India changing its name to Bharat finally fixes my long-standing annoyance. "India", as a country, has never existed in history. Before the British, there was Mughal Empire, and different small kingdoms and states, but none called India. Before that, something else, but never India. India was a name given by the British to a region, not a country. When the British left, they divided India into two: Pakistan and soon-to-be Bharat. At least the Quaid, the founder of Pakistan, throughout his time as the Governor General of Pakistan referred to it as Hindustan, not India. However, officially the Republic of India retained the name 'India' and did not take the word Hindustan or Bharat or any other name. So, coming to what annoyed me. What that meant was, at least when it comes to writing history and communicating historical information in the English language, that the legacy of the people of united India was attributed only to people of the modern state of India. For example, when someone from an English speaking country talks about "Indian food", they are actually using the word 'Indian' here not to refer to the modern state of India, but to the region of India. Which includes Pakistan. Most of the time it is Mughal food, Punjabi, or north western Indian food that is referred to as Indian food. Pakistani people who have lived in this region for hundreds of years predating Pakistan have as much right to claim it as their own as a modern day Indian. But because of the naming issue, all credit for things that could be claimed by united India would go to modern India. Bharat fixes all that. I have long tried to explain this to people but the existing vocabulary was so confusing to get this point across but now it has become easy to say it: Both Pakistanis and Bharatis are Indians. This would have always been so if Pakistan and Bharat were named such after partition. Pakistan and Bharat have a shared identity and a colonial legacy of India. 'Indian food' could come from either Pakistan or Bharat. Indian clothes could come from either Pakistan or Bharat. Indian spices. Indian architecture. Indian history. Indian literature. Indian poetry. Indian art. Pakistan, for 70+ years has been denied claims to all of the pre-1947 'Indian' art, architecture etc by historians calling it 'Indian' even if it came from the area currently called Pakistan. It was Pakistan's fault too. It abandoned the word India and forgot much of Indian history even though Pakistan is the logical successor of the Mughal empire and its heritage. Anyway, all that is fixed now. Now that Bharat is at war with its history, it is abandoning a lot of things. It is erasing everything related to Muslim rule in the Indian subcontinent. From Mehrgarh times to 1947, the people Pakistan contributed immensely to the region historically known as India. With the new fixed vocabulary, they would now be able to communicate that better........
"India was a name given by the British to a region, not a country." You guys trot out this Islamic propaganda as if it is a fact. India was name used by the Ancient Greeks which predates the British. Then you go on out Pakistani existing prior to the creation of Pakistan. This is the classic Islamic mindset in India, which is to destroy the past and glorify Islam. Rubbish, if not for Jinnah there would be no Pakistan. India however predates Islam and thus any Islamic claims are illegitimate. 1.Indika (Greek: Ἰνδικά; Latin: Indica) is an account of Mauryan India by the Greek writer Megasthenes (died c. 290 BCE).
There was no Pakistan before 1947 so how is it that that you want to call it Pakistani. What is Pakistan today was part of India. So it is rightfully called India or Indian. Bharat has always been there. Do not twist things to suit your agenda. By the way Pakistanis in the US identify themselves as Indians, so that is for you.
The commonly held perception (or how the story goes), is that ‘India’ was ‘partitioned’ in 1947. That perception, that story, is incorrect, a myth. Based on years of research, the case is made that 'India' had never been an identifiable geographical or political entity. Incontrovertible evidence shows that even the British themselves believed this area had never been a single 'country'. And so it would be impossible to partition ‘India’ in 1947, because it never existed. The more correct name for this area would be 'South Asia'.
in 1947, both were governors general, Mountbatten India’s and Jinnah Pakistan’s. Such an invitation was, therefore, standard fare. Jinnah, however, objected to it. The reason: the invitation used India rather than Hindustan to refer to the new country. He wrote to Mountbatten: “It is a pity that for some mysterious reason Hindustan have adopted the word ‘India’ which is certainly misleading and is intended to create confusion.”
