- Freediving trip to Palau to visit the Jellyfish lake.
I has such bad visibility on this trip to Palau, the ocean water was like mud... so all I got was this video in the Lake.
Koror was a great little town to explore. The Palauans were such friendly people. They would always say hello, wave from there doorsteps as I walked past, stop their cars to I could cross the road, always give a wave or acknowledgement when walking past.
The government has put in a whole bunch of taxes, permits, charges etc - which have made Palau ridiculously expensive. Charges included Green Tax ($30), Departure tax ($20), Rock Island Permit($50), Peleliu Permit($25), Jelly fish permit($100).
Having jellyfish permit just means you are allowed enter the lake area - you pay this on top of the cost to of the tour to the lake. So, a tour to jellyfish lake would cost you about $100 USD for the tour + 100USD for the permit - so its $200 minimum for a 20 minute swim in this lake.
The same goes for the Rock Island Permit ($50) - that cost doesn't include anything, no diving, no tours. So to go diving you have to pay for a tour separately, 2 dives with gear will cost you around $150 USD + the permit.
When you leave you pay a 'Green Tax' and its on top of the departure tax ($20), so in total you would need to pay $50 USD to leave Palau.

Dewd, awesome man. Your videos take me to another world, always. Thanks.
I new you had a winning video from this trip! Well done Dean. Nice choice of music, again, too. Thanks for posting.
Dude you are awesome ! You should have 1 million subs for the work you're giving us srsly ! Keep up the good work, peace !
Incredible video Dean - like in a dream. Mind blowing!
Underwater traffic jam :-)
i like ur videos and i am from slovenia and i watch all ur videos, you are fantastic ... :D
love the soundtrack of your diving :D
Woah! That's really cool! It's like you are swimming in a screen saver or something!
Awesome video bro .. been wanting to go there for many years !
Do you freedive? Next time im in Palau we can go for a dive.
Wow this place is cool! Another amazing vid Dean
Wow, so strange but cool. Great dive!
I saw this lake in a tv-show. This is really incredible!
Your shot at 3:00 was awesome. It's too bad the ocean was murky when you went. A friend of mine just got back and said the diving was amazing. Makes Guam look like sub par water ha
Awesome!! I'm going to have to visit this place!
Hi, good channel, keep up the good work!
i got to go there last year. Such an awesome experience
Thanks for the comment Jan. Its comments like these that make it all worthwhile. Any decent diving in slovenia?
Should come to Ireland some time I was diving recently in Valencia Island Co. Kerry with 25-30 meters Vis.
Keep up the good work your vids are cool. :)
Sorry to hear about your experience. I do enjoy going back home to do some freediving/spearfishing. I hear from individual travelers about these cost and I agree it's a little pricey, even my kids, although Palauans, still pay the Green Fee. I know the local government is trying to collect these taxes for preserving and maintaining these sites.
As for the Jellyfish Lake fee and why the fee is so high? I've personally spoke to one of the lawmakers about fee; their intention was to control the crowd. They've closed the site once because some visitors were disturbing (eating) the jellyfish. After the closure, the tourism industry wasn't too pleased as some of them travel half way around the world but was denied the opportunity to see the lake. So, they reopened the site with a high fee hoping it will reduce the number of visitors to the lake.
Most of the tourist going to Palau are on a package group deals and prepay the tour agency. For individual travelers, I can see how it's frustrating paying for permits, fees, taxes, etc. Next time you plan to go, let me know and I'll will make sure you capture the best underwater footage ever. I'll give you the local tour. No Fees!!!
***** Let me know the exact date and I'll meet you there. I'm currently in Guam, but it's only a 2 hour flight and practically cost me nothing to fly there, except tax, lol. Seriously, I can be up there on the weekend and make arrangement for the dive.

Hey man thanks. This actually is not the video I wanted to make! I wanted to be in ocean making vids - but the sea was awful while I was there, so I ended up in the lake. Stay tuned though, cause I think ill be heading back to Palau next year to do the video I originally planned.
It seemed that I wasn't subscribed and that is why I haven't seen your latest video but now I have so it is all cool!
And that was INSANE, you say they don't sting but I would have been going crazy because that kinda stuff scares me loads ahah
AMAZING VIDEO and it is awesome how you hold your breathe haha :)
man must be nice swimming with them around!
Amazing as always! Lot's of people there though. If you went deeper, how is the water temperature? I can imagine -because the water has no current- it would be cold on the deeper dives or am i wrong?
No these jellyfish do not sting
I would try get some local advice, and get many do some goggling about some popular dive sites in the UK. No vis will be aweful and you'll loose your nerve when you can see nothing. which area of the UK are you in?
2:59 - best shot! :) Other wordly
That's Amazing!!!
Amazing video man ur such a great freediving teacher but how the hell did you not get stung by those things
excellent video!
another great vid! what did you use to record with? Gopro hero 2? or 3?
Amazing video, i'am definitely going to subscribe for you.
Hello, your video is really good. I have just a question : which video program are you using ?
the jelly fishes are so cuteeee
Guys thanks so much all for your support. Everyone always give such encouraging feedback.
Ok thank you very much !
Hi Micheal, thanks so much for your comment. Your breath hold underwater is reduced because your spending to much effort to get down. Relax, be efficient. Freediving at all about getting the most time underwater by being efficient. The means saving energy in every way, from kicking, movement, even equalization. Start by reducing the amount of kicking your doing, think about what your doing in the water - then think about a more energy efficient way to do it. Anymore questions, come find me on FB
So cool !
Which camera are you using ? Gopro ?
I did like your activities a lot. nice tricking SCUBA divers, and I would like to know what is the mount you use for your camera?
you should go to cozumel i just went there scuba diving/ free diving and loved it
Lucky that these guys due to evolution lost there cnidoblasts and just photosynthesize now if not you would be in a world of pain. Around these parts we have mangrove jellys which almost look exactly the except in saltwater of course and one brush up with one of them and you will second guess the rest of your swim lol. Awesome video man keep up the great work
Ok thank you very much. You are using a gopro right ?
hey man i like your videos but u gotta put out more often pleaseeeee and can u do a video talking about how to recover breath from a dive pleaseeee and more videossss i need moreee cause there awsome =p
Hi
Me and my friend from norway got so inspired by watching your videos, that we went to our local dive store and bought full freediver kit! we live in norways so we need to dive with 6,5mm wetsuit! On land we can hold our breath just over two minutes, but when we get underwater 5-10 meter, we can only hold like 15-30 seconds! what are we doing wrong mate? hope to hear from you soon!
If your in the UK, you'll definitely need a wetsuit and weights (the weighting topic is discussed in one of my videos). You'd need atleast a 4mm or 5mm suit. Im using Billabong personally, Xcel is also great, and there are many other freediving specific brands. Why not search for a freediving course in the UK. That well definitely kick start your freediving.
Do those jellyfish sting at all? Neat video
I believe they don't, if they do it's quite minor. You can see at point ps when're the jellyfish touch him and doesn't look like it hurt.
Yes. GoPro Hero 2. Im normally shooting in wide. If you want to shoot closer up, fish, wildlife etc, medium is better. If you want to shoot big underwater scene, wide is the best.
Thats so cool
Thanks man
How was orchid?
Nice, chose jellyfish doesn't hurt ? I myself in Orchid island 'if No typhoon gonna try snorckling haha probable ont vert deep
Right cheers man but like I said I cant see a thing down the beach .. does that matter or is it okay cos I only want to practice for when I go on holdiday for 10 days a year
Omg they are so cute lol...
Hey! I'm going there in a few weeks. Any tips? I was told by this one company that we only get to be in there for 30 minutes? That sounds useless! and we need to pay $150 extra to film in there. Any info on this? What company did you do use to visit places out there? Did they have very good fins for rent, or did you bring those? Is this enough questions? hahaha Thanks!
***** jeeze that place sounds like a ripoff!! haha I'm bringing a 5diii, I wanted to get a ton of footage in there, among other places. It's a pretty damn far trip for a small cluster of islands, I doubt I'll do it again after :)
Too bad they don't let you stop by there on the way back from the scuba day trips... Thanks for the info!
Haha, that reminds me of Pixar's 'Finding Nemo'!
Great
Awesome
These don't sting. That's why they have become a tourist attraction
Hey man. Im using "Windows Live Movie Maker" its the basic of all the video editors. I would like to upgrade to Sony Vegas, but my PC is very very old - so this is the only thing that works.
they don't sting. That's why this place is famous. You can read about the place on wikipedia. Ill put the link in the description.
Cressi Gara Professional are pretty good for that price.
Whats your budget?
Where did you buy that blue stick for your go pro ?
In one of his earlier videos you see him make it out of a hiking pole / walking stick
Cause need to wear one on the boat ride over to the island. 99% of the tourists wear the life jacket in the lake too. When I took it off, the guide was like "are you sure!?!"
Great , thanks from arabia ,we say ( shokran ) in arabic
Wow!!!
oh wow, I just read your extensive "about" info :) What a ripoff! I wish I knew this before!! Did you do any of the other locations? Scuba/dive? My main reason to visit is obviously jellyfish, but I've got 6 nights and 4 days to kill :) Is it possible to visit jelly lake multiple days on the way back from other dives?
thanks jdwo. GoPro Hero 2.
Hey man I was wondering what kind of fins are good for free diving?
I'm assuming that those jellyfish don't sting, or did they?
Sooooo crazy! :D
Hey I'm 14 and I did freediving in Bermuda lately, I'm from America, bit I don't thinl Bermuda was the best place because its the 3rd saltest water so I found myself struggling to stay underwater. But I have a question, I can hold my breath for 2 minutes above water, but when I get underwater I vant hold nearly as long, it there a reason for that or is it cuz I'm not as relaxed
I am wondering why you wear on a life jacket at the opening ?
Its near London ish and how long does one of these courses take ??
What do you have your camera mounted on?
Great video. What is the song?
I found sth about the jelly fish lake: The anoxic layer that begins at about 15 meters contains high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide which can be absorbed through the skin of a diver which can lead to death. How that layer arises?
how many times did you get stung?
Right.. so I dont need a water proof watch or wieghts and I live in the uk so I cant really do it there cos the visibility is like 2 Inches
Finally a new video. XD
That's where I'm from!!
I have one do you know if we have to shoot in wide of medium ?
How was the hike... lol
Man, i am trying to find a way to freediver the german channel... but everyone tells me it's only scuba... Have you got any input ? I would appreciate
If I were you I would be so ticklish when the jellyfish touch my body
Do they sting?
way too many tourists for my liking.
jellyfish do not sting?
How you did get stings
dont they sting?
I would like to go there, but the problem is: I hate jellyfishs :D
LOL not like the jelly fish in Destin, FL =)
the one at 3:29 got owned by the pole
You killed nearly 729827784 with your fins xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
up the kingdom :)
Hi! What song played on this video?
