Since the might drop was significant they knew it was inf front
And about the morale
That is how traps work
A certain percent of your army needs to fall before morale hits 0 and since traps have way too many troops they don't go down to zero casuing a cap.
Edit:-this is why army hp is necessary on the attacker as it gives more time for your rally to wittle down the opponent troops to burn them.
