Wasn't the whole point of the fifth element, love? Like... Leeloo and Corbin compliment each other, like a man and a woman should. It makes sense she would need him, just as much as he needs her. He finds purpose and strength in her. As for the other women, ah, whatever, it's not supposed to be taken so seriously.
The entire movie is heavily male cast, but it portrays the patriarchy and most males as somewhat incompetent. The nagging ex wife and mother are clearly there to provide comedy and show that Korben is basically a good guy who still talks to his mother and ex wife. Leeloo is literally the perfect human being and she's a woman. And like you said, the entire point of the movie is that they needed each other. Calling this movie misogynistic is a wild leap and completely misses the entire point of the movie.
The analysis of how the women were portrayed in a sexist light is assinine. You want every female character to be portrayed as perfect? Women are just as flawed as men. The men weren't portrayed great either. Ridiculous.
Totaly Agree !! The problem is that the narrator has the mentality of the new and terrible idea of the "strong female character", who cannot have defects or weaknesses. In essence, bad, poorly written characters that ruin modern movies.
Glad I read comments before posting, I was going to say the same thing. "Modern" movies are suffering from the "perfect girlboss" disease and those characters are so not interesting. What you said! Also, what's wrong with a woman needing a man's help from time to time?
Prince coulda really revived his insane fame apex had he agreed to do The Fifth Element. I can only begin to grasp the vision that woulda been. That said, Chris Tucker really made Ruby Rhod his own. It's hard to imagine anyone else (Even Prince) knocking it this far outta the field. However much I wish Prince had put his own pride aside for this one role, I'm glad Chris Tucker was able to step up and transform a relatively small role into the epic icon he came to be.
5th element was a masterpiece. LILU was bad a$$. But the problem to looper is she wasn't strong woman enough? Bet looper was a fan of captain Marvel cause she don't need no man.
Water falls, fire burns... LIFE LOVES. That's literally the message, so no she wasn't 'needing to be rescued' it was a powerful message about the nature of humanity and life. I was thinking this would be about the little gaffs and issues that were visible but obviously not - and you missed the point of the movie. Here's a detail YOU missed as a youtube creator group: The four elements are symbolized as wavy and straight lines on their pillars. The FIFTH ELEMENT, the LITERAL name of the movie, combines those lines and curves into DNA which is prominently shown to us during Leeloos reconstruction sequence. Life. is the fifth element. And what does it do? It loves.
It's funny how you said the movie doesn't hold up when it comes to the stereotypes after you made a statement about the future of world it takes place in as dystopic.
Trying to find fault when there is none I have watch this movie number of times and enjoyed it every time stop trying to but things in minds that aren’t there.
I would say the narrator Doesn't know a multi-pass from his.... misogynistic? come on?! Stating facts and interesting tidbits is great but inserting some kind of woke CRT take on it is more cringe worthy than anything in the movie. Somebody has to be the person in distress otherwise what is the point of the movie or any other action movie.
That's not true. Lelu? She was learning the ENTIRE HUMAN HISTORY from the internet. That would include EVERY martial arts style that the internet has access to. And she LITERALLY started with the letter A. Al the way through W when she discovers "war." Think about this. The priest literally tells Dalls "she's learning about human history" THAT, is also when she becomes fluent in English. Like, the first half of the movie. So no, it's not a surprise whatsoever that she's a skilled fighter. I say skilled, but she had access to EVER fighting technique imaginable, so long as it was on the internet in the movies world. 🤷♂️
Totaly Agree !! The problem is that the narrator has the mentality of the new and terrible idea of the "strong female character", who cannot have defects or weaknesses. In essence, bad, poorly written characters that ruin modern movies.
Agreed! As a woman, I never felt betrayed by Leeloo. Korben Dallas supported her on HER quest, not his own. His mother and ex-wife made it clear he wasn't all that reliable before he met Leeloo. Leeloo is a perfect being whose quest redeemed Korben as an imperfect being. HUMILITY & LOVE purify Dallas. He saves Leeloo as much as she saves humanity. That's the opposite of sexism. Also, the only reason Leeloo is clothed at all is because of our draconian rating system. The first third of the film should be nekkid Leeloo oblivious to the need for clothes, but US censors can't handle that, so here we are, like 25 years later, still worrying about, uh, uhm, Leeloo might catch cold? I don't understand the concern about her body in this movie. The story justifies her uncovered body being bandaged. It's NOT "sexist" if you understand the world building.
Totaly Agree !! The problem is that the narrator has the mentality of the new and terrible idea of the "strong female character", who cannot have defects or weaknesses. In essence, bad, poorly written characters that ruin modern movies.
Couldn't agree more. I really liked this video and the points he brought up earlier in it. The last couple of minutes of it however ruined it for me. Misogynistic, cringe worthy depictions... Come on! Seriously? It was put in there to be funny and most people can relate. If you read more into it than this and are truly bent out of shape over it, I feel badly for you. While entitled to your own opinions, it's this attitude that is turning our society in to a bunch of victims and spineless pu$*ies. Sorry. That's my opinion.
As a woman, *I was INSPIRED BY LEELOO, not offended!* I saw The 5th Element in the original theatrical release, which feels good to say in the age of Netflix and digital streaming. It was meant for the silver screen, not home theater, but a massive screen and surround-sound at the very least. At that time of Blockbuster Video, this movie was about a badass woman supported by a badass dude who helped her get where she needed to be. This video conveiently omitted that part where Leeloo insists on consent and permission before touching. LOVE was the theme. Every time Leeloo fought to the brink of exhaustion, Korben Dallas took her to the finish line for HER cause, not his own. After the conversations with his mother and ex-wife, it was clear that Korben was kind of a loser before Leeloo made him feel important. Back in the late 1990s, way back before the 2001's 9/11 tragedy, it was a time when the subject of "quintessential" love still had a place in modern pop-philosophy, and it was okay to discuss romantic love as an essential need for most of us humans. TLDR: As a cis female, I never felt undermined by Leeloo, only empowered.
I would disagree with the narrator's opinion that those scenes in Fifth Element were misogynistic. Misogyny by definition is a hatred towards women. And what is wrong with a woman who is a badass hero suddenly getting overtaken with emotion and vulnerability? The same social norms and cliches would have a guy who was an action hero but showed emotions and became vulnerable, people would start to question his sexuality. You get what I'm talking about? It wasn't misogynistic because there was nothing hateful about making a woman the savior of the world
Yeah was just coming to say this. He gets a call 3 times from his mother, and the first time it's while he's talking about his ex-wife leaving him for a lawyer, but that's it
Are you f’ing kidding me!?! A movie from 25 yrs ago is problematic? This whole line of thinking is so stupid, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Go see a musical or something. Oh wait, I’m sure West Side Story and Grease are problematic too…. Wtf?
At the opening Corben Dallas scene, the thief, with the “very nice hat”, who tries to rob Corben, is also on Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, also by Luc Besson. On Valerian, Laureline (Cara Delevigne) also tells thief guy “nice hat” when she first meets him on the bus scene. I don’t know if they’re the same character, but both are played by the same actor Mathieu Kassovitz
I think you 'missed' a couple: Leeloo is said to be 'perfect'. So, what is the hair color for a 'perfect' woman? Red, with blond roots. And the Diva who sings an impossible song, literally 'has pipes'. A phrase that is usually reserved for singers that can belt out songs in a wide range of notes.
Why did you have to wreck the clip in the last few mins with the crap??? It's a movie.. Put your pitchfork down and enjoy it for what it is.....entertainment
To cast shame on some of the less flattering scenes is short sighted at best though the phone scenes may to some people seem sexist they portray a realistic view of interpersonal relationships.
was gonna give your video a thumbs up until you decided to show you have no idea what the movie is actually about with that last 2 minutes of video...try again.
The blue singing Dolphin/Human Lady scared the Hell out of me as a kid, when me and my family went to the movies to see this film on the Big screen, back in 1997 🌌🏟🎶🎤😩🐬👀😨😅😅💯💯
Here's another, "Ruby rhod"'s first name is "rubidium", it's the fifth element on the left column down on the periodic table, so Ruby is ALSO a "fifth element"! 😂 (last name Rhodium is an element, too!)
I love this movie! Plot, characters, action. Chris Tucker is fantastic as Ruby Rodd! 😁Gary is fantastic villain. Mila speaks several languages. Mix,english, russian, german and serbian. When Bruce is driving erratically she clearly says"ne talasaj!"(don't make waves). To call this movie misogynist is extremely stupid. Main theme of the movie is love. Pure love. Korbin and Leeloo. Friendship, love, hooe. Those are themes.
I don't have a problem with damsel in distress, just don't expect fans to like an 11 stone female taking on a man of 16 - 18 stones in a fight The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Double Jeapordy, Terminator, Strange Days,The Punisher 1989 depicted women very well.
Long Kiss Goodnight is another movie I've watched multiple times. Definitely her best role. I'll never forget when she was tied to the water wheel and transformed back into the killer. Fantastic!
I have almost zero comments on RUclips. However, as this is one of my favorites, and watched it so many times i can barely count, I object to the statement that the movie has misogynistic tropes. The whole point of the movie was that Corben and Leeloo needed each other. Of course she needed saving, even though she is "perfect". There is no perfect in this world, so much than even a perfect being living among us will also fall victim of the imperfections of our race. And that's ok. But we need each other that was the point of the movie and it was hardly misogynistic.

Looper, you missed the point if you think Leeloo was portrayed as any sort of "misogynist stereotype". This whole movie was literal godess worship, showing that for all the power a woman might have, a simple act of love is the most powerful thing. It's almost like you didn't watch the movie at all.
