i throw a lot of tomahawks with putters/ approach discs for up shots. Because I'm not giving them a lot of air time they usually land upside down and give me a nice slide to the basket. It's great for uphill shots where you really don't want to roll away. Thanks for the video! keep it up.
I have thrown the putt to get out of trouble but never for an upshot. Sounds like a great idea especially on a hill. I am going to try it today when we hit a course! Thanks for commenting!
I suck at disc golf but I call that a flop-hawk... I had occasion to throw that a couple of times to get over a bush to get to the hole today. 20 to 40 foot shots with a 6-10 foot bush in the way. Instead of messing with wrist angles because that does really hurt, instead of throwing it over the shoulder, just throw it over the top of your head. Like the disc just passes over the top of your head. Not a lot of stank on it, but it'll get you to the hole or out of a crappy situation. It flies up over the bush, rolls onto the flight plate, stalls and falls pretty much straight down on the flight plate. I've had luck with it just don't throw it too hard, it'll mess with your elbow. But i used it a couple times today, one hit the basket and bounced out and the other to get out of an oak thicket to the one spot I'd have a gap to the basket. But, like i said i suck so i have to be good at getting out of trouble 😂 Edit for poor instructions
There's a few courses here in southeastern PA that I use a thumber with my putter. If I'm putting a 60 footer downhill and risk a rollaway, I'll throw a thumber at about 45 degrees, flick it out and it will slide right to the basket. Sure beats a rollaway 😁. Thanks for the video, very informative!
I primarily use the Tomahawk and thumbers because I have SI joint dysfunction. My body cooperates with this type a throw versus a side arm. Sometimes just doing a basic/standard throw I just hurt from it. (I do still use these throws depending on the situation) However, having learned this throw and somewhat made slight alterations with form, it has kept me playing! I can just about accurately place it where I want it to go. I'm just trying to get more distance with it and this gave me more of an idea of what type of discs I should use. Especially if I want more distance or I want something to get you down the lane. One of my favorite things to do with it though, having understood the anatomy of the flight is watching it curve around trees. Its my favorite thing to do and my buddies get interested in the throw too. I play just to stay active and healthy. But if there's more to improve my game and make me an even better player I am always open to learning more! Thank you!
The Thumber and Tomahawk are definitely some fun throws to watch and if it works for you keep doing it. I would experiment with different discs to see what gets you the distance you want. Understable seems to work great for those straight line throws with the Thumber. Here is a video from three years ago of Scott throwing the Thumber with some very good results. ruclips.net/video/jdt_DL_O-Go/видео.html&feature=share7 Glad you liked the video and thanks for commenting!
Great video, thank you for risking the shoulder for us. Glad you tried so many things, because you found the issue I was having with tomahawks, and a couple of possible solutions. The difference between it doing a barrel roll or flexing out is about 10-20 degrees of angle, and or switching to an understable disc. (I can't throw that inward tilted angle at all.) Also showed why I am comfy with a thumber, it seems to be easier to predict the outcome of a thumber. Spin, plate angle, and height make so much difference. I'm going to spend more time working on this now, because there are particular holes in my area where a tommy will come in handy. Happy new year!
Interesting indeed. You saved me a ton of time trying to figure out these throws in the field. I'm contemplating using a straight throw for a particular downhill shot at my home course... may be a bad idea, but I'm going to practice at a local hill. Smash.
The overhand shot is a powerful weapon in the arsenal. What I would suggest is getting to know the disc, or discs you want to use for this particular shot. I played in a doubles tournament recently and one guy on my card launched many overhand shots and they all worked.... From the Tomahawk to the Thumber discs will react differently because of the torque on the disc. Definitely get some practice in so you know what disc works best for you on both of the shots..... Thanks for commenting!
I have noticed with more of a straight throw, not being as high, my Underworld works the best. It is very understandable and does the barrel roll very quickly with a Thumber.

Great video explaining the basics and showing the differences. I’ll have to give these a try.

I love it bro. I'm out there trying to figure all the stuff out too bro. Thank you.
And thank you for watching and commenting! Best of luck in 2023!!

fantastic looking throws, far and away

Very informative video, thanks Aaron. Is winter over yet?
Jeff, spring time can't get here soon enough!
Informative videos do well sir!!! 8.6k on a long form is phenomenal!!! 😊
Great video!!
Thank you sir!!!
I throw more of a short, line drive tomahawk for some great long distance rollers (longest approx. 365 feet) using a Nuke OS.
This guy Scott I know does the same thing. Line drive throws with a Latitude, XXX.
This video definitely helped
I am so glad it helped! Thanks for commenting and letting me know.
I throw a star wraith overhand, love it! Low profile goes farther in my experience.
I will have to try mine and see how it does.
You’re right there isn’t a usable difference between the understable and overstable discs.

never understood why its called two different things....one goes one way..one goes the other
@@nunyabidness7547 I guess it is to separate the two shots so people know the difference...?
@@chainraiderdiscgolf i guess...back when i started playing in the mid 90's we just called it a reverse tomahawk ;-)
