This is one of ABBA’s true hidden gems. They found themselves taking pop music to a more layered level…experimenting with more adult subjects outside of their more usual love/love lost songs. It showed such depth and really leads us so smoothly to VOYAGE almost 40 years later where they still are passionate about love and the world around them. What a perfect band.

The Visitors saw the boys beginning to focus on the cold war which was at the forefront of Europe in 1980 a decade before of the fall of the Berlin wall. They went on after this album to do the musical chess - also set in the cold war. Bjorn recently made a speech in support of Ukraine. He is still very passionate about this issue. Great reaction. You guys are awesome.

This song is ABBA's ultimate B-side. So good. Glad you mention the drum beat. Per Lindvall has a very unique way of playing them. Sometimes the snare sounds just like a gunshot! He's ABBA's drummer to this day and also in both Mamma Mia's albums.

Thank you both for sharing this, I love your channel ! Agnetha's 'Soldiers' is a critique of militarism. Billboard explains "emphasizing that although there seems to be so little one can do to prevent the machinations of soldiers and those who control them, we must "not look the other way/taking a chance/cos if the bugle starts to play/we too must dance". The Telegraph describes the premise of the song as "how warmongers convince themselves they are noble men".

As the album released I didn't notice this song. Years later I heard in an interview the inspiration and now it's a masterpiece for me: this oppressive synth and guitar sound fits the lyrics brilliantly, not forgot the driving soldiers drum beats. With the title track and the final song Like An Angel Passing Trough My Room these three songs and the album cover - as Richard Keane wrote already - were and are expressions of the Cold War with the immense military rearmament on both sides around 1980 (US Reagan with Europaon on one and Soviet Breschnew on the other). Melissa and Tyler you couldn't react on a more topical topic: a song that is easy to miss.
All the best specially for all the people in all countries who only want peace and peaceful coexistence for all!!! Only ❤ counts!!!

That takes me back too! The LP would be placed on the turntable of my Fidelity record player with its 'cool' white casing and white speakers [trendy times!]. No headphones to use of course, so I would resort to lying on the floor with a speaker either side. 'Eagle' was my favourite when doing that, and I remember when I got a copy of the Swedish 'ABBA The Album', discovering that the sound of the soring guitar from one speaker to the other was reversed compared to the UK copy. [ I remember reading later that that was indeed the case, as they were pressed differently]. You've brough back memories there!😀

Y'all should really react to the Medley that ABBA put out as a B-side to "Summer Night City" containing: "Pick A Bale of Cotton", "On Top of Old Smokey", and "Midnight Special" ..I really think you guys will love the production value they put into it, originally recorded in 1975, they shelved it until 1978; when they remastered it and polished it up some and released it as the B-side to "Summer Night City", which at the time was a stand alone single that wasn't on any album (until it was included on "Greatest Hits Vol.2") so at that time you could only get both if you had the single, and the medley didn't surface on any album until it was on 1994's "Thank You For The Music" box set.

Love this one! In this song, "Soldiers" are warmongers who we can't ignore. Once they start a fight, it affects all of us. The term can also be a metaphor for leaders like Putin, who lead us down the wrong path. ...soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing, the songs that you and I don't sing....let's not look the other way, taking a chance...'cause when the bugler starts to play, we too must dance.
I think you'd like a couple of early bangers "Bang-A-Boomerang" from ABBA's 3rd album in 1975 (also had Mamma Mia, So Long, SOS, and I've Been Waiting For You on it. Also "Tiger" from Arrival, their 4th album. And "Hole In Your Soul" if you haven't listened to it already.

It was a good choice to have Agnetha be the lead for this song, since she has the more vulnerable tone. It seems to basically be a warning not to put political decisions in the hands of the military. I think a form of military conscription/national service was around when Bjorn & Benny were young, so they have that experience too.

You realize a small common theme with "The Piper"?
"We're following a strange melody... we're following the piper..." = "If the bugler starts to play, we too must dance..."
Both carrying the theme of being lured into something, of an irresistible influence, that might lead to something very bad.
In the story of the rat catcher, the citizens suffered the loss of their children, due to their cheating and greed. here, the bugler (signal trumpeter of the military) calls for war and destruction, due to the greed of warmongers.
In parts of the bridges in this song, they definitively quote the guitar-play of "Eagle"

Love that you loved Soldiers - can't wait for the aftershow because the song has several possible meanings - my take on it is that it's about the question : if there's a military to act as a deterrent (keeping/defending the peace) - just by them being there doesn't this eventually leads to war even if there's only an intention to keep the 🕊️ peace ?
I would like to suggest a couple of songs from the Waterloo album because you haven't done a lot of music from that - Gonna Sing You My Love Song + What About Livingstone (both a bit of a change from the last few ABBA songs you've reacted to). Watch Out - also from the Waterloo album -is fantastic as well.

@@alexioverdo5225 It was certainly commercially more successful, but that’s not what I meant…The first albums are bubble-gummy in a way that to me makes their sound more commercial of that age, while The Visitors- even if it came in a time when synths were popular- obviously is more experimental. I like the first two albums too though; they were the first studioalbums I had with them, and I kind of like that they hadn’t really found their full sound yet! But it’s not so weird that The Visitors sold more despite being less commercial; they had just recently for some time outsold every other group in music history.

From the same era, but not included in the album: Should I Laugh or Cry, B-side of One of Us (1981). Painful, frustrated and rather angry sounding lead vocals by Frida. Both the verses and the chorus are amazing, though it could be argued that they don't necessarily fit togehter. However, the verses are so good, it's still a masterpiece.

yeah, I like the rhythm, the drums and guitar work, and especially the vocals. it's ironic that Abba is Swedish, and Sweden was a neutral country in the Cold War (despite the Soviets intruding into their territory, by sea and air). compared to this patriotic-sounding song, contrast the West German Nena and 99 Luftballons which took a definitely opposed view to "we too must dance" 🤨 anyway, this is one of the uptempo songs on The Visitors. hard to imagine that just a year before, they were confidently singing "Who are you to talk about impending doom?" and now it's "In the grip of this cold December, you and I have reason to remember." nothing happened between 1980 and 1981 to warrant this dread and fear. "Keep on rockin', baby, 'til the night is gone..."

"Is it true that the beast is waking"...so goddamned prophetic. The beast is the bear or Russia, you see the war in Ukraine and this song encapsulated the apprehension of the early 80s in Europe as we really thought nuclear war would break out. Love your reactions. The music you guys are reacting to is aeons ahead of the dreck that attempts to pass for music today. 40 years on you kids and many others are discovering them.
