    Pro tip: if you have a settler who is standing in the wrong place, such as on the roof, and who are refusing to move, you don't have to punch them (unless you want to).
    Open build mode, grab one of your turrets that are already built. Carry it over to the settler and use it to push them around to where you want them. Release the turret (don't place it, just press the "back" or "cancel" button) and it will snap back to where you built it.
    This works on brahmin as well.

      Thank you! This should help, as I frequently have people or brahmin stuck on the roof of either the house I created in Sanctuary, or the house across the street from my pre-war house. I even installed a staircase so I have access to the roof when needed, and now I use the flat part of the garage as power armor storage. I keep wondering how to get the people off the roof, without being forced to leave the settlement and come back.

      K. Murakami that only works if they are on top of something you built, and you don't have too much stuff on shelves there. Unfortunately, most of my settlers end up standing on the roofs of the houses in Sanctuary.

    I know this video was six years ago, but it's still super useful here in 2024 as a new settlement builder! I heard somewhere that the longer the item name, the more it moves the settlement bar down. So things with few words won't make much impact, but guns or armour with like, 4+ words will do even more. I'm not sure if it's true, but it'd be kinda fun if that was the case! I'm about to test it, myself.

    What annoys me with the size limit is the fact I want to build a settlement similar to Diamond City which is massive if it was a building settlement, but in a actual building settlement you can't get anywhere near the amount of buildings and decorations that Diamond City has.

    • @SkooledZone
      @SkooledZone 7 лет назад +13

      I know what you mean. It's so annoying. You build like a few walls and a few beds and you already have to resort to this settlement size glitch. LOL.

    • @keithsavagelives
      @keithsavagelives 2 года назад +2

      I must be super lucky, because I don't have any problems with glitching, after much "accidental" use of this exploit. First, background: I play on a PS4, offline, no mods, base game, no DLCs, my character doesn't even have Science! yet! Second, I love building in this game, but I found storing tons of various junk in the workshop, all of which breaks down into a literal myriad of components VERY confusing. If you're new, it's just too much to remember. I mean, laser pistols that break down to 6 plastic, no circuitry, no metal at all?
      So, I figured out a work-around- drop the junk, enter workshop mode, then select and scrap each piece. Your workshop is eventually cleaned out, and you have a simple inventory of Copper 55, Plastic 324, Leather 5, etc. When I look at the inventory, I can easily judge what I can make, without having to recall beaker stands break down to copper, though they look exactly like steel.
      Anyway, this has been dropping my Sanctuary size limit for months, without me realizing exactly why I could keep building. I certainly have dropped and then stored items occasionally, but never did I consciously use the exploit. But I use my scrap'n'sort method DAILY. I am now worried about crashing the game I worked so hard to perfect.

    • @retrograygames7320
      @retrograygames7320 Год назад

      @@keithsavagelives I might be wrong because it's been some time since i've played FO4, but from memory I'm pretty sure whatever junk you store in the workshop is already converted to the raw materials when you are building stuff.
      What I mean is, let's say you stored 10 x laser pistols in the workshop without breaking them down, just storing the whole pistol, when you go to craft something your inventory will tell you have 60 plastic. When you craft an item that requires plastic the workshop automatically scraps something that has those materials for you. So there's no need to individually scrap everything to see what resources you have.
      Like I said I might be wrong because it's been some time since I played, but I feel like that's how it works.

    • @keithsavagelives
      @keithsavagelives Год назад +1

      @@retrograygames7320 I'm sorry I wasn't clear enough: I know the Workshop will break down Junk automatically- as you use it. I want it broken down automatically as I place it in the Workshop Junk Inventory tab. I don't want to see a list of Junk, I want a list of raw material. Also, there are many items that won't break down at the Crafting Stations- for example, Raider Leathers do not even appear in the Armor Station list, so you can't break them down to Leather, except by my method: drop them from your personal inventory, enter Workshop mode, scrap the armor. I play offline, on a PS4, no mods, and was entirely base game for over a year, I figured out everything on my own. And I never realized my Drop & Scrap method was lowering the Settlement Size and activating this glitch. To be fair, I did notice the Size meter going down, but I didn't know I was causing that. Thanks for replying, appreciate your help a lot.

    About "damaging" your settlements, right after defending a settlement from an attack there's usually lots of guns on the ground from fallen enemies. If you use the workshop mode to store them instead of picking them up yourself you may involuntarily lower the build limit and ending up with weird glitches on it.
    Some of my settlements show these symptoms and this might be the reason.

  • @darthmaulian

    First I wanted to say, thank you for creating this series. The entire thing has been a huge help to me. I have recently gotten back into Fallout 4 after setting it aside to work on other games for quite a while. I just finished up the Vault-Tec DLC and really got into settlement building. I had dabbled a little before in Sanctuary, creating a few buildings and running power and a small factory, but nothing major. I had a vision for my vault, but had been unable to realize that vision until I found this series. This tip specifically helped me flesh out my vault to what I wanted from it. I had most of the rooms in place, but was having trouble putting in the furniture and other items to make it look like a living vault. I had to remove several sections and destroy everything loose in the vault to be able to get some stuff done. I still ran out of room, and was going to give up and install the 0 settlement size mod, until I found this video. Thank you as well for the warnings, I will expand only enough to create my vision. But for now, I need to finish the game, then come back and really dive into settlement creation. This is great. Thanks again for creating this, and keep it up!

  • @virtualalias
    @virtualalias 6 лет назад +3

    My guess on the difference in reduction amount is that it comes down to poly or tri-count of the item, plus maybe its physics attributes combining to create a "weight" score that represents CPU/GPU impact.
    Texture size and transparency count as well. Second Life has a similar building capability and also limits building in a given area by "weight".
    Number of polygons is always the limiting factor for 3D geometry processing. It's why we have things like bump/normal maps that use shading to trick your eyes into thinking geometry exists that doesn't. (To avoid adding lots of extra polys)
    Nevermind! Just saw your update video!

    The reason why you see so much variation in how much objects reduce the settlement cap is because each of the visual sections of the rendered objects is done in one of a few ways, for instance, wine bottles have a label, typically a band along the stem, etc. Gamma guns and weapons in general are so great for this because they are even more modularized graphically, look at the front of gamma guns to see the small metal sections around the satelite dome looking end, its made up of small sections of corrugated rusted metal on some models. Drugs typically are smaller singular models with one texture, where as wine has many variations, it makes more sense from a programming standpoint to modularize the visual result and do 1/4 of the work for just as much variation.
    This is just my theory and opinion, I am a software developer though not for games and I do not even work on fallout mods so take what I have said with a grain of salt.

    Let's not forget about the awesome sandbox capabilities that Halo 3 created with building maps of your own in Forge mode. I think they really hit it on the head and a few big game developers had noticed and kinda started following suit. Halo 3 was the first game where I actually had control to delete everything (or almost everything on some maps) and redesign it the way that I saw fit, and that was badass lol. When I seen that building was in Fallout 4, I thought it was entirely awesome that Bethesda had done that. I'm just saying this because it seems like you either forgot or just didn't know about Halo 3's Forge mode, which spawned some seriously sick maps and architectural creations. I just wanted to make sure Halo received some credit also XD

    One of the strategies I use is dropping and scrapping all my junk. By breaking all the junk into components, it lowers the size bar naturally, and it keeps you from losing components when junk is scrapped (ie using a clipboard for the wood and losing the spring). This may not be true - I remember reading that when the game first came out and there was a lot of bad information circulating. But I got into the habit and it naturally keeps my size bar down so I’ve stayed with it!

    It has to do with the complexity of the shape of the item, complex objects take more computing power to render so a square, like Blamco Brand Mac and Cheese, is easier to render than a complex shape like a flamer, and weapon models are usually made out of multiple shapes so that is more that has to rendered.

    It actually just comes down to the texture size of the object stored as well as the complexity of it's model. Mainly the texture though. Any texture for an object has to be loaded in ram and then applied to the model. Now that explains why weapons are very good for this exploit. The textures used for weapons are very large because in first person you hold the weapon right up to your face. Easy

    Awesome vids man! I use Nixie tubes to keep track of how many times I’ve maxed out the size limit and then completely reduced it to zero. It helped me to realize the superiority of specializing each settlement to do one thing and do it well. Every settlement doesn’t need to be a farm, factory, and merchant hub…. Aaand the settlement where I display all of my legendary and unique weapons and armor probably shouldn’t do anything else hahah

    Another frequent problem I have when I make over sized settlements is assigning people to jobs, it often takes way longer than it should. I’ll assign someone to farming and theyll go start working ten minutes after I’ve assigned them. In between the act as if nothings happened. It just takes multiple minutes for the command to kick in if your settlement is bigger than it should be. Using the overseer terminal you can build in settlements and assigning work that way can make it work faster but not always.

    I know I ran into the size limit wall in Jamaica Plains.
    It's pretty frustrating since I really was looking to do more building.

    A settlement size glitch that I have found is once you have reached the point where it says nothing more can be built. if you drop any item that can be scraped go into build mode then scrape one item that you dropped it will let you build one item.

    I used this glitch only for small things. Not for whole buildings. I used it when I was setting up a bunch of street lights in Sanctuary and when I needed to put some beds and lights in my Red Rocket settlement. I don't plan to add anything more to these locations unless absolutely necessary (say, I get too many new settlers), so I should be fine.
    Where I might use it a bit more is in Vault 88, as I am basically building a city. I created a long road and even took advantage of slopes using supports to create platforms for buildings. I call the road the "King's Road", and it basically goes through most of the settlement, barring locations I physically couldn't force the road into, like caves.
    I know it's supposed to be a "vault", but I didn't feel like building it like a vault.

    Hey Skooled Zone, first off I really LOVE your intricate videos!👍🏼 I just wanted to say that next time, you drop the wine bottles and then set them up in workshop mode cause they snap upwards in work mode. Also, can settlers REALLY steal stuff? Once, I shot a settler and they ran to room and had an odd animation with my trunk. Did they steal something?

    • @SkooledZone
      @SkooledZone 7 лет назад

      Hey Kaskum, yeah settlers can definitely steal your guns. For example, my Alien Blaster is gone off the wall display at my Finch Farm settlement and I can't figure out who stole it. LOL. Perhaps the more innocent settlers are just looking for better weapons around the settlement to help defend it. But yes, that's a function they do unless you make your weapon containers inaccessible to them. As for snapping objects upright, see here: ruclips.net/video/sDza5oblD1g/видео.htmlm10s

    Good video, if the exploit was based on weight, the 80lb dumbbell that you can find somewhere in the Glowing Sea would have the biggest effect on the settlement size once stored.
    Would be interesting to find out how much it does because the 80lb dumbbell could be a good test to see if weight actually matters in this exploit.

      Skooled Zone, I just watched the video, that makes complete sense, the settlement size isn't necessarily a cap on the amount you can build, its a cap on what your system can handle, the weapon mods doing more to lowering the size cap makes sense because there a lot more pixels to load versus the bowling balls.

  • @JasonTrouten

    Another way is to manipulate the size glitch is to create 2 power pylons, connect a wire between them, select what you want to build in the build menu, and store the wire. The game thinks you are getting rid of something, so it will let you build the item. Then repeat. The game will keep letting you add and store wires. Move the pylons to wherever you are working and continue your building.

    Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone new to this channel. The reason that the settlement size glitch works with weapons better than items like Jet or Wine is due to the number of polygons that have to be rendered. Weapons are arguably more complex and thus have a higher polygon count than the Jet. The same is true of the Wine bottle vs the Jet. The wine bottle is larger, and more complex than the Jet hence more polygons. There is a way to increase the size limit by console commands, and that is by increasing the draw limit of the games workshop. Use the getav and setav commands to see and then increase the polygon count. Hope this helped someone understand what is going on. Cheers! (love your channel btw...)

    Very helpful video, my arrogant ass has blamed Bethesda this whole time for Fallout crashing so frequently but it was from all the stress I put on it from the size glitch due to my building addiction. I rebuilt the castle as my own main headquarters but also sized up Spectacle island along with my Vault 88, but once I started the Far Harbor DLC and rebuilt Longfellows cabin, my game crashed within minutes of loading once I returned to the Commonwealth. I had to start a new character cause it just wouldn’t run smoothly anymore. But I also had an issue when I played the Automatron DLC, when I got to the end my game would crash as soon as I left the Mechanist’s base. I think the DLC content combined with the size exploit causes serious programming problems for settlement builders that want to take it a bit further. As you said we need to take everything in moderation. I used this exploit in multiple settlements including the DLC’s and now I am convinced that my original character is completely fucked. But hey I’m kinda starting to like my new one anyways 😃 I will keep building until there’s nothing left to build!

    for the longest i had no idea that there was a size limit...as soon as i found that i could scrap items from the workshop that's how i would do things...i've only just getting more serious into building...but i've been keeping it small, basically what i need to make a settlement happen...no cap farming and what have you...who really needs a hundred water pumps or thousand of generators? anyway, i haven't seen a size limit aside from what there is when you first acquire a settlement...i just scrapped that way to have actual crafting items go directly to the workshop instead of having to transfer to the workshop after scrapping weapons and armor that i don't want. and i've always seen this as a game mechanic. i'll be subbing to your channel...thanks

      Hi Cyanne. Glad the videos are helpful. I don't know about the unlimited resource glitch because I don't use that one. I must've said "Are you kidding me !?" a hundred times before discovering this process by accident. Quite a revelation because I immediately set about building sky scrapers for everyone. Now I have to fast travel from Red Rocket to Sanctuary. Then stand perfectly still for a couple'a minutes while the engine catches up. Oh well, at least I get 98 happiness there. (3 Gorillas)
    Just a funny note. If you get to a settlement to defend against an attack & your turrets take out all of the enemy before you can find them. Notice how no one says: "Thanks for your help..." like you didn't build anything. Not that I'm ungrateful but just find it humorous. (Besides most of the time I avoid that conversation because it glitches w/you not being able open inventory.) Yep , always a huge relief when you hear : "Anyway, thanks for your help."

    Someone else has probably said this already, but it's probably the "file size" of the item in question.
    Those gamma guns are complex shapes. That means it requires more polygons to accomplish some of that complexity, such as the detailing on the front dist, the fuses and transistors, the detailing on the body, and the overall awkward shape. While smaller details can be simulated with normal mapping, shapes and forms that can be viewed from every direction are true polygon constructs. However, to get normal maps to simulate the smaller details believably (i.e., make them look like 3D parts of the model from most viewing directions except for cross-plane), it generally requires a decently sized, moderately detailed normal map texture. On top of all of that are the color texture, any lighting textures, and the awkward collision meshes for the shape. All of those components have their own memory footprint, resulting in a "file size" for each object in the game.
    My guess is that it has zero to do with weight, or any in-game mechanic, when it comes to how the value is determined for these items in the build limit meter. Rather, it's likely the complexity of the shape, textures, and collision meshes that ramp up the memory requirements for the individual items, causing some smaller items to hit the meter harder.
    The wine bottles have more reflectance/smoothness than some of the other items you dropped. That generally requires more memory to process than flatter textures, meaning the wine bottle is likely a larger "file" than the mentats box. Most of the weapon models are highly detailed and fairly complex, so they'd have some of the largest footprints.

    • @GWinterbornYT
      @GWinterbornYT 6 лет назад

      I just saw your follow-up video. So, yes, someone already mentioned it.
      Technically, an image file used as a component of a 3D Material is a Texture -- it has UV coordinates. This is any image file or image component displayed across a 3D object in a 3D game.
      A Sprite is an image that will be displayed flat, and has XY coordinates. This is often any image used for HUD and/or UI objects, or any graphic that exists in a 2D game.

    The reason why weapons work best is because the sole survivor holds them up to their face to fire and as-such the models have to be detailed (more polygons) enough to get close. The proof for this theory is that the most efficient weapon to use is the gamma gun which has all kinds of little wires and resistors and bits of wear on it.
    Pipe weapons are more bang for buck though since they're basically junk items and you'll never not have 1000 available.

    Also, when you dropped your aid items to demonstrate the size reduction, notice how they only generated a single model of each, even though you dropped 29 jet, for example?
    That's what happens when you drop more than five of an item. If you want to actually have 29 jet inhalators on the floor (for decoration, or size glitching), you have to drop them one at a time.

  • @Drivel101

    I like to scrap all my unscrapped junk items in the settlement inventory in order to reduce the settlement’s inventory of unique items (ie wrench, desk fan becomes steel and gears etc) and consequently the settlement build limit. Also, stacked items don’t reduce the bar. If you have a stack of 6, drop and scrap all 6, not one stack of 6. I think the more components associated to an item, ie a heavily modified gun, the more you lower the data trail associated with the particular item.

    I'm not using any mods either, but for this one I absolutely use the console command.
    First walk to your workshop inside your settlement. Then open your console and select the workshop by clicking on it.
    Then you need to insert the following command and press enter:
    Setav 349 -1
    And the same for the following command :
    Setav 34b -1
    It resets settlement size to zero and it remains there.
    I see absolutely no reason not to use this (bar the warnings about too much stuff in a settlement might break your game, although I've never seen it happen). Your method works, of course, but it's a lot more work.
    It's the only one I use, apart from tcl (no clip/move freely through everything) in case I get stuck, which I think shouldn't be possible by default but it happens.

    Any chance for a video on building to prevent lag? Does construction in Sanctuary, Red Rocket, and Abernathy stack to increase problems? What about loads of power armor? Lights and powered items? Workshop inventory? Provisioner connections? Windows where the engine has to show interior items? I have huge lag from Sanctuary almost to Concord, and a weird rendering problem at Starlight where one building renders slowly and piece by piece every time I visit. Same thing at the airport with one powered door. I can walk in like it's not there if I don't wait for it to appear.

    I don't know if any one has commented on this but using factory I started pulling from workshop using the pull hopper and I noticed that I started just pulling components and scrapping them which puts them back in the stack. I did this with egret tours and in about 5 min I had the meter down about half way. I also noticed if I drop an item that is multiple it is counted as one for sizing of the settlement

    I'm gonna guess it has to do with number of polygons on the item. Mentats are a box, which is probably the easiest thing to render. Jet compared to wine confuses me a bit. But weapons, with all of their mods available are probably quite resource heavy to render. If I'm correct, the gamma gun even has a particle effect associated with it. Being detailed, complicated items with so many nooks and crannies, it makes sense getting rid of them would greatly reduce the strain on the game engine.
