, and bear. So glad everyone is having fun out there at night while I'm watching Matlock...
Raven are so cool! Puma/cougar/mountain lion or whatever one chooses to call them, they scare more than bears or dogs. They're like a large barn cat and you're a mouse!
Mountain lions are not among the hazards hiking here in the Scottish mountains but I swear that those Ravens have their own insult language. Amazing vid. Thankyou .
I think being there would give me chills - the exciting history kind - and bring tears for the timelessness of the ancient people who lived there. I hope their lives were peaceful, it seems like how could they not be. How lucky for you that you can do this. And lucky for us that you are kind to share. Taking us places we'll never go. Thank you so much.
Living in cougar country as we do I can tell you they are not even remotely afraid of humans in the slightest bit. Know a guy who was camping in our mountains and sitting by his fire when a cougar just walked up layed down across the fire from him and to wash it's self. The second it left he got to his truck climbed till day light then packed up went home 4 days early.
As usual, this was thought-provoking. And as I haven't before seen this type of shelter, I began wondering if this type of "mud shelter" was actually common, but have been mostly destroyed by nature and/or man. As to being tracked by a predator, I am well-prepared up to and including bear. But you wisely noted that animals may not be the worst encounter.
Ravens have an interesting language , I learned this while on break outside and they had unique audibles and planning to swoop down for food in lunch buckets. I’ve been horse back with big cats and the horses would shiver and be very spooky and on alert.
A cup of coffee & a doughnut cushion. .... that fizzled out a bit 😅😂 Yes i had a mountain lion right in front of the car on our way home & finaly he ran off to the side. Neighbor said he was scratching their Horses up. Thanks Jeff. Love your show❤
Scratching their horses?? Wow! Do they have a couple of donkeys too? I hear that donkeys will fight and protect all the other animals in the general area. Not sure where I heard that though LOL
Another awesome Trek Planner adventure Jeff...what an interesting and beautiful area... Hoping to go to AZ next month....I need some desert decompression . Thank you for sharing what you do. 🙏🏽 God bless🙏🏽
I really love your channel. I've been exploring the desert southwest for about 35 years now, from Northern California. I envy your ability to easily get into the Utah wilderness and explore these special places. You are also respectful and educational in showing these heritage sites.
That overhang/cave looked sketchy and at first I thought they had made a “support” to keep it from falling on them. But no, it looked like a granary. I did like the handprints in the mortar. Getting spooked by the backpack sliding will get you started on a path with anxiety as a companion.
I really enjoy watching your hiking adventures through the American Southwest. I’m disabled now and I love going on hiking adventures with you. This was a very cool episode Jeff, and yes, the hand and finger marks are very special! Have a Happy New Year, and stay safe out there!
What an amazing find! Thank you for sharing all the details you came across. My husband and I love your channel and your open candor so much. We feel we could be friends. Looking forward to your next adventure!
My best friend and I had a mountain lion encounter this summer. We went for a hike together for the first time in years up at the old Pioneer trail on Big Mountain Summit (we're both over 40 so it was probably a foolish decision to start there LOL) and as soon as we got on the trail, still within site of the parking area, we were seeing mountain lion and bear tracks (older, dried tracks), as well as elk and deer. This was about a week after that person was attacked by a black bear in Cottonwood Canyon. We were worried, but given that none of them were fresh we kept going. After about ten minutes I heard something walking in the trees about a hundred yards away, but my best friend was like "I didn't hear anything." About 5 minutes later I went to go check something out (ended up being a campsite) in that direction and heard a crack. I knew something big broke a stick. My stomach dropped and I look up to find a deer staring at back me in the trees. Phew. After my heart slowed we were like ah, it's probably fine then. If a predator was here now it would have scared the deer away, right? . . . Right? So we keep going about an hour in this crow screams like a damn person in a tree right behind me. I jumped. Not gonna lie, it might have even made me pee a little. We get past this pond and down further along the trail, and this crow is just following us, randomly screaming. Now we're like an hour and a half along the trail and the crow flies off and I can hear something walking in the tree line again, but it's not loud like before. I told her "There's something in the trees over there, maybe it's a squirrel, it's pretty quiet." Then I hear a low throaty meow. I stopped. My friend looks at me like huh? I tell her "Shhh, I just heard a meow." She's goes "No. I didn't hear anything." Then it meows again and her eyes get as big as saucers, "That was a meow! Let's go. Let's go now!" I always thought I'd panic. My biggest fear is being eaten by an animal. I have nightmares about it. But for some reason I just went super calm and started to think of what you're supposed to do. She's freaking out and we started to head back when she goes, "But mountain lions don't meow, what if that's someone's lost cat?". I pulled up a video of a mountain lion meowing, just like we heard, and she's like let's GTFO now. I legit thought she was going to try to "rescue" this dang mountain lion 😂. A few minutes later we run into a couple heading towards where we had just come from and we let them know. They kept going but pretty soon they passed us and we're also headed back. So not super exciting. I wore brightly colored overalls and her son thinks maybe it stayed away because bright colors in nature usual signal venomous animals. I have no idea, but it never actually came out of the trees, we heard it meow a couple more times and I could hear walking in the trees every once in a while, up to the point we ran into the couple, then it was gone. We hiked several other trails over the summer after that, just in less isolated areas, but I think I'm going to get bear spray for this spring, and those overalls will be what I wear, just in case. 😁
A Frozen Face Adventure and what a Beautiful one it was - love that Canyons - the Landscape is Brilliant ! Climbing Down and seeing those Fantastic Ruins - wow and wow again ! Thanks for taking Us along ! Many Cheers from Australia !
I’ve heard it said that even domestic cats, when they stare at you, can be sizing you up…. _”could I take that stupid human?”_ But a mountain lion might not settle for a tin of tuna. That does sound pretty terrifying.
Such stunning structures! I'm grateful that you shared this trek. I live in a city in Ontario, Canada, and due to our close proximity to Lake Ontario and some local brush lands, we see coyotes quite frequently. My wife, daughter, and I saw one playing in the snow on the street in front of our house one evening during the week between Christmas and New Year's. I hope you can get over your anxiety, Jeff, and get back to enjoying the outdoors fully again. Best Regards, Shea Laking
This was wonderful to share. Thank you so much Jeff. I have respect for your instincts to stay alert to possible danger too. Stay prepared, and stay safe.
Wow those structures are so unique. They remind of a swallow nest or a mud daubers nest. So beautifully organic. All wood and clay used to build and then piles of flat stones outside the entry ways. Quite the find.
You need to pick up a pair of googly eyes to put on the back of your hat to prevent mountain lions from going after you from the back. I've heard it works.
Thanks Jeff, it was very cool! I can’t imagine those were anything more than granaries? They were small and there didn’t seem to be any char on the ceilings? Part of the fun is trying to figure out the purpose. I’ve never seen any finger marks in mortar like that but it would make me feel a real connection to the ancients. I get that feeling when I see hand pictographs. We’re so envious of your treks!
W0W what am awesome find. Glad you go to these places and put them on the channel to watch. With all of my surgeries, I would not be able to go out on a hike and enjoy
Thanks for another awesome wander through your amazing wilderness over there. And yeah, those finger impressions in the mortar kinda brings it closer somehow. Cheers again from kiwiland mate😎🤙
He seems overly concerned with threats from animals, including the human type, for wandering about in the desert. Imagine the biggest threat, by far, is falling down a cliff or just twisting an ankle and not being able to walk back to his car. Which is not to say you needn't be alert. Good find.
I'm older and I love my armchair adventures with you! You keep it real and personal. Thanks
Hi Linda! I'm SO glad you are here! Thank you so much!

Nice find! In my experience it’s pretty unusual to find exterior plaster in place.
AMAZING !!!!!!! Ultimate find 😘
6:00 a Conspiracy of Ravens LOL nice "group of" reference, watch out for the Parliament of Owls!
Or a murder of crows.
Lol
TIL that a group of owls is called a Parliament! LOL Thank you!
JEFF❤greetings from Oz again😊Loving every video and subbed to side treks! you're awesome for sharing😊
A mountain lion crossed the road where we were driving at twilight. In a local hiking area in Oregon. Thank you, Jeff. Incredible find!!!
So amazing seeing the flowing shapes that the wood and the mud encourage to manifest. Beautiful.
Amazing find! Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you Jeff for sharing with us this such an amazing discovery. Safe travels from this Australian🇦🇺.
He carried that ball of clay all the way up there. Hundreds of years ago. Beautiful.
Great video! I loved the scenery! Plus seeing those ruins were so cool. Awesome!!!
@5:03 Man, I've been looking forever for that cup!
I thought I lost it over at the _Grand_ canyon.
AWESOME. Thanks for sharing. It's so fascinating how creative and hard-working these people were. Beautiful landscape.
_”could I take that stupid human?”_
But a mountain lion might not settle for a tin of tuna. That does sound pretty terrifying.
I'm always amazed to see such old structures in such good condition, especially when you see what simple construction materials were used.
Best Regards,
Shea Laking
Oh Sensei, I feel like we should have you 3d capture all these sites FOREVER! (to share with great grand children)
Maybe the ravens made a meal of the guy who left the cup and they're following you hoping for the same. Ravens are extremely intelligent .
This was wonderful to share. Thank you so much Jeff. I have respect for your instincts to stay alert to possible danger too. Stay prepared, and stay safe.
I always try to be ready for anything, but I really appreciate you saying that!
I’m always intrigued by how different each granary in that area is. Every structure has its own character.
11:36 Perpelexity has never heard of corn husks used as mortar ingredient!
Great idea!! Might have to get some big ones to put on my hats!
They do that in India for the tigers and apparently it does work
The fingerprints were so cool! What a great trek! Thanks for taking us along!❤
Thank you for watching again! :-)
The important thing about your channel is the gift you give all of us of discovery ❤
I’m glad to know you carry for your safety 😊thank you for sharing another excellent video !
Thank you for taking us along. It was AMAZING!
Those structures looked like they were very old.
Another cool adventure. Thanks, Jeff.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
He seems overly concerned with threats from animals, including the human type, for wandering about in the desert. Imagine the biggest threat, by far, is falling down a cliff or just twisting an ankle and not being able to walk back to his car. Which is not to say you needn't be alert. Good find.
This was exciting. Thank you for bringing us along in so many ways
Very unique structure!
That was one of the favorite ones that I have seen. Awesome find!
I got followed by ravens at Medicine Wheel a few years ago. Was pretty wild.
Thanks, I enjoyed your trip!
Great find! Thanks for helping us see a part of our collective history.
Cool find. Thanks for sharing
Crows, pretty sure. I feed 5 to 100 each morning. That’s the call they make.. and they’re Extremely curious.
