    The reason he tracks the ball through the air is because of feedback. If you follow the ball through the air, you can assess the power, angle and spin that you impart on the ball and whether that enables you to hit the shot. By doing this you can correlate that with your shot mechanics and make adjustments in subsequent shots that you take. Similar concept to most sports involving a ball e.g. soccer, baseball, tennis etc.

    • @bballbreakdown

      +indianslaya9 what part of that correlates to baseball??? Ball moving too fast to track it if you're pitching and off the bat..

      I watch my ball after release for 3 reasons... 1. I know it's going in if it flies a certain way through the air...2 I can make subtle adjustments if it doesn't... 3. it's ASMR when you see that thing go the hoop with a swish sound...lol

  • @MrShredGuyExtras
    @MrShredGuyExtras 8 лет назад +119

    Coach, you missed the most important part of Steph's jumpsuit. He's a one eyed shooter. He's also right eye dominant, so on his release, his arm blocks vision of his right eye, and his follow through directly follows this, pointing at the rim. Paired with turning his feet, this makes almost every shot for him a straight shot, and explains why his left and right misses are so rare.

  • @deutschluz
    @deutschluz 7 лет назад +374

    Former math teacher here: as to why curry looks up from the rim to his shot. it is probably because the trajectory of the ball is parabola in math terms. So a parabola has a special property of symmetry , which means if you draw a parabola on a paper and fold it in half, it looks the same. What this means for objects like a ball following a parabolic path in the air is that once the object hits its peak in the air its path is already predefined. So curry is looking back up from the rim to measure where his shot hits peak and once he is satisfied that he hit the peak in the right spot he gets back on d without looking at the ball.

    • @shermarkijames
      @shermarkijames 8 лет назад +52

    • @dunmatta2670
      @dunmatta2670 8 лет назад +5

      I know what you mean. I see a lot of guys way buffer than me and I'm just a skinny, lanky guy yet I can shoot from 30+ with my natural shooting motion while those other guys barely catch iron. Granted I do emphasis more on the sway/hip turn in the air when I do shoot from that distance, but I believe it's all mechanics that help generate that power and accuracy.

    • @Moshealthtips
      @Moshealthtips 8 лет назад +4

      Harry Mak i agree its mechanics. just like guys who can throw the ball far in football or baseball arent the biggest guys.
      i think it has to do with him turning in the air. notice on his deeper shots he almost turns 90 degrees in the air to get power. i tried to use it and it isnt that simple to transfer into shot

  • @mbvglider
    @mbvglider 6 лет назад +9

    I think the reason he follows the ball is not necessarily to shoot that shot better, but it's part of a feedback process. Like he wants to make that immediate connection between how the shot feels and how the shot looks, so he can continually keep his shot perfectly calibrated. His feedback is so good that if it leaves the hands well and looks right on the way up, he knows he doesn't even have to look at the shot to know he splashed it.

  • @The_Paddle_Smith
    @The_Paddle_Smith 6 лет назад +10

    I feel kids back in the day have been naturally shooting with this "one motion" type of shot. They didn't have the arm strength so they relied heavily on the legs.
    They just unlearned it as they get older/stronger because they see most of the pros shooting with that 2 motion shot at the time. (Prior to Steph Curry)

  • @johnnycakeess
    @johnnycakeess 8 лет назад +5

    like you said, I feel watching the ball after release allows you to focus on mechanics, as well as give you some info whether or not the shot looks good leading to a chase down of the rebound, repositioning etc..

    @weiqi8956 8 лет назад +46

    Nice breakdown Nick. Curry uses the original knee bend to begin a "kinetic chain" and propels the energy up through all moving parts in the jump shot allowing Steph to shoot from farther out. Also, when Jerry West was making his jump shots, he was equally good at dribbling with his left hand and his right before going into his jump shot. I've seen Steph use both but Jerry often would start with his right hand and go to the midline. Steph is also such a great ball handler that he can create space so well. Thanks for the video.

    Good shooters follow the ball after their release because they were highly cognizant of their intended trajectory for that shot. They are checking to see if they executed the trajectory properly. The lesson is to be mindful of the space above the plane between your eyes and the rim.

    Things which aren't talked about, but which I have noticed is vital for my shots success is keeping the upper body (chest, upper back and shoulders) relaxed to keep the tensing muzzles to alter your mechanics as well as holding your core (abdominals and lower back) stable to effectively transfer the power from the jump and sway into the shot.

    Two things I think you left out was his balance and rotation. That's my theory on why he looks at the ball instead of the rim. I think that's one of the Curry shooting secrets.
    The intentional rotation of the ball allows him to control the trajectory of his shot from long distances. Similar to the spiral of a football or backspin on a golf ball.
    And I don't know what drills he did growing up but he's never off balance.

    There is still so much more to be discovered from his shot. I've spend a year completely scraping my old jumpshot and learning from Steph, studying countless videos in slow motion. I'm not going to share what I found because I think each player should put the time in to discover it themselves. What I will say though is you might think you are shooting like Steph but you are not even though you tried applying this video. TAKE VIDEO of yourselves and study that in slow motion too, it's just as important. Then you can really fix your shot because you can see what you are doing wrong.

  • @baikyfotiop5469
    @baikyfotiop5469 5 лет назад +1

    The most important thing for shooting is your feet. Like Curry, if your feet is set, you can make straighter shots. Also, if your feet is set and it’s not going straight, look at your elbows where your shooting hand is. If your elbow is not straight and is going left or right ( depending which hand you shoot) practice by making your elbows *STRAIGHT*. Do not jump high because it will affect your power the higher you jump. When your about to shoot with your feet set and elbows straight, put your heels up and flick the ball. Well, that’s my technique I guess. ( SECRET ) When your about to shoot, imagine your hand is in the rim when you shoot. I don’t know why but it just helps me make shots myself lol. Anyways, have a great day 😃 By the way, what I mean by “Set your feet” is like making your feet straight with BOTH of them. Don’t turn your feet that much from the side because you might shoot to the right or left 😅 FYI: Flick helps you get more power. When you think you have to much power into your shot, don’t make it less powered! Just go for it. Don’t have doubts because you might hit the rim because of less-power.

    • @steverliu1886
      @steverliu1886 8 лет назад +12

      yep, that's good defense. You'll need to get them off balance with change of direction, change of pace, etc. to setup your scoring move. And if you can't do that, call for a screen! And if still cannot, pass it! at least their good defense will be wasted on you and you can space the court to help open up the court for your teammates to score. Unless you're discussing 1v1 !

    gotta create tension first in that initial cocking the ball load up phase before the release movement. Create tension in the feet and glute and especially the stomach core area. By bending over a bit and bringing the ball near to your body you create that tension.

    Coach Nick, glad you mentioned his eyes following the ball. Coach Hoover at Pro Shot believes ball watching is a great way to check your arc of your shot. Curry has nice and consistent arc on his shot. Shooting flat gives a shooter less margin for error for short or long versus a shot with a lot of arc.

    I think the No.1 most important thing about stephen curry's shooting is that he follows the ball with his eyes. This technique helps guarantee good arc, which will result in better shooting % since the rim will now appear larger for the ball. I find that incorporating this technique into my shot automatically increased my shooting % and made shooting much more effortless. Most players focus too much on the rim, so their shot loses arc and naturally has a lower shooting % since the rim now appears smaller to the ball. It's all about science xD

    I have this mechanics when i was young. But many coaches and friends tend me to change some things then i lost my shot and my confidence i think.. I THINK IN MY OPINION, I FOLLOW THE BALL AFTER THE RELEASE TO SEE THE ROTATION AND MAKE A FOCUS ON THE ARC.. I have that very high abnormal arc but it accurate back then when it is not changed.. I have to get back that mechanics..

    When you follow the ball with your eyes, you can compare your mechanics with the shot trajectory to evaluate your form. This is why I do it. Great shooters do it instinctively or deliberately.

    curry is 6'2' if you think you much shorter than that and wanna shoot like him, you're mistaken.
    You can also breakdown tyler ulis too. He has quick release and less arch. the way he puts up his shot, allows him to utilize more force of his forearm than of his delts. Curry picks up his shot a lot narrower, which causes the shoulder more tension. He might look effortless but he's tall for most guards, and he's an nba player. don't naively think that copying his shot is gonna work for you

    • @24dbarrett
      @24dbarrett 8 лет назад

      Curry's also great at handling and creating space off the dribble so he can shoot at such a short height. I agree, if you're small it might be hard to shoot if you can't open up shots for yourself. You'll get covered all day off ball and will have to pass it out.

    I follow the ball with my eyes because depending on where I'm shooting, I know if it's good or not just by the way the ball is aligned to the rim and how high the balls trajectory is. After shooting thousands of times a day. And seeing the ball hitting that exact same rotation speed and trajectory. U just know if that's shit either falling or not while it's still in the air. That's why he celebrates before it goes in on the regular. Cuase he knows exactly how it looks on the situational basis.

    You and the team @ BBallbreakdown are doing so much to inspire us old-timers and advance the next generation of basketball, and for FREE. Thank you!
    I'm glad you brought up the left thumb, I feel this is not discussed enough. I think I disagree with you there, in my opinion the less off hand thumb, the better. I've been experimenting with resting my left thumb on the side of my hand (like a karate chop hand, but just the thumb part) I feel like it helps me and makes my shot more one handed. And I think for many people off hand thumbs introduce sidespin on the ball and less of that beautiful backspin we love to see. Another thing u see Curry do which you didn't mention...the left hand is held next to the right at least briefly before resting down. So many of the current generation were taught to hold their follow through for the shooting hand, but not the off hand. And pulling the off hand off too early introduces another force that could make the shot less consistently straight. I also really appreciate you discussing the difference between catching from the left and right. That is something I don't think anyone else talks about, at least not yet!

    i have a theory about following the ball: it's about getting the arc right. i figure that you would get more information about your arc by observing a longer portion of the ball's trajectory (the direction, the vertex, the spin etc.), so you can adjust the power and alignments accordingly. it's a part of fine-tuning your shot to the circumstances. i'm not even a particularly good shooter, these are just some observations i made about my own shooting process.
