Absolutely LOVE these videos!!! I go to Helsinki a few times a year for work, and people are SO nice-and they seem to get genuinely happppi (that’s Finnish for “happy”) when I say a few words in Finnish-or make an effort to do so. So, I’ve been watching these videos, hoping to master a few phrases in Finnish before going there again in a couple of months.

Thank you for making your videos, I always enjoy watching them to learn about the Finnish language and culture. I also took your recommendation and watched the Deadwind series on Netflix (although I had to use subtitles the entire time) and enjoyed it! Next I plan to watch the Border Town series. I look forward to your future content. What other Finnish TV shows or movies can you recommend? Thanks!!

    • @finntasticbeast

Those were the ones that were recommended for me in my comments, also I didn't know about them! We need to watch Rare Exports next! And subtitles are great, I use English ones all the time when I'm watching Netflix (in English) so I won't miss anything.

Heloooo....your videos are super nice, you're so funny....I have two questions...do you like some Finnish bands / musicians? Maybe you could make a video recommending some of your favorites (if you have).....do you know how it is to be gay in Finland? All I've been reading over the internet says that Finland is one of the best countries to be gay, but I'd like to hear it from someone who used to live over there / have friends over there.....kiitos paljon.... greetings from Brazil

Helloo!! Not a bad idea for Finnish bands, though I don't listen to Finnish music that much. Yes I think Finland is great for gays and has been quite progressive for quite a while now. 🌈

I don't know if it will help you, and I want to make clear I am not Finnish and never lived there *yet*, but here's my personal list:
      - Happoradio (rock band): I can't begin to recommend songs by this band. I'm just obsessed. So I guess I'll go with 'Hirsipuu' ('Gallows'), 'Che Guevara', 'Itä-Suomessa Tuulee' ('It blows the wind in Eastern Finland') and 'Pimeäntaite' ('The Edge of Darkness').
-Kaija Koo (probably one of the veterans, pop singer): I can't still just recommend one song by her, so I'll go with 'Pelkkää voittoo' ('Pure win'), 'Ex Nainen' ('Ex-girlfriend', but so far I know that Nainen is "woman" and Tyttöystävä _is_ "girlfriend") and 'Kylmät kyyneleet' ('Cold tears').
      - Tiisu (rock band, apparently): Okay, for this one I _can_ recommend only one song (not because they are bad, but because I haven't listened to them that much and I have a clear favorite); 'Elämältä turpiin sain' ('Life roughed me up').
      - Dingo (glam rock, one of the classics. For me, they are basically Finnish The Cure): 'Levoton tuhkimo' ('Restless Cinderella') and 'Nahkatakkinen tyttö' ('Girl with a leather coat').
      - Apulanta (rock band): We are back at having to recommend more than one; Armo ('Mercy'), 'Koneeseen Kadonnut' ('Lost in a Machine') and 'Lokin päällä lokki' ('Seagull on a Seagull'. Yes, really. This is one extract of the song: "Seagull, seagull on a seagull, seagull's seagull's seagull, multifaceted
. Seagull, seagull on a seagull, seagull's seagull's seagull, looking like me
      ").
      - Benjamin (trap? pop?? Teen singer): 'Naarmuja' ('Scratches').
      - Egotrippi (I would say pop band, but calmer): 'Markustaja' ('Traveler').
      - Korpiklaani (folk metal band, very well-known abroad): 'Kipumylly' ('Mill of Pain') and 'Lempo' ('Lempo'. It's a name). They also have a cover of the very famous 'Ievan Polka' ('Ieva's Polka').
      - Suo (very hard indie singer to find. She'll start popping up on Google once you search for the songs): 'Liehu' and 'Kuuratar' (I couldn't find the translations for any of the songs and I don't have yet the level to translate them by myself. I guess she's too underground).
      - Munamies (children music in the form of a manball with a very high voice, if you like cringefests like I do): 'Pomppufiilis' ('Feel like bouncing').
      - Costee (Google says he's a pop singer, but I guess I'm very used to the Spanish definition of pop. So I'd say: Finland's pop is very chill and will probably sound kind of indie to a foreigner): 'Luurangot' ('Skeletons').
      - Abreu (R&B/Pop singer. Very popular nowadays, I think): 'Sytyn' ('I catch fire').
      - Behm (Pop singer. Kind of similar to Abreu, if you ask me): 'Hei Rakkas' ('Hey Darling').
      - Ellinoora (_super_ famous pop singer): Once again, couldn't just choose one; 'Marie Antoinette', 'Elefantin paino' ('Weight of an Elephant'), 'Bäng Bäng typerä sydän' ('Bang Bang Foolish Heart') and 'Nartut' ('Bitches').
      - Lauri Tähkä (folk-rock singer, looks like one of the old ones in the industry, and Wikipedia describes his genre as "suomirock" which sounds promising. And it is): 'Morsian' ('Bride'), 'Palavaa vettä' ('Burning Water') and 'Suudellaan' ('Let's Kiss').
C: I wouldn't know if they're classics, but they are good.

@@finntasticbeast Naa the video could never be too long, we're here because we love Finland and finnish language after all!
Pulla! When I was in Helsinki I went to some coffee shop and asked if they had pullat and the guy replied something like "Of course! Without pulla we're finished!" :D
Anyway, you're lovely, finnish is the best and the most musical language in the world. I'll be ready for when I finally buy my mökki in Lapland :)
P.S.: yeah the true and real Joulupukki a.k.a. Santa is in Rovaniemi and I have a picture that can prove it!
P.S. 2: did you notice that you pronounced "Rovaniemi" with finnish accent and 2 seconds later with american/british accent? It's weird and amazing at the same time how our brain sets itself to a different language/accent even when speaking words that don't require any translation or vocal variation.
