A Bit. She didn't get that worst actress award (whatever it may be called) for nothing. Lol.
However, I could see the possibility that her somewhat exaggerated performance could've helped to fuel a more "realistic" anger from Jack Nicholson towards Shelly Duvall. Perhaps said anger could help tremendously in his portrayal of his character. If he slowly begins to dislike Shelly more and more over the course of filming due to her 'over done performances', that would mirror Jack Torrens' slow growing hatred for Wendy.
This may not make sense lol.

@@TheOneTrueKingg Wow, that's insane! But it does make sense. It's a very plausible theory, but one also very disturbing, imo. Thus, if that would actually be true, then the director and Jack Nicholson alike were, indeed, going a bit off their rocker..

did u asume my species? She had a mental breakdown 30 years after the release of The Shining. Idiots love to claim that The Shining/Kubrick were the reason for her deteriorated mental health, even though those claims are complete bullshit. The reason why they say that is because Kubrick was tough on Duvall while filming and she was noticeably stressed out (losing hair). I guess by claiming she was driven insane while filming just adds to the lore of Kubrick and The Shining.

@@EphemeralProductions That kind of reminds me of how actors like Marilyn Monroe and Marlon Brando had trouble dealing with certain directors during their careers. When Marilyn did "The Prince and the Showgirl," Laurence Olivier was an asshole to her. He didn't want to treat her like an actress or a person, but rather as the sex symbol that she had been branded as, and that really upset her. Marlon Brando said his least favorite movie he worked on was "Mutiny on the Bounty" because he and the two directors of the film clashed a lot over how bad the script was and how the directors didn't want him to change the script or the way he played his character to make the film better. They just wanted Marlon to do what he was told, but he wasn't going to be a slave to any director.

My addiction to Bts And got7 I highly recommend it. Not because its a "typical" scary movie. No jump scares or things like that. After watching it I was more terrified of the Dad and how insane he became. You can really feel her fear throughout the movie like you're there with her. The sad thing is that this scene in particular was filmed 127 times(something like that) and since they wanted her genuine reactions they made sure that even off set and when they weren't filming they treated her very poorly. And sadly now she's schizophrenic. Dr. Phil did an interview with her and she's very delusional. Its heartbreaking because her acting in this movie was fantastic. So seeing her crying, and feeling scared isn't acting. She's genuinely terrified.

I agree. Shelley's great here. By now everyone knows that her experience on this movie wasn't pleasant. Kubrick deliberately treated her like crap. He said he just wanted to get that hopeless reaction out of her but he crossed the line. No reason to treat her so horribly. People say she was a weakling and annoying. But how the character was written isn't Shelley's fault. She was just playing the role as best she could. To the point of mental and physical exhaustion. I put all that on Kubrick.

mini rant: Stephen King remade this because he was upset, and there had been a lot of criticism from his fans, that Wendy in Kubrick's version had been too wimpy. And whenever I hear that from King fans now, it makes me so angry. Wendy in this version is not some kind of horror movie hero. She's someone who is experiencing the crippling effects of extreme isolation as much as her husband is, and she's losing all composure as a result. Those comments ESPECIALLY make me angry after all that's come out about what Shelley Duvall was put through in filming this, and that her acting is largely a real response to a strenuous and abusive environment, as if any one of her critics could have withstood it more than she did. This scene is far more horrifying to watch than any scene in King's campy version.

I saw it when it came out in 1980, and although there are some fascinating sequences I didn't really like it then and I still don't. I've always thought Duvall gave the best performance in the film. Her reactions as the terror escalates are perfect, complete uncomprehending bewilderment, close to helplessly breaking down and then instinctive resourcefulness (locking her husband in the pantry) Horror movie heroines are usually directed to fit the flow of the action rather than to depict how a human being would actually respond when unreal, baffling and horrific things start crashing in on them. I think she's perfect; so on the surface, uncalculated and real.

Some people apparently hate Shelley Duvall in this movie (including Stephen King himself). I guess she doesn't fit in their idea of a horror film scream queen - she looks and acts like she's genuinely scared.

Exactly. I think it's so good it makes some people uncomfortable and so they irrationally hate her for it. They don't like seeing a woman truly terrified and messed up like this. I think it's more the character people hate rather than the actress. They want her to stand up and stop being a push over but this isn't your typical horror slasher with the empowered heroine. It's a disturbing, unsettling look at domestic abuse taken to the extreme.

    • @petercallahan7321
      @petercallahan7321 6 лет назад +20

Don Draper I have to respectively disagree. Wendy in the book might not respond to situations with the hysteria Duvall conveys in this film, and she's supposed to be hot I guess. But Wendy in the movie saves herself and her son, withstands far more abuse throughout the film than Wendy does in the book (up until Jack attacks her in the book, nothing happens to her personally) and is credited with being more resourceful than she initially presented herself to be BY THE GHOSTS THEMSELVES. And she starts off at much lower and more vulnerable place. Honestly if my husband told me to my face while backing me up stairs that he was going to bash my head in, I'd probably break down crying too. That she manages to find the fortitude to get herself and her kid the hell out of the hotel proves her to be a strong character. I think she has a much more thorough arch than in the novel. In the book, Wendy might having thicker skin but she's just as passive as King says Duvall's Wendy is, she only knocks Jack out because Danny distracts him and once the climax of the book starts, King disposes of her by having her pass out and never fully regaining consciousness. She plays literally no role whatsoever in protecting Danny, ultimately proving to be totally useless once the shit hits the fan. Does that make her a bad or uninteresting character? Certainly not. But I think the idea that she's "stronger" than Duvall's Wendy is pretty easy to dispute. Kubrick's movie actually pivots on Wendy getting it together and taking action. She essentially becomes the primary protagonist and the audience surrogate. King has to literally dispose of her so that the finale of the book can happen.
Obviously this is just my own opinion. But I think Duvall's Wendy is an accurate depiction of a real human in extreme circumstances, responding spontaneously in the moment to what's being thrown at her. The Wendy in the novel is surely a compelling character, but that's all she is, a character who would only ever exist in a novel.

There are rumors that Shelley was actually not just acting this part, but the emotions she expressed in this scene were actually real, not acting. Rumors are that she was even like this even when the camera wasn’t rolling. The reason why is because this scene was redone 127 times. Rumor is also that Stanley Kubrick purposely wore her out in order for her to do the act well

@@thebosstex1172 Kubrick was not the one to take care of his actors well, he would burn them out to breaking point. This was taken a hundred and twenty-seven times

King: how do you like it?
    Kubrick: ahhhhh Stephen
King: how do you like it? what are you doing down here?
Kubrick: I just wanted to talk to you.
King: ok... lets talk... what do you wanna talk about?
    Kubrick: I can’t... really... remember.
King: you can’t remember. Maybe it was about the movie. Maybe it was about it. I think we should discuss the film. I think we should discuss what should be done with it. What should be done with it?
    Kubrick: I don’t know.
King: I don’t think that’s true. I think you have some very diffident ideas on what should be done with the film and I’d like to know what they are.
Kubrick: I think maybe... jack should have an axe.
King: you think maybe jack should have an axe.
    Kubrick: yes
King: and when do you think maybe jack should have an axe?
    Kubrick: at the very end.
    King: aT tHE VeRy eNd.
    Kubrick: Stephen... please.
King: you Think this movie might be a stake?
    Kubrick: yes
King: you are concerned about it.
    Kubrick: yes
King: and are you concerned about me?
    Kubrick: of course I am.
King: Of Course you are. Have you ever thought about my responsibilities?
Kubrick: ohhhh Stephen what are you talking about.
King: have you ever thought for a single solitary moment about my responsibilities for my novels? Has it ever occurred to you that I’ve agreed to have the novel made in my vision, that I wrote for hours at a time, that I signed to make a movie out of it, a contract in which I am entitled to see my vision of this novel to come to life? Do you have the slightest idea what a moral or ethical principle is? do you? Has it ever occurred to you what could happen to my future if the movie didn’t live up to the book? Has it ever occurred to you? HAS IT?
    Kubrick: get away from me.
    King: why?
Kubrick: I just wanna go back to filming the movie.
    King: why?
Kubrick: I just need a chance to think things over.
King: you’ve had your whole fucking production to think things over!!!! What good is a few minutes more gonna do you now.
Kubrick: get away from me!!!! Don’t sue me.
King: I’m not gonna sue you. Stanley... sir... light of my film... I’m not gonna sue ya... you didn’t let me finish my sentence I said I’m not going to sue ya I’m just gonna bash this film in hahaha I’m gonna bash it right the fuck in.
    Kubrick: get away.
King: I’m not gonna sue you.
    Kubrick: get away.
King: stop filming the movie. Put the camera down Stanley. Give me the film. Stop filming the movie. Give me the film. STANLEY. Give me the film. give me the film. (Movie becomes huge) ohhhhh god damn it.

The only reason that people criticize this scene (or this movie) is because they have not lived with anyone who struggles with mental health issues, or have never been in an abusive relationship. As a person who has experienced them both, I would say that this is VERY accurate. Both performances were so convincing, I am spellbound by their expressions and words. #1 scariest movie of all time, hands down. Prove me wrong.

I swear, they'd better not do a remake of this film like they've already done to ruin other masterpieces... No remake will ever come close to this masterpiece...
The Shining is an example that well-crafted dialogues, masterfully orchestrated score, a cast with talent, brilliant cinematography, and a dedicated director can build a horror film without jump scares or poorly applied CGI.
