Even if I don't use this (I will), I think it was worth making just because it looks neat. The dowel on the crank turned out to be unusable, since the crank it too small, but it works just fine turning it with my fingers.
You should tweak your design and then patent it and sell the design/build instructions. The hand-crank could possibly be a forth gear?
@Juan Cespedes hahahaha! That would have been golden.
Awesome remedy for an all too common problem! I agree about the dowel, a gear with finger spaces would be better and it will feel like you are turning the nut.
You could make a hole of the size of your finger right where the dowel is and use just one finger to turn the crank...
🤔 John l think we need a new table saw build with auto blade changer🤭😎🤣
I guess a remote nut spinner will do for now👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great idea. As a retired master machinist I was most impressed by the fact that you kept a very good involute curve on the gears. Impressive work, sir.
Deserves a trophy or special award just for the name: 'Gear Connected Table Saw Nut Spinner-Oner'. Great build, thanks for sharing!
It's generically known as a GeCoTaSaNS-1R, or Gecko.
Yea or GCTSNSO for short lol
And Offer
Eh. It sounded to much like one er. I had to read it a couple times before I realized it was on er
This is an absolute triumph. My jaw dropped when I first saw one of your videos that showed you using it, finally found this build video.
Good execution of an amazing idea!
my favourite thing is elaborate solutions to mild inconveniences.
How familiar ;)...
not a mild inconvenience when you lose the nut in the saw dust and spend ten minute looking for it, i love this tool, i may just have to make one
And that's how I became a Javascript developer.
@tgmforum rube goldberg is my idol
Yeah it almost feels like a Rube-Goldberg machine that fills a whole kitchen just to make toast.
Add a magnet to insure the nut will not fall out.
Omg! That was exactly what I was thinkng!
Actually add a magnet to the first metal tool and you avoid all this work.
But I can't deny it looks neat.
Also add a magnet to take the washer/collar off with the nut ?
Good idea!
That's a great idea John
Izzy! Thanks :)
Oooh I wish you'd done a classic Infomercial style video :D
"Is this you?!"
[drops nut on the floor over and over, followed by overly dramatic flailing of arms]
"You need the Nut Spinner-oner!"
:P
looks like VS TELESHOP 😂😂
exactly! maybe the arbor nut SPINNER 3000. only available on I build it TV.
Act today for only $19.99!
But wait... There's more!!
The Old goat loves your ideas, loves your rants, LOVES your choice of background music and it is all put together as a fun watch by your editing. Love this stuff.
Thank you!
I think for me the best part of this was watching you make this ingenious jig from all of the tools that you have made! Great work!
John, I will say genius.....the whole approach of "how can this be made better" and never settling is why you excel! Keep up the great work, brother.
I’ve watched you spend hours making all types of complicated tools for your shop. Who cares if it’s a waste of time to anyone else? You obviously enjoy the process and we enjoy watching your enjoyment!
The question is not, “should you” the question is, “can you?” You can, so you should!
The question should be "Why would you?" lol.
There are a lot of things you can do but shouldn't.
There are a lot of things you think you can do. But do you .then you don’t do you .
@@OldDunollieman why wouldn't you
Genius!! Every table saw should have one of these gear connected table saw nut spinner-oners!
You had me at "nut spinner". Every guy needs at least one. And bonus--it's a *geared* nut spinner!
Awesome tool, and amazing guy who invented it! 👍
Cool. I miss the days when Mathias would make a competing version. Taunt him !! Thanks for all you do.
Taunt him!
Please Mathias, make one with 5 gears!!
@@ChrisUhlik Yes and from Lego with a raspberry pi attached...
Mathias, should make one with metric measurements! lol
Mathias would make one with an interchangeable primary gear and provide a handy spreadsheet of gear ratios and their respective speeds and torques.
That's a really creative answer to a frustrating mechanical problem. Well done sir.
Love the infomercial style motivation. Thanks for sharing John and entertaining us.
Man.... You're awesome! I'm only 17 and it's a passion to work in my workshop and be inspired by you. John, you're rock! Be blessed for what you're doing!
That was pretty cool!
I love over-engineered solutions to simple problems. It's fun - not a waste of time at all!
As a teen, I would like to do something like this in my life.
Same here
I love that most of your tools are made of wood. It is so cool. Thanks for the video!
Im so happy you made this by hand instead of 3D printing parts, offering the plans for sale and cnc cutting it out with your new $10k machine from sponsor XYZ. Lol
Hell yes. Nothing more annoying than to watch a video of something you can't reproduce without that expensive equipment no one owns.
That definitely was not a waste of time. That Tool is awesome. I will attempt to make one. Thanks for the video John. Thumbs Up.
"Waste of time"?? Far from it! That's a great idea, beautifully implemented.
Looks really cool and you enjoyed making it, that's all that maters.
That ibuildit cnc was pretty accurate on those gears!
Some people have so much time on their hands! Seriously, a simple magnet and you're sorted.
Best tool name ever. Fun and interesting solution.
There are some VERY smart people on RUclips. You’re obviously one of them.
Imagine how many of our everyday conveniences was in part due to somebody being peeved by a minor thing. I always try to find a solution to the most minor annoyances, so good job!
genius
This is a great idea - LONG overdue from the industry. Great work, thank you for the inspiration!
"Was This Genius, Or A Waste Of My Time?" Yes. Yes it was.
Andy McKenzie
Give the guy kudos for creativity and if he enjoyed making his contraption, then why the hell not? Beats sitting in front of the TV and watching commercial re-runs all day.
Exactly! LOL
Umm it's called a quick wrench.. they sell them at home Depot.. in multiple sizes
@@alcamerc9970 i think the joke is that it was both.
Yes, it was a genius, lol.
Absolutely genious...Out of this world craftsmanship..Even vise idea was equally great and 100% useful...Thanks for sharing man...Love you
I was expecting you to cut your new contraption in half during that last scene.
Hey John, I’m always lookin for your new vids. You’ve been a great help in my own projects. Your vids are easy to watch and still great to show them to my wife and friends who are always impressed that most tools you use are made by you. Keep up the great work brotha!
I ordered a bin of 1000 nuts so if I drop one I just put another on. I ran out of nuts in a week. I think this was a better idea.
Have you considered building some sort of conveyor mechanism to return the dropped nuts into a feeder bin?
Jason Kotolski i fucking hate when boomers cant tell what a joke is
@@topkek7003 Whats a boomer Waaf waf
The video and the device are great. And the 61/2 minutes are not a loss in the scope of times I have wasted on things of much less value. Thank you.
It’s a good idea, threading the nut is a frustrating operation, and when I drop mine it gets buried in a pile of saw dust
What a bloody clever man .. brilliant idea and amazing workmanship..
Genius, but I want to see a version that uses a rubber belt and two pulleys, one that uses a wooden worm-screw drive, and one that uses a wooden chain drive!
Or... a harmonic drive 😏
And a motor with a 12 AMP battery hookup and UPS charging!
Oh I'm glad I found this video. I've seen this "wrench" in some of your recent videos and been going to ask about it, but this explains it. Thanks.
Brilliant!
John I had a lot of fun making this. I had to improvise. I have no idea how you routed out the housing for the gears freehand - beyond my capabilities. I ended up using a 2-5/8" hole saw first and my gears were 2-1/2" so they fit nicely inside. I still found it difficult to see where I was routing because I couldn't get enough light down there as I got to 1/2" deep. I also opted not to freehand route the two integrated axles. Instead, I cheated and used 1/2" dowel. Great gadget and I drew a few conclusions about you as I was going the the tedious process of cutting gear teeth: you must be very wealthy to have so much time on your hands to make this. It took me a week puttering around in the evenings when I got home. Keep up the good work.
Genius. My 12" table saw has a solid bottom for the vacuum system. Drop the blade nut, dismantle saw bottom to retrieve.
Magnetic pickup tool. 10 second solution. It can be as simple as a magnet taped or glued to a scrap of wood.
@@Bikeeast If you can see the nut or there is sufficient space to angle the magnet. I will go with the fun solution.
Same here!
You’d think it would have an air tight inspection hatch to get in it, without dismantling it 🤨
My thoughts exactly
Absolutely love it. Wonderfully over-engineered
I find if I raise the arbor all the way up, the nut is a lot easier to reach.
David Walling
If I raise mine all the way up it’s no problem what so ever for me to get to it.
Larry, that’s what she said.
@david walling: That'd be cheating. 😉
a magnetized ratchet wrench work so well. A piece of tape on the back side of the nut on a box and works really well too. As does putting the nut between your index and ring finger and rotating the motor shaft with the other wrench behind the blade.
Fine presentation, Rube! This is just what a fumble-fingers needs! What got me was - when I glued up the two halves of the crank it became one with the main handle. Not doing this all over again, but it can hang over there in the corner by all my other "almost tools."
And it was GREAT to show off your fine, similarly designed vice! Still debating whether I should try THAT one.
Something to keep out while mulling something over at the bench when there's no pencil to twirl.
I've seen this sat on your fence for ages and often wondered what it was, what a great solution, and it looks really smart.
This would be perfect for the CNC to mass produce! I'd buy a fully assembled one or even the parts to assemble my own.
That's a great idea John and the final tool is another one of your impeccable projects. I lost the nut for my saw one time and spent a fair amount of time digging through a pile of saw dust to find it. From that time on I used a simple trick to avoid that happening again. I place the nut over the tip of my forefinger and then place the finger directly over the end of the threaded shaft. I then spin the nut on the shaft using my thumb and middle finger. I never take my forefinger away from the end of the shaft until the nut is on the shaft it full thickness. I take the nut off using the same thing in reverse. I hate it in the winter time when the saw is ice cold but hey, I don't lose the nut anymore. Still, I like your multi gear arrangement.
Right on John! When can we expect the plans for that great table saw of yours?
Thanks, I'll be working on the plans soon, but it's a big one and it'll take time.
@@JohnHeisz That's what she said.
Man just awesome how you saw a problem and solved it in a genius like and deliciously complicated manor!!! My respect to you sir👊
The Heisz Thinhand ®️ New, from Ronco
"Johnco"
Miles Parris Haha, I thought of that after I posted. But was channeling Ron Popiele
@@Traderjoe Are you referring to the Ron Popiele world famous electric food dehydrator, the GLH, and the "set it and forget it" Showtime rotisserie and barbecue?
I can't even hate the guy. He's made a fortune. And the Ronco dehydrator still works like 30 years later for my beef jerky.
@@MrClarkisgod I got a "Pocket Fisherman" vibe when he cranked it.
What an ingenious solution. Good job sir.
Just a shame people can't press the like button more than once
love seeing random ideas like this come to life.
Brilliant!! I am curious if you’ve ever tried stacking the gears when cutting and sanding to save time? Not a suggestion, just a question. I have learned so many things from you and your channels, and for that I thank you!
The enjoyment you can get from making these sorts of elaborate wooden devices makes them worth creating. woodworking is about the enjoyment for some people.
Needed another gearwheel in the sequence so that the nut turned the same way as the handle !
pmailkeey
Actually, he needed to reduce one gear, the result is better handling, and nut direction of turn. Thumbs up!
@@alcamerc9970 That's an option but I was concerned length may have been reduced too much to work as well.
Neat gadget though !
John, you are known for coming up with innovative, practical and relatively simple ideas for your jigs. A case in point is your 'Ultimate Box Joint Jig'. But this time, for the Table Saw Nut Spinner, you have deviated a bit and made it fairly complex.
Possibly, it was just a fun project for you. As always, it was enjoyable to watch you build it.
I say add 2 small magnets to keep the nut from falling out when the fit isn't as tight anymore.
I could watch your videos all day, so well made and that craftsmanship is mmmmmmm
Wonder if just epoxying a magnet to the outside of a box end of a wrench would work.
You may not even need to epoxy it, I stick neodymium magnets on my needlenose pliers for handling ball bearings.
That throws up the challenge of making wooden magnets. Wood... because you know why!
This is genius. I'm with you on dropping the nut on my older saw. My new one has a way to drop one side down but I sometimes have to use them both on a project so this will come in handy. Thank you!
But now you‘ll be swearing everytime when you‘re using it, because it turns in the wrong direction. :)
I was thinking the same thing. Why didn't he make an odd number of gears?
I think they need to be made in pairs on - off, lefthanded and righthanded, up - down, in - out and special shake it all about one for high days and holidays 😎
@@Akniy Righty loosey or was that lefty tighty? Humm?
Why shoud he change the direction? Astronomers have been contented for centuries seeing the moon upside down in their telescopes. And Nobel prizes have come out of it.
@@NICEFINENEWROBOT Roger that!
Totally worth it.
Well done Mr. Heinz.
I am seriously underwhelmed. I was expecting a "Clap on, Clap off" like solution John. At the very least add a battery operated motor with a switch!
Pistol grip throttle, lots a power, reversible! ERRR!
A brilliant solution to a problem you shouldnt have.. Love it
To answer your question: Yes.
Very nice. I made something similar about a year ago. I took one of those ratchets where you can turn the handle to rotate the lower thing and welded a shortened socket on it. Your solution looks even less bulky.
I say, “GENIUS”!
Just for the record for us old timers out there. And I don’t create a lot of videos but perhaps you as a young fellow my understand the advantage of magnetizing the nut and washer. A simple process
MrRoverpilot
I used a table saw for decades, I don’t remember I dropped the nut once, I never even thought about it, but if I did, I would have gotten on the floor to get it. What could be simpler than that? LOL!
Something Ron Popeil-ish about it!
But wait! There’s more (tm)!
Very clever. Good idea. Congratulations
You could have used a ratchet wrench/spanner
Absolutely necessary. Great idea.
I vote “genius”
Definitely genius. Any tool that solves a problem and improves efficiency and quality of life is always worth the time. Also liked how the video more or less showcased the majority of the custom stuff you've made and how it all works well.
If this was a waste of your time then I’d like see what you’d consider to not be!! 🤣
Absolutely brilliant John. Bravo !!
This is such a useless waste of time. Lol. I love it.
genius. and visually appealing. your work is inspiring!
Waste of time, Just hold the nut and turn the saw on, Lol just kidding please no one try this.
I do that with my rotary tool. It's only, like 18,000 RPM. No biggie.
Brilliant. All table saws should have one of these. 👍
Brilliant!!! I was just struggling with that issue today.
Inspiring work. What a beautiful tool
I was suggested a video by you where you used it, and I liked it! so I had to find the video where you make it. I'm here for that. :)
Waste of time or genius? I don't know but I loved this. I loved the concept, the construction, the filming and the music! Thank you.
This is a very slick idea. Love it!
You are a genius 👍🏻 Awesome idea and build. Thank you from Denmark.
This was so satisfying to watch. Thank you so much.
I definitely don’t need one of these, but I absolutely want one. Good job!
Hello John,
It's fascinating to see what great ideas you come up with and how well you put them into practice. Your craftsmanship, especially the freehand handling of the router, and the presentation, short and informative, have also impressed me in this video. Thumbs up!

Great little tool John...Your the greatest!!!
That is a great way to solve a common problem. Way to go.
You're a genius. I knew that long time ago but you never cease to surprise me.
