I got one of these from a different company, works well. The steel is thicker and the handle locks. It is a bit heavier then the ozark trails version, but after watching this I'm glad I didn't go the ozark trails route
These cooking kits would be great for solo backpacking / bushcraft type of camping. No more ! Worth the price ( especially during these hard times ) Thank you sir for the review.
Thank you, Sean😁 They are certainly an ok kit to have. I'd still like to have my small 6-inch cast iron skillet. This kit kept speaking to me every time I walked by it. I thought I should buy it and do a review of it😀
9:33 what thing nice over that mess kit compared to like cast-iron you get several pots and the mess kit where one pot cast iron outweighs everything I guess it’s a trade-off. It depends on if you’re doing a hike or if you’re just getting it out of the car.
That's what I thought too. I had that aluminum set in scouts as well. It works, but it's not the greatest. If you can carry the extra weight then I'd sick with cast iron🍳
Very light isn't it. If you are on a budget then it will do the job but it does tip over easy. Definitely a hands on cooking experience. Thanks for the review Age. I really enjoyed it.
It's pretty light, which I guess is good if you're trying to cut down on weight. Very tippy, so I'm not a fan. It's hard to do more than one thing with this. It does do the job, so it passes on that mark. It was good to get this out and put it through the paces.
I'm heading out to do some camping this week, so your video was timely. You identified some real shortcomings of that kit so thanks for doing this review. Well done Age. Cheers.
Anytime, Daryl😁 It was interesting to put this to the test. I felt it was important to test it in a real life situation. For me, I'd prefer to carry the little bit of extra weight and have my 6-inch cast iron skillet out there🍳 Enjoy your camping this week😀
David Canterbury recently posted a video and stated he was thinking about adding a BSA style mess kit in Stainless Steel to the Pathfinder lineup next year. If its anything like the rest of the Pathfinder products, it will be worth looking at.
That would make sense on a hot ten stove. They would have a heating surface across the entire bottom so the heat would be distributed and not just in one place like my little stove there.
Always thought these little kids come in pretty handy. Had something similar as a kid as well. Probably works better over a propane stove, though. All the best, Michelle and Holger 🙏
Hi Age, I saw this at Walmart. It's priced at a tempting cost. However, I once had an aluminum scout kit that was similar and posed the same challenges. It's light weight but scorches everything unless you fry food in so much oil. It's a reasonable boiling vessel. Like you said, a good starter kit.
Yeah, it kept tempting me to buy it and try it out. So, I eventually did😀 Not the greatest piece of kit, but it works in a pinch and certainly good enough for boiling.
Thank you😁 Yes, I think for most this would do. I'll still be wanting to take my small 6-inch cast iron skillet😀 I hope you have a great weekend as well! Deer season just opened here, so I'm going to go take a look and see if I can even spot one🙂
Yes, for the price it's decent. I still prefer a nice cast iron and will make space for my little 6-inch cast iron skillet. It fits a good sized steak😋 That's good to hear that the tents are good there. I may need to get one, one of these days.
Thanks for sharing! Looks like maybe in general it was a little too heavy for a backpack and a little too light to sit well on the burners, but your food looked tasty! I liked how compact it packed up.
It actually wouldn't be bad weight for a backpack...it's certainly not the greatest for cooking though. It works though😁 The sausages were really delicious😋
It is lightweight and will certainly save some room in the pack. It was just a little difficult to use it as a fry pan. I've always wondered about this as I walked by it in Walmart, so I thought it was time to buy it and test it out😁
Too bad there is no such thing as lightweight cast iron. It's my favorite to cook in. I bought a backpacking skillet thinking I might carry it on hiking trips but it warps every time I cook in it and burns things if I don't hold it off the flame. Same issue you had. I guess it'll do in a pinch. Glad you showed this to us. I always eyeball that set when I cruise through the outdoor section.
Like you said, this'll do in a pinch, but it's not my favourite. I have a 6-inch cast iron pan. It's small and not too heavy. It's 1.5 pounds so I'll sneak it into my pack when I know I'm going to cook on a hike. I've been looking at this kit for a while now so I thought it was time to get it and try it out and see😁
i love these "all in one" sort of kits. might not be perfect (wonder how the scorching will affect future use), but it certainly made you a nice little meal (even with mushrooms, apology accepted. 😆 honey garlic sausage sounds really tasty. cheers, age! 🛴❤
Hmmm...another mushroom hater in the crowd, lol😂 I'll have to test it out again and see if the scorching affected it. I think it survived and did ok though. I like the idea of the all-in-one, but it's really not the best out there. It's lighter though. I'm going to have to go pick up some more of those Honey Garlic sausages. They were fantastic😋
I like the folding handle, but yeah looked a little loose..mushrooms looked great! Looks like it did the job, I like a GSI frying pan I have, a little thicker bottom with the frying pan. Great review, and yeah, good little starter kit. Keep rocking it!
@@agesadventures I defo found pre heating the metal worked better on my second attempt with a bit of spray oil but I was thinking shallow fry would work awesome too .
I was testing out a pan i got earlier in the year .its first use just stuck everything to the pan . Ive found out that pre heating the pan and then the lowest gas was ideal on a recent test .
Pre-heating would be a good idea! I've also seen seasoning of pans done. @KuskBushcraft does this to his stainless steel pans in a couple of his videos. I certainly don't like everything sticking to the pans. That is why I like using my small cast iron.
I’ll stick with my old heavier duty stainless steel mess kits. That would work in a pinch though. Not bad not great .. thank you for the testing and review! Was it pricey?
Yes, this was not something to write home to mom about😁 It certainly functioned, but not the number one choice. It cost me a total of $14.54 Canadian including taxes. So a reasonable price for what you get. It was a good test to check this out.
Thanks, Jeff😁 I like having the different angles for editing. It makes for a little more work, but like you said, it makes it more engaging. I take advantage of the multi-cam editing in DaVinci Resolve quite a bit! Having two cameras (or more) has saved my butt a couple of times when one camera craps out. I still have footage to work with.
There’s probably more suitably made pots and pans for that style of stove. Seems like the cheap Walmart brand kit there, would work better over a bed of coals from a fire. I’d compare that kit’s quality against a standard pot and pan from the kitchen. I found that some pots and pans designed for kitchen use, work better than the “cheap camp mess kits”. Jut pick a stainless steel pot and pan with metal handle and metal lid (avoid the glass, as it will break with rough handling and use typical with camping/hiking etc).
It certainly is the cheap Walmart brand😁 I thought I'd give it a test and see what happens. I'll need to try it over a bed of coals to see how it performs. You're right, regular kitchen ones can do the trick too!
Yeah, cast iron is the best! I've got a small 6-inch cast iron that I don't mind packing. I also have an 8-inch that is pretty good and that one is a little more awkward to carry in a pack and heavier. This was an interesting set and LifesAHobby suggested I do shallow frying with it so I'll need to test that out.
I use Olive Oil for most of my cooking too. Yeah, I heard it's a little healthier and it works well! I'll need to try using more next time for the pan to see if I can get it to distribute the heat a little better.
Consider seasoning the stainless steel on the skillets. It takes a little bit of time, and you’ll waste a little oil, but the seasoning with prevent food from sticking and actually help with heat control. The metal on these inexpensive kits is just so thin, the heat can’t evening dissipate across the pan surface. So give seasoning the pans a try next time before you even bring any food out to cook. JMO
Cool! I saw that at WalMart too! Yup, cubs and scouts for sure!! I'm thinking that I would have a hard time with the handle on the fry pan. How was the sticking while frying? Hard to beat the cast iron, but in a pinch, looks like it's quite functional!

Don't worry, I opened it and cleaned it all at home first! I was not going to eat off that without cleaning it first😀 Then I put it all back together again and in the packaging. I think this would work better on the briquet fire. I could try turning down the stove I had. It does have a lower setting so maybe I could try that an see what happens. It's certainly a decent price for these.
That's a lot of sausages. Watch your cholesterol (says the guy who eats pizza non-stop). LOL. I was worried that you were going to eat them all in one sitting.
