I love you because you choose stock cabs over IRs, Jason XD; it shows us that we can get awesome tones without 3rd party IRs at all; I explain this to my friends all the time, just as you do with us. Thanks for this one, again!

Exactly. I tried some IRs, and honestly I wasn't that impressed. I find it more satisfying and actually easier to just use the stock cabs.

I typically agree. I have purchased a few different IR packs. Most of them don't inspire me any more or less than the stock cabs. My only exception is I made a set of IRs of my Marshall JCM900 cabinet that I have been using for over a decade and it was instantly familiar and what my ears are used to hearing.... That said, if I am not using those IRs, I am using stock cabinets.

@@nickagervasi I can totally see using IRs you make of your own cabs. That makes complete sense. But yeah, most IRs I've tried are just... meh. No better than what I already paid for in Helix.

I love using the 2x12 Interstate with a single 160 at 6" back. There is a different low end response and mid to high end response in the 160 compared to the 121.

      The 160 sounds way better

I'm also a HUGE user of the Interstate cab with a 160 mic 3" back (although I typically do a dual cab with the same cab abd a 421 1" back on the other side)

Great as always! Have you ever dug into the preamps in the helix, if cell would you be willing to do a video on those at some point?

Awesome tones, Jason. The cabs sound sexy even with the effects off.

I very much enjoy this channel, and I think that the most universal Helix patch would use stock cabs - I do feel bad if I share a patch that uses an IR file. But the line in this video about not feeling like you're missing much by not using IR's.... c'mon, man! It's one thing to avoid them in patches to be shared or sold - that's a good idea. But it's another to sort of suggest to people that they aren't missing much. IR's can make a HUGE difference! That's why most pros like Pete Thorn use IR files with their Helix.

great stuff as always Jason. You rock. Save your $ and time and stick with stock cabs unless you have a zillion hours of free time and $$ and want to go down the rabbit hole, or you really need one particular cabinet that is in your actual inventory that you love and isnt in the Helix but must have. If Jason can get the sounds he gets from the stock cabs and sounds fantastic then no need for IRs unless its ONE specific IR for one specific need. IRs are a huge way for folks on YT to generate $$$ flow.

Nice! Some great info in here. I thought you would have used Snapshots to change the Cab, rather than adding all the cab blocks. This is also a nice way to change the tone (mid boost maybe) for solos - just pick a different cab via snapshots.

Jason, do you know how sharp/gradual the high/low cut curves are on Helix? Do they vary based on whether it’s an amp, cab, eq, etc? I’m thinking like an EQ plug-in where you can adjust the curve sharpness (12 dB/oct, 24, etc).

Hey Jason, i would really appreciate your help. ive had the helix for a year now and i just cant get the tones i need, they just sound muffled i tried everything from tweaking to new IRs to buying from artists and still they sound nothing like the ones on youtube. ive been using amplitube 4 fo years and the sound is crisp clear and no matter how much effects i put or how i adjust the pickup volume the guitar sound just screams, while helix always sounds muffled like something is covering up the sound. i think the Cabs could be the culprit here but i could be wrong.
i even tried recreating my favorite amplitube settings to helix (they both share similar gear) and still the amplitube wins me over, i really want to use the helix because it can be used live while amplitube cant and i know it has potential.

Ahmad, What are you using for monitoring the Helix? Perhaps your monitors (or headphones) are not offering you the FRFR flat response to really appreciate the sound your Helix is putting out. I'm using a Powercab 212+ for in-the-room listening and gigging, and Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 85 ohm headphones for in-ear, and they both sound great. You're not giving quite enough info about how you're listening. Helix wouldn't be the dominant force in the market that it is by sounding muffled.
If you're confident that you fully understand how your gains, effects, eq's, and compressors are modifying your signal (hence output) and are tweaking them to your taste and STILL not getting what you want, I'd try the Global EQ settings onboard Helix to see if you can correct. Also remember your pickups are going to have a huge impact on what's hitting the front end of your signal chain: crank all your guitar controls to 10 when you're designing a patch.
And as a side note, Ahmad, Jason here offers some of the best advice and tutorials I've seen on RUclips on how to design tones for the Helix. If you're new to his channel, Hit Subscribe for sure! (I also hit the bell notification. I've watched pretty much every vid he's done for the last year and a half, and just learned a TON from him. You've come to the right place, my friend!

@@timothyjohnson9739 Hi Timothy and thanks for the elaborate reply. I am using a pair of M Audio BX5 which seem to work fine for amplitude, all my guitars have dimarzio pickups in them pf which the brightest one is the PAF PRO still the sound is not quite there. i haven't tried the global EQ settings, will do so today and see how it goes.
Jason is one of favorite channels and frankly he kept me hooked on the helix despite losing hope a long time ago i just keep coming back to it trying to tweak it. anyways again thanks and will come back to post my findings after changing the global EQ settings.

after noodling for almost 2 days straight, i finally got it sounding Epic, it was all in the cabs and how you manage the mics. i was able recreate the dual cabs setup in amplitube with two different mics with each pair panned to the hard left (2 cabs) and hard right (2 cabs) with a multitap delay going left to right. the sound is HUGE similar to 80s lead solos. if anyone is interested let me know i can post a video on youtube for it.
      thanks timothy again.
