Yeah, well I guess so, but I have been looking for a source of information or a school or a way to learn how to repair ham radio rigs. My dad just laughs at me and says, "people still going around fixing things? That was all back in the 60's. There was lots of electronics repair going in the 1960's and there was money in it!"👍

Kenwood make amazing serviceability of their old radio's, amazing how you simply pulled the board out to service. I had a TS-120 in the early 1980's, used mobile travelling all the way across Australia, I learn a lot from you, Alan, Thanks for your wonderful channel 73's,:-) Barry, VK2FP/AG7VC ..._._
Well congratulations. Hope there is not much more to fix. I bought an IC-735 at a Junk sale last weekend, "dead no TX or RX", paid $120 NZD, for the IC-735, AT-150 tuner, and PS-55 power supply. When I got it home, (what I wanted was the PSU to power an IC-271H I'm restoring), I found the power connection pins and sockets burned up on the rig and the psu. Must have been loose. So I replaced those, and now the Rig goes, as does the PSU. Then I found that the socket on the IC-271H does not fit the PSU. Seems it had been 'modified', by a previous owner. So now I'm fitting a replacement socket on the -271H, from a dead IC-730. LOL robbing Peter to pay Paul, as my mother used to say. Oh and the IC-735, had only CB frequencies in the memories, so yep. This is my first batch of 80's Icom's to play with, and I'm quite suprised how nice they are to work on. Would love to work you on air from New Zealand once you get the TS-120S going. 73 ZL2ALW RE79qw
Wonderfull, that the 'old Lady'(Kenwood - TS-120S) is working like a charm, now! -100% succses! - I have to say to you, that I also have a 'Kenwood TS-130V' - wich is the follow-up radio, of the 'TS-120' ! But this radio (TS-130V) only 'generates' max. 10w output power! Mostly inside, the radio's are the same, from the hardware- side. (lacking the 100W PA transistors, of corse!) Only the more "'band's" they have. (all SW, excluding 160m, but plus the WARC-band's. Why they have done that, is and was, a miracle for me, ... ! Why no 160m, in this time periode?) I have 'bought' an additional 'CW-filter', with 280Hz, and also the small 'SSB- filter', with 1,8kHz, for my radio. And these filters are worth every cent I have spent, to buy them! It makes a real good 'CW- mashine' out of the 'only10W-TRX ', ... but also a beautiful 'SSB- radio', with good receiving 'additionales', to the stock TS-130. The 'only thing' you will missed, is a 'dsp' noise-reducing system, but this 'part' of equipment, was never aviable, at the 'legale time' you could buy such a rig! I used my kenwood TS-130, as a 'back-up TRX' and second (T)RX, during 'contests', and some other times, on an second antenna, searching for 'multipliers' on other bands, ... ! In that special way, I use my 'TS-130V', there is no negativ issue, only having 10W output. On CW, 10W is often 'more then enough' riding the waves, when the coditions are fair, ...! - Again,... sorry when I made some mistakes in English, it is not my native tounge. - 73 de Markus - db9pz - JN39fq - 3miles/5km east of LX -
The BC547 is such a jellybean transistor I can't believe it's suitable for high gain, high frequency application like this one. It's a quite popular transistor in Europe while in America the 2n2222 is more popular.
There's nothing more satisfying than a good ham radio rig repair.

Glad you showed the temp effect on the curve tracer! 👍

Always a great video, with HOT curve tracer action!

So now the question is should you change all the other transistors of that type or not?
I definitely would..

How about transmit?
Sadly, troubleshooting time vs something like a new IC 7300 is more and more questionable. Good for you to have seen this one through!!
Wait, aren't you going to demo it.😮
wow and peace be upon you sir from me
Great work 👌👏💯👍

Hmmm, as i understood all VCOs were not working properly and you changed only one transistor in one VCO and now all VCOs are working?
Maybe one was loading down the whole bank.
I think I can understand why the little component tester didn't consider that a transistor anymore.
You have the exact version of the transistor in schematic
Not just replace all Q1-Q5?
🙂👍
