I’d like to know how that engine holds up. That’s the first time I’ve seen the new KS series on a tractor and I’m curious to see if it’s as bad as the Kohler Courage Series it replaces. They’re supposed to be built better, but I’d like to know if their claims hold true. Additionally, if you want that K46 to survive, get the transaxle fluid changed at 50 hours, which is when it finishes breaking in, then every 200 hours thereafter. You have much better luck doing so compared to other people who own those. Also, try to run AMSOIL. It’s a very good synthetic oil. I’ve checked all the data sheets, and it is among the best available to consumers, making a balance of all the requirements a modern engine oil is held to. Also watch for rust, those MTDs are not made with the highest quality of paint. Take action as soon as it appears, and make sure to make use of that deck wash frequently. These are my opinions as a lawn mower mechanic whose been working on riding mowers for some time and researching info as well. Good luck.

I was wondering what mower you would recommend , or what brand you would recommend. I was thinking of getting this mower, but the one I want has the Fabricated Deck. I'm looking at a 48- 54" Deck. The one I'm seeing is a 50" Just curious what brand you prefer.
Greg Taylor Out of the other two brands? Not sure, both aren’t built very well. To be honest, if I were looking for a mower, I would definitely go with a John Deere X Series, and stay FAR away from the D and E Series John Deere’s.
Ashton good luck on changing the oil in that trans axle !!! It's sealed !!! And has to be taken out of the machine and taken apart to drain and refilled!!! Mine on the Arien, made by Husqvarna lasted 9 years behind a B/S 20 HP twin That was a nice mower but is no longer made. It was made by Husqvarna !!!
I’ve been waiting for my 30 year old craftsman to stop running but it started right up Sunday after another long winter break. Only thing I do is maintain the engine ( oil & plug) and occasionally replace belts and this year a couple front tires. I also super cleaned the deck and repaint it about every 3-5 years. I mow about 3/4 of an acre and bag endless amount of leaves every fall. Always add Startron to all your gasoline and the fuel lines and carburetor will never be a issue.

There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.
I've Had the Cub Cadet for a week[. The freight company damaged the seat and hood top, during shipping.. Cub Cadet stood behind the purchase; and, rectified the situation, by sending me replacement parts- which were easily installed. These Cub Cadet Enduro mowers are awesome!! With it's powerful motor, incredibly tight turning radius, and over-all comfort, I'm loving this Cub Cadet!
4/15/19, I got 10K Sq. ft yard to do, this looks like the right size (42") machine. Does a bagger attachment come w/this? I figure it could pick up leaves as well.
I bought the Husqvarna LGT 2654 close to 10; years ago and it still runs and cuts like new.I service it every year, keep it out of the weather. It has most all the features you discussed, and also a Koehler engine.
I remember geting a Husqvarna for birthday present now, I was 12, now I’m 13 Brings back memories. Husqvarna was obvious for me because we live in Sweden, have a thight a bumpy lawn and they are quite well priced
I just purchased a Cub Cadet XT 1 46"deck 22 HP Kohler twin cylinder. It is like all the rest made or should I say put together in America but it uses foreign parts. I did a lot of research and found that it comes down to your personal choice of what you want and need from your tractor. My last mower had a Kohler and I had about 3000 hours on it and it was still going strong when I got rid of it so I went with the Kohler engine again. Do your homework before you buy and visit several shops like I did and talk to the people who work on the different models and hear what they say this is the best indication on what your going to purchase. In the end the bottom line is they aill only serve you in the manor they are taken care of. Happy shopping.
Love these reviews and everybody comment, the trouble is that most people are comparing this residential grade lawn mower to a commercial grade lawn mower that cost 2 to 4 times as much. That's like comparing apples to oranges.
I just purchased a 46, gotta say for the money it’s great! You get what I feel great quality… everything you need is there and best part is it’s affordable and looks MEAN!
Got me a. Cub 46”. Is so it again in a heartbeat after 2 yes of ownership. Great mower. Really rugged for what it is. I put Carlisle tractor tires on it and run it that way all the time. It has phenomenal traction to the ground now. I enjoy mowing my lawn.
The Cub brand engines are made in China. The Cub has a weak reverse and doesn't seem to have the power in forward the Husqvarna does. My Cub has a Kohler which always was better than a Briggs. NOT now. The second season I used mine it smoked everytime I used it. I was informed the valve seals are junk in the Kohler. Find someone who has one and someone else who has the other mow a little with each then decide. My son bought the Husqvarna and it's a way better machine, so my new buy this year, Husqvarna of course . This has been my experience with the two, Hope this helps.
I've had the XT1 LT46" for a year now. It has a 2 cyl 22HP B&S engine and I love it. It cuts a beautiful lawn, comfortable to ride and like you said, steers like butter. Great vid!!! I think I need a Squatch sticker now.

I got the Husqvarna last year mode with it for a couple of weeks the quality of cut is terrible I then took it back and got my money back and picked up a cub the same day and the quality of cut is also terrible but I'm stuck with the cub as I can't spend my life taking mowers back
EVERY lawn mower should be considered "disposable" to some extent. It's just a matter of how much each will cost over whatever time period you own and operate the machine. You can spend $10,000 for a "professional" grade mower, yet have expensive repairs and replacements after the warranty expires. Conversely, you can buy a low-end, budget mower from a big box store for $1500 that has a 3-year warranty, and even if it blows an engine or trans in year 4, it's cost you $500 a year ($1500 divided by 3 yrs of warranty covered ownership). Sell it for parts for, say, $300 (tires, wheels hood, the mower deck--even the seat and steering wheel have resale value) at that point and you're down to $1200 as the cost of machinery to do your lawn for 3 years. IMO it's cheaper and less risky to buy a lower end model with a good warranty and expect nothing out of it beyond 3 years than to invest in a higher end model that you expect to get 8-10 years of good service out of--with only minor expenses. Another perspective is to determine what it would cost to have a lawn service do your lawn, and compare that to the cost of that mower. I know for $500 annually--at least in my area--that will get you 10-15 cuttings each season, which is about the extent of our growing season (Michigan).

We also did the math and came to the conclusion that we're ahead by buying, however, it's hard to put a price on personal time. Believe me, there are some days when I wonder if it'd be better to pay a professional yard service. But then when would I do all my thinking for new videos? 😅
Rockinroller I got 9 years out of my Arien 42" cut 20 HP twin cylinder B/S and the trans went south !!! Engine and everything else is still top notch and runs great, BUT rather than spend close to $1000 to replace trans I spent the extra $500 and bought that exact model YTH18542 Husqvarna....BUT I wish I had spent the extra $200 and got the twin cylinder engine, BUT here again it would have been a Kohlor engine. The new Husqvarna, first one was sent back, mower deck vibrated horribly, steering wheel 1/2 turn off center head lights didnot work !!!! Shame on Husqvarna for letting that machine out the door !!! Quality control ???? And shame on Lowes for not making sure it was ready to go, it was all assembled. That one went back !!! 2nd one mower deck was better but not smooth running !!! I removed and replaced the blades with a set of new Husqvarna blades that I had fine balanced, I do that to all blades, it ran better but not as good as the old Ariens, basically the same deck. The new Husqvarna deck seems to shudder and struggle through any grass with a little volume, you have to slow down so it will cut !!! and I do NOT like the foot pedal control. ackward compared to the old Ariens hand control. the machine is OK but I would spend a little more money and buy a little better machine next time !!!

And the new Husqvarna is not as good or user friendly as the older Ariens, which was made by Husqvarna, strange too they have the same deck and use the same blades, spindles, pulleys and belts, why I went with the Husky, plus all my spare parts I have !!! Those spindles do NOT like rocks !!!! If you hit a rock it breaks the mounting ears off the spindle. I keep a pair plus pulleys on hand and a set of blades because in the middle of mowing you hit a rock and break a spindle, in a short time you are back in business. I am not in the habit of mowing rocks but we live in a very rocky area and rocks "grow" out of the ground in the winter !! Freezing !!!! and tall grass hides them. I mow about 1 acre, fire break around the house and my small orchard and previous garden area. Arien was a great machine, only repair was spindles and I know why, tires are a problem keeping air in them, goat heads but tubes and slime eliminate that problem. and yearly service of oil/filter changes and some grease. If I were younger I would change out the trans in the old Ariens and sell the Husky !!!!
@@wilburfinnigan2142 - I can relate to the spindle problem; my old Bolens had similar issues. Sounds like you have quite a bit of area to mow, but I bet its a beautiful place. Whatever you use in the long run, you have to enjoy using it. As far as tires go, one of mine stopped holding air again, but that's ok because I have an upgrade in mind... 😉 Stay tuned!

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana Received it Tuesday, 65 degrees after a week of single digits! I was surprised when I opened the crate it was fully assembled. I only had to hook up the battery. My nephew turned my shed into his welding shop and just squeezed it in there but had to remove my snow thrower. The plastic that covered the tractor had a drawstring and is perfect to cover the snow thrower. The plow arrived the day before and it's all assembled sitting outside on the pallet the tractor crate came with. @@BigfootDadExploresMontana Just got done plowing. About 6" on the ground the heavy wet stuff and it handled it beautifully. The only problem I couldn't go up a steep grass knoll then realized one of the tire chains fell off(my bad). I had to go up that to access my driveway and sidewalk because my gate is only 38" wide. I did leave the mowing deck in place for the added weight and had no trouble at all.
@CapeAnnImages - this is great news! How well did it start in the colder weather? We've been in the single digits here and snowing. Still shoveling by hand, but your experience sounds encouraging if we wanted to go that route.
Hey this was a fun twist to the normal videos of tractors lol I’m surprised you didn’t compare against Johnny as well I have pretty much the same size tractor but it has the green paint lol 🦌 It’s a basic little John Deere 102 42” deck but a Briggs 17 horse engine and the old 5 speed transmission (I don’t even see those on new tractors anymore lol) Got it about 9 years ago and it’s still going strong 💪 It has the grease fittings on the spindles thankfully, and 3 grease fittings on the front axle, but no oil filter on my base model lol. Definitely can’t complain though Other than some peeling paint on the rear fenders this Deere has been 100% trouble free! (Btw if you end up with a similar peeling paint problem, take care of it quickly and use farm implement paint. I did that about 3 years after getting the tractor when the factory powder coat started to peel and the implement paint has stood up amazing! (It was only the rear fenders that peeled, the frame, deck, etc don’t have that problem at all) I do wish I had a washout port but they are cheap and easy to add, so I think I will add one when I have to replace the deck belt...which knock on wood if never had to replace any belts yet. The only downside to that is the deck has never been off so when I do eventually have to remove it I foresee some rusty bolts in my future lol Good luck with your new Cub Cadet! Those are great too My dad had a 1960s Cub Cadet 70 for nearly 40 years! (They really don’t make them like that anymore, and to even get close to how heavy duty those were you have to spend around $2500 lol) Still hoping to find one, or the identical Cub Cadet 100, to restore. Did find one 2 months ago for $200, but was sold before I even got there lol Those old tractors were tanks! Let’s hope you get many years of faithful service out of your Cub as well! Take care! (P.s. Actually, I was convinced I was going to get a John Deere, but I quickly found that my feet were too big to comfortably work the forward/reverse pedals. So I started exploring the other two bands. Bigfoot Dad Explores Montana haha You’re welcome Loweslitta 😂 And ok, I don’t have the hydrostatic transmission, the only pedal I get is the brake/clutch pedal lol But I could imagine if the space between the pedals wasn’t enough that it would get annoying pretty quick Oh hey one other piece of advise if yours has grease fittings on the front axel too, get some really high quality grease for them. Some well in the know old timer farmers swear by the good stuff and to avoid the cheap brands of grease. Not sure what the difference is, but I’m pretty sure they learned that the hard way so that’s all I ever use (book says to grease them twice a year but I do it 3 times as I use the tractor for quite a bit more mowing than it was ever designed to mow lol I can’t afford the bigger tractors so I just take extra good care of this one) as so far everything is like brand new in the axel and steering. No rear grease fittings on mine (boo) How is the steering on your Cub? You showed a little in the video and looks to have a less play than the traditional style steering on these tractors. Take care!
I have a 2011 husquvarna YTH21K46 with the 21 horse kohler courage motor N 46 inch deck. That is one of the best mowers I’ve ever owned. It has been beat to heck and back and still fires up and cuts grass. My brand new 2017 craftsman 46” can’t even begin to compare with it, as it is so much better. Husquvarna is a well build machine, even if it’s not fully American lol
4/15/19, Without spending a fortune, this looks like the right size (42") for my 10K sq. ft yard. $1500-$2000. is about right. Does this have the bagger attachment? I could pick up leaves w/it. (Cub or Husk). Deere is sort of the Cadillac of tractors & costs more.
+Peterson Weiters Jr. - Yes, but you have to order it separately. There are two part numbers listed for the 42" and 46" options: 19a30030100 (Fast Attach Bagger for about $400) and 19a30031100 (Bagger for about $350). Hope that helps!
Preston Deere is all but the same tractor, JD Uses B/S engines even though it says JD and they also use the same Hydrostat trans !!!! So what is the difference ??? An expensive coat of green paint !!!
Cub cadet alot of people complain but they dont change the oil or do any maintance on them plus they leave them out in the rain and weather. Have had mine over four years no prob

Finally a lawn tractor review that wasn't made by some ill-informed slack jaw out there scalping the north 40! I found this to be both entertaining and informative. The production kind of reminded me of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" on the Food Network. You also touched on a lot of details others have missed, such as the Cub having a plastic hood. I mean, I already knew that going in, but maybe a lot of others didn't. Now thanks to your review, I just ordered a new Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro 46 in. with the 22 HP V-Twin Kohler Gas engine. I prefer a V-twin for the increased torque and smoothness and had great luck with my previous Briggs 24 HP V-twin. The rest of that Craftsman tractor went to shit but the engine starts right up and runs just as smooth as day one. Also, I went with a crated machine which will be delivered curbside instead of saving a few bucks to buy a display model and having to either pay for delivery or rent a trailer wide enough and bring it home myself. You never know what your gonna get buying a display model that sat for months out in front of the Home Depot, exposed to the elements and parts pilferers. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go watch this video again.

The older mowers I used to use had them as well and they always ran great even know the rest of the machine was falling apart. Smooth and powerful. I hope your machine arrives in good condition and serves you well! BTW, I’ve started another video on the Cub Cadet which you’ll probably enjoy. It arrived three days ahead of schedule so I was kind of unprepared. The shipper unloaded the crate and rolled it up the driveway for me, but I hadn't had time to create room for it in the garage. I spent the remainder of the day digging through countless layers of accumulated crap and clutter. My wife is gonna be so pissed when she realizes how much of her shit was sent to the landfill. Nevertheless, I found your uncrating and set-up advice to be spot on and indispensable. Once the protective cocoon was stripped away and assembly and adjustments were completed, I went crazy driving this little monster all over my yard doing wheelies and spinning donuts. Within days, I added a front bumper and a tow hitch in the back so I could drag my utility trailer around and bang into shit.
I'm on my second older Craftsman lawn tractor (2007 manufacture; my first was 2011 manufacture.) These were both made by Husqvarna, with B&S engines. The 2011 one has the 24hp V-twin, which is a beast. It's deck finally rusted out, so I picked up the 2007 one. I like them both but, in this case, assuming only a marginal price difference, I think I too would have bagged the Cub up and taken it home.

I bought a xt2 two yrs ago for snow blowing. Struggled all winter to start it. Checked valve clearances. Not even close out of the factory. They were all at .002-.003”. I mean, who the hell is assembling these things anyway? Reset valves and she started great all last winter.
Yeah worst piece of crap I ever bought, constant problems with Les than 10hours on it, lucky I fix it myself, will be for sale after 2 winters of light use, I would find it hard to trust that brand ever again
I was look at Cub Cadet but they seem to only have Chinese engines on those, its scary to buy EFI one. So I figured maybe husqvarna ts242xd is a better buy
Harrumph!! Safety? Convenience? I grew up in the day when the only safety features was your brain to keep you from hurting yourself. The only convenience features was it had a cushion on the seat, and you set the speed control by selecting the gear and engine speed from what you were doing. If you needed to back up, you had to put in the clutch and change to reverse. Grumble, grumble, grumble...
That's awesome to hear! Mine was abused before I bought it and was falling apart. The biggest bummer is that there was no tension on the belt and I spent more time replacing parts trying to figure out why. I think it had the wrong idler pulleys installed at some point because I changed about everything else under there (tensioner springs (those were also wrong but bought the correct two), belt, PTO engagement cable, spindles). I eventually gave up and just went and bought a new one. 😂
How has this mower held up since you've bought it? Did you end up changing the transaxle fluid in the K46? If so, was it difficult since they're considered non-serviceable?
Hi, Scott - I would love to have the Kawasaki engine. However, on the 42" model of the XT1, only the Kohler and the generic fuel-injected engines were available. This may have changed since then. The last Kawasaki I had was on a larger inverter-generator and it was awesome.
@@BigfootDadExploresMontana I did pick up the 42" with the Kawasaki from Home Depot-$100 less at store than the online price. Another 10% of as a vet which I didn't fight. So far so good though just 1 cut. Amazing turning radius! Now if it could only help me get rid of the mole infestation on my lawn. Guess I will try to kill the grubs first. Thanks for your efforts!!
Last week I bought a new 2018 model XT1 Enduro LT42 that had been sitting at Tractor Supply for a few years. Dead battery, never had gas in it, but got it a a huge discount. Had some scratches from sitting around, but it started and ran great. The only problems..one LED headlight went up in smoke and blew the fuse. Plus rodents had filled the engine with chewed up plastic sacks. No wiring damage. Took some time to work things out but it looks great. Battery was questionable having sat dead from the factory. An overnight trickle charge and it seems fine. I'm wondering if I should change the break in oil, it looks clean but has been sitting a while.

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana I bought this because it had the real Kohler engine and not the rebranded China Engine that CC uses now. Not saying there is anything wrong with them. But might be easier to get parts for an American engine that is widely used. I did change the oil and filter. It has 2 hours on it, mostly from me trying to get comfortable driving it.
Every time I start to want a new mower I watch reviews, read comments..... Then I turn the key on my old 1991 Craftsman for it's next beating, and mow the yard.
Yup, for the last 5 years I've thought the ole craftsman isn't gonna make it to winter this time. Something would go wrong while mowing I would flip it completely upside down smash it with a hammer a few good times flip it back and take off. I left it outside all winter long rain/snow below freezing temps just started it up first try and moved it to grarge to get it ready for the summer It was already heavely used, and beat up when I got it for free like 7 summers ago. Its is tuff as nails, at this point I'm just seeing if it will ever stop mowing.

I had to make a choice also I still have my Husqvarna 46 inch been good but bought a cub cadet lt1 50 with fabricated deck 24hp engine k 46 transmission from a dealer hopefully it'll be ok
Hi, Trevor - this was one of my main concerns when I was looking at all these potential mowers. I was so used to having a tractor mower locked at a certain speed that I was a bit uncomfortable with these hydrostatic transmissions. However, given my current yard, I needed to be able to switch from drive to reverse quickly and thinking back to all the tractor mowers I owned before, I wanted something a bit quicker/easier to shift. Surprisingly, it really isn't too uncomfortable to mow with a pedal. I do lock it into what they call "cruise" every once in a while and that does work, but I find myself wanting to change the pace so often that it's pretty infrequent that I use it on my hilly terrain. If I had a flat, expansive yard, having a traditional speed lever selector again would have been perfectly fine. I hope that helps a bit with the perspective of these newer style transmissions. If you have a chance, give it a try and test it out.
Keep in mind the brand tractor you buy in a big box store isn't the same as the one you buy from the dealer. Big box models have differences, such as plastic parts vs metal, or subtle design differences, all to meet a price point set by the retailer. Before you buy, compare the same model at both the big box store and the dealer. You'll pay more at the dealer but chances are it's better made, will last longer, and be easier on maintenance in the long run.

A big factor in my choice to buy a Cub Cadet vs a John Deere or a Husqvarna was the absence of levers on the left side. I prefer to mount and dismount on the left. The John Deere and Husky have levers on the left side of the seat that impede those procedures.
Hi, Donald - that makes complete sense. I've noticed, too, that the Cub Cadet tends to be thought out a bit better in a lot of areas compared to the competition. That was a major factor why I chose it in the end.

Jordan D, honestly it depends if you want tight turn you get cub if you want 4 season you get the Husqvarna (I prefer Husqvarna ride mowers over all most everything) but my grandfather have a zero turn zero cub and it good 2 but I think the Husqvarna is just better for mowing and do yard work and pulling things
I have a 12 year old Husqvarna YTH 22V46 with a Briggs and Stratton engine. I also have a 2.5 year old Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro with a Cub Cadet 547 cc EFI OHV Vertical Shaft Engine. The Husqvarna has broken down one time and that was a broken mandible. The Cub Cadet is in the shop now for the past 2 months being repaired for a wonderful 4th time, while the good old Husky continues to do her part mowing. After my experience with Cub Cadet……. I will never own another one.
Hi, mclary - Thank you for sharing this with the community - this is a positive thing to discuss what works and what doesn't from personal experience, so I, and others, appreciate this. I am very sorry yours is having issues - that is terrible considering it's newness and the price these cost now. I really hope they're able to mend it up for good, or that you can sell it and perhaps try a new Husqvarna. The Husqvarna are good machines, and perhaps they still remain a little tougher.
I have a Husky YTH22V46 and love it. I bought the 3 bag bagger with it and it works like a champ. I have a cart and haul branches and logs with it and that mower is the best one I’ve ever owned. Am going to get the snowblower attachment with the electric up and down switch which will save time when getting out in the nor’easters!
Hey Bigfoot, thanks for the video. Last season I blew the head gasket on my old Toro and was considering the Cub. Instead, I blew $600 fixing the Toro and I'm worse off than when I started. There's a Tractor supply shop in town, i think I'll get the Cub.

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana Mt neighbor told me to run the Toro until it burn out and get a new one...I should have listened. Rather then aggressive tire I put "Terra Grips" on my rear tires. They act like snow chains but it's strips of tire-like material instead of chain. I can climb up the wet grass like a billy goat. It rides rather rough though. Thanks for your help!
I'm curious how its holding up? Bought my first house with just over an acre of lawn and although its quite a bit more than 1500 bucks nowadays I think I might pull the trigger on this model Cub Cadet! Would love to hear your opinion after a coople years of ownership.
Hi, Maceken - So far, so good. It's on it's 5th season now, I believe (there was a bit of a lag when I posted this video). It still starts up great, just sips the gas, and never has given me any trouble. And after the ATV tire upgrade, I can traverse our sometimes muddy ground with ease. In hindsight, it was the perfect choice for us. Now I just have to get under there and really clean out the deck and sharpen or replace the blades again. Yes, I cannot believe the price increase in these units. Just to re-review it, I would like to purchase a new one, but at that price point, I'm having trouble justifying it since I already own one. Cub Cadet, if your'e out there, contact me and we'll work something out so I can do another set of videos dedicated to this machine! 😅
I’m on my 2nd season with the Cub Cadet. I got the LT48 with the plow blade. Like your idea of the ATV tire upgrade. Still have to use chains on the tires and a bucket of sand in the back for weight for plowing, and it really exceeds my expectations of what a small tractor is capable of.
Funny I have SC 500E cub cadet and have a HU800AWD Husqvarna too funny I like em both had cucadet for a while and is lighter and has same power with out awd husqvarna has awd and pulls funny with hand pulls my speed on Husqvarna is awesome but I have battery start no pull batter is the second replacement have to replace every season that sux they are not cheap

I watched many brands in many large and small stores. Finally, I chose and fell on Cub cadet xt2 PR95. In my opinion, this is the best tractor for the average user. It has many advantages with xt1 and xt3, and steering and steering knocks down the competition. I pick up my tractor next week from an authorized dealer and service technician of this equipment
1969OLEK - I think the XT2 is a wise decision. I still look at those models when I browse by them from time-to-time at the store. I think it's a huge step up. Others on here have noted the upgrades from the XT1 to the XT2 and, not surprisingly so, the XT2 is better quality from those upgrades. Even before he got to the cub cadet I knew which one he was going to choose. I have a Husqvarna I bought at a big box store 5 years ago that was returned. I read the complaints and corrected them in 15 minutes. Without looking I believe it is YT1846. Oh buy the way the price was $1000.00.

I'll give a bit of insight - I originally went to go pick up a John Deere, however, my feet were getting tangled up in the pedals, so I went home, researched, and decided on the Husqvarna. I don't remember why, but I had to run an errand to Home Depot and passed by the Cub Cadets and started comparing them to the Husqvarna, and thus the video began. I'll admit, I'm a fan of the Cub Cadet visual design, but have a keen eye on utility at the same time. You got a great deal on your Husqvarna. Is it still working alright?
I used a Husqvarna yth 150 for 21 yrs till the rear left side axle sheared off while mowing . So not wanting to put more money in that old of a mower I bought a 3 yr old Cub cadet xti 46 from a man who bought it new he had just bought a brand Husqvarna 48" don't know why but I bought it the cub for $700 been using it since put new belts an a battery changed all the fluids and filters does great it's fast to fast some time.

Idk i have a cub cadet since 2011 and minus minor issues its been flawless and smooth trans, just picked up a used 2018 husqvarna that's in good condidtion and the transmission pedals stick and get stuck
Is it recommend to use “no ethanol” gasoline in mowers and other lawn care equipment? Here in Texas some gas stations have an optional no ethanol gas pump and was wondering if that could extend the life of my mower, weedeater, etc.? I have the optional Fuel injected model with the standard cub cadet motor, I would’ve preferred the kohler but this seems to be working just fine, I currently have 16 hours on it is there a recommended oil change interval?
Hi, Caelan - I read your comment last week and was hoping someone more educated on the subject than I could answer. But I can tell you what I know from my perspective. The short and general answer is yes. Ethanol can be particularly troublesome for small engines for two reasons: 1) the ethanol is hard on the lines as typically small engines are not built with automotive-grade fuel components, thus can cause problems like premature degradation of the rubber lines, and 2) ethanol has a tendency to gel up in the carburetor if not cycled through enough (yes, I do see that you have the fuel-injected model, so someone more qualified may have to answer this part more thoroughly). Since small engines sometimes sit for longer periods of time before running again, unlike their bigger automotive cousins, this is why it's better to have a non-ethanol blend. For the Kohler, The first oil change is due at 5 hours. I cannot recall what the intervals are afterwards (although it is in the manual), but I don't put enough hours on mine for it to be a problem just to change it once a season. Thank you for the encouragement, Carlos!! Since you went out of the way to say this and share some of your own story, I'll share some of mine about this video. When I posted it, I didn't think it would get any views. I just wanted to share my buying journey and the questions I had so that it could possibly help others that I knew. I kinda got into it at the end, returned to both the big box stores, and shot the extra footage to try to add a little humor to the experience so it wasn't so dry. Turns out some love it, some not so much. 🤣 Since then (and after realizing that some people kinda share my same humor and analytical reviewing style from this video and a previous one with the scan tool) I've increased my production value and I think the videos are getting better. Please feel free to post back your experience when you decide on a mower. You may like the mower upgrade video I posted a couple weeks. Definitely buy the Husqvarna Is now produced by MTD and is no longer built very well Husqvarna has a thicker deck better supports better engine better frame better transmission and in general way better well I’m hoping you bought the Husqvarna haven’t watch the whole video Also look at the flimsy front end on that cub cadet it’s pretty much a joke Husqvarna comes with a solid cast iron front end way better built
What you need to be wear of the box store units maybe miss labeled I got a YTH in2015 that was in reality a YTA. It was a automatic transmission and junk for any hills. As a flat yard mower it was fine. We than moved to a property with hills and the transmission lasted one year than as you would crest the hill it would roll backwards than lock up when it locked it spun around and rolled. That was it by by Husqvarna.

Yes those engine side vents on the Husqvarna add a PIA step...WHAT? Just lift up and they come off. The main issue with the Cub Cadet for me is the Kohler engine. Will never buy one again as I had a bad experience with one on a John Deere lawn tractor.

Bigfoot Dad Explores Montana. The Kohler had many issues with the the carburetor. I owned it for 10 years and replaced carb twice. Just left a bad taste. Briggs and Stratton has never let me down. Aside from the engine the Cadet looks like a nice machine. By the way, very nice job on the video. Funny and high quality production.
@@Kennykoo65 - Thanks for the heads-up on the carb issues. I'm hoping they've made improvements over the years as this sounds like it's weak link, but time will tell. The engine can make or break the representational brand for these mowers. I used to have a Cub Cadet push mower years ago and the engine was so bad that I took it back... twice. I don't recall what it was, but it left a sour taste in my mouth for years. That was running through my head as I was checking these riders out. You covered all the features except for the most important of all. The type of hydrostatic transmission. Is it the dreaded K46 or the world renowned hydro gear? One will handle hills and the other will not.

@@suraush - You're welcome. Yes, my lawn is very hilly - some of them to the point where I cannot safely mow with a rider. The two mowers have the same transmission and the same forward and reverse pedal functionality. My yard is approximately one acre. Hope that helps!

Don’t forget about the old Sears SS16 mowers with the Onan engines. Have one that was bought new in 1978, has been well taken care of, and still looks/runs like new today. They were built using heavy steel, and the Onan engine is a little power house of an engine.
Hi, Kajler - I agree - Husqvarna makes a solid product! I had recently lost my enchantment with Briggs and Stratton from the last two engines I had - one on a push mower and one on a rototiller. Both had pretty bad quality issues. It seems they're not what they used to be.

For a comparison see the Craftsman T210, very similar to your chosen Cub Cadet, with 1 additional feature, the super tight turning ratio which is 5 degrees almost Zero turn territory ! I just bought my very first Craftsman lawn mower, the T210. Took her out last week and she performed flawlessly. Of course....not sure if it would holds up in the long haul. I'm hoping it will last a long time.
Yes get the CUB CADET it will not fail you I had one for 3 years and at that time I started a lawn business and put that xt1 to the dirt I put 751.7 hours on it then the transmission shredded It was a great mower *sniffing* After that I got a cub cadet pro z 960 l kw that was a big investment but totally worth it.

If you wouldn't mind measuring, or if you know, do you have a dimension for the distance between the steering wheel bottom and the back of the seat at the furthest back setting? I'm a big guy and the strores near me do not stock either mower, so i have no way of seeing one in person prior to purchase. Also, if by chance you have the bagger attachment, do you know the overall width including the bagger? I can see a dimension of 52" overall width on their website, I'm assuming that is with the chute down, but I'm curious if that dimension is similar with the bagger attachment on it also. It does seem a little sluggish in reverse, though, so unsure what that's about. Both the Cub Cadet and the Husqvarna have the same transmissions. @@BigfootDadExploresMontana my only concern is in a hefty fella (300+), and I have a long (gradual) hill in my cutting routine that has killed one K46 Hydrostatic Transmission on an older John Deere so I'm concerned about getting another lighter duty tractor.
My first hydrostatic drive mower was a Craftsman, with the control on the right-rear fender. I really got used to that. I'm a bit apprehensive to move on to a mower with a foot control. What do you think?
Hi, PlanetRockJesus - the mowers I used to use were all gear select on the right rear fender or hydrostatic with a control on the dash, and I too was apprehensive about the accelerator-style foot pedal. This was one of the reasons I went with the Cub Cadet because at that price point, it had cruise control. The pedal is comfortable and the resistance is loaded just right that my foot and leg do not tire through the entire session. As it turns out, I rarely use the cruise because the foot pedal is so comfortable and this is actually a better configuration for my lawn. My terrain is so varied that I'm constantly adjusting the speed and so far, this is working perfectly. I have another film on my channel about the 5-hour maintenance and comprehensive review. It has a section in there explaining the foot pedal, cruise control, and brake. Hope that helps! And welcome to the community!
@@BigfootDadExploresMontana After having the mower for a few weeks now, I must say that it didn't take much to adjust to the foot pedal. I can keep both hands on the wheel. I will, however, be taking the Cadet in for warranty adjustments when the season ends. The cruise control only seems to have three settings: it doesn't start right up as it should, even when I choke it from the start when the engine is cold; the throttle doesn't really respond to the rabbit to turtle thing at all; there are a couple bolts missing from under the seat. Etc, etc. But I do like this mower.
@@PlanetRockJesus - thanks for the follow-up! It sounds like there is definitely a few things that need to be warrantied. The missing seat bolts is normal, I only have two as well and others on here noticed the same thing with their mowers. But the other issues you mentioned need to be fixed. Recently mine has started backfiring when I throttle down - unsure what that is. But I'm afraid they won't warranty mine after what I did to it - that's coming up in the next video (still in progress)... 😅
@@BigfootDadExploresMontana I know. Mine backfires, too, but upon starting. That shouldn't happen. I only have one seat bolt on mine. I blame the lackeys at Home Depot who unboxed it and had to assemble it. They saved themselves a couple minutes so they could snatch a vape out the back door.
Yob - Thank you for the feedback! I agree - the CC30H is maneuverable and agile. With the right sized lawn, I would definitely choose this model. My grandfather used to have a Snapper rider that looked a lot like this. Many fond memories growing up and mowing the grass with that. And welcome - I'm glad you're here with us!

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana Exmark x-series are incredible. I'm a fleet mechanic for a national landscape company and the only mowers we use are exmark. They'll go for up to 4000 hours with just oil changes and hydro oil changes. If you dont abuse it like the guys who use our equipment, I can say you will have no issue for YEARS if you grease everything consistently.

I’d like to know how that engine holds up. That’s the first time I’ve seen the new KS series on a tractor and I’m curious to see if it’s as bad as the Kohler Courage Series it replaces. They’re supposed to be built better, but I’d like to know if their claims hold true. Additionally, if you want that K46 to survive, get the transaxle fluid changed at 50 hours, which is when it finishes breaking in, then every 200 hours thereafter. You have much better luck doing so compared to other people who own those. Also, try to run AMSOIL. It’s a very good synthetic oil. I’ve checked all the data sheets, and it is among the best available to consumers, making a balance of all the requirements a modern engine oil is held to. Also watch for rust, those MTDs are not made with the highest quality of paint. Take action as soon as it appears, and make sure to make use of that deck wash frequently. These are my opinions as a lawn mower mechanic whose been working on riding mowers for some time and researching info as well. Good luck.

I was wondering what mower you would recommend , or what brand you would recommend. I was thinking of getting this mower, but the one I want has the Fabricated Deck. I'm looking at a 48- 54" Deck. The one I'm seeing is a 50" Just curious what brand you prefer.
Greg Taylor Out of the other two brands? Not sure, both aren’t built very well. To be honest, if I were looking for a mower, I would definitely go with a John Deere X Series, and stay FAR away from the D and E Series John Deere’s.
Ashton good luck on changing the oil in that trans axle !!! It's sealed !!! And has to be taken out of the machine and taken apart to drain and refilled!!! Mine on the Arien, made by Husqvarna lasted 9 years behind a B/S 20 HP twin That was a nice mower but is no longer made. It was made by Husqvarna !!!

I’ve been waiting for my 30 year old craftsman to stop running but it started right up Sunday after another long winter break. Only thing I do is maintain the engine ( oil & plug) and occasionally replace belts and this year a couple front tires. I also super cleaned the deck and repaint it about every 3-5 years. I mow about 3/4 of an acre and bag endless amount of leaves every fall. Always add Startron to all your gasoline and the fuel lines and carburetor will never be a issue.

There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.
I've Had the Cub Cadet for a week[. The freight company damaged the seat and hood top, during shipping.. Cub Cadet stood behind the purchase; and, rectified the situation, by sending me replacement parts- which were easily installed.
These Cub Cadet Enduro mowers are awesome!! With it's powerful motor, incredibly tight turning radius, and over-all comfort, I'm loving this Cub Cadet!

4/15/19, I got 10K Sq. ft yard to do, this looks like the right size (42") machine. Does a bagger attachment come w/this? I figure it could pick up leaves as well.
I bought the Husqvarna LGT 2654 close to 10; years ago and it still runs and cuts like new.I service it every year, keep it out of the weather. It has most all the features you discussed, and also a Koehler engine.

I just purchased a Cub Cadet XT 1 46"deck 22 HP Kohler twin cylinder. It is like all the rest made or should I say put together in America but it uses foreign parts. I did a lot of research and found that it comes down to your personal choice of what you want and need from your tractor. My last mower had a Kohler and I had about 3000 hours on it and it was still going strong when I got rid of it so I went with the Kohler engine again. Do your homework before you buy and visit several shops like I did and talk to the people who work on the different models and hear what they say this is the best indication on what your going to purchase. In the end the bottom line is they aill only serve you in the manor they are taken care of. Happy shopping.

Love these reviews and everybody comment, the trouble is that most people are comparing this residential grade lawn mower to a commercial grade lawn mower that cost 2 to 4 times as much. That's like comparing apples to oranges.

Got me a. Cub 46”. Is so it again in a heartbeat after 2 yes of ownership. Great mower. Really rugged for what it is. I put Carlisle tractor tires on it and run it that way all the time. It has phenomenal traction to the ground now. I enjoy mowing my lawn.
Awesome. These are exactly the two mowers I have narrowed it down to. I was tending towards the Cub Cadet so when you chose it it settled it!

The Cub brand engines are made in China. The Cub has a weak reverse and doesn't seem to have the power in forward the Husqvarna does. My Cub has a Kohler which always was better than a Briggs. NOT now. The second season I used mine it smoked everytime I used it. I was informed the valve seals are junk in the Kohler. Find someone who has one and someone else who has the other mow a little with each then decide. My son bought the Husqvarna and it's a way better machine, so my new buy this year, Husqvarna of course . This has been my experience with the two, Hope this helps.
If it has a Kohler 7000 series engine it's not made in China its a USA engine..
I've had the XT1 LT46" for a year now. It has a 2 cyl 22HP B&S engine and I love it. It cuts a beautiful lawn, comfortable to ride and like you said, steers like butter.

I got the Husqvarna last year mode with it for a couple of weeks the quality of cut is terrible I then took it back and got my money back and picked up a cub the same day and the quality of cut is also terrible but I'm stuck with the cub as I can't spend my life taking mowers back
EVERY lawn mower should be considered "disposable" to some extent. It's just a matter of how much each will cost over whatever time period you own and operate the machine. You can spend $10,000 for a "professional" grade mower, yet have expensive repairs and replacements after the warranty expires. Conversely, you can buy a low-end, budget mower from a big box store for $1500 that has a 3-year warranty, and even if it blows an engine or trans in year 4, it's cost you $500 a year ($1500 divided by 3 yrs of warranty covered ownership). Sell it for parts for, say, $300 (tires, wheels hood, the mower deck--even the seat and steering wheel have resale value) at that point and you're down to $1200 as the cost of machinery to do your lawn for 3 years. IMO it's cheaper and less risky to buy a lower end model with a good warranty and expect nothing out of it beyond 3 years than to invest in a higher end model that you expect to get 8-10 years of good service out of--with only minor expenses. Another perspective is to determine what it would cost to have a lawn service do your lawn, and compare that to the cost of that mower. I know for $500 annually--at least in my area--that will get you 10-15 cuttings each season, which is about the extent of our growing season (Michigan).

We also did the math and came to the conclusion that we're ahead by buying, however, it's hard to put a price on personal time. Believe me, there are some days when I wonder if it'd be better to pay a professional yard service. But then when would I do all my thinking for new videos? 😅
Rockinroller I got 9 years out of my Arien 42" cut 20 HP twin cylinder B/S and the trans went south !!! Engine and everything else is still top notch and runs great, BUT rather than spend close to $1000 to replace trans I spent the extra $500 and bought that exact model YTH18542 Husqvarna....BUT I wish I had spent the extra $200 and got the twin cylinder engine, BUT here again it would have been a Kohlor engine. The new Husqvarna, first one was sent back, mower deck vibrated horribly, steering wheel 1/2 turn off center head lights didnot work !!!! Shame on Husqvarna for letting that machine out the door !!! Quality control ???? And shame on Lowes for not making sure it was ready to go, it was all assembled. That one went back !!! 2nd one mower deck was better but not smooth running !!! I removed and replaced the blades with a set of new Husqvarna blades that I had fine balanced, I do that to all blades, it ran better but not as good as the old Ariens, basically the same deck. The new Husqvarna deck seems to shudder and struggle through any grass with a little volume, you have to slow down so it will cut !!! and I do NOT like the foot pedal control. ackward compared to the old Ariens hand control. the machine is OK but I would spend a little more money and buy a little better machine next time !!!

And the new Husqvarna is not as good or user friendly as the older Ariens, which was made by Husqvarna, strange too they have the same deck and use the same blades, spindles, pulleys and belts, why I went with the Husky, plus all my spare parts I have !!! Those spindles do NOT like rocks !!!! If you hit a rock it breaks the mounting ears off the spindle. I keep a pair plus pulleys on hand and a set of blades because in the middle of mowing you hit a rock and break a spindle, in a short time you are back in business. I am not in the habit of mowing rocks but we live in a very rocky area and rocks "grow" out of the ground in the winter !! Freezing !!!! and tall grass hides them. I mow about 1 acre, fire break around the house and my small orchard and previous garden area. Arien was a great machine, only repair was spindles and I know why, tires are a problem keeping air in them, goat heads but tubes and slime eliminate that problem. and yearly service of oil/filter changes and some grease. If I were younger I would change out the trans in the old Ariens and sell the Husky !!!!
@@wilburfinnigan2142 - I can relate to the spindle problem; my old Bolens had similar issues. Sounds like you have quite a bit of area to mow, but I bet its a beautiful place. Whatever you use in the long run, you have to enjoy using it. As far as tires go, one of mine stopped holding air again, but that's ok because I have an upgrade in mind... 😉 Stay tuned!

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana Received it Tuesday, 65 degrees after a week of single digits! I was surprised when I opened the crate it was fully assembled. I only had to hook up the battery. My nephew turned my shed into his welding shop and just squeezed it in there but had to remove my snow thrower. The plastic that covered the tractor had a drawstring and is perfect to cover the snow thrower. The plow arrived the day before and it's all assembled sitting outside on the pallet the tractor crate came with. @@BigfootDadExploresMontana Just got done plowing. About 6" on the ground the heavy wet stuff and it handled it beautifully. The only problem I couldn't go up a steep grass knoll then realized one of the tire chains fell off(my bad). I had to go up that to access my driveway and sidewalk because my gate is only 38" wide. I did leave the mowing deck in place for the added weight and had no trouble at all.
@CapeAnnImages - this is great news! How well did it start in the colder weather? We've been in the single digits here and snowing. Still shoveling by hand, but your experience sounds encouraging if we wanted to go that route.

It’s a basic little John Deere 102
42” deck but a Briggs 17 horse engine and the old 5 speed transmission (I don’t even see those on new tractors anymore lol)
Got it about 9 years ago and it’s still going strong 💪
It has the grease fittings on the spindles thankfully, and 3 grease fittings on the front axle, but no oil filter on my base model lol.
Definitely can’t complain though
Other than some peeling paint on the rear fenders this Deere has been 100% trouble free! (Btw if you end up with a similar peeling paint problem, take care of it quickly and use farm implement paint. I did that about 3 years after getting the tractor when the factory powder coat started to peel and the implement paint has stood up amazing! (It was only the rear fenders that peeled, the frame, deck, etc don’t have that problem at all)
I do wish I had a washout port but they are cheap and easy to add, so I think I will add one when I have to replace the deck belt...which knock on wood if never had to replace any belts yet. The only downside to that is the deck has never been off so when I do eventually have to remove it I foresee some rusty bolts in my future lol

(They really don’t make them like that anymore, and to even get close to how heavy duty those were you have to spend around $2500 lol)

Oh hey one other piece of advise if yours has grease fittings on the front axel too, get some really high quality grease for them. Some well in the know old timer farmers swear by the good stuff and to avoid the cheap brands of grease. Not sure what the difference is, but I’m pretty sure they learned that the hard way so that’s all I ever use (book says to grease them twice a year but I do it 3 times as I use the tractor for quite a bit more mowing than it was ever designed to mow lol I can’t afford the bigger tractors so I just take extra good care of this one) as so far everything is like brand new in the axel and steering. No rear grease fittings on mine (boo)
How is the steering on your Cub? You showed a little in the video and looks to have a less play than the traditional style steering on these tractors.

I have a 2011 husquvarna YTH21K46 with the 21 horse kohler courage motor N 46 inch deck. That is one of the best mowers I’ve ever owned. It has been beat to heck and back and still fires up and cuts grass. My brand new 2017 craftsman 46” can’t even begin to compare with it, as it is so much better. Husquvarna is a well build machine, even if it’s not fully American lol
4/15/19, Without spending a fortune, this looks like the right size (42") for my 10K sq. ft yard. $1500-$2000. is about right. Does this have the bagger attachment? I could pick up leaves w/it. (Cub or Husk). Deere is sort of the Cadillac of tractors & costs more.
+Peterson Weiters Jr. - Yes, but you have to order it separately. There are two part numbers listed for the 42" and 46" options: 19a30030100 (Fast Attach Bagger for about $400) and 19a30031100 (Bagger for about $350). Hope that helps!
Preston Deere is all but the same tractor, JD Uses B/S engines even though it says JD and they also use the same Hydrostat trans !!!! So what is the difference ??? An expensive coat of green paint !!!
Can anyone tell me why cub stopped using the Kawasaki engine? Got over 400 on my ltx1050.
They still use them in the higher end tractors sold at Cub Cadet dealers, but not in the big box store versions.
I've got an XT2 LX46 with a Kawasaki.
They didn't stop but they have it in higher price because Kawasaki is superior than Kohler

Cub cadet alot of people complain but they dont change the oil or do any maintance on them plus they leave them out in the rain and weather. Have had mine over four years no prob

Finally a lawn tractor review that wasn't made by some ill-informed slack jaw out there scalping the north 40! I found this to be both entertaining and informative. The production kind of reminded me of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" on the Food Network. You also touched on a lot of details others have missed, such as the Cub having a plastic hood. I mean, I already knew that going in, but maybe a lot of others didn't. Now thanks to your review, I just ordered a new Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro 46 in. with the 22 HP V-Twin Kohler Gas engine. I prefer a V-twin for the increased torque and smoothness and had great luck with my previous Briggs 24 HP V-twin. The rest of that Craftsman tractor went to shit but the engine starts right up and runs just as smooth as day one. Also, I went with a crated machine which will be delivered curbside instead of saving a few bucks to buy a display model and having to either pay for delivery or rent a trailer wide enough and bring it home myself. You never know what your gonna get buying a display model that sat for months out in front of the Home Depot, exposed to the elements and parts pilferers. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go watch this video again.

The older mowers I used to use had them as well and they always ran great even know the rest of the machine was falling apart. Smooth and powerful. It arrived three days ahead of schedule so I was kind of unprepared. The shipper unloaded the crate and rolled it up the driveway for me, but I hadn't had time to create room for it in the garage. I spent the remainder of the day digging through countless layers of accumulated crap and clutter. My wife is gonna be so pissed when she realizes how much of her shit was sent to the landfill. Nevertheless, I found your uncrating and set-up advice to be spot on and indispensable. Once the protective cocoon was stripped away and assembly and adjustments were completed, I went crazy driving this little monster all over my yard doing wheelies and spinning donuts. Within days, I added a front bumper and a tow hitch in the back so I could drag my utility trailer around and bang into shit.

I'm on my second older Craftsman lawn tractor (2007 manufacture; my first was 2011 manufacture.) These were both made by Husqvarna, with B&S engines. The 2011 one has the 24hp V-twin, which is a beast. It's deck finally rusted out, so I picked up the 2007 one. I like them both but, in this case, assuming only a marginal price difference, I think I too would have bagged the Cub up and taken it home.

I bought a xt2 two yrs ago for snow blowing. Struggled all winter to start it. Checked valve clearances. Not even close out of the factory. They were all at .002-.003”. I mean, who the hell is assembling these things anyway? Reset valves and she started great all last winter.
Yeah worst piece of crap I ever bought, constant problems with Les than 10hours on it, lucky I fix it myself, will be for sale after 2 winters of light use, I would find it hard to trust that brand ever again
I was look at Cub Cadet but they seem to only have Chinese engines on those, its scary to buy EFI one. So I figured maybe husqvarna ts242xd is a better buy
Harrumph!! Safety? Convenience? I grew up in the day when the only safety features was your brain to keep you from hurting yourself. The only convenience features was it had a cushion on the seat, and you set the speed control by selecting the gear and engine speed from what you were doing. If you needed to back up, you had to put in the clutch and change to reverse. Grumble, grumble, grumble...

Hi, Eric - I can't argue with that! After owning the XT1 for a while and upgrading it a bit, I'd agree it's worth the extra to go to the XT2.

That's awesome to hear! Mine was abused before I bought it and was falling apart. The biggest bummer is that there was no tension on the belt and I spent more time replacing parts trying to figure out why. I think it had the wrong idler pulleys installed at some point because I changed about everything else under there (tensioner springs (those were also wrong but bought the correct two), belt, PTO engagement cable, spindles). I eventually gave up and just went and bought a new one. 😂
How has this mower held up since you've bought it? Did you end up changing the transaxle fluid in the K46? If so, was it difficult since they're considered non-serviceable?
I was at cub dealer today , fabricated deck k46 is on the lt 50 smaller ones stamped deck lt 200 transmission correct me if I'm wrong
Did you consider the XT1 with the Kawasaki instead of the Kohler engine? I have been hearing reviews leaning in favor of the Kawasaki.
Hi, Scott - I would love to have the Kawasaki engine. However, on the 42" model of the XT1, only the Kohler and the generic fuel-injected engines were available. This may have changed since then. The last Kawasaki I had was on a larger inverter-generator and it was awesome.
@@BigfootDadExploresMontana I did pick up the 42" with the Kawasaki from Home Depot-$100 less at store than the online price. Another 10% of as a vet which I didn't fight. So far so good though just 1 cut. Amazing turning radius! Now if it could only help me get rid of the mole infestation on my lawn. Guess I will try to kill the grubs first. Thanks for your efforts!!
Last week I bought a new 2018 model XT1 Enduro LT42 that had been sitting at Tractor Supply for a few years. Dead battery, never had gas in it, but got it a a huge discount. Had some scratches from sitting around, but it started and ran great. The only problems..one LED headlight went up in smoke and blew the fuse. Plus rodents had filled the engine with chewed up plastic sacks. No wiring damage. Took some time to work things out but it looks great. Battery was questionable having sat dead from the factory. An overnight trickle charge and it seems fine. I'm wondering if I should change the break in oil, it looks clean but has been sitting a while.
Hi, House Bill - thank you for sharing that - very interesting to hear. I am unsure about the break-in oil, although no doubt that it has probably wicked moisture in it from sitting that long. Maybe a quick call to Cub Cadet support may be in order. Hopefully it continues to work well for the upcoming season! There's always time for upgrades at this point.... 😎
@@BigfootDadExploresMontana I bought this because it had the real Kohler engine and not the rebranded China Engine that CC uses now. Not saying there is anything wrong with them. But might be easier to get parts for an American engine that is widely used. I did change the oil and filter. It has 2 hours on it, mostly from me trying to get comfortable driving it.
Every time I start to want a new mower I watch reviews, read comments..... Then I turn the key on my old 1991 Craftsman for it's next beating, and mow the yard.

Yup, for the last 5 years I've thought the ole craftsman isn't gonna make it to winter this time. Something would go wrong while mowing I would flip it completely upside down smash it with a hammer a few good times flip it back and take off. I left it outside all winter long rain/snow below freezing temps just started it up first try and moved it to grarge to get it ready for the summer
It was already heavely used, and beat up when I got it for free like 7 summers ago.
Its is tuff as nails, at this point I'm just seeing if it will ever stop mowing.

Yes, the price increase since then is crazy! Interestingly enough, our Home Depot and Ace were completely out of the Cub Cadets this weekend.

with the manual transmissions you never need to press down on a pedal, much easier to maintain a constant speed

I was so used to having a tractor mower locked at a certain speed that I was a bit uncomfortable with these hydrostatic transmissions. However, given my current yard, I needed to be able to switch from drive to reverse quickly and thinking back to all the tractor mowers I owned before, I wanted something a bit quicker/easier to shift. Surprisingly, it really isn't too uncomfortable to mow with a pedal. I do lock it into what they call "cruise" every once in a while and that does work, but I find myself wanting to change the pace so often that it's pretty infrequent that I use it on my hilly terrain. If I had a flat, expansive yard, having a traditional speed lever selector again would have been perfectly fine. I hope that helps a bit with the perspective of these newer style transmissions. If you have a chance, give it a try and test it out.
Keep in mind the brand tractor you buy in a big box store isn't the same as the one you buy from the dealer.
Big box models have differences, such as plastic parts vs metal, or subtle design differences, all to meet a price point set by the retailer.
Before you buy, compare the same model at both the big box store and the dealer. You'll pay more at the dealer but chances are it's better made, will last longer, and be easier on maintenance in the long run.

A big factor in my choice to buy a Cub Cadet vs a John Deere or a Husqvarna was the absence of levers on the left side. I prefer to mount and dismount on the left. The John Deere and Husky have levers on the left side of the seat that impede those procedures.
Hi, Donald - that makes complete sense. I've noticed, too, that the Cub Cadet tends to be thought out a bit better in a lot of areas compared to the competition. That was a major factor why I chose it in the end.
You should buy from your local dealer and not a big box store.
Shopping for a lawn mower is harder than it looks now judging that I have never actually bought I new mower I collect vintage mowers and restore them in my free time cub cadets are a good choice I like the magic voice at Home Depot lol good video

Jordan D, honestly it depends if you want tight turn you get cub if you want 4 season you get the Husqvarna (I prefer Husqvarna ride mowers over all most everything) but my grandfather have a zero turn zero cub and it good 2 but I think the Husqvarna is just better for mowing and do yard work and pulling things
I have a 12 year old Husqvarna YTH 22V46 with a Briggs and Stratton engine. I also have a 2.5 year old Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro with a Cub Cadet 547 cc EFI OHV Vertical Shaft Engine. The Husqvarna has broken down one time and that was a broken mandible. The Cub Cadet is in the shop now for the past 2 months being repaired for a wonderful 4th time, while the good old Husky continues to do her part mowing. After my experience with Cub Cadet……. I will never own another one.

I have a Husky YTH22V46 and love it. I bought the 3 bag bagger with it and it works like a champ. I have a cart and haul branches and logs with it and that mower is the best one I’ve ever owned. Am going to get the snowblower attachment with the electric up and down switch which will save time when getting out in the nor’easters!

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana Mt neighbor told me to run the Toro until it burn out and get a new one...I should have listened. Rather then aggressive tire I put "Terra Grips" on my rear tires. They act like snow chains but it's strips of tire-like material instead of chain. I can climb up the wet grass like a billy goat. It rides rather rough though. Thanks for your help!

Hi, Maceken - So far, so good. It's on it's 5th season now, I believe (there was a bit of a lag when I posted this video). It still starts up great, just sips the gas, and never has given me any trouble. And after the ATV tire upgrade, I can traverse our sometimes muddy ground with ease. In hindsight, it was the perfect choice for us. Now I just have to get under there and really clean out the deck and sharpen or replace the blades again.
Yes, I cannot believe the price increase in these units. Just to re-review it, I would like to purchase a new one, but at that price point, I'm having trouble justifying it since I already own one.

I’m on my 2nd season with the Cub Cadet. I got the LT48 with the plow blade. Like your idea of the ATV tire upgrade. Still have to use chains on the tires and a bucket of sand in the back for weight for plowing, and it really exceeds my expectations of what a small tractor is capable of.
Funny I have SC 500E cub cadet and have a HU800AWD Husqvarna too funny I like em both had cucadet for a while and is lighter and has same power with out awd husqvarna has awd and pulls funny with hand pulls my speed on Husqvarna is awesome but I have battery start no pull batter is the second replacement have to replace every season that sux they are not cheap

I wondered for a long time what tractor to buy. I watched many brands in many large and small stores. Finally, I chose and fell on Cub cadet xt2 PR95. In my opinion, this is the best tractor for the average user. It has many advantages with xt1 and xt3, and steering and steering knocks down the competition. I pick up my tractor next week from an authorized dealer and service technician of this equipment
1969OLEK - I think the XT2 is a wise decision. I still look at those models when I browse by them from time-to-time at the store. I think it's a huge step up. Others on here have noted the upgrades from the XT1 to the XT2 and, not surprisingly so, the XT2 is better quality from those upgrades. Even before he got to the cub cadet I knew which one he was going to choose. I have a Husqvarna I bought at a big box store 5 years ago that was returned. I read the complaints and corrected them in 15 minutes. Without looking I believe it is YT1846. Oh buy the way the price was $1000.00.

I'll give a bit of insight - I originally went to go pick up a John Deere, however, my feet were getting tangled up in the pedals, so I went home, researched, and decided on the Husqvarna. I don't remember why, but I had to run an errand to Home Depot and passed by the Cub Cadets and started comparing them to the Husqvarna, and thus the video began. I'll admit, I'm a fan of the Cub Cadet visual design, but have a keen eye on utility at the same time.

I just bought my first ride on, and it looks like your Cub Cadet. Then again, MTD makes them and mine (Craftsman).
I used a Husqvarna yth 150 for 21 yrs till the rear left side axle sheared off while mowing . So not wanting to put more money in that old of a mower I bought a 3 yr old Cub cadet xti 46 from a man who bought it new he had just bought a brand Husqvarna 48" don't know why but I bought it the cub for $700 been using it since put new belts an a battery changed all the fluids and filters does great it's fast to fast some time.

Idk i have a cub cadet since 2011 and minus minor issues its been flawless and smooth trans, just picked up a used 2018 husqvarna that's in good condidtion and the transmission pedals stick and get stuck
Check for the dirt or trash under the pedal and grease all connections that have metal on metal as there could be rust that’s causing the sticking

Is it recommend to use “no ethanol” gasoline in mowers and other lawn care equipment? Here in Texas some gas stations have an optional no ethanol gas pump and was wondering if that could extend the life of my mower, weedeater, etc.? I have the optional Fuel injected model with the standard cub cadet motor, I would’ve preferred the kohler but this seems to be working just fine, I currently have 16 hours on it is there a recommended oil change interval?
Hi, Caelan - I read your comment last week and was hoping someone more educated on the subject than I could answer. But I can tell you what I know from my perspective. The short and general answer is yes. Ethanol can be particularly troublesome for small engines for two reasons: 1) the ethanol is hard on the lines as typically small engines are not built with automotive-grade fuel components, thus can cause problems like premature degradation of the rubber lines, and 2) ethanol has a tendency to gel up in the carburetor if not cycled through enough (yes, I do see that you have the fuel-injected model, so someone more qualified may have to answer this part more thoroughly). Since small engines sometimes sit for longer periods of time before running again, unlike their bigger automotive cousins, this is why it's better to have a non-ethanol blend.
For the Kohler, The first oil change is due at 5 hours. I cannot recall what the intervals are afterwards (although it is in the manual), but I don't put enough hours on mine for it to be a problem just to change it once a season. I hope this helps and good luck!
+1. I never burn ethanol in any small engine. I buy the ethanol free for my gas cans. Best small engine warranty that one can buy. YMMV!

When I posted it, I didn't think it would get any views. I just wanted to share my buying journey and the questions I had so that it could possibly help others that I knew. I kinda got into it at the end, returned to both the big box stores, and shot the extra footage to try to add a little humor to the experience so it wasn't so dry. Turns out some love it, some not so much. 🤣 Since then (and after realizing that some people kinda share my same humor and analytical reviewing style from this video and a previous one with the scan tool) I've increased my production value and I think the videos are getting better. Please feel free to post back your experience when you decide on a mower. You may like the mower upgrade video I posted a couple weeks. Definitely buy the Husqvarna Is now produced by MTD and is no longer built very well Husqvarna has a thicker deck better supports better engine better frame better transmission and in general way better well I’m hoping you bought the Husqvarna haven’t watch the whole video Also look at the flimsy front end on that cub cadet it’s pretty much a joke Husqvarna comes with a solid cast iron front end way better built
What you need to be wear of the box store units maybe miss labeled I got a YTH in2015 that was in reality a YTA. It was a automatic transmission and junk for any hills. As a flat yard mower it was fine. We than moved to a property with hills and the transmission lasted one year than as you would crest the hill it would roll backwards than lock up when it locked it spun around and rolled. That was it by by Husqvarna.

Yes those engine side vents on the Husqvarna add a PIA step...WHAT? Just lift up and they come off. The main issue with the Cub Cadet for me is the Kohler engine. Will never buy one again as I had a bad experience with one on a John Deere lawn tractor.

Bigfoot Dad Explores Montana. The Kohler had many issues with the the carburetor. I owned it for 10 years and replaced carb twice. Just left a bad taste. Briggs and Stratton has never let me down. Aside from the engine the Cadet looks like a nice machine. By the way, very nice job on the video. Funny and high quality production.
@@Kennykoo65 - Thanks for the heads-up on the carb issues. I'm hoping they've made improvements over the years as this sounds like it's weak link, but time will tell. The engine can make or break the representational brand for these mowers. I used to have a Cub Cadet push mower years ago and the engine was so bad that I took it back... twice. I don't recall what it was, but it left a sour taste in my mouth for years. That was running through my head as I was checking these riders out. You covered all the features except for the most important of all. The type of hydrostatic transmission. Is it the dreaded K46 or the world renowned hydro gear? One will handle hills and the other will not.

Don’t forget about the old Sears SS16 mowers with the Onan engines. Have one that was bought new in 1978, has been well taken care of, and still looks/runs like new today. They were built using heavy steel, and the Onan engine is a little power house of an engine.
The Husqvarna is really nice and so is the cub cadet but the Briggs & Stratton Intek are known for blowing head gaskets
Hi, Kajler - I agree - Husqvarna makes a solid product! I had recently lost my enchantment with Briggs and Stratton from the last two engines I had - one on a push mower and one on a rototiller. Both had pretty bad quality issues. It seems they're not what they used to be.

For a comparison see the Craftsman T210, very similar to your chosen Cub Cadet, with 1 additional feature, the super tight turning ratio which is 5 degrees almost Zero turn territory !
I think that alone will tip in favor of the Craftsman T210, though I favor the Cub Cadet Yellow !

I just bought my very first Craftsman lawn mower, the T210. Took her out last week and she performed flawlessly. Of course....not sure if it would holds up in the long haul.

Yes get the CUB CADET it will not fail you I had one for 3 years and at that time I started a lawn business and put that xt1 to the dirt I put 751.7 hours on it then the transmission shredded It was a great mower *sniffing*
After that I got a cub cadet pro z 960 l kw that was a big investment but totally worth it.

subscribed, thanks for the great video. informative and certainly entertaining. I found it because I am currently deciding between these two models as well oddly enough. If you wouldn't mind measuring, or if you know, do you have a dimension for the distance between the steering wheel bottom and the back of the seat at the furthest back setting? I'm a big guy and the strores near me do not stock either mower, so i have no way of seeing one in person prior to purchase. Also, if by chance you have the bagger attachment, do you know the overall width including the bagger? I can see a dimension of 52" overall width on their website, I'm assuming that is with the chute down, but I'm curious if that dimension is similar with the bagger attachment on it also. Hi, PlanetRockJesus - the mowers I used to use were all gear select on the right rear fender or hydrostatic with a control on the dash, and I too was apprehensive about the accelerator-style foot pedal. This was one of the reasons I went with the Cub Cadet because at that price point, it had cruise control. The pedal is comfortable and the resistance is loaded just right that my foot and leg do not tire through the entire session. As it turns out, I rarely use the cruise because the foot pedal is so comfortable and this is actually a better configuration for my lawn. My terrain is so varied that I'm constantly adjusting the speed and so far, this is working perfectly.

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana After having the mower for a few weeks now, I must say that it didn't take much to adjust to the foot pedal. I can keep both hands on the wheel. I will, however, be taking the Cadet in for warranty adjustments when the season ends. The cruise control only seems to have three settings: it doesn't start right up as it should, even when I choke it from the start when the engine is cold; the throttle doesn't really respond to the rabbit to turtle thing at all; there are a couple bolts missing from under the seat. Etc, etc. But I do like this mower.
@@PlanetRockJesus - thanks for the follow-up! It sounds like there is definitely a few things that need to be warrantied. The missing seat bolts is normal, I only have two as well and others on here noticed the same thing with their mowers. But the other issues you mentioned need to be fixed.
Recently mine has started backfiring when I throttle down - unsure what that is. But I'm afraid they won't warranty mine after what I did to it - that's coming up in the next video (still in progress)... 😅
@@BigfootDadExploresMontana I know. Mine backfires, too, but upon starting. That shouldn't happen. I only have one seat bolt on mine. I blame the lackeys at Home Depot who unboxed it and had to assemble it. They saved themselves a couple minutes so they could snatch a vape out the back door.
@@PlanetRockJesus - I wonder if these can have the valves adjusted. Haven't looked into it yet, but that may be a similar issue we have.

Yob - Thank you for the feedback! I agree - the CC30H is maneuverable and agile. With the right sized lawn, I would definitely choose this model. My grandfather used to have a Snapper rider that looked a lot like this. Many fond memories growing up and mowing the grass with that. And welcome - I'm glad you're here with us!

Bigfoot Dad Explores Montana so far I love it. So much worth the extra money. The bolens lasted me 23 years and is still mowing with another owner. I feel the cubby is made well enough to last that long as well,

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana Exmark x-series are incredible. I'm a fleet mechanic for a national landscape company and the only mowers we use are exmark. They'll go for up to 4000 hours with just oil changes and hydro oil changes. If you dont abuse it like the guys who use our equipment, I can say you will have no issue for YEARS if you grease everything consistently.

its a old ass mower but over 50 years old and it still mows my yard, but good choice on your cub cadet bro, hope your still enjoying it
