It's kind of relieving not having to worry on whether or not the person that I'm messaging has looked at my messages along with the fact that sms can send with the smallest amount of data.
iMesaage was also a competitor to BlackBerry Messenger - BB has BBM which was very popular and Apple wanted someting like BBM but for iOS devices.....and they did it.
I'm honestly surprised Google was never successful at creating their own built in system until they launched RCS. Google has the biggest market share and that would have been a game changer for them imo.
I worked in cellular sales for 2 years, and I never installed 3rd party messaging apps out of the box, none of my customers requested that, and most didn’t even know what they were. Some regulations in other countries keeps consumers from trusting/using iMessage, so apps like WhatsApp (mainly popular in China/India) were popularized in overseas markets, but hardly (if at all) here.

So you can text people Whatsapps over your iMessage app. Then i could use one app for both services.
Same. I don't know anyone personally that I communicate with daily that has an Android device. That and the iPad is the king of tablets, so if you have one of those, having an iPhone to go with it just makes the continuity even better.

iMessage bubbles were green and sms blue on iOS 7 on my 5S. It got reversed later it seems. I prefer green as the older skeuomorphic bubbles were green and the blue ones feel less mature in my view.
In real seriousness, my family is all android except me, so there really is no true need for iMessage unless I went batshit insane and decided to turn myself into a poop emoji.

It just works better, Android messaging applications have been historically very cluttered looking and slow. The subtle animations as well as built in iMessage apps and stickers are a nice touch as well. The one big difference Android does have though, being able to theme the messages app.
This message chain has been able to separate regular messaging and just give exclusive access to those with an iPhone! They did an amazing job with this!

my dad switched from iphone to android in like 2014/15, and when the imessage didn't deliver, i just held down the message to send through sms. after that my texts always sent as sms.
I love iMessage. I have both an iPhone XR and MacBook Air so I can write messages on the MacBook and if I have to head out, those messages are available on my iPhone without any issues. Plus, I can text those with Android even from the MacBook!
Not enough people use iMessage sadly, but my boss and also a few friends use iMessage, sadly no-one uses FaceTime even for just audio, the quality is so so much better. But now with iOS 12 calls to iPhone users will default to FaceTime, so this should convince people to use FaceTime more.
