- The Eiger is an individualized summit of the Alps located entirely in Switzerland in the Bernese Alps massif. Its name, attested in 1252, does not mean "ogre", contrary to popular belief, but more probably "big spear". The confusion is due to the climbers who died during the ascent of the north face: this one, almost totally vertical or overhanging, is considered to be the most impressive and the most famous face of the Alps, if not the highest. Along with the north faces of the Matterhorn and the Grandes Jorasses, it has constituted one of the “three last problems of the Alps” for mountaineering, and the last solved.

In my opinion, one of the best videos of climbing the north face. One contributing factor to this is you avoided music. You let the mountain speak. Congratulations on your climb.

That's incredible video!!!! The best I've seen about Eiger north face!!!! With these images I've understand how much difficult is this mountain face!!!!! I'm thinking too about which mountaineers of the past how capable were!!! with old materials!! and I'm thinking how this mountain must be difficult with bad weather!!!! and towards the end, after minute 12, that falls of rock and snow... it like the mountain is some sort of wicked monster and its trying to scare you out of the summit... or reminding you that you guys didn't have any incidences just because she felt like giving you a good day... this Eiger is amazingly scary,grim, unpleasant looking, even if I had the skills I don't think I would enjoy a climb like this. Thanks very much for such amazing videos that really make you feel the ambience of the wall

C'est évidemment la voie Heckmair, ouverte en 1938, mais ce n'est pas du tout la même voie.
Jusqu'en 1980 environ, c'est à dire avant l'invention des piolets spéciaux pour cascades de glace, ceux qui s'attaquaient à l'Eiger attendaient que la montagne soit à peu près libérée de sa gangue de glace et l'escalade se faisait en chaussures.
Maintenant, c'est tout en crampons avec les deux piolets pour s'ancrer sur la glace, les mauvaises prises mal disposées qui rendaient l'escalade si difficile ont été oubliées.
Il y a aussi plein de cordes fixes, vestiges sans doute d'ascensions en mauvaises conditions. Si laisser une corde dans la traversée Hinterstoisser permit à Mathias Rebitsch et Ludwig Vörg de revenir vivants en 37, leurs prédécesseurs de 36 ne purent pas revenir, Hinterstoisser, Rainer et Angerer se tuèrent et Toni Kurz mourut d'épuisement à portée de main des sauveteurs.
Il y a d'autres cordes dans la Rampe, en mauvais état, tout cela pollue la montagne et il ne serait pas absurde de les enlever.
Nous avons maintenant des prévisions météo fiables et l'Eiger a perdu une grande partie de ses dangers, les sorties "à l'arrache" d'Andreas Heckmair ou de Hermann Bühl sont du domaine de l'Histoire.
Rappelons-nous aussi que lors de la Première Heinrich Harrer n'avait pas de crampons, juste des chaussures à clous. Ce dut être assez dantesque.
J'ai apprécié le passage au bivouac Corti. Claudio Corti et Stafano Longhi y étaient restés bloqués dans le mauvais temps, une expédition tenta d'aller les chercher et Corti put être sauvé, remonté au treuil dans un cacolet. Lionel Terray ne put pas atteindre Longhi, le câble s'étant coincé et il fallut le remonter.
Le plus terrible c'est que les sauveteurs passèrent tout à côté de Gunther Nothdurft et Franz Mayer, sous le sommet, alors qu'ils étaient peut-être encore vivants, ayant laissé tout leur matériel à Corti. Leurs corps ne furent retrouvés que bien plus tard.
Le corps de Longhi, plusieurs fois foudroyé, resta plus d'un an sur place avant qu'une expédition ne se décide à aller le décrocher.
Même à notre époque, la face N de l'Eiger reste une très grande entreprise et si j'y ai pensé après la Walker, j'ai médité ce qu'en avait dit Walter Bonatti : "aucune montagne ne vaut ma vie".
Bonjour!les premier a avoir reussi a gravir la face nord de l Eiger avait des crampons 12 pointes,en tout cas pour les 2 en tête dont la chute était interdite car la corde cassait en cas de choc,les second était peu être en chaussure clouté

Ed Martinez. Dear Ed, This vid reveals the teamwork and mutual reliance that ensures a safe ascent. But what a lonely place for solo man. Us more ordinary mortals can only wonder at the single-mindedness, focus and fire-in-the-belly displayed by the likes of Eric Jones and the late Uni Steck.

So unless im going mad & hallucinating @15:42' at the top right near the summit on the cast shadow of the mountain, there's also a shadow of what looks like a climber hoisting a flag up a flagpole.
So either its been superimposed onto the video in post editing or you've managed to capture the ghostly figure of The Guardian of the Eiger... haha :D
